Because he makes 8 million

and they’re ready to give Teague his minutes. That assumes that crawford comes back, of course.

by runningman on Nov 26, 2011 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but for only one year.

If they’re worried about money, why not just amnesty Joe Johnson and the gazillion dollars they owe him over the next 6 years, or whatever it was?

Mike McGraw with a few tweets regarding this issue:

Chris Sheridan says new NBA deal includes amnesty clause, which could have huge ramifications for Bulls, Heat & other contenders.
McGrawDHBulls Mike McGraw
Consider players that could conceivably be set free: Joe Johnson, Rashard Lewis, Ben Gordon, Chris Kaman.
McGrawDHBulls Mike McGraw
Don’t think Bulls would use amnesty clause, but it will likely add to pool of free agents when players are let go

Wouldn't Detroit be more likely to amnesty Rip than BG?

News flash: Luol Deng is good...We now return you to your regularly scheduled hating...

by kingles on Nov 26, 2011 11:53 AM CST up reply actions

I would think BG

because of the years still left. They can probably trade Rip’s shorter contract. But until the details of the CBA are known, this is just a guess… (as many others will have.)

by kingj41 on Nov 26, 2011 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

I guess I just consider BG to be less overpaid.

I wonder if BG would play for the MLE on a contender…

News flash: Luol Deng is good...We now return you to your regularly scheduled hating...

by kingles on Nov 26, 2011 12:05 PM CST up reply actions

He might play for the minimum

Just because these guys might get cut under the amnesty provision doesn’t mean they’re not receiving that money from the contract. They still get paid by the former team. Any new contract is added to their ‘owed money.’

by kingj41 on Nov 26, 2011 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

That probably makes it more likely they'd amnesty Rip though.

Since if they drop BG they’d still be paying him to help some other team 3 years from now.

News flash: Luol Deng is good...We now return you to your regularly scheduled hating...

by kingles on Nov 26, 2011 1:27 PM CST up reply actions

That's kind of along the same lines as Kirk

I don’t understand why ANY team would use the amnesty clause on a player that only has a year left

Recovering...

by Juiceboxjerry on Nov 26, 2011 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

Seems that way to me

In addition to getting paid more per year, and being older, he hasn’t been happy for a while now. If you’re going to be rebuilding, Gordon has more use than Rip.

by runningman on Nov 26, 2011 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

it depends on what route they want to take

with Johnson, Smith, Horford they could still be competitive. You cut Hinrich and let Crawford go and you save yourself a ton of money while remaining a playoff team and hoping Teague blossoms. If they get rid of Johnson, they might fall out of playoff contention. If you are going to get rid of Johnson, no reason to keep Crawford.* You probably try to trade Smith and start over. So… they have a big decision. But anyway, I was just mostly bringing up Hinrich as a joke.

(I don’t see a scenario where the Hawks keep Crawford at all – I think one of the by products of this deal will be Crawford playing for the bobcats or twolves – someone with money to spend who won’t meet the salary requirements).

by Basketball Smurf on Nov 26, 2011 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

Johnson's a core player

Besides, they’d still have to pay him all that money, he simply wouldn’t count against the tax and possibly the cap. Atlanta never struck me as a team that would JJ 100 million while he played for someone else. Then, they’d still have to pay a different player in order to field a competitive team.

by runningman on Nov 26, 2011 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

Since Boozer is injured half the season anyway, will these games we missed be part of that injury exit, or do you think he’ll be missing half of this shortened season?

the Bulls have to keep up with the Heat on this amnesty clause

You know the Heat are going to be willing to spend money. They are going to target a legit center or pg (Chris Kaman / Baron Davis etc.) – the Bulls have to counter with a SG who can actually play. I even expect the Celtics to pick up somebody (Rashard Lewis/Vince Carter). I see a lot of frustrated Bulls fans in the near future.
