NBA Playoff thread -- 4.24.2011

Lots of games on today to take our minds off yesterdays events:

Miami @ Philadelphia   1 PM ET

Boston @ NY                   3:30 PM ET

Orlando @ Atlanta           7:00 PM ET

LAL @ NO                         9:30 PM ET

Star-divide

Apparently there were only 2 fouls called on the three-headed monster of Miami in game three in 120 minutes played... Let's see if the refs have an agenda in any of these games to extend some series. Also, the Heat are averaging 32 FTA.

I'm predicting, Sixer, Knicks, Magic and Laker victories.

Yeah so would I.

Funny thing is I saw on yahoo sports last night them listing the game first as TBA, which it has been for awhile, then as 1230 pm eastern time with the 26th Tuesday. Obviously that won’t be happening

Win or lose with Philly,

I think this game just shows it’s hard to keep any playoff team down an entire series, especially on their home court. The only thing I worry about with the Bulls is Rose being healthy. The rest doesn’t seem to matter…yet lol.

by Sandberg's evil twin on Apr 24, 2011 12:35 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah, first it's hard 'cause the players have pride and you may get complacent being up 3-0

Second it’s hard to sweep ’cause you usually gotta play against the refs, too. (Especially true yesterday)

I've been a Bulls fan since we had Orlando Woolridge.

Yeah I’m old enough to remember all the people panicking he was a bad influence for the city with his history when the Bulls acquired him. Yet saying all that I turned off the game in the 3rd quarter and watched the score on the net. It was just too painful to watch Rose play hurt and the Bulls struggle so much. I sure hope he can play at 70% or whatever he will be and the Bulls put them away. Rest for the rest of the week. I expect it and if I was Thibs by now I’d demand it from the other players. They have to step up.

Yeah, bad move to switch shoes right before the playoffs IMO.

Well that could be true.

Orlando had beat his gf when the Bulls drafted him and many were upset he represented the city. Seems almost tame these days. Shoes or no, Rose can’t always carry the team and these guys are paid too much money not to take over when needed.

I’m not gonna give Bosh any credit even if he deserves it. But I’m just pleased Miami doesn’t have the supporting cast to win it all. If its not Chicago/LA in the Finals, Lakers will beat Heat.

He's probably the 2nd best Wingman in the draft

Just the three players ahead of him on the boards were all head-cases (Monroe, Favors, Cousins).

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Apr 24, 2011 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Neither Monroe nor Favors are head cases

Favors is just really raw and Monroe has limited upside.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Ur probably right.

The draft kind of sucked. Wall and Cousins weren’t very healthy/good, Turner couldn’t get minutes, Favors/Monroe/Wesley Johnson were all underwhelming, etc. This had to be one of the worst draft classes I’ve seen.

You can still block the balll above the hoop

It’s either after the ball touches the backboard or after the ball reaches the top of its arc does it become a goaltend.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by Dils on Apr 24, 2011 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I'm not sure if he's worse

Boozer is a better low-post defender and rebounder. Bosh is better at close-outs and as a shot-blocker.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Booz is a better low post defender.

For a guy his size, he gives up ground way too easily.

by dakoose on Apr 24, 2011 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll take the close out and shot blocker thing

Since we got Noah and Asik

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Apr 24, 2011 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, you just hate Boozer

So I don’t really consider you to be objective on this point. I don’t really get why we are comparing the two anyways. It’s not like the BUlls didn’t go after Bosh.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh whatever

Don’t paint me like I’m blinded by some weird hatred. I speak the damn truth about Boozer. And I was talking about the fact that Bosh can block shots which Boozer can’t do. If and when Boozer plays better I’ll lay off his ass. Until then…

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Apr 24, 2011 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Whatever man

You can’t wait to get on Boozer’s ass after every game. You can be the blog’s prime Boozer-hater if you want, but don’t get all huffy when people don’t take you seriously at times.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Dude.

I really don’t care what you take seriously. I mean what I say about players and take them back when I’m wrong. If you’ve noticed me slamming Boozer more times than not it’s because he’s sucked more times than not. It’s not like I’m in the minority with that opinion. I liked him when he got here but call it like I see it. If others want to cut him more slack that’s cool too. I won’t.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Apr 24, 2011 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Boozer's had a bad series

But you act as if he’s played like ass all season long. That simply isn’t the case.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Well first off

it would require him playing the whole season to qualify as him playing bad the whole season so you’re correct there. Secondly, he’s played well at the most 2 months. The rest he hasn’t. That’s just how I see it. Also this is why he was brought here. To perform in the playoffs and be a true second option. If he won’t jump and defend against Hansborogh in the playoffs then we got real problems

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Apr 24, 2011 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

At most 2 months?

He hasn’t played as well post-All-Star break, but he is still averaging 14.8 and 9. You can’t just ignore the first three months that he played either.

