2011 Eastern Conference Finals Bulls - Heat : Everybody loves Udonis
AKA: Game Two Roundup links + know your FanPosts/FanShots
It's not fair to already be sick of game two yet, we still have 3 more days to talk about it!
The big story, because it's new and all, was the return of Udonis Haslem to the Heat rotation. I still maintain that while it's a lot of talk for what is ultimately a role player, it's still a big deal simply because the Heat have so few non-useless players, so one more matters. Here are your Haslem bullets:
- I'll start with the big mushy profile, from Michael Wallace at ESPN.com, talking about Haslem's rehab-filled season and his meaning to the heat. Also includes Spoelstra's post-game words about Haslem, which were hokey but a bit appropriate.
- Heat fans are certainly excited to have him back. Maybe it's because their stars are so difficult to root for?
- Click at your own risk: Haslem dunk 1 and 2 from Wednesday.
- Not only was Haslem back, but the Haslem + Mike Miller played together for the first time all season. Miller still can't shoot at all but did provide some non-uselessnesss as well.
Non-Haslem stuff:
- There's a fantastic upcoming SI piece (as in, the future magazine article, today!) on Thibodeau and the Bulls defense. Doug Thonus thinks that Thibs may be a bit too defense-obsessed if Thibs thinks that was the problem in game two. Though as much as we've focused on the Bulls inability to finish inside, as Load O' Bull points out, there's a real issue with the Bulls D in the way they're allowing Miami to score in the paint.
- And in a cruel yet funny way, Kelly Dwyer reminds us just how the Bulls couldn't hit from anywhere in game two. And while we're ragging on point guards, I like all the digs Ira Winderman throws Mario Chalmers way in his game two recap.
- We will not rag on the point god. But Derrick Rose did not have his best game and the Heat defense (even Mike Bibby) gets some credit. Kevin Arnovitz takes a look at Dwyane Wade's defensive work in particular. John Krolik makes an appearance at ESPN.com and wonders big-picture (as in, career-big) what this means for Derrick Rose's superstar status.
- And if you're not reading your FanPosts, here are your Sebastian Pruiti breakdowns of game two. I enjoyed this point-filled recap also.
- And finally, the Carlos Boozer rap nobody had been waiting for.

It amazes me how Thibs said after game 2 they need to work on defense.
He always says the offense will come. Yet the Bulls only allowed 3 more pointing in compared to game 1. So?I realize the Bulls were missing shots but part of that was Miami’s defense and rebounding. I sure hope they make some adjustments offensively come game 3.
1. Rose must penetrate penetrate penetrate penetrate penetrate penetrate penetrate!
2. Boozer has got to get going on the PnR.
3. Korver has to make some 3’s, thats it.
There's not really anything wrong with what Thibs says.
I think the low point total for the Heat was more pace-related in game 2. They didn’t get a lot of fastbreak points, scored plenty in the pace and shot 47% for the second consecutive game.
Thibs always says that their offense starts with their defense. Giving up low point totals is only half the battle; the other half is forcing turnovers and low percentages so that they can get out on the break. The more fastbreak points for Derrick and Lu, the easier it will be open up their half-court games.

This is why Doug Thonus' take is so ridiculous...
He basically rants against the words of Thibs without regards to the points you had made above regarding pace and turnovers…
And Doug is just wrong with this statement:
The outcome of this game had nothing to do with defense.
I actually the outcome of the game had quite a bit to do with defense, and specifically the Bulls inability to make key stops and as the Dr. noted, to force turnovers which lead to easy Bulls buckets.
7 for 7.
Interestingly, Miami shot the exact same percentage in games 1 and 2
The Heat were 32-68 from the field in both games. They did have 4 more offensive rebounds and one less turnover in game 2, but they also had 9 more free throw attempts.
I had felt that the defense was better in game 1 than in game 2. But I’m guessing the points per possession were actually pretty close between the two games. And that takes into account that James had a monstrous last few possessions.
Part of it was the type of shots Miami was getting in game 2. They got a ton of uncontested buckets at the rim, and that can’t continue. But in terms of composite defensive production, the results seem like they might be fairly close between the two games.
by SouthernCub on May 20, 2011 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions
Statistically speaking, the main difference appears to be our shooting...
we hit 10 more shots in game 1 (7 more 3s) and we hit 1 more FT (on 6 fewer attempts). Miami did play good interior defense and played great overall defense down the stretch. But we still had a ton of wide open shots that just didn’t go in. If even a few of those fall, who knows how the game turns out?
That said, I still don’t disagree with Thibs’ assessment. We do need to do a better job of preventing easy buckets (force Miami into more jumpshots). And our shooting won’t be as bad as it was in game 2 (so in that sense, the offense will take care of itself). And playing better defense will create more easy bucket opportunities too.
The only guy who I think really can adjust his game offensively is Rose. Korver is taking the right shots on offense, just not hitting them. Same for Deng (he was hitting them in Game 1). Boozer just isn’t finishing, but again that’s not an offensive adjustment but rather an outcome change.

