2011 Free Agency: Caron Butler signs with Clippers

One of the reportedly more prioritized targets of the Bulls, Caron Butler, is off the table. Signed a 3yr, $24m contract with the Clippers, per David Aldridge. You'll note it's a figure that's bigger than the MLE, so the Bulls were literally outbid on this, not out-recruited. If that makes you feel better.

Lots of other signings going on today, on the eve of when signings can be official. I said I wouldn't freak until the likes of Butler or Richardson were gone, because those are the high-end UFAs: good enough to matter, and attainable as a straight signing without giving up assets. So one of those down is a pretty big hit to the Bulls plans.

me too.

i knew the wait and see approach they always use (and just damn used again) would bite them in their not-do-anything ass.

if Jason Richardson isn’t signed by tonight, it’s a failure. If they aren’t able to afford Atlanta’s demands for Crawford then they sure as hell arent going to pay for Iggy or Roy. Richardson, it seems, is literally the only option left other than keeping the Chemistry 15 intact for a second consecutive year of Keith Bogans starts. Screw the ORG. It’s time to stop waiting, it’s time to get banner #7. The Battier went to a rival, the Hawks want most of our bench for Crawford, and Butler is playing for Vinny Del Negro. I understand it’s cold in Chicago but we can do better than this.

Sign Jason Richardson right now and be done with it. Jeez.

The Bulls pattern tends to be doing things quietly until it's done

and then us fans are basically blind-sided from it. Of course, the exception being last summer. But to wit: The Hinrich trade, the Tyrus trade, the Salmons trade, etc. The Bulls FO is usually pretty tight-lipped (just as Reinsdorf’s checkbook is tight-lidded). But I hope that by the end of the weekend the Bulls will have used their MLE, made a trade, or both.

Great teams don’t just sit back and let the market dictate everything. And we don’t have the cap space to be patient.

We couldn't match this offer with out a S&T

Paying Butler $20+mil and giving up Watson or Korver isn’t going after someone…its actively making the team worse. The Bulls don’t have the ammo to get one of their top targets to sign on the dotted line and stop talking to other teams. Especially not until they can officially make a S&T. then this is probably the best that the Hornets can get for him. A good Rondo contract, an average wing and picks for a short-term rental. It’s better than a straight-up deal for Gasol.

CP3, and old (and right now overrated, though top 20 player Kobe), Artest, Odom, and a 50 game season from Bynum doesn’t scare me.

Now if they could make another move to nab Stoudemire (since he’s crazily perhaps on board, or the ridiculous DHO rumour, then maybe….but I think there good assets are too old for Howard, and I don’t know how STAT could get there esp with the Knicks close to getting Chandler (if that’s not already a done deal).

The year before that, which was each player’s best season to date, Crawford was also clearly better (18.4 PER vs. 14.6 PER). They’re both crummy defenders. Mayo’s probably a bit closer to average, but Crawford’s also more athletic, so I think he has higher potential there if Thibs can get him to actually give a shit.

The Clippers pursuit of a SF is very similar to our pursuit of a SG

That was their glaring hole. Only they had a little more ammunition to get it done. Everyone had Tayshaun Prince going there, but since he re-signed with Detroit, that made it clearer who they had to go and get (and overpay for). Dumb signing, but understandable. The Bulls believe, with multiple targets still available, they will be able to sign an upgrade at shooting guard at their price. I’m not suggesting that this is the position of the org (because I don’t think it is) but, in light of Smith (Chandler too) Butler can bugger off.

by soxfan3530 on Dec 8, 2011 4:14 PM CST up reply actions

The other title contending teams...

have done nothing of consequence! The Heat have signed Shane Battier. That’s it. The fact that they are rumored to be interested in Billups, who they have no real chance of picking up, will just add to their track record of disloyalty to the vets who sign with them. They will not be getting many more Shane Battiers after they have thrown three veteran PG’s under the truck!

In other news, the Mavs, who actually won the title, will lose Chandler. They are definitely out of contention as a result.

