Hollinger would start his team with Rose @ PG
From Hollinger's chat today:
Nick (Dayton)
John - if you're starting a team today, who do you want as a PG?
John Hollinger (2:15 PM)
That's a joke, right? There's a 22-year-old kid who is going to win the MVP, and while I may not agree with the vote, I mean ... to start a team with? It's a no-brainer. The only other guy you'd even consider is Westbrook.

More:
Why hasn’t Omer Asik gotten any time in the first two games? Bad matchups, or has he just hit some kind of “rookie wall”?
John Hollinger (2:50 PM)
Asik is one of my favorite players and I’ve been really dismayed that they’re playing Kurt Thomas ahead of him. I’m not 100% sure why, but Thibs has essentially used a 5-man big man rotation for much of 2nd half of year and he only needs four in the playoffs.

Why?
Playoff experience maybe?
and Hansbrough was eating... he was eating chocolate chip cookies with a fork.
Is this another thread just ripping on Hollinger?
He doesn’t watch enough games.

He HAD to go there
Rose: Who in the blue hell are you?
Rondo: Well
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO YOU ARE!
cp3?
I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!
i'd think with rose being 4 years younger
and paul’s injury history, you start the team with rose for sure.
Look
I didn’t want to offend anyone by saying the "f" word or generalizing my statement to any particular sex by saying "gays" or lesbians" or "bi’s" so "homos" is the most "politically correct" term. I’m just trying to be more tact in a tactless blog.

ah thats true
i was just thinking, cp3 is a guy who, even when he gets older, probably will be affective. Right now drose is relying on his athleticism. His desire to improve his jumper, his goal to learn post moves, i think all that is just to help preserve his athleticism, i.e. avoid unnecessary contact and thus injuries. I think as cp3 gets older, as his injuries start bearing down on him, even then, much like nash, he can contribute. Hit big shots, make the right plays, his passing and vision arent THAT dependent on his athleticism. He might not be able to do all which makes him great, but ill reckon if he can move on the court, he can still make plays and still hit big shots.
Now i’m not saying derrick is the wrong choice…im saying westbrook over rose is….Depending on what u believe the makeup ur team should be, u might want to choose paul over rose or vice versa. But westbrook…i dont get that pick. To me westbrook has proven nothing except he knows how to get his numbers…(looks at whos chat it is)…never mind….it all makes sense now

durant before westbrook
there’s only 1.5 month age difference
pride is the last to go before the foul.
Dwight Howard before Westbrook

Is this guy serious?
Mark (Rochester, NY)
I know MVP voting has nothing to do with playoffs but Dwight Howards performance proves your point that D Rose shouldn’t be the MVP due to impact of that player to their team
So the fact that Rose is averaging 37.5 per game, has been the closer for both games, and causes the head coach of the opposite to team to have every person on the floor try and guard him in some way shows that Rose doesn’t have an impact?
To be fair...
He probably didn’t see Rose’s games considering his head was shoved up Howard’s ass and all

I was thinking about the possible Bulls/Magic series
and I realized that Magic roster is pretty good. During the MVP debates I kept hearing how the Magic would be nothing without Howard, while the Bulls were easily a playoff team without Rose, but look at the PERs and WS/48s of the supporting casts:
PlayerName Team PER WS/48 Ryan Anderson ORL 19.0 0.217 Joakim Noah CHI 18.8 0.205 Carlos Boozer CHI 18.8 0.149 Brandon Bass ORL 15.9 0.154 Luol Deng CHI 15.5 0.149 Jameer Nelson ORL 15.4 0.137 Taj Gibson CHI 14.3 0.143 Ronnie Brewer CHI 13.8 0.147 Hedo Turkoglu ORL 13.5 0.143 J. Richardson ORL 13.2 0.126 Kyle Korver CHI 13.0 0.149 J.J. Redick ORL 12.8 0.143
It’s true that Ryan Anderson is part time player, but he played about as many minutes as Noah did this season. And Jason Richardson was a 19 PER player with the Suns this year before getting his scoring load reduced in Orlando. He’s posting similar numbers across the board apart from USG%. Arenas and Bogans both bring the averages down.

I've never understood that argument either
I think it sort of started up because no one could figure out why the Magic weren’t more dominant in the regular season. I’m not fully sure myself, but I would guess that after the trade they just had a hard time incorporating all the parts and building chemistry. Richardson and Turkoglu underachieving certainly played a part, but if you listen to some writers you would think Dwight was carrying LeBron’s supporting cast in Cleveland.
I think it's tied to the idea that none of Dwight's supporting players are any good at defense and yet
the Magic’s team defense is third in the league. PER and WS/48 don’t do a very good job of capturing individual defense, despite doing a great job of capturing offensive contributions. All of the Magic’s supporting players have their WS/48 propped up through their inflated (or deflated I guess would be a better way of putting it) DRtgs as a result of playing alongside Dwight. The Magic’s defensive ranking can almost entirely be attributed to Dwight’s presence, whereas the Bulls #1 rated defense is more reflective of the Bulls’ system and their cadre of excellent defensive big men.
The two teams’ offenses are almost exactly the same and Dwight’s a more efficient scorer, but the Magic don’t rely on him for scoring nearly as much as the Bulls rely on Derrick to score and create nearly every opportunity for his teammates.

The entire Orlando offense is pretty much based around Dwight.
Ball is his first, and when he attracts the attention he deserves then the shooters get their (hopefully) open shots. Dwight obviously doesn’t carry the burden Rose does because he doesn’t have the ball in his hands when it is brought up the court. He is just as much of a force on the Orlando offense as Rose is for your teams. He can’t affect as many plays on offense due to his position.
No, he's not just as much of a force for the Orlando offense as Rose is for ours because he plays center.
Sorry, them’s the breaks. PGs matter much more for offense and Cs matter much more for defense.
Also, I was making an argument in favor of Dwight if you were reading closely, which it appears you weren’t.
by fundamentallysound on Apr 21, 2011 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions
I said Rose affects more plays, but just as much of the offensive responsibility lies with Dwight as it does with him.
There is more to being part of an offense than Points + assists.
You can gameplan against Dwight
and foul him in critical moments its not easy but it’s still a plan against dwight for a while, With Rose you can’t foul him, only thing you can do is hope he takes a long jumper in the clutch but because of his speed you can’t do so.
Rose: Who in the blue hell are you?
Rondo: Well
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO YOU ARE!
Off topic
but for a stats guy, Hollinger often backs his arguments with falsified or misconstrued statistics. one thing I caught from this is
Nene, by the way, is not good from the line — 61.5% this season.
Nene hit 71.1% of his shots from the charity stripe, pretty decent numbers IMO. the 61.5% is during two game in the playoffs. It’s one thing to make a careless mistake, but it’s another to belittle someone’s argument with wrong evidence.
