Afflalo: Sources told ESPN.com that the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, despite possessing no cap space to bid for the 26-year-old swingman, will continue to press the Nuggets to see if they’re amenable to sign-and-trade discussions. Sources say New Jersey and Minnesota, meanwhile, are among the teams with salary-cap space weighing whether to extend an offer sheet after free agency officially starts Dec. 9 that the Nuggets will have three days to match to keep Afflalo.

I guess that all depends on...

whether or not the Lakers are going to move ahead with a trade for Howard involving a mixture of Gasol/Odom/Bynum. I’m not sure how much cap space that would free up for them, especially if Howard asks for a max contract (which he probably will), but it probably puts the Lakers in a better position than they are now. As for us, who would we trade? Taj? and how much space does that free up for us then to offer a decent contract? I can’t see Afflalo going to Minny, but I can see him going to the Nets

the new rule allowing

more than just 120% salary coming back doesn’t apply? I thought the CBA had something so you wouldn’t have to throw in extra players to move deals along. Or does that not apply with sign and trades.

good post, and I essentially agree

although the trade might be costly. If we can get it done for Korver, Watson and Taj I’d probably do it.

Brewer, Korver and Asik seems like too much to give up… but then again Afflalo’s game is exactly what we’re all pining for.

would you do the first one I mentioned?

Korver-Watson-Taj?

That would leave us with Rose-Afflalo-Deng-Boozer-Noah as our starting 5 and Brewer, Butler and whoever else coming off the bench (TJ Ford maybe? Bogans?).

Guilty Simpson should be our starting SG

by Rose Colored Goggles on Dec 2, 2011 1:43 PM CST up reply actions

Why would you give up Rose's only real back up?

I’d give them Taj and Brewer.

But in saying that, I’d give Memphis Taj straight up for Mayo. A deal that’s much more appealing

we can sign another backup pg

we may sign another backup pg anyway. Regardless, Watson was included only for salary purposes. I don’t see him as an asset Denver would want with Miller and Lawson already on the roster.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 2, 2011 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

well sure

but would Memphis accept that? I’d totally do it if so.

I like the idea of keeping Korver if we trade for Afflalo (3 pt marksman off the bench).

I think the deal would have to involve...

Taj + Brewer + either Bogans or Pargo’s non guaranteed contracts. Then the Bulls would need to use their MLE on a back-up PF…

New signature coming...but its a process.

I like Taj.

But I like this idea even more, I think.

Depending on who they’d sign as a back-up PF, and for how much, they might even be able to squeeze in a contract for someone like Battier to back-up Deng.

by jpx7 on Dec 2, 2011 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

I think Affalo might be the best fit on paper for us, but I’m not sure if he’s going to be able to create and make big shots throughout the year. I’m not sure if I would be willing to give up someone like Taj or Asik for him right now.

I'm with you

I’d rather have a guy who can draw a defense himself as opposed to having another guy playing off Rose. However, I’m starting to believe that Thibs is trying to recreate the Boston team in Chicago and Afflalo is much closer to what would work in the system Boston runs. Why else would the Bulls be so interested in so many of these type of players?

I look at this as the Bulls pursuing someone who fits the system Thibs likes to run.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 2, 2011 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

if this is the Boston system

hmmm…I’d say the problem is Deng is no Pierce, but they get by with Rondo having little intention to create shots either.

But even Garnett can create opportunities more than any non-Rose Bull, though not in a perimeter trap situation

Wouldn’t BG basically be the “Ray Allen” for Thibs? That’s all that’s really missing at this point. Running around screens and being that 3pt threat? I know. He’s not coming back but just sayin.

getting oj mayo

via trade (korver, taj, brewer for mayo and haddadi?) and then signing either shane battier or both tmac and grant hill would be a nice plan

scenerio 1:
rose
mayo
deng
boozer
noah

cj
bogans/butler
shane/butler
haddadi/battier
asik/haddadi

scenerio 2:
rose
mayo
deng
boozer
noah

cj
tmac
hill
haddadi
asik
(butler replaces the one who gets injured out of hill and tmac)

both scenerios are good i think. The second one works better for regular season, the first better for playoffs….

I've got to be honest with you

when your format posts like this, my eyes glaze over and I skip the post.

Maybe the problem is that you’re trying to fit too many ideas in one post, but i’d find it a lot easier to read if you just stated who you were trying to trade for and who you were giving up. Most of us are familiar enough with the lineup that you don’t need to spell everything out. I only mention it because I like most of your posts that I do read.

but at least on this blog, when regarding the bulls roster, runningman is probably right, everyone knows the roster, i dont have to spell it out for them like im on the espn comments section or something. But yea, when writing out other rosters or trickier trades ill probably do the pg/sg/c/sf/pf/ thing or something….thanks for the idea…

see thats why it hasnt happened yet: thats too much to give up but we only have small salaried guys outside the core.

with the new 150% trade rule it could become sligtly easier, but we still have to come up with like 7 million-ish. I wouldnt even trade korver and brewer, our only 3pt shooter and a great wing defender, together for iggy, a SF. I mean I’d give up that much value for him but look what your trade does to our roster for a guy who isnt even really a 2.

