Bulls to send James Johnson to D-League
[From the FanShots. About time. I figured with the frontcourt injuries that JJ was still needed, but it's clear that Thibs simply doesn't trust him. -ed.]
Don't know whether this is a good idea or not. On the one hand, he does need more playing time, on the other, I wish it was against NBA players. I wish he was given more chances.

he's sitll on the roster
The Bulls still pay him, he isn’t losing the spot, just going somewhere else for a while.

nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
The ultimate fan experience is no longer courtside seats, it's Keith Bogan's job.
Wrong player being sent to the d-league
It should be Bogans
Well, I hope he magically gets better in the D-League
doesn't like Keith Bogans.
Wouldn't be the first time.
Or at least it seems that way. I can’t actually think of anyone off the top of my head who came back better, but I seem to remember it happening.
Shannon Brown?
Aaron Brooks?
They both did that.

Precursor to something?
Maybe the Bulls have an eye on someone being waived soon?

He should have been there a long time ago.
But, maybe he is a good practice player or something…hoping he gets some good PT and improves his decision making…
Until Tommy Del Thibo is taken out of your signature, it’s: Juiceboxbogans.
I agree.
If he had been down in the D-League all this time, maybe he’s ready to come up and help spell Deng some at this point.
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Yeah, but he might've been good enough to spell Deng already
How can we (or Thibs) know if he barely got a chance? I think his low pt has a lot more to do with Thibs than JJ’s ability. Seems to me like Thibs has a real problem with young players. He might be a good teacher, but he wants nothing to do with letting them cut their teeth on his watch.

Or..JJ just isn't very good.
I wouldn’t play him much either, he really hasn’t shown anything. The Bulls are 31-14, they don’t need an underdeveloped, raw prospect like him playing minutes right now.
Deng/Boozer/Noah: All your rebound are belong to us.
Not being very good doesn't mean you don't get to play on this team.
Hell, you can be outright terrible and still be a starter.

Or maybe the past few months being coached by Thibs and learning the schemes would have helped him more
It’s hard to know these things ahead of time.
Hopefully it's the best of both worlds
He uses and develops the skills that Thibs taught him in actual gameplay.

I’ve been waiting for bulls players to go to the Energy since Aaron Gray was on the Bulls. I’ll be at the Energy games.

Thank God
This needed to happen like 4 months ago, when it became obvious Thibs had no interest in playing him. It makes zero sense that this guy is getting no burn while Bogans is out there doing absolutely nothing. I would rather take a few hits here and there in a game to get JJ to learn and be able to make mistakes than have Bogans on the floor who will not improve and will not add anything of value except “not making mistakes.” I thought we played the game of ball to win, not to avoid mistakes. Silly me.

Good to see that he'll get playing time
I hope that they don’t Tyrus this up. I think JJ has shown that he can play. Not sure why Thibs won’t even let him on the floor.

Interesting
Source confirms AOL Fanhouse report about James Johnson’s expected D-League assignment; says JJ requested stint, expected to be 2 weeks

Good to hear, but basically, had JJ not stood up for himself, he would have still been rotting on the bench. WTF is this organization doing.

wow...
that’s kind of ridiculous.
I wish someone would ask them why they don’t like the D-League.

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
Because the last 2 plays they sent to play there, one got arrested for public nudity and the other was almost killed
on the court. I don’t think there were any videos, but I imagine it looked like this.
Good

"Where did you get this information and why should I listen to it?" - Stacey King
Poor JJ
I really feel bad for him, but I respect him for speaking up. Basically Thibs has no interest in developing young players. I bet that even the few first-half minutes that Omer (Mr. Defensive Rookie of the year) gets, is at the instance of GarPax. If Thibs had his way he’d be playing Noah/Thomas exclusively.
can't really blame him. Thibs has a lot to prove here
and a top 10 player on his roster. No time like the present to stake your reputation as a coach (the position he’s waited forever to land).

