2010-11 Game Preview #75: Bulls at Detroit Pistons

Every game from now on is about getting closer to securing that top spot in the Eastern Conference.  All of the major players for that top spot are in action tonight as the Bulls (54-20) face the lowly Pistons (26-48) in Detroit, the Heat (52-23) face the Timberwolves (17-28), and the Celtics (52-22) face the toughest test in the Atlanta Hawks (43-32).  The Heat should have an easy one (although they did just lose to Cleveland), so the Bulls need a win in Detroit to hold that 2.5 game lead.  Hopefully the Bulls can come away with a win and gain some ground on the Celtics.  Now, on to the game at hand.

Star-divide

Detroit's woes this year are all on the defensive end.  Detroit has been an average team on the ofensive side of the ball, but a 111.6 DRtg puts them 28th in the NBA.  Detroit's terrible defense stems from the simple fact that this is not 2004.  Ben Wallace, Rip Hamilton, and Tayshaun Prince are not nearly the defenders (or overall players for that matter) that they used to be.  Ben Gordon is not really filling it up the way he did on the Bulls either.  In short, Detroit is a mess.  Let's look at some matchups.

PG - McGrady/Stuckey vs. Rose - Wow, I can remember some Pistons fans telling me that Stuckey will be better than Rose.  HAHAHA!  But seriously, Stuckey has done a solid job on a subpar team this year.  He simply hasn't become the PG the Pistons thought he would become.  McGrady has shown some flashes this year.  Perhaps the Bulls should have signed him, but this clearly would have undone our amazing chemistry.  This matchup clearly goes to the Bulls.

SG - Hamilton vs. Bogans - Why bother discussing.  Hamilton may be getting older and slower and worse, but it's Bogans.  Matchup to Detroit.

SF - Prince vs. Deng - Prince's efficiency is way down this year.  Luol is having a career year.  Prince will struggle mightily tonight against Deng.  Matchup to the Bulls

PF - Monroe vs. Boozer - Boozer had a nice comeback game against the T-Wolves on Wednesday.  Monroe is certainly having a solid rookie year.  After some years of development, he could definitely be a solid player in this league.  But I'd take Boozer on an off night against Monroe.  Matchup to the Bulls.

C - Wilcox v. Noah - The matchup goes to the Bulls, but I am starting to get worried about Noah.  He is not looking very good these days.  It reminds me of his second year in the league (before the playoffs) when he was really starting to get better positioning and make smarter decisions, but the athleticism was not there just yet.  The injuries and flu bug have really taken Noah off his game.  Hopefully he plays tonight and plays well.

Finally, I think both the Pistons' and Bulls' seasons can be summarized in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SHSo9for6s.  Hopefully we have not forgotten that delightful game just yet.  GO BULLS!

Ah, interesting timing.

Road to the Number 1 Seed Assassination Missions:

Sixers: Mission Failed. Good thing Boston sucks. Still 2 games up.
Timberwolves: Mission Accomplished. Boozer eats a senzu bean! AND 1!!! 2.5 up again.
Pistons:
Raptors:

Congratulations to the Central Division Champions: The Chicago Bulls!
#1 Seed Magic Number: 8

Yeah it is interesting.

But I’d still be glad to see it. Rodman may be an alien, hurt the Bulls in the earlier years…but he contributed to several championships.

I think it's kind of cool

Bulls fans in Detroit tonight (which I’m sure there will be plenty of) as well as Pistons fans can celebrate the career of Rodman together.

It was a great game

but it was James Johnson’s peak as a bull, which makes me sad.

KC actually tweeted that Noah's out for tonight

So at center it’s going to be Big Sexy vs. Wilcox. I’ve never seen Wilcox play but I’ve got to assume that’s a push for us at best.

There are the guys who get you the need baskets," says Bulls reserve forward Brian Scalabrine, referring to the vital hoops that stop runs and close out games. "I have a different word for killers. I call them mother-------. And right now, Derrick Rose is the baddest mother------ in the league by far. He is the reason we win.

Hate to hear that but

if you can’t play you can’t play. Maybe tomorrow night.

A lovely story:

He said after the game Weds.

That he didn’t think practicing on it hurt it but…regardless he was “focusing on next week”. He said he’d see if he could go Friday but it sure didn’t sound like he would be. Thus I’m not surprised and bet he sits tomorrow too. I’d sure hate to see him aggravate it against the Pistons or Raptors.

by Sandberg's evil twin on Apr 1, 2011 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Absolutely.

Game shape and not rusty would be nice…but since his ankle is reacting slowly then get him healthy first. You don’t want him making a game time decision in the playoffs, specially since we’re playing the Pistons and Raptors…teams we don’t need him for.

by Sandberg's evil twin on Apr 1, 2011 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I just saw Thibs pregame

interview and he said Jo practiced this morning but they decided to keep him out. I don’t want him to aggravate it again so missing these games is fine. He has a lot more basketball to be played.

That last part about missing games being fine, and more basketball to be played

Is that you or are are you still paraphrasing him?

I didn't know that either.

I didn’t know they are the only father/son duo to both play for the same NBA team.

Ok, I've tried to stay level headed and not get too worked up over the MVP thing

but after listening to Hollinger on the NBA Today podcast earlier, I officially can’t stand that guy. He doesn’t have Rose in his top 5 MVP candidates, and it sounded like he would have him closer to 10th than 5th.

The worst part though, is that he had Kobe as his number 3 behind Howard. I need a stat person to PLEASE explain how kobe is having such a better year than Rose. If you wanna just go off PER, Kobe is at 24.09 and Rose is at 23.44. Pretty negligible difference.

Then, when you add all the other factor, like the fact that Kobe has better teammates, healthier teammates, and Rose’s team still would have home court over them if the playoffs started today, I think its pretty clear who’s more deserving. Am I missing something here? I think it’s pretty obvious that this guy is just trolling now.

I think he made his mind up early in the season

and now is going to stick to it regardless. It also always suits ESPN drones to pander to LA and Miami…what they see as the draw to the fans. Which the NBA follows suit with…all you had to do is watch that brawl game last night to see anyone within the zip code of Kobe drawing a foul. To me it’s the same effect.

Whether or not I’m right he doesn’t seem to be sticking to facts or stats that are relevant but instead just reinforcing an old opinion.

by Sandberg's evil twin on Apr 1, 2011 6:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I read it

That was solid, although even Simmons appears to be wavering on Rose

Only because of his mini-slump.

Rose’s play the past few games should bring him back around. Also, as an acolyte of “The Secret,” I don’t think Simmons could not pick Rose.

sounds like mcgrady is out tonight.

Look
I didn’t want to offend anyone by saying the "f" word or generalizing my statement to any particular sex by saying "gays" or lesbians" or "bi’s" so "homos" is the most "politically correct" term. I’m just trying to be more tact in a tactless blog.

This kind of out of the blue but...

Does anyone think Mark Schanowski sounds like kind of a douche?

He just comes off as very snarky to me.

Then again I usually only watch/listen to him on comcast, but I do know he does stuff for CBS Chicago. Maybe it’s just common homerism.
