this sudden surge to get a sf

makes me think that the bulls might trade brewer/korver (or both) for that sg, who is probably gonna be of smaller stature (oj, monta, ben gordon??). Otherwise i dont understand whats the point of adding more sfs who arent really great ball handlers,

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

by piccolomair on Nov 30, 2011 3:14 PM CST reply actions

Exactly

I was thinking the same exact thing. Why are they looking into all these small forwards if SG is a top priority?

by Option27 on Nov 30, 2011 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

It's like what's mentioned below

They didn’t lose the Miami series because of the depth of defense on the wings, so this really isn’t much of a priority

by Option27 on Nov 30, 2011 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

Just because Deng was healthy enough to play well at a very high level of minutes last season doesn’t mean the Bulls shouldn’t acquire insurance in case he cannot this season; moreover, it’d be nice to keep Deng fresh for the playoffs by way of having a back-up SF Thibodeau will actually play, especially in this frenetic, abbreviated season-to-come.

by jpx7 on Nov 30, 2011 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

One would have to assume

that they wouldn’t go this route unless they had a plan to address their primary needs too. They aren’t idiots, they can see the same things we see.

by runningman on Nov 30, 2011 5:28 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Obviously that's a great idea.

No: as runningman states below, acquiring Battier would obviously be component to a larger complex of transactions. I just think the idea is sound and justifiable in principle.

Also: are we entirely sure Battier earns the full MLE?

by jpx7 on Nov 30, 2011 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

That was sort of my thinking too.

I just don’t think most of the teams that could really use or would really want Battier can afford (or would want to afford) dropping $5 million per annum on him.

by jpx7 on Dec 1, 2011 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

Battier and Hill can both play the 2. More importantly maybe

they can both guard the 2. Not surprising to me that these names are popping up at all.

by Basketball Smurf on Nov 30, 2011 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

i get that they can both guard or play the 2

but so can brewer and korver (well at least play the two at some level) i think neither these sfs (including butler) nor our wings are the type of sg that the bulls need, which is the kind who can create his own shot. We didnt lose because brewers defense, or korvers 3 point scoring, but mainly because neither of them could create their own shot.

Our next sg needs to have 3 of these 4 capabilities
defense
Shoot the 3
handles
shot creating ability

also to elaborate on the last two, ben gordon for example is a guy who can create his own shot, however he is a pretty shoddy ball handler overall who constantly lost his dribble when not looking for his shot. Aaron afflalo is the opposite, he does okay just dribbling the ball, but he doesnt have many moves that allow him to score off the dribble nor the passing instincts to make plays for others. He could play backup point for the nuggets because he was decent at bringing the ball up the floor securely.

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

by piccolomair on Nov 30, 2011 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

i don't think these guys are the solution

it just doesn’t surprise me their names are coming up. They can play the 2 or the 3, they defend, they are good citizens and teammates, they won’t cost much money, they never complain about minutes or management – i’d go on but I’m scared Reinsdorf is on the verge of a psychic orgasm somewhere.

by Basketball Smurf on Nov 30, 2011 4:10 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

ha

i agree i like the names as well, its just imagining a team with brewer, korver, battier/hill….thats pretty crowded while addressing no real needs…doesnt make sense from a basketball point of view. someones gotta be traded

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

We need a back up for dang

Anyone of these guys can help out and hill guarded lababy real good last yr..Brewer is not going anywere i think.Id like bulls to sign Hill he can play alot of positions.

I really like the idea of signing Battier.

In large part because I really like the idea of not grinding Deng’s bones into dust.

I am a Battier fan

why not

u do realize he is literally a bigger kirk hinrich

just hinrich has the guard abilities of handles and quickness
and battier has the forwardabilities of close range shots and strength
kirk is 6’3 6’4 which is good height for a pg
battier is 6’7 6’8 which is good size for a sf
both play a defense that really doesnt require athleticism and utilizes what some call ‘veteran moves’, both arent overly athletic or explosive for their position, both dont get many steals or blocks.

