Why The Bulls Should Use This Year's 1st Round Pick for a Trade...
If any mixture of Bogans, JJ, and our 2011 first round pick can get this team a competent SG for the rest of the year, the org. better jump on it. I hear the voices, saying the pick is too valuable to give up for only a slight upgrade and rental player, and most times I would agree. The CBA uncertainty turns that argument on it's ear though. Whereas if this was an offseason like last year's where we could go in with about $4 mil of cap space to play around with, plus the short contracts of JJ, CJ, Korver, and Brewer, you could wait until around draft time and make a move. But since no one knows what going to happen deals like that to get cap space aren't going to be happening in my opinion.
Wait until closer to the deadline, when teams that aren't making it know they won't be making a push and pick up a rental. It may not get us a championship, but it could get us to the Eastern Conference Finals, and the added experience for our core would be priceless. Well worth the 1st round pick, especially if we can pick up a 2nd round pick in the exchange
Just in Case -- A peek at Class of '11 SG's
Harrison Barnes - not really showing much, probably staying, projected out of our reach anyway.
Josh Selby - too small at barely 6'2
Jordan Hamilton - description doesn't fit our style
Alec Burks - most interesting of the 1st round round prospects, but still not the shooter we would need
Bojan Bogdanovic - weak defender for Europe is all that needs to be said
Now look at the 2nd Round Prospects: (much better value and fits for the system)
David Lighty - one of my favorites to help fill that SG spot next year
Justin Holiday - This guy's profile sounds right down Thib's lane, defensive specialist with a budding stroke
Austin Freeman - I really like this guy, I just hope he can get his quickness up enough to guard pro SG's
Gilbert Brown - another one of those defensive guys, that has a solid stroke
Durrell Summers - don't understand why this guy isn't already a star, he always shows up tourney time
Remember, this was the 39th pick last year, and I bet we all wish he was starting here.

I don't think we can
Because we traded the rights to Seraphim (#17) last year int he Hinrich salary dump.
It's almost 2011 Bulls. Let's Get Grimy!!!
Bulls can trade this year's 1st.
Last year no longer matters. The past has no effect on the Stepien (sp?) Rule. It only looks at future picks.

I thought we can't trade 2 firsts in a row
Is that just in future trades (so we couldn’t trade our first this year to the Knicks, and then trade our first in 2012 to the Bobcats), but once we have this year’s draft we can trade next year’s 2012 to the bobcats?
It's almost 2011 Bulls. Let's Get Grimy!!!
Well we didn't trade our pick
We drafted Seraphim then traded him

Ah...so he became our asset for 20 seconds
I get it.
Tricky, but now that all makes sense why folks draft the player and then trade them….never thought of that.
Thanks.

You're right but also wrong
The Bulls can trade this year’s first, but only because, as elsewhere stated, they made a draft pick and then traded the player’s rights. If they had traded the pick itself last year, they would not be able to trade this year’s pick. A team cannot trade its first round pick in consecutive years, meaning that indeed, the past does count when considering the current season’s draft pick.
Well, isn't what LeBron did last night the living embodiment of The Secret, leaving millions on the table and turning himself into a hometown villain, all for the sake of winning?
Neil Paine, basketball-reference.com
Not true.
Once a draft has occurred, the rule no longer applies.
As of today, with no future 1st round picks owned by another team, the Bulls can trade a 2011 and 2013 pick, either to the same team or to different teams.
They cannot trade a 2011 and the 2012 pick. Even if the Bulls felt the Bobcats pick would become theirs to own in 2012, the cannot make a trade under that assumption. If it was a right to swap picks, it then could not be traded either because the Bulls would not have a 1st round pick for 2 consecutive years beyond this season.
If today were the draft, and the Bulls had selected a player with the intention of trading him, they could then trade the drafted player, their own 2012 pick, and a 2014 pick. They would only be without a draft pick for the individual 2012 season and the individual 2014 season, while guaranteeing they have their own 2013 1st round pick, thus not violating the rule.

Burks looks like a gifted SG with some length and athleticism to go with a knack for shooting..
but he’s been “the big dog” everywhere he’s been and it shows in his attitude and intensity when he doesn’t have the ball or is on D.

