UPDATED -- Mayo trade to Pacers 'close'
Hoopsworld is reporting the O.J. Mayo trade to the Pacers from the Grizzlies is done "close".
Memphis will receive Josh McRoberts and Brandon Rush. McRoberts became expendable with Indy's acquisition of David West.
The Bulls swept through the Central Division to earn homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs last season. Repeating that feat just could become much tougher.

I'm happy McBob is not in our conference anymore
not happy about the Pacers getting better

the pacers are going to be a damn good team
and on another note it sucks that the bulls didn’t make more of an effort because we obviously could have gotten him for taj and korver or something…
they still will suck at rebounding.

yes they will
so I’m confident we can take them somewhat easily. But don’t tell me that, Hill-Mayo-Granger-West-Hibbert. Isn’t a good starting 5.
by MartyMondays on Dec 12, 2011 12:51 PM CST up reply actions
Collison is their PG
But I agree that they are solid with some decent depth. It is going to be tough to match up against Mayo/Granger/West, each of whom has the potential to score 15-18 PPG.
I will never doubt the Chairman again.
yeah, theyll put up points, but give up alot of points on the other hand
b.c of offensive rebounds
yes but what we here have been complaining about is being good
and being good enough to win the title. The additions of West and Mayo makes it so at a minimum they should be getting into the 2nd Round. But are they good enough to beat the Bulls/Knicks/Heat/Celtics? Is spending 20 million on West to go up from 8th to 5th really worth it?
But, it is a good starting 5.

pacers made a good deal for very cheap
they lose pretty much nothing in this trade. Excellent deal for them.

Yeah, I think it's a great move by Indy,
but not so much by the Grizzlies. I think they could’ve made a better deal for Mayo last year, either with the Bulls or some other team.
this was the same trade that was rejected last year
for being filed too late, just past the deadline. except now this time they are also putting brandon rush in the deal.
Look

They did trade McRoberts for Mayo last year
but the deal was approved by/submitted to the league office by the trade deadline. So, in some ways, the Grizzlies succeeded by waiting it out with Indy and got Rush in return.
But, I still think they mismanaged Mayo while he was there and considerably lessened his trade value last year. If they were planning on jerking around his minutes behind Tony Allen, they should’ve dealt him prior to last season and would’ve gotten (I think) better value in return. So much of the writing was on the wall about Mayo’s future with the team, anyway, after they extended Conley and Gay in the summer/fall of 2010.
It could be a few things
After a pretty decent rookie season, he didn’t exactly make significant progress in his second season. So, there are reasonable questions about motivation, even though he is clearly a talented player.
There were also several reports about rumored conflict between Mayo and Gay, as well as Mayo and Lionel Hollins. Then, after the extensions to Conley and Gay, followed by the ‘scuffle’ with Tony Allen, I think it became clear the Grizzlies did not have Mayo in their long term plans. There was an incident of ‘accidental’ use of a performance enhancing drug sprinkled in there, too.
Guard logjam and salary concerns.
Henry might have more upside in the long run.

34-32 Formadible!
They are a fly on a horses ass tomthe Bulls
Umm...I dunno
I think best case scenario yes, they are, but you need to be able to rebound, or you better hit a high percentage of your shots so it doesn’t matter. The Pacers are better, but I dunno how much.

yeah they're not perfect
but i feel like they put up a better fight than Atlanta in the playoffs last year. They have a fresh year with a new coach and young talent with some solid veterans.
They just seem pretty well rounded

I keep forgetting the backstory with the Grizzlies owner and why he hates us.
I don’t think it’s a game changer per se, they are a tougher team and it takes a potential asset away from the Bulls, but if I remember correctly, didn’t GarPaxDorf make an offer last year and the Grizzlies owner said something along the lines of “I’ll never deal with Jerry Reinsdorf or the Bulls?”
"What do you think, I just dunked my whole career?" Jordan asked Henderson after making a 3.