I agree with Doug Thonus
Missing open shots lost this game.

Enough about Haslem
He made a few open shots, had two great dunks. But the Heat were still -11 with him on the floor in a game they won by 10. I thought the Boozer/Noah frontcourt played well when Haslem was in there.
I get that he is kind of a “heart of the team” type guy and it helps with the Heat’s confidence to know he can contribute, but I don’t see him as the difference maker in this series.
I will never doubt the Chairman again.
no, Udonis Haslem weekend continues
I dunno about dismissing ‘difference maker’. The thing is these teams are pretty evenly matched, so small things like replacing Maggloire’s minutes with Haslem could be the difference. Though that assumes ‘normal’ production from the more important players.

And wasn't Haslem out for the game-ending 10-0 kick?
So there are some explanations on the +/-, but it’s not like the Heat flipped a switch when he was on the floor. He replaced some of Bosh’s production from Game One (as did Wade and James) and, as you noted, was a rare non-useless contributor for Miami. But if we can get a Boozer/Haslem matchup I would take that.
The Bulls Game Two performance was the worst effective FG% of the season I believe, by a large margin. Unless James or Wade raises their game to vintage Jordan big-game levels the Bulls win this series if they make their open shots.
I will never doubt the Chairman again.
Actually, I think Haslem wasn't in for the game-ending 10-0 run...
the lineup appeared to be Bibby/Wade/James/Bosh/Anthony (based on the screenshot taken at 1:30 to go in the previous thread).
But I think that four keys remain (in no particular order):
1. don’t let Miami get into the bonus early in quarters (they live on the line)
2. don’t let Miami get easy uncontested buckets (they got a ton of those in game 2)
3. shoot better than they did in game 2
4. find a way to get Rose more buckets at the rim

The NBA Playoffs - always the best reminder why Joakim Noah is my fav Bull
I think the best thing I got out of this - 11 article was this picture..

How cool is it to see someone dunking on your team and the immediately directing your eyes onto that 23 banner in the background? Doesn’t just make everything better? Like we dunked on the NBA for a decade… like I wanna go get a Chicago style hotdog and run the streets naked with Chicago passion. I love it. It’s like the forces field of pride for me.
As for Dwyer, he clearly has his own agenda when it comes to this series
in that he doesn’t want to be some homerific jinx.
21 point game one victory and he writes about how LeRod is still good.
10 point game two loss and he is quick to poke fun of the Bulls shooting.
He’s an interesting guy, to say the least.

Merely my skills of observation.
I know Dwyer is a dedicated Bulls fan.
He had to have been excited and then disappointed by the games 1 and 2 results. It would have been easy to write a fluff piece after game 1, but chose not to display his fandom. I think his intent if fairly obvious.
As for you, it would be easier if you just said things like “You’re an ass”, “I like you” or “shut up.” Because you use too much ‘tongue-in-cheek’ and such, I never really have any idea what the intent of your messages are. Do not assume a level of intelligence many of us do not have. :-P

For you own sanity, don't even look at the comment section on that Krolik
ESPN article. I did find it interesting how poorly Lebron shot in his playoff losses over the last 3 years. It really shows you need multiple offensive options late in the playoffs – hopefully the Bulls have enough to overcome the Heat. Although one of the most annoying attributes of writers is to assign attributes to players that aren’t there. Lebron has not developed a post game – I don’t think he was in the post once all night. Wade wasn’t splitting double teams at will. Speaking of assigning attributes that are not there –
I think the “unheralded defense” of Wade is just a load of BS from a BS writer. Wow Wade shut down Bogans and Brewer. He must be the first. I thought he fouled Boozer on that block Arnovitz crows about by the way. Korver missed a number of wide open looks so I’m not giving him points there. And Wade rotated on defense!?!? Does Dwight Howard know? Has he handed over his trophy yet? He guarded someone when they were 12 ft from the basket! I’m not sure if that has ever been done before. And Wade did not stop Rose. Rose missed shots. He beat him into the lane continuously. Wade played good D. All the Heat players did. That nut clutching article is just lame.

