RUMOR PRESS: Bulls were offered Salmons and Steven Jackson but say no? C Lee and Brad on the table?

Other players with larger contracts are there for the Bulls taking, but the team is unwilling to add any big deals with the uncertainty of the future collective bargaining agreement. The Bucks have offered former Bull John Salmons for practically nothing; C.J. Watson, Keith Bogans and maybe a second round pick, but the Bulls aren’t interested in absorbing his large 5 year contract. Stephen Jackson has been offered as well, but the Bulls would have to deal too many pieces (Ronnie Brewer, Asik, Watson, etc) to get him and are just not interested

Interesting if true.

The most recent talks have the Rockets sending Courtney Lee and Brad Miller to the Bulls in exchange for Keith Bogans and Omer Asik.

Wow I'd have to think about that but doesn't Brad make too much money?

Understandably so. They sure as hell aren’t worth all that.

Yeah, none of that stuff is worth it

Salmons is making too much and is way too erratic. Smae for Stephen Jackson. Mayo and Lee are the guys. Get one of those and I’ll be happy

While Lee/Miller is an ok compromise, I think we're better off offering to get them under the luxury tax

I still see no reason for the Griz to trade Mayo. They need to make the playoffs, and I don’t see that we’re in a position to help them with that.

The Rockets can certainly hold out too… it’s not like the pick(s?) we’re offering are that great. What, to my knowledge, we haven’t done, is stepped up and offered a deal that gets the Rockets under the luxury tax. We seem right on the cusp of being able to do that, and at little expense to ourselves, we could save them something like $10M. That’s probably a bigger inducement than a late round pick or two, and seems like the best deal we could make without giving up one of our young bigs. So… I hope it gets made tomorrow. If it doesn’t, I’ll actually be kinda pissed.

what is the luxury tax? 69? 71 million?

Couldn’t the Bulls get them under the tax by taking on Lee and Jeffries for Brewer, Scal and 2 #1 picks?

by Basketball Smurf on Feb 23, 2011 11:08 PM CST up reply actions

LT is 70.1

I think the trade you out would do it, except we’d have to send Scal to a 3rd team (any team in the league could do it since any team can absorb minimum salary players even if they’re over the cap) along with cash to compensate them for the remaining Scal sal and their effort.

Seems quite possible to me.

I wonder if the dismantling of Denver and Utah

Leads Memphis to hold on to Mayo. The bar for reaching the playoffs in the west just got lower, and Memphis is in line to usurp their position. Does this sway them away from dealing Mayo?

by chowder on Feb 24, 2011 12:45 AM CST up reply actions

no to Stephen Jackson because he's a poor fit, not because he makes too much

if you see this and don’t at least think of changing allegiances, I don’t know what to tell you

I won't freak so much since RumorPress hasn't proven to know much

but KC’s said something similar weeks ago and that makes it a bit frightening.

Not really

He always uses that same quote from a few years ago. He’s still never proven that he’s willing to spend

Yeah, it is frightening

They’re certainly selling that “But, we can lose D Rose!” nonsense. Sad thing is, I’m not sure what to believe. Plus I don’t know what’s actually available. For example, if I found out that they had a shot at getting Andre Igoudala, but didn’t go for it because of financial reasons, I would be beyond pissed. As it stands, I can’t get too mad about possibly passing on SJax or Salmons

meh, I think that is just their conclusion

‘not adding big contracts because most of this players suck and are not worthy 4-5 seasons’ is more likely

I'd be concerned

If there was mention of us turning down players we actually would want.

by Grinder in Training on Feb 24, 2011 9:57 AM CST up reply actions

Ordinarily I'm all in on the Reinsdorf-bashing

but I have to say, I’d be leery of any big deals right now too, especially since we have NO idea what the future will look like. What if they get rid of Bird rights, and the fact that we’re over the cap means we can’t re-sign Derrick? What if we have to have a fire-sale of Noah and Booz because of salary rollbacks? I wouldn’t take those risks.

As Sacramento's only major league sports team, the Kings' fanbase has been among the strongest in the league even during the franchise's lean years, which could just be a testament to how little there is to do in Sacramento.

Furthermore

Limiting the number of stars one team is able to sign is actually bad for the league, as stars collecting in the large markets drives up interest and TV ratings.

by chowder on Feb 24, 2011 12:55 AM CST up reply actions

I'll admit the post that I made was reactionary and unrealistic.

However, I don’t think that the owners in Indiana, Memphis and Sacramento would agree that getting all of the stars in big markets is a good thing- it sure as hell isn’t when they’re not selling half of their seats every night. Part of the CBA dilemma is that small markets are getting hosed.

As Sacramento's only major league sports team, the Kings' fanbase has been among the strongest in the league even during the franchise's lean years, which could just be a testament to how little there is to do in Sacramento.

by Chalkwhite on Feb 24, 2011 1:27 AM CST up reply actions

Yea, the second battle within the CBA

Is between large market owners and small market owners, and honestly I think the results from this debate will impact the NBA more than the players v. owners debate.

by chowder on Feb 24, 2011 1:43 AM CST up reply actions

that's possible. i think there's a legit chance of contraction of 2-4 teams in the next two years

Very well said

One of the many reasons why this whole thing about possibly losing Rose is bullshit. The very fact that the Bulls are putting it out there is pretty bad news.

While I don't care for their product...

The scenario you describe essentially outlines the NHL’s most recent collective bargaining agreement, only the players had to miss one season in order to understand it was that serious.

stephen jackson doesn't fit for three reasons

he makes too much

he is too old

he “jacks” shots

the bad contract is as valid as the other two

Asik should be untouchable

Unless the trade is a game-changer. Thomas is not our backup C of the future. These guys don’t grow on trees. Asik is more than legit at C and he’s on a bargain contract. Thomas is off the team next year and Brad Miller could fall apart without notice. Lee isn’t bringing Chicago a championship, so this is a big no.