As far as the Hansbourgh shit. You’ve got to be kidding me. Hansbrough was uncharacteristically hot on 18 foot jumpers in Game 1. For the entire series Hasnbrough is averaging 10 points on 33% shooting and 4 rebounds per game. Boozer on the other hand is averaging 12 and 11.5. He has missed some bunnies around the rim, but he hasn’t been near the liability that you are implying.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Boozer missed the first 30 games of the season

Then missed another 8 or so after his ankle injury. So we’re talking almost half the season right? So yeah about 2 months of Boozer looking like Boozer. Then he started playing a little worse before that ankle injury so I’m actually being generous by saying 2 months.

15 and 9 isn’t enough JSB. Hell Taj was giving us close to that and playing defense earlier in the year. The guy needs to give 20 and 10 because he’s that bad defensively. What has always been the saying on this board about BG? Yeah he’ll give you 20 but he’ll give up 20. Well at least BG gave you 20 consistently! Boozer isn’t giving that and he still giving up points. He’s a PF, finishing around the rim isn’t asking a lot. Expect more from this guy.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Apr 24, 2011 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Boozer played 59 games this season

He missed the first 14 games of the season, not 30. He played 70% of the season and averaged 17.5 and 9.5 on 51% shooting. Not quite what we hoped for, but not a total disaster by any means.

Boozer played great in December and January when we were missing Joakim and needed him most. He started to play a little worse in February and was in a full-fledged slump in April.

I’m not sure what’s changed since February. I wonder if he might still have some lingering ankle problems.

I do expect a bit more from Boozer than 15 and 10. I’m also not writing him off, and I think we shouldn’t forget how important his rebounding is.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Ok my mistake on the missed games

But as I do think 2 months of great play is what we’ve seen so far. I hope he plays better too but I don’t what he’s given over the last 2 months is enough. If he was playing bad before the ankle injury I would understand but there was a down tick before then. So I’m not exactly sure what the issue is at this point.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Apr 24, 2011 3:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Me neither

The Bulls need BOTH Boozer and Noah get back to the level that they were playing at in the early season. Yesterday was Noah’s best game in a long while, so hopefully we will see Boozer get it going soon too.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Something I don’t see Bosh ever do

I agree. But, that decision might not be completely in his hands.

If Spoelstra and Wade both support him as the closer (wrongly of course) all he can do is take the best shot, and I think he actually did. Philly’s defense was just perfect. I think this was more Philly winning that last possession than Lebron losing.

by rinconen on Apr 24, 2011 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

He really didn't take the best shot though

LeBron should know that if he drives he can draw the foul any if he wants. He chuck up that shot. It was bad. I mean it hit the top of the backboard and rolled off. Philly’s D was good, but LeBron could have put up a better shot.

by macjack09 on Apr 24, 2011 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Shooting 9 3s yesterday was inexcusable.

Of course I’m a Bulls fan. But, I want them to win. If they are going to win, Derrick needs to shoot better. It’s not complicated.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sure you can make a correlative

debate that he takes more forced shots when his teammates are getting controlled.\

It’s too easy to say that Rose needs to shoot better. He’s proven that he can and will, but it’s not a proven fact that Boozer will. If anything the only sure thing with Boozer is that we have no idea of what kind of performance we’ll get from him.

I see the team turnovers and inability to take advantage of the trap as a bigger issue

Agreed

His shot was off, and he still jacked up a few. Still, his teammates weren’t doing anything for 3 quarters. Just trying to fuel something.

I don't see why you should question him for being a Bulls fan over this.

If I remember correctly, the same “Bulls fans” were complaining about Ben Gordon scoring 33 points on 7-23 shooting while playing with a torn hamstring in his last game as a Bull.

Even if we do it for the 1st 4 minutes of every quarter.

That’s that’s outscoring them, say, 40-10 in just 16 minutes of the game. If there’s one thing we all learned, it’s that the Bulls need to trap. Hopefully none of this will matter by Tuesday.

I'd trade both Boozer and Noah, and find a way to try to keep Deng.

I know this would be a bit unpopular, but you offer to take Arenas’ contract off the Magic’s hands.

I would propose Dwight Howard and Gilbert Arenas to Chicago. Joakim Noah, Keith Bogans, Ronnie Brewer, and Kyle Korver and the Charlotte pick to Orlando, and Carlos Boozer to Denver.

Denver gets another piece to help them contend out West, Orlando gets Noah and all guys that can expire after this season, and we get Dwight freaking Howard.

We would be left with

PG-Derrick Rose/CJ Watson
SG-Gilbert Arenas
SF-Luol Deng/Brian Scalabrine
PF-Taj Gibson/Kurt Thomas
C- Dwight Howard/Omer Asik

We would have the best big three in the league in Rose, Deng, and Howard, none of which duplicate what the other guys already do, and they should all complement each other’s games really well. We still have pretty good front court depth, and all four of our main big men are good defenders, which should make us a really strong defense.

