Wednesday links/know your fanposts and fanshots: Injury updates, Rose praise, Omer praise, Noah at the mic
With the Bulls having a long break before taking on the Magic (in a so-not-'must'-anything game), it's the perfect opportunity to get away from the game-to-game grind. Look instead for some long-view, perspective, looks on the team and the franchise as a whole...but I'm both under the weather and uninspired. So you instead get a look around the BaB sidebar (and wherever they may direct you) at some Bulls happenings this week:
- Injury notes: Rose sat out practice today with the ol' "flu-like symptoms" . Meanwhile, James Johnson was back at practice from a knee injury nobody cared about. And Noah has the pin removed from his hand...which is a step, though with injury updates I prefer giving me a target return date or forget it.
- I'm trying my best not to wade (not Dwyane) into the Rose-for-MVP waters just yet because 1) it's early, and 2) As of now I don't think he deserves the award, so it'd be disingenuous to 'root' for it even as a Bulls fan, but TrueHoop had their opinion published today bolstered by this fine compilation over at By the Horns that links for and against views on Rose winning the league's top award.
- On to much more important awards, ESPN.com's David Thorpe has his midseason awards for the rookie class, and Omer Asik designated that group's best defender.
- In case you missed it, Joakim Noah joined the Bulls telecast on Monday night. Getting behind Stacy King's 'big sexy' call is the unquestioned highlight, but if you want the full thing, CSNChicago has it.
- Speaking of Kurt 'Big Sexy' Thomas, Carlos Boozer is not comfortable with the nickname. I feel his pain, I'm similarly not comfortable with any of Neil Funk's work.

Abbot's a douche
One of the most annoying blogger/commentators out there. Listening to him on ESPN’s NBA podcast was painful.
lol @ Booz
he just doesn’t want to call anybody sexy after the last person he called sexy to ended up on a TV show. You know, cant have Kurt all on TV during our season

These "stats" guys kill me with their M.V.P. analysis.
The award has never been about the statistically most superior player in the league…in my opinion, it has always been a combo of popularity contest and how has the player improved/carried his team…and yet, somehow Steve Nash has still has two..?
Until Tommy Del Thibo is taken out of your signature, it’s: Juiceboxbogans.
does he deserve two?
"What do you think, I just dunked my whole career?" Jordan asked Henderson after making a 3.
"You’ve got to miss eventually," Henderson told him.
"That’s what Cleveland said," replied Jordan
Nash doesn't even deserve one...
He is the worst M.V.P. in the history of the league…I mean, Karl Malone didnt deserve his, but he was damn good in all phases of the game.
Until Tommy Del Thibo is taken out of your signature, it’s: Juiceboxbogans.
What a load of crock
Offensively Nash was so far more dominant that his D wasnt a factor.
His teams won 60 plus games, while he accounted for 40 pts every night.

The Suns didn't win 60 games in 2005-2006.
His first MVP is the problem:
2004-2005: 15.5 ppg, 11.5 assists, 3.3 rbs, 1.0 steals, 3.3 to’s, 50.2% shooting, 43.1% from 3, and 88.7% from the free-throw line.
Good numbers but not MVP #‘s in my book. I don’t care how many wins his team had.
There is no doubt in my mind that he won the 2nd one because his stats improved from the previous year (when he won). The Suns won their division but had the 3rd best record in the conference.
"It feels the same. A win is a win no matter how my stats are. I was not aware at all I was that close. I was too caught up in the game. They made their run and they hit four or five straight shots and my concern was stopping their shots and I guess that led to a triple-double." - Derrick Rose.
Yup
If the MVP award was simply the best player for that year, then Rose is definitely not the MVP, and probably won’t have a shot for a couple years. BUT, when you look at certain factors that have been used to determine MVP candidates in the past (i.e. team success, value to team, quality of teammates, star power, numbers), it’s hard to dispute that Rose is one of, if not the the most qualified players at this point of the season.
I mean, let’s just say that voters will not go for Lebron or Wade, which I think is very likely, who is a better choice than Rose right now? Durant, Nowitzki and Howard are the only names I could come up with, and they’re certainly not having much better years than Derrick, if at all. In the end, this comes down to how badly voters wanna screw Wade and Lebron for playing together. And I wish these stat assholes would acknowledge that, instead of trying to just put Derrick’s season down.
Until Keith Bogans is taken out of the starting lineup, it's: Tommy Del Thibo

