AROUND THE NBA 3/10: Cry me a Lake(rs)

Will they cry? Won't they cry?

WHO KNOWS?!

Hoping Miami loses again as usual but I want L.A. to start losing just in case we see them in the Finals.  Anyways fun games tonight. Heat and Lakers then Knicks and Mavs.  I know I'll be watching both games.

Go Kobe. Go Melo (ANYONE SEE THAT GAME WINNER BY THE WAY?! CLUTCH!!) <---helps my bit and fills that damn word requirement. fun huh

meanwhile, we are hopeless against Miami in the playoffs

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ycn-8036058

I know this guy is on the Miami bandwagon but dear lord.

If I got Derrick Rose in a room alone what I would do is not acceptable by law. But it would result in our kids.

LOL

That article is one of the most ridiculous I’ve read in a long time.

Save for extremely rare occasions, the best team wins over a seven game series in basketball. And, even though recent struggles have led to the Heat falling below the Bulls in the league standings, the Miami Heat clearly have a more talented team than the Chicago Bulls.

Sure they do. You just keep losing to random teams? Because you’re awesome? I’m sure.
You want to talk about deep teams? The Los Angeles Lakers can bring Lamar Odom(notes), Shannon Brown(notes) and Steve Blake(notes) off their bench. The Celtics boast Shaq, Jeff Green(notes), Glen Davis(notes) and Troy Murphy(notes). These are actually productive benches.

Yeah, I dunno, this guy’s own quotes condemn him here.

I only post cotton candy. Because it's delicious.

by Prevenge on Mar 10, 2011 7:49 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

You missed the best paragraph:
The Bulls are essentially four players deep before there is a significant drop off in production. After you get passed Rose, Boozer, Noah and Deng the next best players are Kyle Korver, Taj Gibson and Ronnie Brewer all of whom average six to seven points and don’t intimidate anyone. After that, Gibson, Brewer and Korver, the list of players just gets more embarrassing if you believe that’s possible. Unfortunately for the Bulls, they are in no position to dismiss a bench of Eddie House, James Jomes, Mike Bibby, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mike Miller.

I guess Eddie House, James Jones*, Mike Bibby, Ilgauskas and Miller intimidates someone, somewhere (oh ya, the youth basketball association). And that Gibsos, Brewer and Korver are our only bench players, with no mention of CJ, Kurt Thomas, or Asik. The guys that he listed may not even get minutes over Bogans.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

The bench comments are pretty asinine

He likes the fact that the Heat have big names that are totally washed-up on their bench. The Bulls bench destroys the Heat’ bench in actual production this year. This guy really isn’t paying much attention this year.

Everyone is beating Miami right now, and people kind of expect the Lakers to win. At this point, I really think it would be more embarrassing for them, rather than the Heat.

by Juiceboxjerry on Mar 10, 2011 7:46 PM CST reply actions

id rather have matt barnes than korver tbh. maybe im alone on that

but barnes may be a streaky shooter but hes a good defender and defense isnt something that wavers game to game unless youre just not trying. even great shooters can go cold.

what the lakers are missing honestly is….hinrich
they need a defensive point who can slow down point guards and knock down the occasional three

Yeah, but they already have Artest for that defensive wing player

Korver could fill a more needed role. Artest and Barnes are kinda redundant, even though Barnes is a better shooter. Idk, I just think a deadly shooter like that would make them frightening. Plus, they have the requisite frontcourt to cover up for Korver’s defensive lapses. I think he would’ve been amazing on that team.

Durant would shoot over the top of Manu all day long

I don’t think that would be a good matchup for the Spurs.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

You sure about that?

Dirk’s killed us in Dallas, but we did a really good job on him in Chicago (without Noah). In particular I remember Thibs switched Deng onto him at the end of both halves and he shut him down. Seems like Noah could cover him as well.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 8:58 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I can buy that

Still think we have as good of guys to cover him as anyone in the league.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

I went to that game

Dirk was solid, if he was bothered by it, it didn’t show.

Though in that game, Tyson was hustling out there, and D. Rose struggled.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Mar 10, 2011 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

You watch the same game as me?

