At least his D has been strong in the third.
Then again, everyone’s D has been. It looks like a completely different team.

Yeh, I like looking at silver linings like that.
Kinda like the nice surprise of Kurt Thomas still being able to offer something valuable to the team and be a decent back-up as well.

As always
We seriously don’t even need to trade for shooting guard when we have one already in Brewer. He’s averaging 7.1 points per 24 minutes in December and doing it while shooting 53%. He’s also nabbing 3.5 rebounds and almost 2 steals.

Bogans, CJ, Lu and Taj. I don’t think Taj(not as much), Bogans or CJ are any good, and Lu bugs me from an aesthetic and selfish standpoint. Though what I perceive to be selfishness could very well just be awful, awful court vision.

As far as I’m concerned, this is a loss. Teams like CLE should get wins if the lose by anything less than 15.

What the hell does that mean?
Derrick said the same thing after last game against Cleveland, and this one is far more embarassing. At home and CLE is missing three starters.
It means you're overreacting
about a game that we are going to win. A game that’s on the 2nd night of a back to back after new year’s eve. Relax.

Where are the CJ lovers now?
1-6 shooting. -7 overall. Par for the course for the worst backup PG in the east.
Kurt can't be letting a much smaller Leon Powe take him to the rack like that.
"in this day and age of "let's erect a statue"-isn't it time Jerry Reinsdorf is honored" - The Swirsk
Leon Powe was pretty damn good in Boston
Before he had that major injury towards the end of the year that cost him millions as he was a free agent.
I thoguht he looked pretty good tonight, I was surprised Scott sat him for a long stretch in the 3rd (when we made our run).
I think he’s expiring….might be a good guy to keep the eyes on Gar/Pax…..for the cheap…..as the Cavs basically paid him a bit to rehab.

Are tied with Utah for the most wins when trailing after three with 7.

There you go.
They can’t guard you D-Rose. Keep going to the rim.
One thing that slightly bugs me about Rose is that
if he hits a couple jumpers, that’s all he’ll do for a while. He needs to constantly mix it up

Meh. A lot of players will do that.
If they find something that is working, they want to keep going back to it. Nothing wrong with that.

Hell, it’s probably collectively pining for Big Macs..
We need to bring back the crowd from the mid 90s. They were better than this.

"I love you, mommy!" - Joakim Noah
Why? They need their rest...
Bench couldn’t hold up
They could have gotten that rest,
once we were up by 25 with 7 to go. Lead was up to 15. Play that same lineup to start the 4th, build the lead even more and then they’d get their rest.
I actually agree with this line of thinking

last time we played the cavs
i didn’t even get remotely concerned till we were down 6 with 3 min left. needless to say, i was only slightly nervous for like a minute when they were only up by 3.
this really sucks
seeing the bulls having this much trouble/not caring against a team without not just varejao, but also williams AND gibson.

by JustAnotherFan on Jan 1, 2011 8:31 PM CST up reply actions
He doesnt need to LOL. Deng is selfish because he doesn't EVER pass
on fast breaks and he will look over a wide open guy to make his move. Rose has 13, 12 assists, so we know he’s passing. Deng just needs to make the extra pass sometimes and he is failing at it.

I never said I didnt want him but back in 2007 me and my friend would argue who’d we want more Deng or Gordon. I’d argue for Deng, he’d argue for Gordon. I think I’d rather have Gordon right now but Deng is serviceable.

It shouldn't be about that
Nothing is more boring than watching “my turn” basketball. IMO this is what makes the Celtics so good (plus lockdown D).
I’m not saying Rose is a “my turn” player though, just urging you to reconsider the sentiment that all stars don’t have to play within a system too .
by Khalid El-Amin on Jan 1, 2011 8:37 PM CST up reply actions
Never said that was my sentiment. I'm talking about Deng being selfish.
That is all. Everyone here knows he has these weird moments when he doesnt pass the ball because he is so intent on scoring. On fast breaks it is unacceptable. He’s done that at least 10x this season.
by Playboy_BullV on Jan 1, 2011 8:38 PM CST up reply actions
and BG7 would do this too - both f them - I wonder who they got that from but it is damn annoying
Jordan. Pip, Kukoc always passed on the break and to see guys not doing it really irks me.

