Our Magic number: Readjusted.

AKA "The combination of wins/losses for the Bulls/Celtics in order for us to clinch the EC" has been stated to be nine.

That's not the number I arrive at when I look at the standings.

More after the jump. (Cue jump)

Star-divide

Welcome to the other side of the fanpost.

As I was saying, 9 is not the "Magic number" that I come to when looking at the standings.

The celtics, being our closest competition in the ECF, is the rival against which I calculate the MN:

Their record stands at 50-21. Worst case scenario is they win their 11 remaining games ending up with a record of 61-21 also ending up with the tiebreaker against us. In order for us to still remain in 1st place in the East we would need to beat them in the standings and would have to end up with a 62-20 record. Our current record stands at 52-19 meaning our magic number stands at 10.

Any combination of wins for us or losses for the Celtics that sums up to 10 earns us the HCA.

Please inform me of any inaccuracies in this estimation. I am currently quite tipsy...

Have no idea here.

I never paid much attention to magic number formulas before but what you say sounds logical to me. Try having a few sodas until the game starts in case you want to remember it later….that is unless you have it TIVO’d lol…

No worries, man.

I’ve got to ref a game in the morning and I’ll catch it on ILP when I get back.

I don’t drink soda. Bad for your teeth. :P

seems correct to me

bulls win 9 more but lose to boston >> 61-21 (two more losses)

boston wins all 11 remaining games >> 62-20

scalabrine runs everything. fuck scalabrine!

by marionette on Mar 26, 2011 6:23 PM CDT reply actions

so... the magic number over celts is 10

i’m almost more concerned about miami, who have only bos and atl remaining for playoff teams (as of today’s standings) to face.

if they win out, they’ll finish 60-22. bulls have the tiebreaker, so the magic number over mia is 8.

scalabrine runs everything. fuck scalabrine!

by marionette on Mar 26, 2011 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't mention Miami

But we have the tie-breaker over them and a 3 game lead in the loss coloumn so we would have to lose 4 of our remaining games while they win out. Or in other words. Our MN to beat Miami is 8.

Fuck the Big Macs!

Hush!

;)

by BAB-Bass on Mar 26, 2011 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Miami is more relevant

Over the last 10 games, Celtics are spiraling at 4-6. Miami is the only real threat to prevent the Bulls from clinching 1st at this point, who seem to be pulling it together just in time.

by 4bricks on Mar 27, 2011 4:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Boston is 50 and 21

so that should be 61-21.

Boston holds the tie breaker, right?

So for Boston to catch us if they go 11-0, we should go no better than 9-2 WITH one of the losses against Boston.

by Phoenix7 on Mar 26, 2011 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

yep

i made a typo.

scalabrine runs everything. fuck scalabrine!

by marionette on Mar 26, 2011 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

also

besides m.n. (bos) = 10
m.n. (mia) = 8

m.n. (los angeles) = 11. or 10, assuming the bulls beat either one of their remaining western conf foes, minny or phx to win the tiebreaker with l.a.

scalabrine runs everything. fuck scalabrine!

by marionette on Mar 26, 2011 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Spurs, Hawks, Bulls and Heat

The Celtics could easily lose two of these game. Boston will finish between 59 and 57 wins. If w beat the Bucks, Sixers, Wolves, Pistons, Raptors, Suns, Cavs, Knicks and Nets were in. These teams combine for record 236-409.

by TRiCioNeRo on Mar 26, 2011 6:24 PM CDT reply actions

Boston just lost to Charlotte at home

I’m not going to assume they’ll beat every team but those 4.

by runningman on Mar 26, 2011 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

The Heat can win out.

If we go 8-3 the rest of the way, we still get #1.

Fuck the Big Macs!

by BAB-Bass on Mar 26, 2011 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

Bulls are in great position relative to the Heat.

by runningman on Mar 26, 2011 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Boston dosnt have a good schedule

They only 4 home games we have 5 including Boston. They are playing 7 playoff teams and we are playing 4.

by TRiCioNeRo on Mar 26, 2011 6:32 PM CDT reply actions

3 back to back games

Including Spurs away then Hawks away.

by TRiCioNeRo on Mar 26, 2011 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's do the math

From Wikipedia:

“The magic number is calculated as G + 1 − WA − LB, where
G is the total number of games in the season
WA is the number of wins that Team A has in the season
LB is the number of losses that Team B has in the season”

Thus, we have 82 total games + 1 – 52 Bulls wins – 21 Celtics losses = magic number of 10

by berzerkulous on Mar 26, 2011 6:59 PM CDT reply actions

not sure, but after head-to-head

i think the tie breaker is conference record, but the bulls (31-12) are 2 games behind boston (33-10) in that.

seems like bad math more than an assumption.

scalabrine runs everything. fuck scalabrine!

by marionette on Mar 26, 2011 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Usually the MN, if I remember correctly..

..does not always take into consideration tie breakers.

So our magic number to get at least a tie for the 1st seed is 9, but to actually clinch the top seed, our MN would be 10.

…and I think I just repeated everything that was already mentioned.

by Phoenix7 on Mar 26, 2011 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

i think you have it wrong

check the formula that berzerk provided

the guy that puts up pics of pool balls in the games threads “ahead” by one

with tonights win over milwaukee, the bulls are 53-19. the celts didn’t play, still have 21 losses.

82 + 1 – 53 – 21 = 9 now (but you did not have this information at 7:27pm)

scalabrine runs everything. fuck scalabrine!

Who are the Bullies?

Nelson, Kerney and Jimbo have a basketball team?

Road to the Number 1 Seed Assassination Missions:

Kings: Mission Accomplished. Bulls dominant, Knicks useless. Tied with Boston.
Hawks: Mission Accomplished. Be afraid, league. Be very afraid. 1/2 game up on Boston again.
Grizzlies: Mission Accomplished. Thanks for the win in Boston and the loss in Chicago, Griz! 2 games up.
Bucks:

Congratulations to the Central Division Champions: The Chicago Bulls!
#1 Seed Magic Number: 9

As the guy who posts the pool balls

I was forgetting about the tiebreaker.

The first couple I did was the magic number for us to eliminate the Heat where we do own the tiebreaker; when I switched over to the number one seed overall I forgot to include the tiebreaker.

(Baseball’s easier to keep track of; you just add the one regardless.)

Our manager wears 13, we were supposedly cursed, and we wear black. Let's play.

by ChiSoxRox on Mar 26, 2011 10:45 PM CDT reply actions

My tracking actually seems to be becoming a nuisance

I’ll stop tracking the magic number; I get the feeling having a huge pool ball pop up right after a game interrupts the game thread.

Our manager wears 13, we were supposedly cursed, and we wear black. Let's play.

by ChiSoxRox on Mar 26, 2011 11:06 PM CDT reply actions

Hey, I don't have a problem with the tracking.

I just want it to be accurate… ;)

Like my collegue Dr. H, he’s got the number wrong. It’s MN(Bos): 9 and MN(Mia): 7 after the Bucks game.

Fuck the Big Macs!

by BAB-Bass on Mar 27, 2011 7:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I feel pretty silly about forgetting the darn tiebreaker

Thanks for this thread to correct me