The biggest difference, shane battier didnt have to share his position with another good sf, so he was just beloved…kirk was polarized

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

don't know the numbers

but i always thought battier was a better shooter 17ft and out.

bout time i see some quality names

batty can play the 3 or 4 and grant can play the 2 or 3…both play team ball and both have won in the playoffs. I like

i feel like whenever it's Heat vs anybody in terms of signing a free agent

the Heat will always get the player first. Wade/The Bron/Bosh/warm/hottest girls in the world/no income tax = by far the best situation for NBA players.

by kpd on Nov 30, 2011 3:58 PM CST reply actions

I don't know about that

some guys still value playing time and opportunities to contribute. Do Grant Hill and Shane Battier want to be minor bench guys for the Heat or do they want a chance at crunch time minutes for the Bulls? Grant Hill has had opportunities before to go hitch on to someone for a chance to win a championship – he stayed in Phx because he wanted to play.

by Basketball Smurf on Nov 30, 2011 4:05 PM CST up reply actions

right, it really comes down to brands i think

more established players who already have shoe deals and the like and just need a championship to cap off their career are gonna fly out to miami. Guys who are still brand building or looking to be THAT GUY are gonna come to chicago. Anyplayer who goes to miami will be considered as the guy who helped round out the heat. The guy who joins the bulls could be the guy who put the bulls over the top. If you are brand building you would rather be the latter.

maybe thats the reason

how long do you think deng’s body is going to hold up like that

Should've traded for Melo.

No

I think a trade is coming

There’s got to be a way we can wiggle into the Monta Ellis for Rudy Gay deal. And of course, I used our old pal, THE TRADE MACHINE, to mess around with a few things. Came out with this 3-WAY trade between MEM-CHI-GS.

MEM does this deal to get Monta, but also to grab a big man to back up Gasol in Biedrins.
GS does this deal to get Rudy, but also gets a defensive minded SG in Brewer to play alongside Curry, until the rookie is ready to step in. They then still have enough money to go out and get a Dalembert, Chandler, or DeAndre Jordan in FA.
CHI does it to get OJ. I guess we could throw in our 1st to one of the team as well

by Ceasaleo on Nov 30, 2011 6:49 PM CST reply actions

thats a terrible deal for memphis

rudy gay and oj mayo for monta and andris biedrins? of course, if anyone is dumb enough its memphis

...and we're back

by paddyfairview on Nov 30, 2011 9:50 PM CST up reply actions

Don't think it's as bad you may think

Other than not trading Gay for Monta to start with. But if they are going that route, which I doubt since the rumor seems more unlikely because it’s all coming from GS, adding Biedrins, while getting rid of OJ opens up money to resign Gasol and gives them a quality backup to Gasol at C as well. MEM would have a glut of SG’s if this trade were made, Ellis, Allen, Mayo, Henry, and Vasquez, plus where ever they plan to play Selby. Someone would have to go.

They were set to trade Mayo for McRoberts last year and Biedrins is better than McRoberts.

by Ceasaleo on Dec 1, 2011 12:22 AM CST up reply actions

i dont't buy it. the trade last year was for mcroberts AND a first round pick.

people see MEM’s situation as disadvantageous for Mayo, so his trade value is higher than his actual production dictates. Plus it’s probably only gotten higher in a thriftier market, since he’s a possible star on a cheap deal. I dont like him that much but, considering a monta-gay trade slightly favors GS anyway, I cant believe they’d ship him out for nothing more than Biedrins. They could get much more value doing separate deals.

...and we're back

by paddyfairview on Dec 1, 2011 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, as far as going after a lot of these sf, the only thing that matters is if they're versatile enough to defend the two

and out of all the names I’ve read, the only one that made me think twice was Caron Butler. Not sure how that one would work out.

Recovering...
