2011 Playoffs: The Bench Mob is dead, long live the Bench Mob?

The Bulls bench was one of the biggest advantages they've employed over the course of their league-leading regular season performance. It even garnered a (uninspiring but effective enough) nickname of 'the bench mob'. They'd start their impact on the game when Brewer would first come in for Bogans (or Taj for Boozer), and then would be out in full force to start the 2nd Quarter. The strategy would usually be repeated again in the 4th Quarter. Watson/Brewer/Deng/Gibson/Asik was the best defensive lineup in the league, and when Korver would come in for Deng it was one of the best all-bench units around.

But while Thibs may be 'sticking to what's been working' when it comes to Bogans starting*, as Doug Thonus of ChicagoNow points out, the Bulls coach has definitely made some changes when it comes to other parts of his rotation.

Player MPGPlayoffsPERPlayoffs
Luol Deng 39.1 40 15.5 14.1
Derrick Rose 37.4 39 23.5 35.4
Carlos Boozer 31.9 34 18.8 11.4
Joakim Noah 32.8 30 18.8 14.2
Kyle Korver 20.1 21.5 13 15.3
Keith Bogans 17.8 18 9 1.3
Kurt Thomas 22.7 17 10 18.5
Ronnie Brewer 22 16 13.8 11.9
Taj Gibson 21.8 12 14.3 10.9
C.J. Watson 13.3 9 12.8 11.4
Omer Asik 12.1 2.5 11.8 3.1

The table is sorted by minutes per game in the playoffs.   Bogans has actually had a very slight uptick in minutes played (.2) while virtually every other bench player has had a downtick.

Brewer -6
Watson -4.3
Gibson -9.2
Asik -9.6
Thomas -5.7

It's worth noting that part of the reason for the down tick with the big men was the extra minutes available while we had injuries.   This is most notable for Thomas who typically racked up DNPs or played a lot of minutes, Thomas's minutes are also considerably on the rise if you just factor in 'healthy' lineups where everyone is playing while Gibson/Asik are on the decline in 'healthy' lineups.

As noted later by Doug, the change in backcourt makes sense due to increased minutes for Rose. But even factoring in the circumstance that the Bulls now have their starting bigs back, the change in frontcourt rotation has been pretty dramatic.

As I said in the game 2 recap, the idea of the 'bench mob' seems to be dead. In that game, it only lasted for the 3 minutes Asik was in the game, then it was back to a reliance of starters. On the one hand this was expected due to the nature of the playoffs: bench's are traditionally used less as the stakes (and rest between games) gets raised. But it wasn't necessarily a foregone conclusion the Bulls would follow suit, due to Thibodeau's insistence to end the season that there wouldn't be much of a change. Maybe some of it has to do with the Bulls finding themselves in early deficits, but this could just be the new Bulls bench.

The preference of Kurt Thomas initially looke like typical coach trappings of needing 'veterans', but so far the old guy has played pretty great. And I'd even welcome more minutes for Joakim Noah at the expense of the reserve bigs.

This is to say that none of the above is necessarily bad. Just different, and probably necessary. The bench can still be used effectively, even moreso, not as a 'mob' but strategically deployed components. It's less of a novelty than a consistent 5-man role player outfit that routinely erased deficits and busted open leads over the course of a season, but they'll still be needed. Even the most sacrificed member of the unit thus far, Omer Asik, could have a big 2nd round with the Bulls needing his size (and fouls) against Dwight Howard.

So while it's not quite exactly 'sticking with what got you there', it's still a credit to that group (and Thibs' ability to build it up)  that they can be used in such a different way going forward.

*and really, this isn't intended to be another Bogans post. Really! The last one wasn't either but it turned out that way

I've definitely been too harsh in my Bogan bashing.

Now that I see his PER is almost as high as his scoring average…(1.3 to 1.5),

Meanwhile the Bulls other starting guard has a 35.4 PER which is more than 27.2 times higher than that of his counterpart while his scoring average is only 25 times higher. Can you imagine what it would be like if our shooting guard was named Wade? For the answer just ask LeBron.

Instead of concerning ourselves with the minutes meted out to the “bench mob”, maybe it’s time for Bulls fans to form a “lynch mob” to remove a certain cancer from the Bulls offensive starting lineup.

Asik needs more floor time to get comfortable so when he does play he won’t be so fearful that making a mistake will send him back to a permanent seat on the bench. I would also like to see some Butler burn and like everyone else, more minutes for Korver/Brewer.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

Two Points

1) I’d love to see Asik get some more minutes too. He doesn’t have to play a whole lot more, but six minutes at the beginning of the second instead of two, could go along way to help him figure out playoff basketball. This is particularly important if we play Howard next series, when we’ll need Asik (hopefully to do more than just foul). I also believe although Thomas has been great, he does have limited amount of energy, and taking 2-3 minutes from him and giving them to Asik would immensely help both players without hurting the team.

