2010-2011 Game Preview #70: Bulls at Atlanta Hawks
[A back-to-back preview for Tim S.! Oddly placed national TV game (due to the NCAA Tournament), TNT at 7. -ed.]
We've seen the Atlanta Hawks twice recently, in Atlanta on March 2 and in Chicago on March 11. The Bulls coulda, woulda, shoulda beat them the first time but the Hawks came back at home behind one of Hawks center Al Horford's best games and one of Rose's worst.
The Bulls beat the Hawks handily the second time in Chicago. The Bulls played great defense on Horford. Hawks point guard Kirk Hinrich played Rose well again in the first half of that game, but Rose responded by driving to the basket repeatedly until Hinrich accumulated enough fouls that he had to sit -- and then Rose really went to town on backups Jeff Teague and Jamal Crawford.
This is the rubber match, the last of three games against Atlanta, and the Bulls should be highly motivated to show they can win in Atlanta. Although the Bulls played last night and the Hawks did not, the Bulls' game was a blow out and I would hope they will feel rested. I'll take a closer look after the jump.
Although the Hawks have experimented with starting sophomore point guard Teague over Hinrich since the last game against Chicago, Teague has not been consistent and did not play at all in the Hawks' last game against Detroit on Sunday. I'm guessing the Hawks will start Hinrich, who knows Rose's tendencies well. Then again, Rose knows Hinrich as well, and let's hope he has figured out how to get him in foul trouble again. Let's also see if Rose gets the same calls in Atlanta that he got in Chicago.
Whether Hinrich or Teague starts, it is likely that Crawford will spend some time at point, because the Hawks need both shooting guard Joe Johnson and Crawford to provide offense. Rose should go to town whenever Crawford guards him because Crawford does not like to play defense.
As for Horford, the Bulls have plenty of big bodies to throw at him now, and will presumably focus on neutralizing the Hawks' best player (although not the best-paid player, right Joe Johnson?). Power forward Josh Smith and Johnson did not have good games in Chicago, but they are capable of turning it around in Atlanta. Josh Smith was great last year, right up there with Horford, but this year he fell back in love with his outside shot. Small forward Marvin Williams can also have a good game from time to time. Zaza Pechulia is an okay backup center, although the Bulls should thrive any time Horford is out of the game.
In general, the Hawks' second unit is no match for the Bulls' second unit, perhaps the best in the league. Asik, in particular, is getting better and better. If Noah has any trouble at all with Horford, Thibs should not hesitate to bring in Asik.
The Hawks have either regressed this year or several other teams have passed them by. On Hollinger's power rankings, if not in the standings, the 76ers and even the struggling Knicks have passed them by, while the Bulls have zoomed to the head of the Eastern Conference. Although the Hawks beat Detroit by eight on Sunday, before that they lost at home 87-102 to Denver and 85-106 to Miami, prompting Horford to call a players-only meeting on Saturday. Joe Johnson must wonder whether the extra money was worth passing up the chance to play with the Bulls.
Nevertheless, the Hawks will want to show they can beat the best on their home court, Horford will want to play well against his old buddy Noah, and the Bulls had better play for all 48 minutes. I trust that the memories of the March 2 loss are still fresh and the Bulls will take care of business.

I wouldn't completely disagree
with your ‘Crawford doesn’t like defense’ statment but he is perfectly capable of playing the best 1-on-1 d against Derrick, as he is pretty damn athletic and probably longest guard that Atlanta has. Not saying he will want to grind on D but it isn’t like he’s old and slow.

I think he's physically capable.
Although by this point in his career it may be impossible to overcome the muscle memory that says “get out of the way!”
Is $4.3M/yr. really the going rate
for a crappy backup center that doesn’t do anything especially useful?

Well it was before he slipped back down...
He’s still a decent career PER guy, but the last 2 years he’s slipped back…..

Well
Joe Johnson must wonder whether the extra money was worth passing up the chance to play with the Bulls.
Good thing he wanted the money. Johnson has been bad this year. As much as we complain about Rose’s ineffeciency from time to time, Johnson is having a very poor year. Not that I wouldn’t rather have Johnson playing instead of Bogans or Brewer, but I definitely would rather not have him for his albatross of a contract.