Plus I saw him against Oklahoma on ESPN3 and I was disapointed
Help defense wasn’t that great and was inefficient shooting.
I like him a lot.
There’s a possibility he’ll move up the draft standings if he keeps playing like he is, though. He’s already projected late lottery to mid-first. And he’s small for a 2.
So was BG
We need him to score. If we pick up our help defense then it would be able to somehwat balance it out
I wonder sometimes
I’d like to think he’d have continued with the same production in Chicago had he signed here – believe that it’s Detroit that ruined Ben, and nothing with Ben himself.
But he hasn’t been good since he left. Last year there was the injury, so it was easy to excuse the whole season as lingering injury issues. But this year he’s still not playing well – better than last year, but his PER is 12.96 (and Ben is one that PER is generally kind to.)
Plus, I don’t think it would be long before people once again complained about having a small 2 and wanting someone bigger.
I think it's because of Detroit
Here on the bulls he’d be taking shots/possessions from people who can’t really make their own shot, but on Det, there’re a bunch of chuckers, so he doesn’t get to shoot as much, even when he’s in a groove.
doesn't like Keith Bogans.
ugh. overrated, underathletic, questionable NBA skills
not down.

I don't hate the Idea, good player.
but 6’2?, I just wanna decent SG that 6’5 plus, is this too much to ask for.
Boom! Asik, Asik, Asik the room.
id take the chance on bojan

Why would a rival GM make that trade?
I think sometimes we forget that it isn’t the job of rival GM’s to help make out team better and typically you only see salary dump/ fire sale kind of moves at the demands of a cheap owner. So if I’m any GM in the league why would I make that trade? JJ is a project whose potential is still basically unknown because he never gets burn and Bogans doesn’t deserve to even be in the league other than a permanent bench/ practice player. So I agree that if we CAN make a trade happen for an upgrade at SG for the nothing that you listed. I’m just unsure of what GM who actually wants to keep their job would do it.
a SG with a half-decent jumper for a first rounder, a project, and a solid defender ain't THAT bad

EXACTLY!
They only have to deal with Bogans for the rest of the year. They have JJ, who with some burn, might be half decent. PLUS the 1st round pick

Thats over valuing the talent we have.
I’m I’m the GM of the Rockets, why would I trade Courtney Lee who started on a finals team, is a better man defender than what you are getting back, and a better scorer than what you are getting back, for a pick that COULD be something or it could be a bust, a player in JJ who you barely have any NBA film on because his own coach who see’s him everyday in practice doesn’t trust him enough to play in garbage time and Bogans who can barely stay in front of his man and while averaging 17min per game hasn’t made more than 2 field goals in a game since December and hasn’t scored in double figures since November. I’ll say that again, an NBA STATER playing 17 minutes per game hasn’t scored in double figures in 2.5 months and has played every game!
I’m not trying to be a dick, I would love for a trade to get Bogans off this team, but looking at it realistically I don’t see how a GM makes that move with out getting somebody who can contribute now unless they are looking to shed salary only.
I agree, maybe Bulls1st+Bogans+JJ+Scal for Pietrus+PHX's trade exception is the most we could hope for with that junk.
At the deadline, our best shot at real talent is dangling the Charlotte pick+Bogans for Lee or Afflalo.
if you're the GM of the Rockets
And by the trading deadline, your team isn’t looking like a playoff team. You’ll be unloading as much unneeded salary as possible. That’s the reason why you’ve heard the rumors about Brooks, Lee, Martin and Yao. One place where they have a surplus is SG. So if you can get a 1st round pick, that can be used trade bait down the road, and an athletic big SF, which they don’t have. That deal looks interesting.
Same thinking goes for any other team.

Weak class, especially at SG
Perry Jones is some prognosticator’s pick for #1 and the guy flat-out sucks. Barnes’ value is falling. The whole damn class is trending downward. I’ve seen some of Barnes, Selby, Hamilton & Burks and I think they’ll all be gone (not because they’re all that inspiring either, it’s just a very weak class.) I’m perfectly happy with the Bulls sitting this one out.

As a kansas fan
I would be thrilled if the Bulls got Selby, because, well, he was a Jayhawk. HOWEVER, I don’t think he is NBA ready right now, as he is way too streaky and his many defensive lapses. At times he chucks up everything, and though it does go in sometimes, he takes some REALLY bad shots. At other times, it looks as if he has no confidence at all. He hasn’t shown he can play consistently.

Marcus Jordan FTW!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if he is NBA ready yet
I do like him as a player though, and I wonder how it would feel for him to play for the Bulls
i think he'd love it
if his dad ingrained challenges in him, it as challenging as it gets

heheh that would be so ridiculous.
And Imagine if he became an elite NBA player lol
“Teams of the NBA…..How the fuck have you let us do this again. Have you learnt nothing?”
Craziest media situations, Bulls draft him and he becomes awesome and we win titles
or
MJ’s Bobcats draft him and he becomes a bust hehehehe
Boom! Asik, Asik, Asik the room.

Demetri McCamey?
He can handle the ball, hit the NBA three, and has good size for a backup PG/maybe some time at SG … you could do a lot worse than a player like him at the end of the first round.
He's also kind of stupid in how he plays
And is not athletic enough to take most college defenders off the dribble. I could see him as a 2nd round project, but I don’t think he’s a first rounder.