Sounds like an admission they're not going to play him, probably even after D-League, if he had to request it.

well
he needs to save his own career. the hope is that some other team will give him a chance and rescue him from what has become basketball hell from him, probably.

Lose weight, get a haircut, work on your game
get less burn than Keith Bogans.
ALRIGHT!
"What do you think, I just dunked my whole career?" Jordan asked Henderson after making a 3.
"You’ve got to miss eventually," Henderson told him.

the day we see him on another team playing against us
i hope he’s the one that shows us up (but we still win the game of course).
I've been dismissive of him, but for JJ to have to ask is kind of sad.
This isn’t on Thibs, this is GarPax showcasing yet again how noncommittal our front office is about everything. If the head coach clearly has no use for a player, it’s the GM’s job to discuss with the coach potential options. Especially since he’s a 1st round pick, not some 10-day contract hanger on. The Bulls apparently drafted him with the idea that he would develop into a quality player.
And the alternate version . . .
If the head coach clearly has no use too much use for a player (Bogans), it’s the GM’s job to discuss with the coach other potential options.
I'm not happy with the patterns we're beginning to see from Thibs
He appears to be pretty short sighted. Not playing young guys with talent, overplaying key starters, sticking with vets for no apparent reason etc.
Still like him a lot as a coach, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was concerned about some of these things
Until Keith Bogans is taken out of the starting lineup, it's: Tommy Del Thibo
by Juiceboxjerry on Jan 27, 2011 5:02 PM CST up reply actions 2 recs
I'm not seeing any pattern...
Except that he values defense above all else. It’s why he still plays Bogans, it’s why Luol never comes off the floor, and it’s why a guy who makes as many mental mistakes as JJ gets no floor time.
I wouldn’t necessarily agree with all of his moves, but if you take the time to look at his decisions, you see they’re not just coming out of nowhere.
That's hard to judge
The thing is JJ was running for league leader in TOpg. And if you think about it, this team really has trouble opening enough space in the scoreboard to give JJ some trash time. Other than the Philly game we don’t blow teams up and Thibs is not confortable with JJ turning it over because that means the starters will have no rest. I think if the Bulls didn’t have the 1 really bad quarter per game curse, Thibs would have burnt JJ more

It's just weird to me how
Thibs used him a bit more in the beginning of the season. There were atleast two games we won due to JJ playing. I think one was aganist Detroit and the other was the double overtime game at Phoneix. The Suns game espcially, since Deng was utter crap and JJ provided some big buckets at the end for us to catch up to the Suns. I really though after that, he’d have earned Thibs’ trust and get some kind of playing time.

Yes he had 2 good games
And Thibs continued to play him for a little while after those 2 games and he stunk it up. Terrible shots, dumb turnovers and defensive lapses. All evidence suggests the guy is not good enough to crack the rotation for a good team.
Pat Riley is the devil.
I worry about this too.
I get the impression that Thibs in an outstanding tactician, but a poor long-term strategist. While playing Omer or JJ more may not help in a particular game, the question is, would this be helpful over the course of the season? I’m afraid Thibs is too short-sighted to look at the bigger picture. After all, he played Noah 40 minutes in a preseason game against the Raptors.

I'm guessing they simply don't believe that players will improve more playing in the D-League as opposed staying with the team
And that’s not an unreasonable stance. I personally believe that most of a player’s development is done off the court in practice, inn the film room, etc., and going to the D-League means doing those things at a lower level with inferior coaching. JJ might get more playing time in the D-League but he’ll be playing against inferior talent, as opposed to playing NBA caliber players in practice.
Pat Riley is the devil.

This makes
the Iowa Energy kind of awesome.
Othyus Jeffers, JJ, Courtney Sims, Marqus Blakely and Curtis Stinson.
Not to mention Kyle Weaver when he gets healthy. That team could probably take Cleveland without much trouble.