2) I don’t think it is fair to call Bogans a cancer. A hole on offense, yes, a bad player, yes, someone who needs to sit more, yes, but I associate cancers with players who either have bad attitudes and personalities or a gunner mentality that takes everyone else out of the game. Bogans is neither. From all accounts he is a great teammate, and as is obvious he doesn’t take bad shots.

by chowder on Apr 21, 2011 1:09 AM CDT up reply actions   2 recs

I agree with your 2nd point chowder. I should not have implied Bogans is a cancer.

Cancer cells destroy the healthy cells around them and I see Bogan’s lack of offense hurting the Bulls since he doesn’t need to be closely guarded (if at all) when he’s on the court resulting on too many 4 on 5 situations. I totally agree he is a good teamate and gives the team maximum effort but his basketball skills are sorely lacking due to the matchups in this series.

The Pacers have no Wade or Allen so his defensive contributions are negated. I prefer seeing him taking more of a Scalabrini role, that is doing most of his cheering from the bench.

If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

I agree with your second point

But as far as Asik getting more minutes, I don’t see it as a pressing need.

Howard is a one of a kind monster in the league, and a couple of minutes against Pacer bigs isn’t really going to compare to Howard.

The Bulls are letting the Pacers roll the dice and shoot, they have covered the paint pretty well so I see that as a reason Asik isn’t out there. And if the Pacers are shooting well (as in game 1), Thomas’s superior offensive prowess (compared to Asik) helps the Bulls more.

I fully expect Thibs to go to Asik if the Bulls get Orlando in the next round.

The Bulls have a lead guard in Rose...

We don’t need another at the 2, just a complimentary player. I am not supporting Bogans (and would rather Korver/Brewer start), but I am advocating that another “star” next to Rose would not work as well as one these complimentary pieces.

14 for 7.

I'm of this thinking too.

While I’d like to see a little more time for Omer, I don’t think there has been much of a change from the regular season game plan.

Also, a more obvious point, it’s not the regular season anymore, this is the playoffs, you are supposed to adjust the game plan to suit the situation, throw in some injuries etc and it’s not overly surprising that you can find some disparity in the advanced stats between the regular season and the playoffs.

I don’t really care, but for those that do, I’m sure you could find similar stats on a lot (if not all) of other teams, where the stars and starters play heavily increased minutes in the playoffs, it almost goes without saying, you want these guys on the court.

were 2-0 and doing what needs to be done to win at this stage, when we start playing the Orlando\Boston\Miami’s of the world and the time calls for it, I’m sure Thibs will go deeper into the Bench Mob as the games get more physical and starters need more frequent rest.

Were good people, I know its tough for some of you with a #1 seed team, 2-0 in the playoffs, on an 11 game win streak, whats to whine about? but you’re getting a little crazy when you start pulling apart Bench Mob minutes in games that we won.

Ahh I see what you're saying

Interesting. Kurt/Taj/Asik probably have inflated regular season mpg numbers because of Noah’s injury. Weird, it definitely feels like he’s not using the bench as much.

Yeah the only major difference has been KT taking over for Asik’s minutes, which I can’t say I’m enthralled about.

by SoulEater7 on Apr 21, 2011 12:56 AM CDT up reply actions   2 recs

I question whether the lack of difference between starters minutes and bench minutes is due to Boozer’s foul trouble in game 1. Game 1 he played 26 min., game 2 he played 41. A difference of 15 minutes, assuming a similar substitution pattern had Boozer not been in foul trouble the minute differential would have been 176 to 144, which becomes substantial.

I am also curious to know if Thibs is playing Noah at the 30 mpg because he is still recovering from the injury and is either not conditioned well enough, or the ankle needs rest. If Noah were 100%, would he be playing more?

by chowder on Apr 21, 2011 1:16 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I'm not sure why Noah's still around 30mpg either

you’d hope if he was all the way back he’d be playing more. He hasn’t been great so far, so I’m guessing he’s hurt a bit still. The offensive rebounding is still there, but it’s not the same when he faces up on offense anymore, the threat to shoot or drive looks completely gone.

5 in the last game, although two of those were kind of cheap late in the game.

Not because of foul trouble.

He went out in the 3rd quarter at around the 4-5 minute mark and he had only 3 fouls. It really pissed me off, because Bogans stayed in the game longer, didn’t get subbed out until the around the 2:30 minute mark. And although his offense wasn’t there, he was rebounding very well.