The Celtics are proposing foolish trades that no one would accept and are coming off like the NBA’s town slut!

The Knicks are not now, nor will they ever be, title contenders.

The Lakers admittedly have me a bit scared but that Houston trade sounds too stupid to be true.

OKC/Memphis…nothing!

In 2 months, the Clippers will be universally reviled for doing this. Every time they are one move away from becoming a contending team, people will point out the idiotic Caron Butler contract where they threw a three year contract at a player that went down by February!

Relax! The Bulls will make a move. I am guessing Jamal/JRich + Hill. This will be accomplished via sign and trade/full MLE + baby MLE. JRich needs to take a pay cut but I am not without hope that he may think that it is worth it. I am also not ruling out a bolder move involving a trade for Iggy/Mayo/?. This will cost us front court depth.

Just because piss poor GM’s are behaving like fools does not mean that our front office needs to! When this is all over, you will thank God that you are not a Clipper/Nets/Detroit fan living with a capricious and idiotic general manager.

Piss poor GM's behaving like fools just made Richardson more expensive than the MLE

And Atlanta wants Asik+Brewer+Korver+Charlotte pick for Crawford. And Hill is an SF, not an SG. And why the fuck do we have any interest in Nene?

by kpd on Dec 8, 2011 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

The Bulls seem to be casting for both an SF and and SG.

Deng cannot play the kind of minutes that he has been playing in a shortened season. As such, we need backup and Jimmy Butler is untested. As such, we want Hill. We definitely need Hill to take a pay cut, but it seems a possibility.

On top of that move, we are obviously in the market for an upgrade at SG. No one is disputing this. JRich was always more expensive than an MLE. We knew that he would only join up if he would take a pay cut to get on board with a contender. You are right in pointing out that this may mean that he is leaving too much on the table as his market value is now way up. I cannot think of an action from our front office that would have prevented this. Maybe a concrete offer to JRich but it is not clear that they have not done this already.

As far as a the Crawford trade, I have yet to hear any talk of Asik / Charlotte pick being included in any of the rumors. If this is the case, link it.

That Nene thing is bizarre. I do not know where it came from or where it went.

OT, but I think the Howard situation will play out like the Melo saga
KBergCBS
If you’re wondering why there’s been no Dwight Howard talk, source says Magic GM Otis Smith is “nowhere near” considering trade offers yet.

by bryield on Dec 8, 2011 4:44 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, plus it's complicated by the fact that the All Star game is in Orlando this year

Sounds to me like Orlando is scared to press Howard for his plans, because they’re afraid of what kind of answer they’ll get. So they’ll just gladly live in denial until a) the situation becomes too ugly to bear, and they move him for less than they could’ve gotten or b)he pulls a Lebron and just leaves them with egg on their face at the end of the season.

They’re making the same dumb mistake that the Raps and Cavs did. Denver and Utah are the blueprint for dealing with these upset stars. When the writing is on the wall, you gotta make a move

I'd be surprised if we ever see a Deron Williams-type trade again

I can’t imagine that a team will give up young talent + lottery picks for a short-term rental. Golden St. was offered Chris Paul for Stephen Curry and they laughed in NOH’s face.

I will never doubt the Chairman again.

by nateroth on Dec 8, 2011 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

The only difference with Denver is that they did hold out for a while

and eventually got the Knicks to trade them the entire team for Melo. However, I think that situation was a function of the fact that Melo only wanted to go to New York.

Howard, on the other hand, may be willing to make a long-term commitment to a few teams, in which case you might be right – the quality of the offers may decline as the process drags on.

OT but Bulls related

They’re showing real madrid on our local bball channel, and Nikola Mirotic has been really impressive so far. Scoring 22 of first 37 pts of Madrid on a variety of shots in 15minutes. Low post, up and under, pivots, fade aways, perimeter shots. And he is playing with veterans.

This guy, offensively is NBA ready. Just needs to get stronger and needs to improve Big man D. He plays the Zone well, doesn’t get lost and makes a lot of deflections because of his length