I’m not convinced. Especially late when he forced way outside and was blocked/tipped twice.

I think he missed shots early on and decided later in the game to get in there and try and draw some fouls.
He beat his man time and time again but usually took the ball too deep and ended up among the trees, either getting blocked or missing badly. Usually when he beats his man and sees the bigs ready for him he opts for the floater; for some reason (I think to draw fouls) he took it to the big and it cost him. He even said something like that in the post-game presser, where he said something about not shooting enough floaters.
FTR, I think the Bulls need to go away from some of their usual stuff at the end of games like Game 2. The offense was clearly sucking yet Rose was still trying to get his teammates going. The wings (Kyle and Deng) should have just spread the floor and let Derrick isolate against his guy(yes, even Lebron). He can beat anybody 1 on 1 and either he’ll get the shot for himself or he’ll find the open guy like he did with Deng earlier in the season. In tight games I like the all-defense plus Rose lineup, he’s good enough to get the team wins so as long as they allow him to do it.
Well I've been mostly saying the Bulls missed shots they should want and take
I think the Heat have dome a somewhat decent job of forcing Rose out of the paint. But Rose did shoot 10 times in the paint, including 3 of 4 shots in the 4th quarter. In the article you linked to the guy mentions that Rose got his shot blocked a lot by Miami – but than goes on to say Rose gets his shot blocked a lot. Which is true. He is one of the league leaders in having his shot blocked – which is understandable for a 6’3 guy trying to shoot over 6’11 and 6’9 guys. So I don’t think its that extraordinary that Miami was also able to swat a couple away.
Its not that I don’t think Miami is playing good defense on Rose – I think Anthony and Bosh are doing as good job as anyone all year of cutting of his penetration to the rim in the halfcourt. But to say Wade and Lebron are doing some extraordinary job of keeping him out of the paint is to ignore the fact that he got 8 assists, many times directly off penetration and that he only had 2 turnovers. We’ve seen Rose play worse against defensive pressure in the Indiana and Atl series. So what is it about what Miami did in Game 2 that is so extraordinarily different than what Indiana or to a lesser extent Atl did?
Wade had 2 blocks (1 definitely on Boozer) and Lebron had 0. So they aren’t chasing him down from behind – they aren’t making him the turn the ball over and they aren’t keeping him out of the paint. Basically they are just trapping him everytime and he is usually giving up the ball. That is why I said in the game thread that the Heat are begging Boozer to score 30. The Bulls run side and pick rolls and they leave Boozer open 10 ft from the basket. Rose only really started to force things when it became clear the Bulls weren’t going to score running the traditional sets.
I mean he got off 10 shots within 5ft of the basket and only hit 2. Unless you are saying Bosh and Anthony and Haslem have some extraordinary ability to alter shots that Al Horford and Josh Smith didn’t have (who seemed to block Rose’s shot far more often) its hard for me to say they are forcing him to take shots he normally wouldn’t take. I think normally he would finish 2 or 3 more of those drives to the basket and all of the sudden we are talking about a 10-23, 27 pt 8 ast performance.

This is comforting, and I'm not just saying that
Bulls are 19-4 following a loss this season, including 3-0 in the playoffs.
This is a reflection of the make up of the team. Thibs holds all players accountable, and they deliver after realizing their faults. It’s not like the Bulls lose, Derrick Rose gets mad and goes off on other teams. The team itself tightens up the defense, plays with more energy and limits dumb plays/turnovers. Think about how many times the Bulls lost over the last 2 to 3 months and how you worried if this team peaked too early or just wasn’t good enough to continue this surprise season. It happened a lot, we all second guessed ourselves. But losses usually ended up being good to the Bulls. It would wake them up and they would play harder (hard as that is to believe). They would continuously take it up another notch. A telling stat this year was that the Bulls were the 2nd best team this season against the point spread
Chicago has been a favorite of bettors all season long, ending the season with the second best record against the spread in the league, at 49-31-2.
I’m not trying to bring gambling into this but the reason I even bring this up is because at the beginning of the year, the Bulls weren’t seen as the Bulls everyone sees now. Throughout the season, Bulls got better and the odds kept increasing. Yet, they would still defeat the odds. No matter what their record would say, no matter how good people assumed they were, they responded by being even better. This is a team that’s never satisfied. Most of all (best part of all), they couldn’t give a shit what anyone thinks of them. There’s a reason this team never lost 3 in a row, their will to win is too strong. Yeah, the Heat have that talent stuff going on for them but I’ve never seen a team in my entire life that cared more about winning than this Bulls team. Does it win them a title? Who knows? But it sure is comforting knowing they believe they can, and are doing everything they can to reach that goal. Part of everything, is correcting their mistake after losses and playing better than ever before.
I can’t wait till Sunday.

