Around the NBA thread 3/14/2011: 1st seed still on the line.

Well lets hope for a Nets win here, I still believe the Celtics are weaker after the Perkins trade and the vets haven't been playing well at all.

Then of course we have the Heat/Magic playing tonight who I dont fear anymore but itll be nice to get somemore distance on them, just in case. Either way it feels good to be confident in our team again, no matter what happens we have an awesome team to root for for awhile.

Go Nets!

Hmm, do we realize that the #1 seed is not actually on the line?

Not last night and not tonight. For something to be ‘on the line’ that something would have to be dependent on a singular instance. It’s still ‘up for grabs’ but not ‘on the line.’

I think he's referring to that long stretch of winning games

against bad teams, before their losing streak and us sweeping them. And he’s right, they went on that long run winning against a lot of teams with a bad winning percentage.

by Sandberg's evil twin on Mar 14, 2011 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah

I kinda figured that out after I posted. I was thrown off by his post about the Spurs not being a real threat.

by JSB on Mar 14, 2011 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

They seem to be having their own little bad stretch now.

Guess it’s natural with an 82 game season. Los Angeles woke up from theirs and I’m sure the Spurs will as well.

by Sandberg's evil twin on Mar 14, 2011 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree

There really are 6 legitimate title contenders right now. Wouldn’t surprise me if any of Dallas, LA, San Antonio, Boston, Miami or Chicago made and won the Finals.

by JSB on Mar 14, 2011 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Heat will lose to the Thunder on Wednesday.

Perkins and (especially) Westbrook are both types of players with whom Miami struggles, and Durant and Harden can neutralize the combined scoring output of James and Wade while Ibaka blocks Bosh’s ostrich-neck into a knot.

(Or so I hope.)

by jpx7 on Mar 14, 2011 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Spurs just look terrible out there.

I had to close the feed after those twin fast-break showcase dunks by James and Wade.

by jpx7 on Mar 14, 2011 9:06 PM CDT reply actions

I think you are crazy

The Heat will have 2 of the 3 best players in that series, and arguably the two best. If I was putting money on it, I would bet on the Bulls if they have home court advantage. But it is going to be a dog-fight. There was way too much triumphalism around the NBA after Heat had their little bad stretch.

by JSB on Mar 14, 2011 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Little bad stretch?

Hell they lost 5 in a row and most of those were at home. They hadn’t proved they could beat an elite tam or win close games either. Nah they were treated fairly. Now that they are finally doing what the Bulls have been doing all season, I’m not about to send a million praises their way either. They won’t be an easy out but they deserved the criticism they got and don’t deserve to be treated like the ’96 Bulls now.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Mar 14, 2011 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Really?

The Bulls haven’t put together 3 performances like the Heat just did back-to-back-to-back. They are dismantling the best team (up to this point) in the league right after beating the defending champs.

I agree that the Heat haven’t been as consistent as the Bulls this season. But they are still fucking scary.

by Dils on Mar 14, 2011 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I never was off that train

That was my point. I don’t think the Heat are necessarily favorites to beat the Bulls. But I read way too much “I’m not worried about the Heat anymore” stuff on this blog.

by JSB on Mar 14, 2011 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah but it was for good reason

Why should the fans be scared of a team the Bulls beat 3 times this year? Hell all Miami is doing tonight is returning the ass whooping they received a week ago. That’s just how the NBA is. Right or wrong I can’t fault fans for not fearing a team that 3 games behind the Bulls and that the Bulls have beaten.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Mar 14, 2011 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Did you watch those games?

They all came down to the last possession. The Bulls could easily have lost 1 or 2 of those games. Perhaps we have a different conception of fear. Fear doesn’t mean that I don’t think we can beat the Heat. But, I am definitely nervous that they could beat us as well.

by JSB on Mar 14, 2011 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah but 3 losses?

I’ve heard the whole “the games were close” coulda woulda shoulda stuff but I’m more impressed by those wins than what the Heat did tonight to the Spurs. I’m not saying the Heat aren’t formidable or a good team, but I think it’s insults the Bulls for us to fear them like they aren’t beatable because they are. If the roles were reversed we wouldn’t even be having this discussions because everyone would assume the Heat were better and they wouldn’t be nervous about us.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Mar 14, 2011 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh

I said they are beatable. But they definitely can also beat us. If we have home-court, I give us a very slight edge. But, I’m still very, very worried about them.

And, I’m sorry but three close wins (2 of them at home) don’t tell me that the Bulls are clearly a better team than the Heat.