Actually, if I know NBA players, he's thinking:
“Alright, just gotta keep quiet for the first year to seem like I’m grateful for the contract, then next season I can start bitching about how I want a trade”
(Unfortunately for Joe, nobody is taking that contract)

Something about Boozer coming back from ankle problem going agaist Josh Smith and Al Horford is not too appealing.

I think I like the hawks better when Josh Smith is out.
Because Collins can provide decent defense at the center position and Horford gets more breathing room offensively. Everytime Smith touches the ball is better than Horford touching it.
Games like last night are exactly the reasons I wasn't mad at the Indiana loss.
This team bounces back better than any team in the league. The Bulls have had so many stretches where they’ve won 5 of 6 or 9 of 10 and so on. Much rather them taking that route rather than winning 15 straight then losing 5 in a row.

Don’t you think its largely a function of their defense being so consistent. When your offense doesn’t need to be much better than average for you to win, you’re in good shape.

Hollinger is breaking out his most annoying argument today:
EdKupfer ed kupfer
by johnhollinger
I don’t get the Rose for MVP talk. He’s the least essential part of a league best defense, and most essential part of a 13th ranked offense.
First, I think he’s underselling Derrick’s defensive improvement. Second, and most importantly, he never bothers to mention that he spent a large portion of the season in a lineup that started Kurt Thomas and Keith Bogans. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that without him, it’s one of the worst offenses in the league right now.
Also, even by PER standards, ROse is still a very good player. He’s not quite at the Lebron level, but he’s about top 10 and withing ab point or a point and a half of top 5. Why does he feel the need to consistently rag on Rose? Has he ever bothered to go down the rabbit hole of overrates that is Rajon Rondo? i don;t seem to recall him doing that when many people were calling him the best pg in the league.
Btw, I’m actually in agreement that Howard is more deserving. But all these people that slight Rose constantly are annoying as fuck. He’s 22, having a great year, and his team is kicking ass; give him a gd break.

"I ran into lebron last night, asked him for a dollar. He gave me 75 cents. I was puzzled, then realized he never gives you the fourth quarter"
I think it's just cause Ed Kupfer is an idiot
Read his two tweets before that one:
Boozer’s contribution to CHI’s defense datapoint #2: Utah went from 10th best defense last year to 24th this year.
Boozer’s contribution to CHI’s defense datapoint: CHI allowed 96.9 pts/100 poss with Boozer in the lineup, 98.4 with Boozer not playing.
I would love to argue this guy, but his argument against Rose involves Boozer being a good/better defender is just mind-blowingly dumb.

Yes, that has nothing at all to do with Luol Deng, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson and Omer Asik.
Nothing at all. We all just imagine that Boozer gets owned by almost any big man with skill in the league, or that the Lakers were basically running layup drills around him in the playoffs.

Some advanced stats are awful. Here's some examples.
Boozers D rating is 99, better than Roses, Watsons, Dengs, and Bogans.
Dengs PER is 15.5
Bogans O rating is 111, which is equal to Roses, and better than Boozers.

but I am surprised that it has Boozer as a positive defense +/-, assumed caveats about that stat aside.

How can Rose be the least essential part of the defense?
He logs long minutes and defends against the other team’s starting point guard in an era of great point guards. As good as Asik might be on the second unit, his minutes are far less than Rose’s and he’s often guarding the other team’s back-up center, and some of those back-up centers are really, really bad.
by Tim S. on Mar 22, 2011 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Maybe Hollinger should ask Deron Williams whether Rose is the least essential part of that defense.
I seriously don’t get the reasoning behind the “criticism” that Rose’s value is diminished because he’s the most essential offensive player on an overall mediocre offensive team. So, since Amare Stoudemire has been the most essential offensive player on the Knicks, should he be higher than Rose?
And who are the most essential offensive players on the top offensive teams, I’d like to ask Hollinger. Or, could it be that these teams feature a lot of talented scorers and coaching systems that enable them to score a lot?

A least essentially part of a league best defense?
Yeah, I guess leading all points guards (and second to Wade among all guards) with 41 blocks is not at all an essential part of perimeter defense.

Recently
Rose is blocking so many opposing PGs shots that they’re hesitating to shoot or finish on drives. This is extremely disconcerting to the other team’s offense.