If New Orleans finishes third in the West,
I could see Chris Paul getting it. His scoring is down and that hurts him, but low expectations for his team and the lack of any comparable star on the team help him.
Durant and Nowitzki will be hurt if their teams don’t finish with 60 wins, but Orlando does have a realistic chance at 60 wins and so I see Howard as the favorite, especially since his scoring is up.

maybe they want better voting for the MVP?
and Nash winning helps your (poor) point, he carried and improved that Suns team and was popular.

Doubtful.
As it does not appear they are considering the past statistical correlations of winners. I get the feeling they want the award to be given to the player with the best statistical season.
As you noted, Nash winning supports my position…

So no one should ever complain about how paid journalists award the best players of the game? Even when their methods are stupid?

AND ONE!!!!!! YOU MUTHAFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT REF!!!! AND ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Abbot got ripped to shreds for his post yesterday. I can see if he doesn’t think Rose deserves MVP, but what his reasons were beyond stupid. Such as STILL calling Rose a bad defender when the numbers would prove otherwise.

my mvp analysis
The reason Rose is in the MVP discussion is because their is no clear cut candidate. This is exactly like the first year Nash won it or when Kidd came in 2nd. You have a popular player from a popular team exceeding expectations in a year where people don’t want to give the award to the guy who has won 2 straight MVPs but than pissed everyone off.
the Candidates
Dwight Howard
Pros: best defensive player in the game; much improved offensive game; cleary the best and most important player on his team; best player at his position by far; never has won the award before
Cons: game isn’t sexy; Orlando has probably underperformed to what everyone thought they’d be coming into the season; there is a bias against centers i believe, that makes it so you have to be absolutely dominant to get consideration for this award. He isn’ dominant
Rose
Pros: Has made the leap; clear best player on a team taking a noticeable jump; very good numbers and improvements across the board; plays in a huge basketball friendly media market; the anti-Lebron
Cons: 3rd year player; doesn’t have the same efficiency as other top guys; simply not someone you can argue – “that guy is the best player in the league”
Durant
Pros: the original anti-Lebron; the original humble-bot; great scoring numbers
Cons: Westbrook stealing some of his thunder (pun intended); hasn’t made the leap people expected; game isn’t very flashy or exciting
Lebron
Pros: Best player in the league having another great season; the contrarian/push-back pick
Cons: two time MVP; hated; yeah Cleveland has fallen apart without him, but Miami hasn’t been quite what people expected
Wade
Pros: playing the sort of Kobe role to Lebron’s Shaq; takes the big shots; fabulous numbers; never has won the award before despite being one of the top 5 players in the league for quite awhile
Cons: hate shrapnel from Lebron; not best player on team; numbers just a smidgen below Lebron’s
Chris Paul
Pros: never has won the award; an efficiency lovers wet dream; New Orleans has outperformed expectations;
Cons: played better the previous 2 years; New Orleans is probably has the lowest profile of any good team in the NBA
Dirk
Pros: having a fantastic year; Dallas fell apart without him
Cons: he already won the award – when you think of this generation players – do you think of two time MVP Dirk Nowitki?; dallas hasn’t exactly looked great upon his return.
Kobe
Pros: Lakers are once again one of the top teams and once again he is the driving force; no clear cut candidate leaves the door open for a “lifetime achievement award” pick, Kobe fits the bill. Does it make sense for Nash to have 2 and Kobe to have 1 MVP when he has been arguably the most dominant and successful b-ball player over the last decade?
Cons: He has played better in prior years; he has a great set of teammates who at the start of the year were getting the lion share of credit; surprisingly, the Lakers are almost under the radar with all the attention being paid to the East and young guys.
If I were to pick out my top 5 candidates I would say
1. Lebron
2. Rose
3. Paul
4. Kobe
5. Dirk
In a year with this much up in the air and so many guys having great but not HOF type years, I’d go with the guy who is clearly the best player. However, generally you give it to the best player on the best team and since I don’t see any viable candidates on the Spurs or Celtics I think this is a year where Kobe could steal the award. My guess at the final voting would be
1. Kobe
2. Rose
3. Lebron
4. Dirk
5. Paul
Its an interesting year. Rose has a very viable case. I hope he wins it; nothing wrong with a little love. The naysayers would just motivate him. But I think all it will take is one well timed article by Adande (which I’m sure he and Kobe are crafting now) followed up by a Hollinger article saying Kobe is having his best season in 4 years, to get sentiment on his side. If LA gets to 1st in the West, he could win it by a landslide.
by Basketball Smurf on Jan 27, 2011 12:02 PM CST reply actions 4 recs
The Adande and Hollinger points you make at the end of that are paramount to Kobe (or anyone that gets both of those guys on their side) winning the award
I honestly have no problem with basically any of those guys winning it, so long as they all stay healthy and consistent.
why can't Neil pick on Bogans for once?
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jan 27, 2011 2:41 PM CST up reply actions
Do you think the writers who vote on this award are actually swayed by Adande or, especially, Hollinger?
If the Lakers make a late push to overtake the Spurs for top seed in the West, I could see Kobe stealing the award. However, it’s going to have to be newspaper writers pushing that story, not espn.com writers.
Well, isn't what LeBron did last night the living embodiment of The Secret, leaving millions on the table and turning himself into a hometown villain, all for the sake of winning?
Neil Paine, basketball-reference.com
I disagree in part
I think ESPN is very influential in shaping the MVP debate, especially since they’ve gotten in the basketball business and I think Hollinger in particular has been influential in getting people to focus on stats in these debates. Adande, not so much, but I used him as an example because he is based in LA (and I think also works for the LA Times). ESPN is essentially the source point for all these beat writers – ESPN is where they want to be. I think they follow the storylines put out by ESPN. They shape the dialogue.
I don’t think having ESPN behind a particular player, in of itself, is enough to make that player MVP. But they kind of decide who the viable candidates are and everyone kind of follows suit.
by Basketball Smurf on Jan 27, 2011 3:49 PM CST up reply actions
You forgot a con about Paul
While he is ultra efficient, he isn’t doing enough for his team. He doesn’t take enough shots and he doesn’t take over games as much as he should.
New Orleans would be better served if he would try to do more, even if it hurt his efficiency.
Would they really be better served?
Seems like distributing and going the efficient route has done his team pretty well through hake a season. We know that. Not sure how he could do MORE for that team by changing his approach now.
he's creating less efficient shots than if took more
So yeah, I think they would be better with Paul shooting instead of Jarret jack or Trever ariza