Same here. The Bulls are a good team.
I don’t know whether they’ll win or lose, obviously, but I feel good about the game because they’re good, not because of that record.
I mean, what if the probabilities were that they were supposed to go 21-2 in those games?
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Personally, I don't put too much credit into the record post-loss w/o further evidence.
For one, a loss for a 62-win team is going when they played a good team. (a review of the schedule would show this to be true or false) The chances that they play another “good” team that has a better than even chance of beating the Bulls is pretty remote (again, a review of the scheedule would show this to be true.)
Basically, the “probabilities” say they should rarely, if ever, lose two games in a row. I don’t know what the exact numbers are, but I’d be more curious to see if they played above or below that expectation than just throwing out a “good” record of it.

Now if LeBron miss shots then the shots don’t got in. If Rose makes his shots and his shots go in you can win THE GAME. I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!
Derrick Rose plays a similar style to Allen Iverson , the former PG of the sixers, quick, witty and tireless. They both love driving to the rim. However, Iverson has an edge over Derrick Rose on fade aways and jump shots while Derrick Rose has a better supporting cast than Iverson.Rose also has problems with double teams as Iverson had. I think Derrick Rose is over-rated.
Deng in my opinion is the x-factor for the Bulls.
"I think Derrick Rose is over-rated"
Oh boy, one loss and it already started huh? BTW, who actually ‘overrated’ Derrick Rose?
Allen was also the master of steals, can not say that of Rose. All, I am saying is that a lot of burden is put on Rose because of the rating, instead of asking his supporting cast to step up.
Allen was a master at jumping passing lanes and missing his assignments.
Because, you know, he didn’t care much for practice.

i think we all know
who iverson is.
Look
I didn’t want to offend anyone by saying the "f" word or generalizing my statement to any particular sex by saying "gays" or lesbians" or "bi’s" so "homos" is the most "politically correct" term. I’m just trying to be more tact in a tactless blog.

I don't think Allen Iverson, the former PG of the Sixers, was often intentionally witty
I guess you’d know

He doesn't seem so "witty" himself
So I can kinda (just kinda) understand why he thinks AI is so witty. Based on what He thinks witty is and what it looks like to him.
Enough with the "Deng x factor BS"
He’s supposed to do well.

I believe it's team chemistry.

One of the many reasons you may "THINK" he's over-rated
Could start from where you compared him to an all-time great PG.
This delay still makes no sense to me. Really haven’t heard anyone really explain why the 2nd delay is this long.

I know.. TNT is getting record number of viewers.. knowing that (Which I think they knew would happen)
they wanna milk this thing for all it’s worth. Playing on a Sunday is going to get you more viewers then like a Friday night when everyone is out. I would think.
I also think having long periods between games makes for a longer series but it will pickup soon. The Oprah thing screwed shit up. The game was to be on Monday and Wednesday but still there was a 4 day gap.
Basically I think the NBA/TNT wants this puppy to go 7.
there's something in the AA arena tonight
prob why it got pushed out beyond 2 days rest

too bored.
Watching game 3 vs Atlanta. Stupid hawks, can’t score close enough so that Rose can get 50 (has 44, 5 minutes left, 24pt lead).
Walk the talk, Bulls.
I think we won that series.
We’re playing Miami now, please join us.
Thibs got his team a chemistry set for Christmas

Walk the talk, Bulls.

this extra rest is good for d-rose's ankle.

Did Rose have an ankle injury?
It’s been so long that I can’t remember anything that happened before the Miami series.
He sprained his ankle in G1 against Atlanta, which is so far removed from my consciousness.
Do you realize the playoffs started almost a month ago? A month!