It just shows when Bosh gets going early they have the best chance to win while Wade finishes it off and LBJ does his thing in between. You slow down Bosh early you have a better chance to win. Each game they won it seem they just give it to bosh early.

They played great defense early in the season.

And they still beat most teams. Duncan’s defense has always been underrated, I judge. The fact that the Spurs blew out Miami and Miami blew out the Spurs just shows that we can’t make too much out of any one game.

we got a boston-LA finals and a hometown Chicago kid went #1 overall to the Bulls. The NBA is totally rigged, and on the 20th anniversary of phil and the bulls’ first championship, his streak is going on the line against his old team. stern knows it’s too perfect not to happen. the question is who the refs bet all their money on.

i could see that

its like when you find out theres a grace period of showing up to work late. You can be like 10 minutes late and leave early by 10 minutes without any reprucussions, so you do it whenever you have the chance. Or when you find out how the “diciplinary system” works at work, and you slack off enough to get that final warning, but then you go the next 6 months on perfect behavior until the warnings are wiped clean…then go back at it again…

i fear that the awards will go like this

COY-poppovich-Spurs are the number one team and no one thought theyd be as good as they are, with an aging duncan and ginobli (nm that this is a rare year where they are all healthy and manu is actually starting for once)

gm of the year-pat riley- Brought the big 3 in miami together, which is a pretty big thing really, regardless of what you think about that punk ass team

MVP-dwight howard-he really does deserve it, and though it shouldnt be, its out of left field and will make for an interesting story, THE MEDIA IS ACTUALLY ABOUT BASKETBALL (okay not really but they are gonna fool the world into thinking this for at least this year)

DPOY-kevin garnett -the celtics have improved defensively this year without thibs mainly because of this man

MIP-Derrick Rose-sorry derrick you just arent a big enough star yet to get mvp, how about a consolation prize instead?

ROY-Blake-who knows what hes actually done in the regular season, anytime anyone mentions blake griffin i just remember the new york game where he posterized the entire knicks team one at a time, and he did a dunk (just a normal one but a car hood happened to be in the picture as an “obstacle”) so he won rookie of the year sometime around december…

Yeah, a big part of me is starting to agree with you

I just don’t know if the voters will give him that award when the moment of truth comes. He’d be the youngest MVP in league history, yet he’s never won a playoff game, and while he’s having a great season, it’s not THAT great. In the end, It’ll probably come down to seeding. If we finish with the one seed, it’ll be hard for them to pass him up.

But, as I’ve been saying a lot lately, he needs to start having better games, Shooting 49% every night isn’t gonna help his cause. Plus his assists and rebounds are down a little lately too. I still know how awesome he is, but he needs some style points to impress the media that don’t watch him nightly

howard wont win mvp. his team is on pace to win 9 fewer games than they did last year

despite comparable talent. it would be unusual for a player to win an mvp under those circumstances, especially when he didnt win mvp the year before. plus, he is a likely candidate for DPOY, and they certainly wont give him both. basically, no one has really looked the part of mvp this year, which is why rose is even in the conversation in the first place, and also why he’ll probably win if the bulls finish strong (not perfect, just strong like they have been playing lately).

I was going to post

that part of the reason that Dwight hasn’t been MVP is that the voters feel comfortable just giving him defensive player of the year, every year. Unless Orlando gets the number one overall seed, I don’t see any chance of him winning both.

by runningman on Mar 15, 2011 6:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Is he the best player on the best team?

If Orlando had a better record than the Bulls, Howard would get more votes.

by Tim S. on Mar 15, 2011 1:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Is that what MVP should be?

i didn’t say I think Howard will win it, just that he should win it.

by JSB on Mar 15, 2011 9:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Some would argue Kevin Love should win it, then.

MVP is never about the best player, full stop. The other factors involved are fuzzy, but certainly the team’s record affects the vote.

by Tim S. on Mar 15, 2011 9:48 AM CDT up reply actions

I didn't say best stats

You really think Kevin Love is the best player in the league? Kevin Love would be about 25th on my list. Comparing Howard to Love is pretty dumb.

by JSB on Mar 15, 2011 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I've been thinking about this

You know why Howard isn’t MVP and Rose is? Because who are Dwight Howard contemporaries at the position? Who Bogut, Bynum and Noah? That’s it. Rose is playing in the golden era of PG play in the NBA and he’s outplaying all of them. It’s not the only reason but perhaps another good reason to give Rose the nod over Howard.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Mar 15, 2011 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Doesn't the fact that he doesn't have any contemporaries kinda validate his candidacy?