Instead of passing to his awful, awful teammates, he should shoot more or draw more fouls.
He’s carried that burden with success before.

Here's a Rose analysis that Henry Abbott linked to today.
In reading about whether Rose is “worthy” enough to be an All-Star starter, I came across this statement. I had to read this about four times to make sure it says what I think it says.
The only real issue is that the three guards in front of him currently; Wade, Rondo and Fields are much better guards.
Do you think the Knicks would give the Bulls Landry Fields for Rose?
I wouldn't trade Rose for any of those three players
why can't Neil pick on Bogans for once?
by Rose Colored Goggles on Jan 27, 2011 2:36 PM CST up reply actions
Maybe, but Wade is probably better
I still wouldn’t trade for him because his injury history is scary.
Listen
when you have a chance to trade for a guy averaging 10 pts and 7 reb in 31 minutes a game, you just do it, I don’t care what the costs. I mean of course Landry would be an efficient if he was the 1st option, 2nd or even 3rd option on his team. And of course he would still grab 7 rebounds a game even if he wasn’t playing with the weakest rebouding front line in the league.
The real question is where Landry Fields fits in the MVP conversation.

I'm kind of over the Rose All-star/MVP talk..
He’s helping the team win and elevating everyone around him, and I care about a million percent more about what happens in the playoffs than I do about all that other stuff. And so does Rose, thank goodness.