Rose carried the Bulls offense in that game. He didn’t shoot a great percentage, but it was basically a one-man show. He scored 28 points too.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

Correction

He had a 26-9-7 line with 2 blocks. Also was 6-6 from the FT line.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

Don't cherry pick your stats

9-28 is not very good shooting, 4 TOs as well. Not saying D. Rose didn’t do good that game, his stat line in the end was good, but it was one of his most inefficient games of the year.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Mar 10, 2011 9:06 PM CST up reply actions

Notice how all I said was "he struggled that game"

And then I said it wasn’t his most efficient game. Nothing about him not carrying the team or winning the game for us, nor did I say anything him not being good that game. Merely that he struggled, and that it was one of his most inefficient games.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Mar 10, 2011 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

i guess its your interpretation of struggle

to me struggling is shooting low , not being able to get to the line, not scoring etc etc.

He didn’t “struggle”. He played a really good game.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry, D Rose has a lot of really really good games this year

In comparison, this game was a struggle and a grind-it-out type of game. I don’t really see how there is an argument for this, all I said it certainly wasn’t his best game, nor one of his really good games this year. D Rose has struggled in games this year, and we still won because of him. Its called an MVP.

He put the Bulls on his back in that game

Yes, he missed some shots. That doesn’t mean he didn’t play a good game. I don’t know why you are being so difficult on this point.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

Every game D Rose plays is a good game

I said he struggled to where he should be. I didn’t say he didn’t put the Bulls on his back in that game, nor did I say anything about him not being good that game. I said he struggled, and it wasn’t his most efficient game. Absolutely nothing about him carrying the Bulls that game.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Mar 10, 2011 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

I'm telling you he didn't struggle

This isn’t based on stats. It’s based on me watching that game. He was the only Bull that could get shots off in that game. No Boozer, no Noah and Luol shot 3-13.

As a result Rose took a ton of shots with a very high degree of difficulty. Even though he only shot 9-28, he played a good game. Especially when you consider he had 9 assists and 7 rebounds.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:27 PM CST up reply actions

I guess we will agree to disagree

I thought this was game was more of a struggle, since he had to take so many high degree difficult shots. D Rose has had a lot better games this year, been more efficient, and has gotten less help around him and we’ve still won (and lost).

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Mar 10, 2011 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think we really disagree
I thought this was game was more of a struggle, since he had to take so many high degree difficult shots

I would agree with that. That the game was a struggle. But I don’t think that Rose struggled. To me that was more impressive than a super-efficient game against a bad opponent when the rest of the Bulls were rolling.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:39 PM CST up reply actions

I didn't cherrypick any stats

I said in the initial post he didn’t shoot a good percentage. But he played a really good game regardless. It was one of his better performances of the year. He basically single-handedly beat one of the best defenses in the league.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

What the are you talking about man?

Maybe you can’t see what we can see (on TV) but he was definitely still bothered by it. Matter of fact, it was mentioned by the commentators several times as well. He came back before he was fully ready because they’d lost so many games with him out.

by chicity773 on Mar 10, 2011 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

Perhaps, he still put in a lot of good work on Taj that game

He was still very easily able to out-muscle and out-play out front court (though Tyson Chandler did good). And looking at the box score, yeah, I guess he did struggle.

You’re impressions of that game are pretty far off. Dirk didn’t play well, and Derrick did.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

Out muscle and out-play?

Come on now. He had 2 rebounds, in 38 minutes of play. Our ENTIRE starting lineup had more rebounds than him, and of course, that includes Bogans. Not too sure what you’re talking about still. Maybe you were too busy looking up at the jumbo-tron or watching the Dunkin Donuts face or something.

by The Voiss on Mar 10, 2011 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

Dirk didn’t out-play anyone that game. Asik getting so much burn probably had more to do with Chandler than with Dirk.

Taj is a fouling machine.

Not surprised. Doesn’t prove he was “out muscled” or “out played.” Actually might even prove otherwise…

Don't worry, I'll read your first sentence and ignore the rest

It’s not like my 2nd sentence admitted that it could’ve been Tyson Chandler that was doing good. Then looking at the box score, that Dirk struggled. I guess, when my 2nd sentence completely nullifies my first, we should only look at the first sentence and assume everything based on that.