I've never heard why

Actually, it's Bartman's fault.

they could have tried for mayo, easily
im guessing they dont want to part with asik? isnt that what they asked last yr…for asik?
no if I'm right the bulls didn't want to trade either
asik or taj..
which is stupid because taj for mayo is a no brainer
by MartyMondays on Dec 12, 2011 12:57 PM CST up reply actions
Especially for the Grizzlies.
"Did Michael Jordan join the Pistons when he couldn't beat them? No. He dug down deep and went out and kicked their fucking ass."
Of course.
People here think Mayo’s some kind of special player. He’s not. He’s a nobody in this league with terrible numbers. At best he’s proven he deserves to be a wing off the bench. I’ll take the defensive frontcourt depth over Mayo any day.
yeah when i said i would do taj for mayo
my coworker who’s a hawks fan was like… no. well. i think he overrates taj but the man had a point. after thinking about it was like well you might be right. it’s true that he really hasn’t shown enough. i think people like the idea of mayo more than what he actually is…

by Hindut Patrol on Feb 15, 2011 2:51 PM EST
Exactly.
Additionally, fans are so dead set on getting that “isolation scorer on the wing” that they’ll fall in love with a shitty isolation scorer on the wing, to the point that they’ll:
A)Give up a good, young big off the bench for him and
B)Trade for Mayo instead of just signing a better, more established and more successful player like Hamilton.
because Mayo has the potential
to create his own shot and hamilton does not

Hamilton has never had a problem getting his shot off
His USG is fine and his TS% is better than Mayo’s
I followed him a little in college
He seems like trouble, the Bulls have done a good job of getting guys with good character. This guy always ran around with his posse and seems to always find trouble payoffs in college, fighting with teammates, I’m surprised the Bulls were interested in him. He looked like the next MJ coming out of high school but so far has only shown to be a punk.
yeah it is
i would do that in a heartbeat. shit, oh well, i do hope iggy becomes available.

Who gives a shit?
Mayo isn’t much of a difference maker at all. I’ll reiterate what I posted yesterday, sub 15 career PER with an awful 12.6 mark last season. I hope Indy enjoys poor-man’s Larry Hughes, late career edition.
by dakoose on Dec 12, 2011 1:02 PM CST reply actions 2 recs
true, but hes a young player and would have looked nice as our 6th man
but ur right, hes not that impressive. Maybe thats why they didnt give up gibson
There are a lot of young players in the league with shitty stats.
They’re called busts. The Bulls are a team on the brink; I’d go with the proven, legitimate player in Hamilton over Mayo.
Then why....
yeah it is
i would do that in a heartbeat. shit, oh well, i do hope iggy becomes available.

i should reiterate
he was never my primary target b.c i thought the bulsl would have to give up too much for mayo. I was saying why not just use those players for a player liek iggy. Gibson for Mayo I would do it in a heart beat b/c this offseason b/c the bulls will have to decide to keep either gibson or asik (not both) due to luxury tax reasons. Obviously, I would rather have asik than gibson. However, throughout majority of the offseason I feel the bulls should go for a SG some live Iggy or Kevin Martin if t he opportunity presnets itself.
he's only 24
he would get better especially playing next to rose instead of mike conley
by MartyMondays on Dec 12, 2011 1:04 PM CST up reply actions 2 recs
i wanted him as our 6th man
and come off the bench to split time with hamilton.
Really?
He was the third or fourth option on that Memphis team and couldn’t produce.
the only reason he's interesting
is because he can create his own shot. it’s a gamble but worst case scenario you have a young not so efficient scorer, instead of a backup pf who you are going to lose anyway.
it could be worse
by MartyMondays on Dec 12, 2011 1:10 PM CST up reply actions
Really?
Why are you going to lose him anyway? If Boozer has another clunker of a season, whats to stop Jerry from Amnestying him and sliding Taj in there? What about using Taj in a trade for a player that’s actually productive?
That’s a helluva motto to run a team with:
It could be worse.
we have a cheap front office
taj is going to get bigger offers than we will match and you can book it.
by MartyMondays on Dec 12, 2011 2:00 PM CST up reply actions
you still have no answer
to Hamilton not being able to create his own shot by the way.
I like Hamilton but i don’t look past that.
by MartyMondays on Dec 12, 2011 2:02 PM CST up reply actions
He can create his own shot, btw.
He’s not great at it, but he has a quick first step and often pulls up for a mid range jumper after he gets one step by a guy. Furthermore, I’d rather have a better player who’s not as isolation-oriented than a lesser player who can get his own shot but isn’t gonna do much on the whole.
I thought the knock on Mayo
was that he turned out to be not as athletic as people thought he was going to be when he was in hs??
Maybe the problem is simply that he came out in the same draft as Rose and Westbrook…and he just looks unathletic when directly compared to those two guys. His ceiling may have been been downgraded from “potential superstar,” but he’s still a pretty good mid-pack guy. Kinda like Rip.
That is a knock on him, at least from me.
When I watch him, I don’t see the combine numbers manifest themselves in his play. It’s like Greg Olsen, who had a strong 40 time yet looks slow out on the field. Sometimes a guy’s athleticism doesn’t cross over into the game.
What’s a good mid-pack guy? Hamilton is and has been the far more productive player, and has been a big-time contributor on fantastic Pistons teams. Mayo hasn’t done that and even though he has time, I don’t think he ever will be the player that Hamilton was. If he works hard enough on his game, he can become the player Hamilton is now, maybe even be a little better.
Most guys who suck at age 24 continue to suck
There’s always the 1 guy out of 10 who’s a late-bloomer, but generally, dramatic improvement by a player in their mid-20s isn’t that common.
Pat Riley is the devil.

