A few things

1) Unless it’s for a star or someone like Mayo, I do NOT want the Bulls taking on any long salaries in return. They’ve strategically placed themselves in a position make big changes in the near future if this whole thing doesn’t work out with the current roster. I highly doubt Casspi elevates us to that next level. Huge gamble.

2) I always thought of him as a SF so I don’t think it’s a natural slide to SG.

3) Is it weird to say that I’m still not fully convinced he’s a legit long range threat and capable defender?

The Bulls, in particular, like Casspi not only for his ability to shoot but also his experience in pressure situations after playing at the highest levels of the Euroleague with Maccabi Tel-Aviv as well as his defensive potential, believing that the energetic swingman would develop nicely on D under the guidance of Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau. The bonus: Casspi is shooting 40 percent from 3-point range this season – up from 36.9 percent as a rookie – to further squelch his pre-draft rep as a non-shooter.

Yet there are obstacles for interested parties. Casspi is also a favorite of Kings co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof. Sources say Sacramento, furthermore, would likely insist on attaching a long-term contract from the Kings’ roster (such as Francisco Garcia’s) for the right to acquire Casspi, who’s earning a bargain $1.25 million this season. That could dissuade both the Bulls and the Knicks, with New York especially mindful of preserving salary-cap space for the summer.

It’s likewise true, from the Bulls’ perspective, that Casspi would give them another shooter but can’t really be classified as a shooting guard, which is the position Chicago has been openly looking to upgrade with Ronnie Brewer and Keith Bogans as its current primary options.

by Option27 on Jan 2, 2011 2:54 PM CST reply actions

I actually think if we got Garcia too that could really help

Depending on what we give up that is. His contract blows I suppose because of the length, but Garcia should be playing mor eminutes—though he’s behind Evans for good measure—even if this year Evans is mostly playing like shit.

The Bulls already have Brewer Korver and Watson on 3 year deals

Garcia’s 3 year seems like it would fit in with what the Bulls are already doing.

I remember once former Bull Dave Corzine staring at a stat sheet after a loss when he had one rebound and Michael Jordan offering, "One more rebound than a dead man."

It's just a lot of money

It’s Korver Money, where Brewer and Watson are far cheaper, and while Garcia is decent, he’s not as good as Korver (who spaces the floor really well—though Garcia’s not a bad shooter I guess….).

Casspi makes peanuts.

If we could trade Bogans and a first round draft pick for him, it probably would be a pretty good trade.

First off, he's averaging 8.7 ppg (as if that meant something)

And yes he can. Keith Bogans is completely worthless to a rebuilding team, so you’re essentially trading a late 1st round pick for Casspi. The Bulls are getting the better end of that deal by a huge margin.

Where there's smoke, there's fire.

I believe that the Bulls probably aren’t aggressively pursuing a SG because that would just fit with their seeming past: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Even if it could be made better.

However, I think it’s pretty obvious that they are looking to upgrade the position. As has been said, they should at least make the obvious upgrade from within the organization first.

this actually makes sense

he’s on a rookie deal and he can hit the three and is tall. this guy fared really well last year in the HORSE competition against rondo and durant (i was watching from the front row). only question I have is, how’s his defense? I don’t want another Korver. steals don’t seem to be eye popping.

his numbers seem to be slightly down this year but i’m going to guess that’s a product of sacramento being worse this year, and cousins taking the center, shifting thompson to the 4 (and landry to the 3, and thus casspi to the bench).

um, that’s why they shoot free throws flat-footed. And why tall guys don’t jump; they don’t need to.

What?

Ever shoot a free throw? Everyone puts their weight on the balls of their feet, its never a flat foot; even distribution through the arch.

Tall guys don’t jump? Dirk jumps on every jump shot he takes, and its not for separation between him and his defender

by regui8er on Jan 3, 2011 1:03 PM CST up reply actions

Okay, if you're defining flat-footed as literally flat-footed, then I doubt even Rondo shot flat-footed.

I didn’t think that’s how the DDS was saying it, though. And, yes, I guess if you define “jumping” as getting two inches off the ground, again, you’re right about Dirk.

The kings defensive woes have a lot to do with their terrible coaching

I absolutely believe Garcia and Casspi would be much more effective defenders on the bulls under Thibodeau. Even though Garcia and Casspi aren’t quite as good as korver at shooting the ball, they’re still pretty damn good and they’re better than him at other things (ballhandling for Garcia and getting attempts at the rim for casspi). At worst, Garcia and Casspi are of comparable quality to Korver, so you’re hedging your bets by trading 1 for 2. Imagine how hampered our offense would be if korver went down. Having one more long-range threat around is absolutely a very good thing for us. Also, casspi’s young and has a lot more potential than korver. He might be by far the beat player in this deal two years from now.

