Worst MVP argument yet: Are you kidding me Colin Cowherd?

Today I came across this video on ESPN in which Colin Cowherd uses Glen Beckian logic (minus the chalkboard) to make his case for LeBron James over Derrick Rose as the league MVP.  Below, I have done my best to return the favor by exposing Cowherd's own twisted logic and ill-researched propositions.

Star-divide

Argument 1: Lebron is asked to defend all five positions.  Derrick Rose will never be asked to defend all five positions.  Derrick Rose can't guard Amare or LaMarcus Aldridge (or as Cowherd says, "All-Ridge") like Lebron can.

Excuse me?!  Yes, let's disqualify all players under 6'8 from MVP eligibility.  Honestly, the Bulls should probably have traded Rose for Corey Brewer at the deadline.  At least he can defend multiple positions!

Argument 2: Lebron's +/- "dwarfs" Rose's.

As if +/- isn't a bad enough stat (in isolation) to begin with, he goes on to make some cockamamie statement about how when Lebron is on the floor, the Heat are +11 and when he's not playing the Heat are at 0.  Presumably these numbers are less favorable for Rose, although Cowherd doesn't actually provide any information on Rose's stats.  While this proves that the Bulls have the better bench - as if this was somehow disputed - it really doesn't say all that much about each candidate's impact on their team.  Cowherd seems to think that +/- will illuminate the value that each player adds to their team, answering the old "if you took him off of the team, they would be this much worse" question, but any savvy basketball fan, statistician, or sixth grader can point out the flaws in this line of thinking.  +/- is useful as a basic directional metric, but is subject to substantial bias depending on who is on the court and when...especially when D Wade is one of your teammates!

Argument 3: The true key to the Bulls success is Thibs' defensive system

This one has SOME merit.  However, Rose plays 37.5 minutes per game, and while he's certainly no defensive player of the year, that has to count for something.  The Bulls are the best defensive team in the league, and Derrick plays HUGE minutes.  If A = B and B = C, then I'd say that we have to attribute some of the Bulls defensive success to Derrick.  If this is true, then the Bulls defensive dominance only BOOSTS his MVP campaign.

Argument 4: The argument that Rose's Bulls are ahead of the Heat in the standings is unfair because Lebron is on a "new team with new chemistry and new injuries".  Kobe, meanwhile, has the same team, coach, and group of players.

Wuuuuhhhhhttt?!?!?!  When did Kobe enter into this discussion?!  I thought we were talking Lebron vs. Rose?!  You know...Rose...the guy with the new coach, new teammates, and a completely new system.  As opposed to Lebron...who is playing with two former Olympic teammates on a team where D Wade and Spoelstra are in their third year together.  But maybe I missed something...Also, not sure what he meant by "new injuries", but I'm going to venture a guess that Noah and Boozer's injuries were more devastating than the injuries to Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem

Argument 5: If you take away their 9-8 start, the Heat have been the best team in the league.

On Saturday, November 27th, the Heat stood at 9-8.  On Friday, December 3rd, the Bulls record stood at...wait for it...9-8!  Unless I'm mistaken (which I'm not) the Bulls now have the better record.  Therefore, since EACH TEAM's 9-8 start, the Bulls have been - by definition - better!

Note: a little research goes a long way, Cowherd!

I think it all is more complicated than that… still there was someone here who said cp3 was the best player in the league. Just because their argument may not be strong it doesn’t mean they don’t believe it or are just trying to get attention.

Skip I still say has been coming around really.

I think his first argument

in regards to Lebron defending multiple positions has merit. Not to say that anyone who can’t do that should be disqualified from the MVP discussion but that is more valuable than a player who can only guard 1 position.

by diedaily23 on Mar 30, 2011 3:44 PM CDT reply actions

This is why you have to consider the entire trend of the league when talking about individual defense

Because it will say that all centers are the best defenders, bigger players are better defenders than smaller players, and point guards are the worst defenders. When you take that into consideration, Rose becomes a good defender at his position. Same phenomenon with shooting efficiency stats.

by berzerkulous on Mar 30, 2011 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Also, aren't Amare Stoudemire and LaMarcus Aldridge PFs?

Sure, they play center sometimes when their team goes small, but using those guys to say “HE CAN GUARD 5 POSITIONS” isn’t exactly accurate. Has LeBron ever guarded a Dwight Howard, Nene, Shaq?

what i want to know is about this:
Rose has played over 2100 to lead the team, and Luol Deng runs second at a bit over 2000.

how is that possible? was there ever a time that he was averaging more minutes than luol? luol has 160 more minutes played than rose this season up to this point.

The only non-local person I’ve heard defend him as MVP in the past week was Tim Legler (and Ric Bucher, of course). It feels like the rest of the media is ripping him every chance they get

I didn't want to type this sentence, the force from an Omer Asik dunk made my fingers do it.

Re: argument 3 (defense)

According to Synergy, Rose’s defense is ranked 24th in the NBA with .76 points allowed per play. That is tied with Brewer for the best on the team, though Rose has defended roughly twice as many plays as Brewer and has played against tougher lineups. Rose is also #3 among PGs in RPG, and #1 in blocks (with .63, the same average as LeBron, despite playing fewer minutes and being a lot smaller). I know these stats aren’t perfect measures, but to argue that Rose has little to do with the Bulls’ defensive success isn’t even remotely true.

His job is to get listeners so they can get advertisers. He does that, for sure.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

…in their first return tip. And, at the very least, it would be super close. The Heat won by 28.

Not only is he wrong so often, but he’s so definitive in his predictions and answers (remember, quite often being wrong) that makes him both a dinghy and an easy target.

the “unless you’ve carried the burden of being the face of a franchise” argument. There is debate among Miami Heat fans between Lebron or Wade being the face of the Heat. Not only is Derrick Rose the face of the current Bulls, he’s the biggest star on the team since Michael Jordan. Wouldn’t standing in that shadow would be a much bigger burden?

Paul may have more an argument than anyone in the league. Without him they probably win 15 games. Also LeBron is the best player on Miami to the person who said he was not. It’s not even close. More points, assists, rebounds, steals, blocks. I like Rose. Just think he is more Iverson than Magic. Doesn’t change the fact that he is great. He will be a HOF if he keeps this pace.

Enough with the lebron bullshit

He is a CHOKER or beat the great teams THATS why hes no longer considered, The reason why the Heat are doing well now is because of Wade closig out games His closing ability is much more valuable than lebron 1st 3 quarters

As for Dwight 1. his team is 8th in the leauge who ever had an MVP when his team is 8th? Bulls have the 2nd best record and the best in the East. And its not just Thibs without Rose we would be the Milwaukee Bucks good D and ZERO offense. He does everything He plays D and has as many blocks as bron, Improved his D and shooting and attacks the paint better than anyone. Not to mention that he does something LeBrick can’t do. He plays his BEST games against the great teams and doesnt miss big FTs like bron or dwight. What other centers can challange Dwight he’s a bully against mostly PFs now. There are hardly any true centers anymore. While Rose is against much tougher competiton. How could you not get that?
