2011 Playoffs Pacers - Bulls Game Three Preview: Series moves to Indiana, Collison game-time decision

Some links to chew on before the early 6pm start. I'm guessing it'll be more like a 6:30 start. This is being aired nationally on NBATV, I believe with the Pacers broadcast. I can only assume that locally it's going to be blacked out on that channel, so on to CSNChicago, unfortunately. Sacrilege, I know: I really don't want to listen to Neil/Stacy (and Scottie Superfluous).

So tonight's the blowout, right? Or just lock 'em down and have Rose sensationalize us a victory, whichever.

Yeah I knew that the info coming from Indy was crap.

No definitive info of a long term injury which meant he will be fine to play. I doubt he’s 100% of course but the Pacers didn’t want the Bulls to know if he’d play or not. Being a small market I bet they knew there wouldn’t be a lot of pressure about it being mysterious.

The Pacers broadcast crew is going to be really annoying to listen to tonight

I can’t believe that they don’t use national announcers for these NBATV playoff games.

6:30 start is interesting too.

Is nbtv going to be blacked out?

I’m assuming yes. I can’t stand Funk and Pippen hasn’t really been as good as I hoped. King has also just got on my nerves with his screaming over Neil in mid sentence. Not that I wanna hear what Funk is saying but Stacy really is taking this homer thing to another level. I didn’t notice until I listened to other broadcast teams.. but Stacy needs to chillout. This is really getting to his head and it’s infected Beef Wennington on the radio. Pumkin pie in your eye? I swear it’s just getting out of control. but whatever.

If NBATV is blacked out, what does that mean?

That it will be blacked out for national viewers? Why wouldn’t they just black it out in Indiana? I live in NYC and don’t get CSN, so this is a major concern for me.

I have League Pass, so maybe they’d play it there?

I'll bite.

Chicago commits too many 1st quarter turnovers, Boozer gives up ridiculous dunks, Bogans bricks sixteen open jumpers, Bulls down by the river at the half. Rose scores whenever, passes to Korver for the game-winning shot with nothing left.

SoulEater asks for more Butler Santori times, Dils compares Rose to Wilt Chamberlain Miller times, JBJ mentions his hatred of monkeys, and Belize makes Spanish unintelligible comments that end with "shyt."

I was trying to make it accurate to Mad Libs standards.

I.e., you don’t know what’s around the word when you’re picking them. So for that one, it would have been “give me a number,” so I picked the first number to come to mind.

The point of Mad Libs is that your words aren’t supposed to fit perfectly.

-Boozer and Noah combine for 35 points and 25 rebounds
-Rose “only” scores 23 points
-Deng leads the team in assists because of adjustments to the Indy trap
-Bogans knocks down two open threes
-There will be at least two flagrant fouls and one shoving match

I’m not a betting man how can you win by 4.5?

It's a tantalizing bet, considering how close the first two games were.

But I’d bet the Bulls without much fear.

"Smith stripped. Smith stopped! Smith stopped again by Pippen!"

by ColonelFatheart on Apr 21, 2011 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Indeed they are. Which is probably why they're a 4.5-point favorite instead of a 6.5 or 7.

That 4.5 points and knowing the Bulls will feel motivated to play and adjust better leads me to believe the Bulls will by a decent margin.

"Smith stripped. Smith stopped! Smith stopped again by Pippen!"

by ColonelFatheart on Apr 21, 2011 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep, I agree

This is probably the only one game that I would bet on the Bulls and feel somewhat decent about the bet. That, or if we win this one and game 4 line is near the same.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Apr 21, 2011 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, that's a pretty slim margin for an NBA game.

Generally, winning margin is larger because of late-game free throws. Only when the game is super close and fouling doesn’t make sense is the margin below 4. If I were a betting man, I’d almost certainly take Bulls -4.5.

by arjoseph on Apr 21, 2011 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm kind of nervous about tonight.

My fear is if they come out and it’s a close game we will lose one of these times. Would love to see them come out and dominate.

Who knows? The Bulls might surprise everyone and blowout the Pacers this time.

People are already assuming this is going to be a close game. The Bulls have been on the defensive ever since the series began. With a 2-0 lead the pressure has been somewhat lifted and the mind set is to go on the offensive and steal one from Indiana.

Just going off the first two games and the way Indiana has defended..

I’m preparing to be disappointed. Hoping I’ll be pleased. But I just feel like this could be like the way the Bulls came back for game three against the Cavs last season. Although I read the bulls play well on Thursdays. whatever. Just watching this offense play if could become messy. I wouldn’t be shocked by a 15 point loss.

and Hansbrough was eating... he was eating chocolate chip cookies with a fork.

by SoulEater7 on Apr 21, 2011 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm more worried

the Bulls come out firing, and open a big lead (15 pts or so), only to watch it slowly dwindle away as the Bulls become sloppy. Indiana eventually takes a 5 point lead with six minutes left, and proceeds to make some ridiculous shots down the stretch never condeding the lead, as the Bulls ratchet up the intensity.

by chowder on Apr 21, 2011 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

That's legitimate.

Certainly if it’s a close game with it being in Indy that helps them, and the fact we keep playing these close games…eventually the odds come out against you. I want to see them dominate and open a comfortable lead for once. I think it would really help their confidence to see we make adjustments and focus on defense and yeah, it works. Indy has a lot of enthusiasm and is playing at home in a crazy playoff atmosphere with house money, but we have the better team and if they play like it they surely can stomp on them early.

Over the past 25 years

4 other 1 seeds have won the first two games over the 8 seed at home by single digits:

2010 LA Lakers – won NBA championship
1998 Chicago Bulls – won NBA championship
1989 Detroit Pistons – won NBA championship
1987 Boston Celtics – lost NBA finals

Count me in as not assuming it’s a bad omen for the playoffs.

How many top seeds lost one of the first two games to the eighth seed to go on to win the title?

by ColonelFatheart on Apr 21, 2011 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Thats a pretty useless stat.

Those one seeds went on to win/play the finals because……..they’re the one seed, not because the first two games in the first round were won by single digits.

by dakoose on Apr 21, 2011 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Who said anything about them making the finals because they struggled the first two games?

The Bulls can win in the playoffs because they’re one of the best teams, and two close games don’t really mean much in the grand scheme of things.

That is the entire point of me posting the information.

by kbukie on Apr 21, 2011 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed, cool stat

How did you find that info out?

by YaoPau on Apr 21, 2011 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Quick scan of season summary on Basketball-Reference

Well, “quick” as scanning 25 pages can be, but it didn’t take too long. I was curious to see how often a 1 seed wins and struggles in their first two games. Turns out it doesn’t happen as much as I’d have thought. Not only do a majority of 1 seeds win at least one of their first two by double digits, but quite a few 1 seeds dropped one of the first two games at home, too.

I'd have been stunned with anything else.

They were too secretive about it for him to be hurt badly or long term. I believe Thibs was practicing for this anyway. It would have been nice to have him out but with two days off this isn’t surprising and besides we should be able to beat them with him. Sure he makes the team better but I like beating them at full strength. At least that’s how I’m going to rationalize it lol.