This.

I think it’s why the mob has been ineffective compared to the regular season as a whole.

"Fast Don't Lie"

by Sandberg's evil twin on Apr 21, 2011 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the reason that the rotations seems differents is because of how the games are being played out

in the regular season 75% of the games the bulls held a lead into halftime (especially toward the end of the season) so it was easier for the bench mob to have time to HOLD a lead. These past two games they have needed to come in and either try to close a gap or take a lead. In the playoffs there is no time to mess with this…hence, why thibs is going back to starters quicker. I understand it. I forsee if we have a lead tomorrow that the bench mob will get slightly mroe minutes… (duh)

by K_yle33 on Apr 20, 2011 10:21 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Also, Boozer and Noah need to play more/together

If you look at the number of minutes each of the Bulls has played this year (link, sorry you have to scroll down a couple of graphs), after Rose and Deng playing over 3000 minutes this season, the next highest is Boozer at 1882 and Noah is at 1576. I think that Boozer and Noah need minutes and an opportunity to work out the issues that they didn’t get a chance to during the regular season. This costs bench minutes.

by Mattgrafx on Apr 20, 2011 10:45 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

the bench hasn't all sucked

I thought CJ had a very good game two (awful game one), Korver’s obviously been big. Kurt Thomas has been very good relative to my expectations.

But yeah, as the ‘bench mob’ unit it hasn’t worked out, and actually that was happening in some games down the stretch of the season as well.

I would definitely expect to see Omer against Orlando.

As much as some people have scoffed at Indiana’s approach of using Hibbert / McRoberts / Foster in rotation in the paint to share 18 fouls on Rose, realistically I’d expect we’ll be doing the same with Noah / Thomas / Asik in rotation on Howard, forcing him to the line.

I'm kind of curious if Omer has hit the proverbial "rookie wall"

82 games in a season plus playoffs is likely far more than he’s ever played before in a year. Maybe he’s just worn out?

by kbukie on Apr 21, 2011 10:31 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think there's any signs of him being worn out, that makes it sound like he was a starter.

Omer has seemed to play his best when he’s seen extended minutes, and he just hasn’t seen any extended or consistent minutes in quite awhile.

I was thinking the other day, the last time it seemed like Omer had more than a few minutes was when he wound up getting benched for that series of turnovers / dropped passes. Maybe Thibs decided he’s too risky for extended playtime in the playoffs unless he can play Hack-a-Howard. :P

He’s been playing really well.

I just wonder how much were seeing Thomas play is dictated on his playing well and how much of it is the original game plan for the series.

Thibs seems pretty rigid most of the time w/ his rotations, whatever he has planned, seems like that’s what he’ll go with unless there’s an injury or foul trouble. Maybe that’s changed though in the playoffs and he’s just going with Thomas because it’s working.

I'm hopeful Noah will pick up his scoring instead of simply his energy.

Take a few more shots and provide a tiny bit more of a threat to score. Otherwise I’m very good with the bench replacing him for the minutes they have. KT is not scoring a lot of points but doesn’t seem reluctant to shoot when he’s open.

It looks awful but I remember last year and at the beginning of the year it was going in and a decent percentage. It seems like every time he gets the ball in the high post he doesn’t have any confidence with the tornado.

That's exactly my thought.

And he’s not doing anything when he gets the ball high instead of in the low post. He waits to pass and doesn’t look for a shot. I hope Thibs tells him to shoot it more, the shots we get when he takes a long time to pass from it haven’t been good looks anyway. Perhaps if he takes some he’ll get some confidence back and a bucket or two will make him more of a threat. Someone like Korver or even Rose might lose a defender.

those home ticket prices are straight up ridicilous…i mean we have to many winning teams…i had to spend my yearly ticket allowance on that Bears Packers NFC title game

by lowkeyman on Apr 21, 2011 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

yea man, I wish I got on there in time for game 4 prices at that price

But they have since gone up. The cheapest I see on stubhub for tonight is 70 now. Good work. GO BULLS. Hopefully they pull it off tonight so you can see the sweep :)

Wow that is ridiculously cheap

I went to a Bulls – Warriors game in Oakland while I was in college. This was the year the Warriors had the cheapest average ticket prices in the league, and nosebleeds were $45 a pop.