I’d look for a good shooter at shooting guard with the MLE, hopefully to start at shooting guard over Arenas. Then get a shooter and another big man in the draft this year.

I would absolutely gut the roster if need be to get Dwight. Dwight’s not a faux superstar like Melo. Rose/Howard would be this generations Kobe/Shaq, and I don’t think they would have the chemistry issues those two had. Dwight is the perfect complement for Rose. He will set some hard picks which will make it easier for Rose to drive, and when Rose drives and misses, Howard would be the ultimate garbage man. You know all those putbacks Noah misses? Howard doesn’t usually miss on those.

but you know what? Chuckers can sometimes win you games you have no business winning. This goes to the irrational player Kenny Smith was talking about. We don’t have a guy like that and that’s why we have to play perfect on the defensive end. You just have to limit a chucker’s minutes. Vinnie Johnson was a chucker and got 2 rings. He was called “microwave” not only because he scored quickly but because his minutes were limited. BG would be the perfect microwave for us right now.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

Damn, it looks like the Hawks are actually going to do this.

This is all positive for the Bulls. Easier second round opponent imo, and we could be a player for Howard if the Hawks can finish them off in the next three tries. (There was no chance in hell Orlando was trading Howard here if we knocked them out of the playoffs).

Nah. I feel pretty much the same way.

The Celtics sweeping the Knicks was a fait accompli once Billups went out and Stat became banged up. The Knicks do not have a good team outside of Melo and half Stat.

Plus, the C’s have been to this rodeo before. You expect them to dispatch a team like the Knicks with (relative) ease. The Heat, since they came together this year, are in a spot similar to the Bulls’.

Compared to Paul? Yes.

We aren’t comparing Deng to LeBron. We are comparing Deng/Korver/Bogans/Boozer/Noah/Thomas to Ariza/Bellini/Willie Green/Okafor/Gray.

Rose objectively has better teammates than Paul. Just like Rondo objectively has better teammates than Rose.

But Aaron Gray is an All-Star!!!!

It’s just that people are scared of the unknown. What I have seen of him is exactly what we need and I can’t believe he isn’t being at least gotten some burn after all we’ve seen. -SoulEater7

If only we had magic beans

I love Paul, but you don’t just develop that kind of vision. Only two players in the game today really have it. [Maybe a few more if you want to be lenient.]

These Playoffs are wide open

If the Bulls can get their shit together (meaning kill Bogans) they have as good a shit as anyone to win a title

Fired up!

I don’t even care if it’s another tight one, as long as the Bulls are aggressors. I want to see Foster flop himself into a tailbone injury while rolling over Hansborough’s ankle.

Like who? Deng and Boozer are better than anyone Paul has on his team now that West is out.

Some of that's on Rose.

Sorry. I love Rose and I think he’s the best player in the NBA. But Paul is a better playmaker.

by JSB on Apr 25, 2011 12:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Please.

You’re giving both of those guys a ton of slack. Rose get’s a lion share of the defense attention. More than enough to get them good looks.

Rose has played poorly the last 2 games

Sorry. But if we think Rose is the MVP, he has to play at an MVP level in the playoffs.

by JSB on Apr 25, 2011 12:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Sorry for what. They're up 3-1 and Rose sprained his ankle

in the game they lost.

He may not be scoring super effeciently the last two games, but the Pacers have been throwion their tallest and most athletic players on him in aggressive double teams and he still performs.

How is Boozer getting his ass blocked or missing the rim completely Rose's fault?

by SoulEater7 on Apr 25, 2011 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

lol dude the Lakers struggle guarding point guards.

He is a post player and how can he get him open looks when he can’t even convert easy dunks?

and Hansbrough was eating... he was eating chocolate chip cookies with a fork.

by SoulEater7 on Apr 25, 2011 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Boozer hasn't missed easy dunks

Almost every shot Boozer has missed at the rim has been contested.

Boozer has played like ass this series, but we don’t need to make shit up.

by JSB on Apr 25, 2011 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

he didn't actually say that it was "completely Rose's fault"

but I think this time is as good as any to go on anti-Boozer and a little anti-Deng rant.

The idea that Rose is suppose to be setting up Boozer and Deng like Paul sets up Gray and Landry is BS to me. Chris Paul is a unique player. The rest of the 29 NBA teams with 2nd and 3rd scoring options don’t have Chris Paul. Gasol, Bosh, Howard, Odom, Durant, Aldridge, Horford, Garnett – pretty much every big good big man is able to contribute without their point guard creating a lay-up at the rim. Boozer is suppose to have more in common with those guys than fucking Landry and Aaron Gray. If Boozer needs Rose to escort him to the rim than he needs to be gone because that isn’t how you win NBA championships, with your 2nd scorer completely dependent on your 1st scorer to get him easy looks.

by Basketball Smurf on Apr 25, 2011 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

While I agree with you that point is pretty much moot about him being gone.