Pat Riley is the devil.

by Poloplaya14 on Jan 2, 2011 5:06 PM CST up reply actions

korver has established himself as a player whose teams play better when he is on

the court, as raw +/- attests. casspi hasnt established anything yet because hes too young, but garcia’s teams have consistently done better when garcia is on the bench. even if there are 2 of them, i am not remotely interested in these guys.

Over the past 3 years, Carlos Boozer put up raw +/- scores of -2.2, -5.9, and +1.1, respectively.

If he was an all-star level player, he’d be better than that, right? Well, he’s putting up a +7.4 this year and he’s been unquestionably outstanding for the Bulls. His negative numbers in Utah most likely had a lot to do with the fact that his backup, Millsap, was an excellent player too. The fact that he had to play C a lot also probably hurt his production.

That’s just one example of extraneous factors having a pretty large impact on a player’s raw +/- numbers. I haven’t been paying attention to Sacramento enough to know whether anything’s been going that could drag down Garcia’s raw +/-, but I’m not going to completely write him off as a player considering that his box score stats indicate that he’s pretty solid.

No need to forgive you or for you to ask for forgiveness.

Because an organization does not think like a fan. We’re making a far bigger deal of the 2 guard situation than they are, that’s for sure. They are in no hurry to pull the trigger on any deals (realistic or phantom.) Moreso, Omri is a good shooter, 6’9, young and surprisingly athletic. If Chicago could get him and dump a Bogans (or JJ) or someone at the same time, how would this not help? This essentially removes Bogans from the rotation (inserting Brewer at the 2) and strengthens the rotation as a whole. Thinking simply "We must upgrade the 2!" is folly fan talk.

besides hitting two big threes in the last minute

casspi closed out on pietrus’ last attempted three (missed it, badly). pietrus has been listed as the starting two for the suns recently when carter was out. and i don’t know that he isn’t as quick as carter currently, or that casspi moves laterally any less effectively than garcia does. (pietrus had a terrible shooting game, while carter had a typical one, btw.)

a lot of teams match up like this, and it would only have been a problem for sac if the suns had used dragic then instead, in which case neither would’ve been a good match.

basically, i don’t see a problem, other than paying a guy who i wouldn’t start over brewer and who isn’t getting any better (29 yr old garcia) $5.8m for three years.

Pietrus isn't a great ball-handler*, so having the lateral quickness to stay in front of him isn't as important.

And, obviously, being tall helps in closing out, but not as much in staying in front of guy. Obviously, his wingspan helps some, and I think he’s serviceable on defense as a SG, but I, as i said, from what I’ve seen (the one game against Phoenix notwithstanding), I don’t feel like he’s a good enough defender at SG to a 30-35 minute starter.

*which is part of the reason he’s spent most of his career at SF instead of SG.

I don't really like either of those guys either.

I think Jackson is overrated on offense and yes, his offense being supposedly “really good” overshadows his poor defense.

And no, I didn’t know that was an illustrative examples. You made no indication of that by any means. You’re also a Phoenix fan and seem to make a lot of observations off of single games. If you wanted to use it as an illustrated example, you might have included some argument about the larger whole, either using statistics based over a lot larger sample or at least something like, “and that’s what I’ve seen out of him many times before.”

We would have to give them more than just Deng of course

Maybe we offer Martin + Jared Jeffries for Deng + Korver + Asik. The Rockets get younger and in Asik, they get a big man capable of anchoring the middle, which is their biggest need. The Rockets have Lee and Williams as potential future SGs, so maybe they say yes to that. Maybe not, but I don’t think it’s out of the question.