Dude’s a freak

(Also, it might be viewed as an indictment of Rose. You COULD say that the reason Rose is having success, and the reason there are so many great point guards, is because the rules make it easier for them to dominate. Therefore, the fact that Howard is able to kick so much ass at that position, makes it all the more impressive)

I didn't want to type this sentence, the force from an Omer Asik dunk made my fingers do it.

by Juiceboxjerry on Mar 15, 2011 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

No way!

He doesn’t get credit because he’s playing in an era in which he’s able to dominate. That’s like Shaq in the 2000s Sure he was able to dominate but in the mid 90s he had to still deal with the Ewings, Olajawon’s and Robinsons of the world. It’s not a testimony to Howard’s talent that he’s dominating now. It’s because there aren’t many 7 footers want to be Dirk Nowitski and aren’t putting their back to the basket that’s why. So him dominating is a credit to , his skill but 2, because he’s one of the few around to do it.

Rose is dominating in an era where the PG position is at it’s richest. Not because of rules but because they are that good. No one was talking about rule changes 3 years ago when it was just Paul, Dwill , and Nash so let’s not hang that on Rose, Westbrook, and Wall. These guys are good because they are superior athletes at the position. 5-10 years ago these guys would have been tweener SGs like AI and Wade. But these guys are the exception because they chose to actually play PG yet still have the strength and skill of a SG. So instead of being “tweeners” they are now “hybrids” in that sense of the word.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Mar 15, 2011 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Sentence fail

It’s because all the 7 footers want to put there back to the basket and be Dik Nowitski and they aren’t putting their back to the basket that’s why.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Mar 15, 2011 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Give Omer a couple years

And Howard will have a contemporary ;)

In all seriousness though, if Bynum got his head out of his butt, and somehow stopped getting injured, he could give Howard a run for his money. Bynum was the reason the Lakers won last night.

I know in a lot of ways there’s no comparison, but not having seen great, big centers go at it before, I thought that it may have been somewhat similar to what Chamberlain-Russell might’ve been like.

I know that’s probably too far. But when have we seen great big man battles (in the past two decades?) (I mean, real, really big, big men.)

by Juiceboxjerry on Mar 14, 2011 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

yes

its that order right, so the winner of the 1v8 plays the winner of 4v5?

in which case if the bulls get the 1st seed, we avoid one of boston or miami until the conference finals, yet if (when!!!!!) we advance to the second round we will face either new york or orlando. Orlando scares me mainly because howard might kill rose (in the literal sense) and new york….well its hard to gauge how the bulls would stack up against them until we play them, but that toney douglas dude goes off on us.

meanwhile, i think the celtics will go all out on the heat, and if they dont defeat them, maybe they can wound them.

i think it be perfect for the Bulls if the Celtics and Heat matched up in the 2nd round

and the Celtics took out the Heat. I fear the Heat, I don’t fear the Celtics. However, in the poll I voted for the Lakers. Because I’m really starting to believe the Bulls will beat the Celtics or Heat in a 7 game series. The Lakers, to me, are just cruising in the regular season. They more than any other team I think will turn it up in the playoffs.

id love for the celtics to play the heat before facing us (hopefully)

because theres no way its easy for either team (god i hope the celtics stay healthy in the playoffs) regardless of who advances out of those two, the teams will be exausted and sore in a long grueling series, meaning the bulls will have an easier time picking off whoever is left standing….

I'm not scares of the Celtics at all

We would have the best player in the series, plus they don’t have that size factor anymore. I want them badly in the playoffs. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll be seeing them because the Heat are gonna take them out (if we get the one seed), and they scare the hell out of me. I think it will be a close series, but that team is just frightening when they’re going well.

The celtics would be so much damn better with westbrook, and durant would get to take even more shots, and rondo would get to pass to a guy who scores at will while also getting some more close time with perk (i think i now know why they call him perk….ugh)

Can't believe how many people voted for the Celtics

who are pretty much pinning all their hopes on 40 year old Shaq being healthy and back to form.

They’re strictly a jump shooting team now, except you can not only back off Rondo, you can leave him wide open and he still won’t attack the basket. 2 free throws in the last 5 games.

me too, though i don't know that they'd win games in blow out fashion, necessarily.

also, i think boston, besides foreseeing perk not resigning with them (or being unwilling to pay him), know the bulls are a much bigger threat than the magic or the heat (i know you disagree, but they will handle the heat – they did without perkins).

i wonder if they didn’t think they’d create more mismatch problems for the bulls with jeff green than with perkins.