He’s locked in for years. No one is wanting that contract.

I agree with this sentiment

Boozer and Deng absolutely need to step up.

by JSB on Apr 25, 2011 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions

uhh, trap him to get the ball out of his hands

he is their only high level player. Make someone else make a play and they’ll turn it over or force a bad shot. Having him carve up people on every switch isn’t working.

by Basketball Smurf on Apr 24, 2011 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah but he has other ball handling guard like Jack.

by SoulEater7 on Apr 24, 2011 11:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, you see ... uh ...

The Lakers are idiots? Only explanation I can see. I remember I was reading a recap of game 3, they trapped Paul for a bit and it was totally shutting the Hornets down. I guess they stopped because they got bored or something.

Fair enough

They should at least give it a shot.

Still think Paul would handle the traps a little better than Rose. But, good point about him being their only really good player.

by JSB on Apr 24, 2011 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I dont think chris would handle it better

Paul is playing the lakers, they make aron brooks look like a superstar. Rose is facing much tougher defense. I dont understand why the lakers dont pack the paint like the pacers do and force those guys to shoot jumpers. it is not debatable that pauls vision is better but I think it is far tougher to get guys good looks at the rim when the pacers pack the paint because they dont respect luol as a shooter and keith bogans as a human being.

by Slick Ric on Apr 25, 2011 12:18 AM CDT up reply actions

The only reason why Rose is facing tougher defense

Is because they can put their defense liability on Bogans, or Brewer if he plays.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Apr 25, 2011 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

But Ariza averages 13 points a game in the playoffs

Bulls would kill for a starting 2 guard that could do that.

Kyle Korver is averaging about 10 points I believe

But Ariza is also a very good defender (isn’t he more of a small forward though?)

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Apr 25, 2011 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, he's an SF

The pacers’ off-guard is either Bellinelli/Willie green/Jarrett Jack, most of the time.

exactly

it is because they dont respect bogans as a player and anybodies else ability to create their own shot.

by Slick Ric on Apr 25, 2011 12:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Lakers have a way better defense than the Pacers

If you are really arguing that the Pacers are a tougher matchup, I don’t know what to say.

by JSB on Apr 25, 2011 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

do you think the Lakers are playing better defense than the Pacers?

i’ve seen every game of the Bulls series and 2 out of 4 of the Lakers series. I don’t see the same type of defensive attention being paid to Paul despite the fact that he has less talented teammates. They aren’t even trapping him let alone sending a double team as soon as he crosses half court.

by Basketball Smurf on Apr 25, 2011 12:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Pacers are playing harder for sure

But, Pacers also have way, way, less talent that the Lakers.

Chris Paul has played a 2 all-time great games so far, and Rose has had 1 great game, 1 good game and 2 games that were below his par. I don’t see what the problem is.

by JSB on Apr 25, 2011 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions

The Pacers also match up better with the Bulls.

and Hansbrough was eating... he was eating chocolate chip cookies with a fork.

by SoulEater7 on Apr 25, 2011 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Dude Im not saying the pacers are better than the lakers or their defense as a whole is better

but their defense as far as playing the point position is much better than the lakers, I dont know what you are watching but kobe cant guard chris. the pacers have definitely made better adjustments as far as guarding the point is concerned

by Slick Ric on Apr 25, 2011 12:25 AM CDT up reply actions

thats not what im saying

but the pacers are playing far better defense on the point than the lakers are, they are expending so much energy to try and stop rose, Rose really does not have the time to make plays with the way they are trapping so hard on him. paul is basically roaming free out there with a few exceptions.

by Slick Ric on Apr 25, 2011 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

He doesn't have to.

and Hansbrough was eating... he was eating chocolate chip cookies with a fork.

by SoulEater7 on Apr 25, 2011 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions

actually the argument was about

the type of defense Paul is facing

The TNT crew makes a point. Chris Paul has not recieved traps like Rose has.

by Basketball Smurf on Apr 25, 2011 12:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Man, if Rose had Paul’s court vision….that would be something.

by JSB on Apr 25, 2011 8:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Kenny Smith just said the Lakers went 16-12 last year in the playoffs to win the championship.

That would be going to game 7 in EVERY series.

Actually, they went 16-7, losing 2 games to the Thunder, sweeping the Jazz, losing 2 to the Suns, and losing 3 against the Celtics in the Finals.

Still seems early for him to retire. He might take a season or two off but I bet he could be goaded into another job.

The Lakers have been historically bad at defending great point guards.

Thats their achilles heel. Therefore I’m not going to start drooling over Chris Paul. Is he great? Yes. But he’s playing against Derrick Fisher and Steve Blake. Come on now.