Totally disagree with you

The difference in Martin and Deng’s offensive game is way bigger than the difference between Martin and Deng’s defensive ability. (With Martin better on offense and Deng better on defense)

I would take Martin over Deng any day of the week, especially considering how well Martin is playing this season.

by Illini15 on Jan 2, 2011 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

There would definitely be dropoff

But we’d hardly end up being terrible on defense. We have the number 2 defense in the league. You’re essentially interchanging Deng for Martin and Casspi for Bogans. Is our defense really going to take that big of a hit? I think we could still be a top 10 defense when Noah gets back. And we’d have the potential to be the best offensive team in the league. Right now the San Antonio Spurs are the best offensive team in the league, and if you ask me, Rose-Martin-Boozer is just a better version of Parker-Ginobili Duncan, offensively.

jason richardson

is not a defensive player, not a consistent scorer, has only made 40% threes twice in 9 yrs (37% career, and he won’t do it this year in orlando, i guarantee), isn’t as clutch as you’d think based on last year’s great post season (when teams defended amare with everything they had and let richardson go), and he’s turning 30 in a couple weeks. plus, he’ll command a pretty penny, being at $14mil per right now. stay away.

i always wanted the suns to acquire him, and when they finally did, i enjoyed the watching. (the playoffs were great, even if he did allow the crucial artest tip in game 5.)

I don’t want a promising up and coming young team.
but you really don’t want to devote $$$ necessary to a 30 yr old jrich.

casspi, afflalo, mayo, these are the kind of guys that will do more towards gaining a championship, for less $$$ and for a longer “window” of time.

This seems like a stealth call for Fran Garcia. He's the SG that gets mentioned

Which I don’t totally oppose. I’d still aim higher, but if we’re coming down to the deadline and absolutely feel like we’ve gotta pull the trigger on something, suppose we did something like CJ+JJ for Garcia+ Casspi?

I tend to think we’d be getting two solid, though not spectacular players that would help us. I’m actually not sure where Casspi would play very much, though I think they both bring nice shooting to the table.

Still, what is Casspi going to do that Korver doesn’t do? Would the goal be to trade Brewer away?

Just for the hell of it, my ideal Bulls/Kings trade would be
Garcia, Casspi, and Carl Landry to the Bulls for JJ, CJ, Bogans and Scal

Landry would be a really nice piece to backup Boozer with. He’s a similar sort of player, though obviously not as good, and we’d then have a second team that could really come in and overwhelm people.

Still need a backup PG, but that could be handled in other ways. I definitely like the prospect of adding two good shooters and a frontcourt scorer.

1- Rose
2- Garcia, Brewer
3- Deng, Korver, Casspi
4- Boozer, Landry
5- Noah, Taj, KT, Asik

Does that seem like a grossly unfair asking price? The Kings are going nowhere, and if they really want to be out from under Garcia’s long-term deal, then giving up Casspi seems reasonable, I guess. And Landry is leaving anyway. I think adding one of our picks would certainly get it done.

Truth be told, I’m not sure that Casspi adds much to the deal. When I think about the prospects for this year and next, what Landry and Garcia bring to the table would pretty obviously help.

Why is it a bad thing to have both Taj and Landry?

You can never have enough bigs who can play.

I do see that losing CJ is a bit of a problem, but it’s not like he’s rocking our world very much.

After looking at the Kings though, I’m not sure why they’d really want to make any sort of deal like this. They should probably try to unload Landry since he doesn’t seem likely to fit in their plans, but their main issues seem to be injury and youth. If they get Cousins’ head screwed on right and Tyreke Evans’ foot working, they’ve got a nice looking team.

true, but i wanna see asik on the court, developing
You can never have enough bigs who can play.

while taj, landry and dirty kurt don’t have the problem personalities in dealing with limited minutes, they will all play better the more they get. so if everyone’s healthy, you’ve traded for less effective/efficient 4s and 5s, if the rotation grows. and asik is 11th man. landry, a piss-poor defender like booz, takes minutes from taj/asik, paint defenders.

the team would be dead if rose is hurt, but that’s true now anyways.

i grinned big at this trade though, sports. i love trades that rape the other team (a great way to get better, let’s be honest!) and i always hate your trades for raping the bulls (however gently). well done!

by marionette on Jan 3, 2011 2:56 PM CST up reply actions

With Noah out a while and Boozer historically hurt prone, I'll take the depth and worry about it later

My main consideration is balancing things headed into the playoffs. All you say is true, but I think
1. We’re really going to need to conserve KT. When we hit playoff time, he needs to have something left in the tank. Before then, I don’t think he will really care too much if he doesn’t play that much.
2. When we hit playoff time, I’m not going to trust Asik to do anything, and honestly, I don’t want to have to be in any position to rely on him now.
3. Landry brings something none of those guys, except Boozer bring. I like the balance of having a poor-man’s Boozer sort of guy to plug in behind him, and then a poor-man’s Noah (Taj/KT) to fill in behind him. That’ll let us continue to play the same style in most any contingency.