...and we're back

by paddyfairview on Dec 3, 2011 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

The only way I think Iggy makes sense for this team is if we move Deng for Ellis. Rose/Ellis/Iggs/Booz/Noah sounds like a fun unique lineup.

by metalkiwis on Dec 4, 2011 7:53 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, I'd prefer Mayo too.

Funny thing is, Bulls could’ve had him last year if they were willing to part with Taj. We wouldn’t have gotten to see that sick dunk on Wade, but we could’ve probably still lost the heat in five games without Taj’s services (starts muttering curse words to self after thinking abut that series again)

giving up far too much

If we are giving up all that, we better be getting Roy or Iguodala back.

by kpd on Dec 3, 2011 3:35 AM CST up reply actions

"2 of 3 Brewer/Korver/Watson and 1 of 2 Taj/Asik" WHAAA?!

Are we getting back Eric Gordon or Stephan Curry? Oh wait, we’d be getting back Aaron Afflalo, who would probably only be the fourth or fifth best player on this team. I think he’d be a great fit, but we cannot decimate our bench or size for him. We’d lose our backup PG, or maybe both of our backup SGs, the guy who backs up 2 injury prone starters, or a future defensive force. Obviously you have to give up something to get quality, but I’m not gonna overpay to get this guy. Holler at me when he makes some All-Star teams. Better yet, let’s revisit this when Afflalo makes the All-Star ballot.

no

do you really think you could get a Deng or Noah level player with Taj-Korver and watson?

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 4, 2011 12:20 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

my comment sounds more hostile than intended

i just think that will be the price. I believe Bulls fans overvalue our assets some time. I don’t believe Brewer, Korver and Watson have much value in the trade market. They are useful players on good contracts, but nothing that changes a team. So they are the contracts to make a deal work. From Denver’s perspective the trade is basically Afflalo for Taj and cap space. I suspect they would cut the other two guys they get at the end of the season. From the Bulls perspective, I believe the best trade is Watson, Korver and Taj for Affalo. Because Watson was a disappointment, Korver can’t play D and you have a few guys who can play the PF spot for a few minutes a game (Boozer, Noah, Deng, possible free agent).

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 4, 2011 9:59 AM CST up reply actions   2 recs

in that sense

you could probably replace Watson with Bogans and than Denver can cut him immediately to save money. I just think my dislike of Watson makes me want to throw him into trades.

by Basketball Smurf on Dec 4, 2011 10:03 AM CST up reply actions

im not sure how you dislike watson

but that is to say, im not sure how you like him either. To me hes sort of a neutral player, he didnt do anything that really made me like or appreciate him, but at the same time he didnt do anything negatively to make me feel like he should get the hell off this team. If he stays or if he goes, it doesnt affect anything for me and imho the team.

So i agree that throwing watson in trades is game, i just dont get how you can feel so strongly about disliking him….im not sure what he did to make u feel…well….anything about him

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

by piccolomair on Dec 4, 2011 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

i think he sucks on offense in the role Thibs played him in

he shot 37% from the field last year. I think if you look at the back up pgs on the other conference finalists (Maynor, Barea, Chalmers) he was the worst. The Bulls were desperate for another shot creator other than Rose and I thought he would deliver and he didn’t. Thonus seems to have more optimism for what he can do this year, but I wasn’t all that impressed. He seems like a player who needs to be given freedom to be effective and I don’t know if he will ever get that in Chicago. I thought he was one of the main reasons the 2nd unit was so bad offensively. So I dislike him for this team. It seems like an area where the Bulls can cheaply improve.

Why the hell are people clamoring for a role player so badly? Afflalo isn't our missing piece against Miami

We need at least a Luol Deng level player. Especially if you expect the Bulls to trade the packages people are proposing in this deal, which are very similar to the ones people suggested could get us Carmelo or Howard.

Damn. Afflalo is a good player, but he’s a role player. He’s a Brewer level player who has offense equivalent in level and value to Brewer’s defense. That’s all. Nothing more.

i'll start talking bout dwight

I like the fact nobody is talking about the Dwight to the bulls…
Last year there wasn’t really much talk about Lebron going to Miami. Bulls and Knicks were getting all the attention. Than out of nowhere, Miami signs all three of them.

Bulls are playing this one on the DOWN LOW…

There is a lot of subtle history that says Howard wants to join the Bulls. The least subtle of them is Howard’s comment on Rose and the Bulls at the end of last year’s season on national tv “What my PARTNER fast don’t lie D-Rose, I love the Bulls its not just one guy playing defense its a team effort”

I’d go as far to say, when he hands the Magic that list of teams, there will only be one team on it, the Bulls, and he’ll say if you can’t make that happen, then come back to me.