I agree
In no world is Mayo plus a minimum salary PF better than Hamilton and Taj combined, which is what the tradeoff would have been.

Michael Heisley's had his panties in a bunch about the Bulls since the Pau Gasol negotiations...
http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/feb/03/owner-feels-the-pain-over-deal-too/
Cleveland wanted to build an offer around Drew Gooden and Larry Hughes. Chicago tried to tempt the Grizzlies with Andres Nocioni and Tyrus Thomas. Portland mustered a package of Travis Outlaw and Raef LaFrentz.
“We were worried that the Lakers might do the deal with Chicago,” said Heisley, who had learned the Lakers were talking about sending Brown and Radmanovic to Chicago for Ben Wallace.
That would have taken Brown’s expiring contract off the table; the Grizzlies decided they had to act.
“Otherwise we’d be like Chicago is today,” Heisley said, “and gotten nothing done.”
“When Chicago broke up the Bulls, I was fuming for three days,” he said. “I get it. I understand. And the Bulls still aren’t back.”
But Orlando did OK by tearing things down and starting over; so did Toronto and Portland.
“I’m hoping to catch lightning in a bottle like Portland” Heisley said. “Look where they are now.”
However, Adrian Wojnarowski says that Joakim Noah was also on the table in the deal:
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-heisleygasol060308
One source with knowledge of the process said the Bulls had made the most credible offer. For Gasol and Memphis’ Hakim Warrick, the Bulls were willing to part with Andres Nocioni, Tyrus Thomas, Joakim Noah, Thabo Sefolosha, possibly Adrian Griffin and draft picks.
Of course, Heisley wouldn’t dare admit that Noah was involved in the deal, because then he WOULD look like a total clown.
So he was angry at the Bulls for breaking up the Championship club, and again for offering Noc and Tyrus and draft picks, at least, for Pau Gasol, when he ultimately accepted Kwame, Crittendon and picks. And he praised Portland, Toronto and Orlando for the way they (re)built their clubs.
Fast-forward to last season, when he still wouldn’t accept a trade offer that, on paper, sounds much better than Josh McRoberts and a first-rounder:
But according to multiple league sources, the Bulls aggressively pursued Grizzlies shooting guard O.J. Mayo, offering Ronnie Brewer, two first-round picks and one second-round pick.
Well, what goes around comes around. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the Bulls scored Nikola Mirotic and Jimmy Butler for the picks they offered Memphis. And if they can close the deal on Rip Hamilton, I’d call Rip, Mirotic, Butler and keeping Ronnie Brewer a much better haul than OJ Mayo or Josh McRoberts. Serves him right.

Heisley is right because he talks
and few owners talk in the league. Reinsdorf is a milford man.

They’re special backups, and special fill-ins for when the starter gets injured.