I always assume most trades are pretty one-sided (at least from a talent perspective). If it’s an even trade talent wise, why would the teams trade? Usually, it’s talent being traded for flexibility, or current talent vs. future talent. Or somesuch.

Could this just be a plan of his to force management to upgrade the 2 guard position?

As long as Thibs keeps starting Bogans (worst starter in the league), the org will feel pressure to give him a suitable starting SG rather than just sit on what they have.

Big article today in the SacBee about Garcia

Link
It’s a tad flufftastic, but…

They don’t even know what to call Francisco García anymore. Older brother. Resident shrink. Head cheerleader. The man who sticks their faces in the mirror. The after-hours coach who prods them away from the pubs and into the Kings’ practice facility, sometimes into the wee hours.
“Cisco, man, we would be lost without Cisco,” second-year forward Omri Casspi said. “He’s a brother to me. You can turn to him about anything, and he tells you straight. He has helped me with so many things, made me a better teammate.”

On any given night during the Kings’ early-season skid, the sixth-year pro has done the following: Coaxed teammates out of funks. Scolded teammates for overreacting to fouls. Prodded teammates into the huddle. Barked at teammates to pass the ball. And though he stands only 6-foot-7 and weighs 195 pounds, the oldest (30) and longest-tenured King isn’t afraid of anyone. He stretches up onto his toes, gets up onto the soapbox, and goes face to face with beefy, 6-11 rookie DeMarcus Cousins.
“Cisco has done everything to me,” Cousins said with a grin. “He yells at me, tells me to calm down, doesn’t want me throwing my headband. He can motivate me, get me mad as well. But he knows what it’s like, too, because he used to have a real temper, and he’s been there for good and bad times. We listen to him.”

García has always been a worker. This is a gym rat. His late-night visits to the practice facility have added more than a few bucks to the Kings’ electric bills. No, his issues are lousy timing and bad luck. Who breaks a forearm and damages a wrist in a freak weightlifting session that forces him to miss the first 52 games last season?
….
Right. Lousy timing. Bad luck. But as García demonstrated in Sunday’s victory over the Phoenix Suns, he has reemerged as a versatile blend player who can rebound (11) and defend multiple positions (three blocks). He is also the club’s most consistent long-range shooter and one of the few Kings who intuitively makes the extra pass. While most of his teammates initiate scoring opportunities off the dribble – and mostly for themselves – Cisco will catch and shoot, or catch and pass, moving the defenses and providing angles and open looks.

And then, like he says, his additional duties persist into the night. For effect, he grabs his cell phone and points to a list of phone numbers. Donté Greene played few minutes Sunday and needed a call. Casspi (good game) needed a slap on the back. Tyreke Evans struggled again (sore foot) and needed some encouragement. Pooh Jeter (four assists) needed another one-on-one session in the practice facility.

García shrugged, then grinned. He’s just happy to have a job.

OK, the “just happy to have a job” line made me gag, but there’s a lot to like in there

In their scouting report, they talk about him being 22 in 2004 and 23 at draft time in 2005, so I guess that corroborates the 1981 birthday.

On the other hand, I’ve heard lots of DR athlete prodigies shift their birthdays around, so… um… I really have no clue.

McGrady accepts role, flourishes

link

The lesson here is, keep quiet, appease the coach, and you too can be Keith Bogans.

There were reports in the summer that the Bulls backed away from Tracy McGrady after a workout because they had concerns he wouldn’t be willing to accept a supporting role. For the Pistons, McGrady, 31, has started only when Rodney Stuckey was unable to go. … Before flirting with a triple-double in Monday night’s 102-97 loss at Utah, McGrady said sometimes the media doesn’t get the whole story. ’That’s just the power of the media, that’s what that is,’ McGrady said before his 11-point, 11-assist, nine-rebound night. ‘And once it gets out there, the public feeds into what the media is putting out there. It’s unfortunate in our case because they don’t always know the true story that’s behind the story. If there were any problems with me coming off the bench, you guys would have reported something about me this year complaining about coming off the bench. I have no problem with it.’ … He figures the Bulls passed on him because he said his goal was to make them look at him as a starter. ‘What do you want me to come in and say?’ he said. ‘I accept whatever role that’s given to me? But in my mind, because I’m so competitive and I believe in my ability, I was going to make them believe I was a starter.’ McGrady is averaging 5.9 points, 2.5 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 19 minutes.