Side note: we lost that game, thanks to Ben Gordon airballing not one but two, wide-open three-pointers in the last 20 secs. Because of that loss, the Bulls ended up a game short of the 5 seed and played Detroit in the second round, getting beat down. Conversly, the Warriors made it into the playoffs based on a tie breaker, and went on to upset the Mavs in the historic 1 v 8 match-up.

cool story. i remember the cleveland ot game AT HOME

yours was in feb, this was game 74, and there were several questionable calls (especially a varajao time out called after he slid out of bounds) that allowed the cavs the chance in to go to ot. it was their last loss at home, and the one i blamed for missing that spot and missing 50 wins, in the usual skiles-era furious finish.

they lost in new jersey too, in game 82.

Wow

I went to the game at MSG the other night, and was HAPPY I found a decent seat for $150 on craigslist.

I guess the downside to living in a place where you can get tickets that cheap (Indiana) is that you have to live in that place.

by Brooklyn Bulls on Apr 21, 2011 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Its definitely nice to go to games for cheap

But you dont get the atmosphere of the UC. I bet tonights atmosphere is going to be wild though cause pacers fans think they have a chance still and the bulls fans are going to take over Conseco (pretty nice stadium btw)

Yea man, Indy sucks especially for NBA basketball. College and High School rule Basketball out here.

Bloomington (Indiana University) is a pretty frickin awesome place for college and years after (Ive been here for 6.5 years, moving to Tampa in July, and probably back to Chicago in 2 years).

No no

Dont get me wrong. Indiana does suck. Haha. I grew up on the Southside of Chicago, then went to college at Indiana University in Bloomington. Ive been all over Indiana for the last 6 years, and it blows, but Bloomington is a pretty nice oasis in the middle of it all. Indy is alright I guess, but yea Indiana sucks haha.. go Chicago!

Wear on D Rose

I’m worried that D Rose is getting worn down physically too early in the playoffs. I really hope to see Luol play like he did this season (not like he did the last couple) and also would love to see Noah really impact the game. I could see some frustration in Rose’s face when it was clear that the team was not stepping up to help him on O.

by Jud Buechler on Apr 21, 2011 1:25 PM CDT reply actions

i agree that i could see the frustration

it seemed to me like he was letting the guys take a few shots in a row and after a few in a row didnt fall, you could just tell Derrick wasnt going to pass and was gonna take a shot

Deng is the X factor

nah, he just needs to play granger (an offensive player) even

neither guy is an all-star (i know granger made it a couple years ago, when he averaged 26pts…), but i was hoping granger would shoot more. deng can usually hold him down in the 30% or so range.

Stay up.

Just curious. Were you a Bulls fan during the “Hinrich era”?

yeah i've been a fan since 90s (though im only a kid that time)

though i cheered for dallas/sac in that dark period up to 2002..but i loved bulls again when hinrich, gordon, and deng were drafted :) (cheering hard for gordon as ROY+6th man) never stopped since then.

by JLbuLL on Apr 21, 2011 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

That's awesome.

Where we live, I honestly had a hard time finding a fellow Bulls fan before Rose came. But ever since his boom I’ve seen a lot of them. A good number don’t really care or know about the team before Rose came. Whenever I bring up the term bandwagon fans its always the same reaction. It usually ends up with “I was a fan since the Jordan days blah blah.” I’m not trying to be an elitist but that just pisses me off. It’s great to see someone who actually knows about the team pre-Rose.

Deng

Has to get the ball moving to the hoop. He is getting fouled a ton when he does that.

by Jud Buechler on Apr 21, 2011 2:00 PM CDT reply actions

Yea and it will open up the 3 ball for him too

Because they will have to defend that first step stronger.

Was thinking about this too.

Pacers ‘clog the lanes’ stuff isn’t just aimed at Rose. Deng’s a slasher principally with the ability to hit jumpers as well. I think his offense would pick up a bit if they can find a way to get him some room to work his way inside some more.

on another note

if deng is playing this shitty guarding danny granger.

what can we even expect from him when he has to guard lebron for 4-7 games

The quest for seven is on.

by sin on Apr 21, 2011 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Deng had one bad game. He was fine in Game 1.

And we don’t need to guard LeBron, everyone here keeps telling me he’s not clutch. Just triple team Mike Bibby and we’re in the Finals.

lol

on a serious note though. there was a windhorst piece yesterday about how he thought doug collins’ stop wade and let bosh/lebron win the game strategy could be key to knocking out miami if a better team tried it

The quest for seven is on.

He needs to be active from the start.

He just seems listless out there during the 1st half.

I was amused by this rhetorical pondering by Thonus:
Why does every coach have a Bogans? A guy who makes the right decision almost all the time, but can not produce good results despite that fact? Why do they continue to play these guys so many minutes? Is there value in making the right decision when you can’t hit a shot, and you put immense pressure on your teammates because no one guards you?