I think at this stage, assuming we get out of the east, the only team I wouldn't really wanna see would be the Spurs

They are currently awesome at everything. Offence, D, passing, shooting, 3 point, low post, rebounding, great coach, experienced players, depth and role players that are great at their roles.

When you’re good at everything, it makes it easier to adapt to your opponents and develop a game plan to unravel them, And they do this with a cool demeanor and deadly efficiency.

In a 7 game series they will be very tough to beat.

Hey, we do too I’m not saying they CANT be beaten, I just think they’ll be the toughest in a series for US to beat.

We are a very good team, but quite young and a little mistake prone and streaky at times, Spurs will punish that kind of play in the finals. They have their O and D system fully worked out, their player roles and rotations are clearly defined and understood, they are fully poised for a title run right now.

Of course the age, injury factor for them is always there, but this year I think they are pretty healthy and focused.

He had to go man.

You could sort of tell they weren’t really playing as a “team” all year. They’re more of a connected unit now it seems. Like those guys actually like each other. When Melo was there, that didn’t really appear to be the case.

by chicity773 on Mar 10, 2011 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

Couldn't some of that be because he made noise about wanting to leave in August?

I blame Melo for the discord. If he took the LeBron approach and deferred any decision until the off-season, they would have been fine. But, he wanted to leave and he wanted to get paid.

Perhaps LeBron deserves some credit for playing his contract out last year, and being willing to take less money.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=310107020

They beat us by 6, after we beat them by 50. I guess, it just comes down to, I don’t think the Heat can guard Noah/Boozer/Taj/Asik for 7 games, if it even makes it to 7 games.

Bears. Bulls. White Sox.

by The Voiss on Mar 10, 2011 10:07 PM CST up reply actions

True

The second game we should of blown them out but the refs let them back in the game in the 4th. Once LBJ and Wade started driving directly into people the refs whistles started blowing. The 3rd game we we’re up and Derrick’s turnovers let them back in the game. We really haven’t had a complete game against them and they have given us their best shots.

by Bullsfanla on Mar 10, 2011 10:07 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I think you're being a bit of a homer

The second game was not really close to a blow-out. They handled us in the first half. Third game was very close as well. I think the Bulls are better right now, but I’m not writing the Heat off yet.

by JSB on Mar 10, 2011 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

Not a homer ... more a Peter

Remember that blew two bunnies that should of put us up double digits and then Wade and LBJ started that running into a brick wall offense. That ot them back into the game.

by Bullsfanla on Mar 10, 2011 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

I respect them

James and Wade are two of the baddest players on the earth. But our team is better point blank period. From top to bottom better roster, better coach. The Lakers choked tonight because Kobe hogged it up at the end. I’m not worried at all about the Heat.

i get to see melo doing that iso jab step knocking down shots AND the knicks are getting killed

The Sixers are so unpredictable

We beat them by 45, then lost by 6. And now, Evan Turner is actually showing up, Elton Brand is playing like he is 5 years younger, Jrue Holliday is playing better then Brandon Jennings, but the thing is, I can see all of that turning around come playoff time and them regressing.

I have no idea what to expect from them.

Dallas is really a pleasure to watch.

Offensively, they pick at your weaknesses all game long, create and then take advantage of mismatches. On defense, they do tons of different things, and defend the paint much like the Bulls do. Carlisle has done a great job with this squad. They play the game right.

I said at the top of the thread that the lakers had more to lose with a loss than the Heat. people were expecting the Heat to lose. The fact that the Heat won, and Kobe was the guy that couldn’t close, is pretty shitty for him.

How are the games split?

Bulls play their division rivals 4 times, and the rest of the eastern conference teams 3 times each? Or is it something totally different?

by BlackStar on Mar 10, 2011 11:24 PM CST reply actions

It's confusing and random:

1. NBA SCHEDULING FORMULA
Each team have to play:

    * 4 games against the other 4 division opponents, [4×4=16 games]
    * 4 games against 6 (out-of-division) conference opponents, [4×6=24 games]
    * 3 games against the remaining 4 conference teams, [3×4=12 games]
    * 2 games against teams in the opposing conference. [15×2=30 games]
