UPDATED (again?!?) -- CP3 to the Clippers, for real?

[Like Yahoo!'s use of 'the NBA' instead of the Hornets. Deal is Gordon/Kaman/Aminu/Minny1st -yfbb]

[The deal's been accepted on both ends and Eric Bledsoe has substituted Eric Gordon in the deal. Gordon, Chris Paul, and Mo Williams is pretty interesting, esp. if they match the Warriors' offer sheet accepted by restricted free agent DeAndre Jordan.... Oh, wait, never mind. The deal is 'dead'. This is getting really annoying. --Alex Sonty]

Follow confirmed updates at the SBNation StoryStream.

There are conflicting reports as to the parties involved, most involve Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, and Minnesota's unprotected 2012 first rounder.

Chris Broussard (I know...) is insisting Eric Gordon's involved too. Others say no. That's kind of a big deal.

Either way, if you're the Hornets getting young and cheap is better than the vetoed trade, in my opinion.

RT @Chris_Broussard: Source insists LAC offering Gordon/Kaman/Aminu/Sota pick for CP3. LAC don’t want Gordon reported in case deal collapses

Why would NOH not want Gordon?

I suppose you could argue that Mirotic + charlotte pick + Brewer > Gordon, but he is a good young player to build around.

What's going on with Bledsoe?

Bledsoe seemed pretty good as a rook, and they’ll just kill his value if he’s CP3’s understudy….wonder if another trade may loom.

The kid's out of this world. He's got Allen Iverson speed, Jason Kidd's vision, Chauncey Billups' shooting ability and Michael Jordan's athleticism. How do you guard that? - Pacers coach Frank Vogel.

He doesn't have a position

He’s a guard, but another one of those impossible tweeners.

well one or the other.

I thought the deal wouldn’t get done without Gordon invovled but Paul should have his minutes limited to be fresh for the playoffs. Bledsoe would be perfect to keep Paul fresh. But if they keep Gordon and send Bledsoe, well that starting lineup is just nasty.

Paul/Gordon/Butler/Griffin/Jordan

I personally think the Clips intention with Jordan was to let the market dictate his salary, but the Clips could have very easily gotten into a bidding war with themselves over him.

Let us cavort like the Greeks of old! You know the ones I mean.

So if Paul becomes a Clip, which looks very likely now...

What are the odds of Dwight changing his mind and asking for a move to LA again? This is getting so ridiculous to the point where I don’t even want the Bulls to be involved anymore if it’s going to come down to stupid whiny shit like this…

Paul/Gordon/Butler/Griffin/Jordan…yikes…with healthy players, they are a rediculously good team…too bad VDN will screw things up

I don't know....I think they could actually play some solid defense

CP3 plays good on-ball defense, as long as Butler is healthy he’s not too shabby and Deandre Jordan is a really good shot-blocker.

If they go out and get a decent coach, they could really be troublesome.

by darksmokepuncher on Dec 12, 2011 11:36 AM CST up reply actions

True

Although Jordan and Griffin still have upside (read: athleticism) and could improve defensively.

you couldn't have a better band-aid for VDNs offensive ineptitude than

CP3.

His hands will be the new playbook, and Vinny can go back to telling them to try harder at defense.

Broussard and Stein

But the trade as presented has at least one stumbling block: The league, which owns the Hornets, wants the Clippers to add Eric Bledsoe to a package that already includes guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota’s unprotected 2012 first-round pick.

The deal would be done if the league hadn’t asked for Bledsoe, according to one source close to the process.

In that case

do this same thing in two years when he becomes a free agent. Three young lottery picks, plus Kaman’s salary relief, is a really good deal. Better than Odom / Martin / Scola in my opinion.

If it’s Bledsoe instead of Gordon, then not so great of a haul.

I will never doubt the Chairman again.

by nateroth on Dec 12, 2011 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

I agree completely with the concept entirely. They should definitely stash picks, especially since they don't have proper ownership right now

but then why not do that with Martin and Odom contracts while fielding a watchable team this year?

obviously it doesn’t matter now….I just don’t see this trade being better than what was previously offered to them. It seems to me that the veto was more about the Lakers saving too much money than anything else.

He’s probably being serious.

Sounders averaged about 38,500 per game – 654,431 for the regular season.

Tens of thousands more for other international and domestic competitions. I personally think they have enough people in the metro area to support a NBA team and a NHL team but there’s a decent argument either would have an uphill battle because the Sounders have so much of the region’s sports money currently invested in their organization.

Cleveland will never sign any all star free agent while Gilbert is there (at least for the next decade).

He’s a terrible businessman. He really has no clue how to manage people and I imagine we are only a few years away from the Cavs going to back to the league’s worst attendance. Good luck with that Danny Boy.

by rinconen on Dec 12, 2011 6:50 PM CST up reply actions

None, really

I mean, the league does own the team. There’s nothing stopping a team owner from vetoing a trade for all kinds of irrational reasons. If the league is allowed to own a team in the first place, they certainly are allowed to approve/veto personnel moves. They’ll have to take the consequences this summer, when Paul leaves as a free agent and the Hornets get nothing for him.

by Big D on Dec 12, 2011 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

There is an awful lot we don't know

What if the league has a Hornets buyer that knows Paul isn’t staying and wants a marquee player like Gordon and a lottery pick in the top 5 to draw a bid?

I don’t think Hornets/Rockets/Lakers deal was that bad, but because it’s the Lakers who will acquire players in free agency anyway and the fact that the Hornets are a ward of the league the commissioner made the right call. Youth explosion instead of aging veterans whose next contracts are a real question mark.

The Clippers needed this trade

They were looking at situations such as extending DeAndre Jordan, Eric Gordon, and then Blake Griffin. The Clippers lose a lot of their good players in free agency over the years. This one trade may shift that tide at the same time the Lakers appear to be on the decline. Not that that will last very long once the Lakers acquire Dwight Howard.
