Bulls should chase Mayo again

Okay, this isn't breaking news...the Chicago Bulls like O.J. Mayo. They tried to get him last year only to get rebuffed when they wouldn't include Omer Asik in any deal. Well, Mayo is still a Grizz (for now) and he's still very available. If Gar Forman doesn't make a hard push for O.J., he'll be wasting Jerry Reinsdorf's money. I'm not the only one saying this: ESPN, Yahoo, BlogNBAsketball...they've all made this case. Korver/Brewer just won't cut it next year.

Man, if we can get Mayo...

for Taj + Brewer + picks, I would take it in a second. I would not give up Asik. Getting rid of Taj would create a vacuum behind Boozer, but this is probably a pretty good year for finding a workable backup PF. Hell, if we can hold onto Big Sexy, he would be pretty good backing up Booz (although I am pretty sure the Knicks are going to throw way too much money at him).

I still cannot believe that Memphis was going to trade Mayo for that goon McRoberts. Hopefully they are equally foolish in negotiating a trade with the Bulls. Hopefully there is a season…

when it comes to mayo i always get stuck on one position

brewer or korver? Im not sure which one is more valuable to our team as is. I like brewer, i like his defense, his ability in the transition, and his heady plays. Korver is clutch though, korver is the backbone of the bench mob offense. I also cant tell which one, korver or brewer, would play better with oj mayo.

I guess ultimately it comes down to what the griz would want, but still its that area where i get to pondering and find myself indecisive on who i would include.

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

I agree completely...

I think it would probably be whoever the Griz want more. I love Brewer…even though his entire offense centers around his defender forgetting about him so that he miraculously turns up directly under the basket, completely wide open (its remarkable how often this actually happens). I bet he probably has the most steals per minute in the NBA, although I have not seen this stat. You also need a guy like Korver around on every team. However, these are jobs filled by role players and should definitely be sacrificed to get a starting SG…

Hopefully the Griz would bite on this trade and do not hold out for Asik, who we should never give up. If we can get Mayo at this price, I think that this is that last piece we need to be a true championship contender.

its a tough call, but i say you give up Korver

A Mayo infused starting lineup would be able to build leads in the way that last years line up couldn’t, negating a tiny, tiny bit of what you need out of Korver off the bench.. I feel confident a B team of Watson/Brewer/Butler/Gibson/Asik would not only protect the lead, it would also create points off of turnovers. But it comes down to me thinking Brewer is a better overall player. Korver is a superior offensive player, but a liability on defense, where as Brewer is superior on defense and has acceptable, if mediocre, offense talents.

Also, did Brewers three point shooting improve, or was it a just a post season fluke? He shoot 22% during the regular season, but jumped to 43% in the playoffs, would this translate to maybe something like 30% next season?

he doesnt take that many 3s

so his percentages will obviously be dictated by that. Although i did feel he was far more assertive with taking and making shots. One thing i love about him on offense is that he rarely forces things. Also cj watson is fairly solid long range shooter as well, so maybe a brewer and watson backcourt wouldnt hurt. I think korver is still far far better than oj mayo, honestly i think oj mayo is about the same skill level as larry hughes and even playing style wise. Although i think while larry hughes was notorious for taking the dumbest shots, i think oj mayo is a bit more controlled.

A controlled Larry Hughes is OK

Larry Hughes was an all-star you know. :P The main problem he had was that he literally played as though he had the basketball IQ of a black hole

I remember that for a few years there

whenever I would play NBA 2kX against bad people I’d go into Larry Hughes mode and dribble the ball for 20 seconds before firing a contested fadeaway that missed the rim.
Sadly, somebody took the video of his knicks debut down

So is Kobe, whats your point?

Afflalo’s better and would require the Bulls give up more. Mayo’s obviously not the best player on the market, but he can be a cost-effective choice.

If not Mayo...

then who? With what assets? Maybe keep our starting lineup together and then take on JR Smith when he comes back from China midseason. However, there may be a bidding war from all of the near contenders in need of that extra umph (that is probably why he went there without an opt out). If the Bulls sign J-Rich, I will jump off a bridge. I really do not see any option other than Mayo.

by THEKILLERWHALE on Oct 20, 2011 11:58 AM CDT reply actions

i'm confident JR Smith would tank the JR interview

maybe midseason, Paxson or Thibs can tell JR, hey we need this guy, and trade for him. But if he is being signed as a free agent, and JR has him in an in depth interview, theres no way he greenlights a contract.

paxson?

if there was anything skiles and paxson shared, it was their ideas of what kind of players this team needed. Paxson would never, ever, vouch for jr smith. If anyones gonna want to bring him in, it would have to be gar.

?

ridiculous, if anything nothing, Gar and Pax and intertwined. Don’t you remember the executive of the year fiasco, where other orgs didn’t know who to nominate? I don’t think JR is going to be a bull simply because he isn’t high character.

It depends on what you need to give up

Bogans and Brewer are great defenders and Mayo is a better scorer, Mayo would score more than Bogans but he would also give up more points on defense. I’m fine with getting him if you can still keep Brewer for defensive reasons. There was a reason the Bulls didn’t get him for the stretch run, they probably wanted to much.

from what was reported

i believe the bulls offered brewer, a first, and a second. better than the mcroberts deal imo, but the grizz wanted a big man. sounds like they weren’t willing to part with taj. maybe they would be now, dunno. but i dunno really – memphis already had brewer and obviously didn’t like him enough to keep him…

To be fair, Tony Allen and Brewer are both very similar players.

But they’re both awesome too.

true, forgot about tony allen

all the more reason that they’re still going to continue to reject a trade involving brewer.

I would love OJ Mayo as a Bull, BUT..

It’s not going to happen, MEM will ask for too much.
A more likely scenario is signing a veteran upgrade and having that 2012 CHAR pick earmarked for a SG. Check the class coming out, much better than this year’s draft.

by Ceasaleo on Oct 20, 2011 6:07 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

He would be the best choice

but Richardson or Carter aren’t that bad either, we don’t need them to become prime time do it all scoring guards, just being able to take the pressure off D Rose a little will help plenty. I would also love the team to acquire Delonte West for depth if Korver and/or Brewer is traded. Yes, he has had his problems, but with the right people around him, his bipolar disorder can be kept under control. He would be a great backup at point when needed, an above average defender and he can also play the 2 well