My bad then...
It seemed like you were saying it’s O.K. for Rose to be selfish once in a while because he is an all star.
by Khalid El-Amin on Jan 1, 2011 8:39 PM CST up reply actions
Well, I was implying I'd rather Rose be selfish over Deng because I see Rose has so many unselfish moments.
by Playboy_BullV on Jan 1, 2011 8:40 PM CST up reply actions
That's a different subject altogether...
And in no way would I ever argue that Deng and Rose are on the same level offensively. That being said, I personally don’t mind Deng trying to get his game going on offense, mostly because I usually fear the opposite and him fading away throughout the game.
by Khalid El-Amin on Jan 1, 2011 8:42 PM CST up reply actions
yes. deng's usage is pretty much exactly where i would want
it to be. my issue with him is hes not efficient enough for a guy whose shots often come with feet set and plenty of time and space, his defense has looked merely so-so this year, he still doesnt make plays for others, and he has stopped grabbing rebounds for some reason. im not sure deng has been a positive contributor this season so far, and that has to change.
"JJ has never made that floater. He’s probably never even practiced it, he just decided to take a floater, which is why he’s James Johnson."

"JJ has never made that floater. He’s probably never even practiced it, he just decided to take a floater, which is why he’s James Johnson."
-JocktrapNoah
It's a dumb word to use. They could have just said "Deng sucks at passing on the fast break" and made a better point.
Because he does kind of suck at passing.
by Ozzie Montana on Jan 2, 2011 2:16 AM CST up reply actions
I agree, I don't think Deng is selfish, even though I'm always screaming it during games
But I do find it interesting how once he finds the ball it pretty much NEVER gets to Rose. Even if Derrick is wide open, Lu will pass to the other side. It’s just weird.

im kind of sad tbh
when i went to the game on tuesday, bulls weren’t that close to 100 even though they won.
if they had been, it would have been funny to call out the people around me (who were dead quiet for the whole game) for cheering for the big macs and not for the game (and yeah, im guessing they would have cheered for the big macs. they cheered for the freaking doughnuts).

this is what I hate about the nba
i want basketball where a foul is a foul is a foul. not depending on the name on the jersey
Wade tries to jump over and through people
Rose usually runs around them. Not that Rose doesn’t get calls he deserves, but he probably won’t ever get to the line as much as Wade.

What the past 4 to 5 games have shown us is that
We need more scoring. Our defense and rebounding along with Rose and Boozer being awesome can carry is through ugly wins. Really good teams like the C’s can play shitty for stretches, but have the offensive firepower to hide their decencies. We don’t have that luxury with our team. I know when Noah get back it’s gonna help a lot, but the gapping hole a SG needs to addressed in some manner, regardless of what GarPaxDorf says.
Rose 2010!!!!!
We need one more shotmaker
Kinda like when we brought Salmons in, and saw dramatic improvement, I think with the right guy, a similar result can be had.

Just a thought… Denver wants 5 draft picks, the Bulls can at least give them 3 and probably 2 players in a deal for Melo. Melo needs to be on the Bulls because…. I mean Rose is a very good player and all but I just cannot see him leading this team to a championship even with Boozer.
Oh come on.
Boston has 3. Rondo is NOT a star, and if the fifth one is Shaq, then definitely not.

Rondo's starting lineup is filled with 4 hall of famers.
Three of them will go down as some of the best jump shooters at their respective positions. Also, Rondo doesn’t even look to score. He passes open wide open layups so he can pass the ball and get an assist.

Full argument aside for a moment
that’s not an unreasonable question. Rondo’s been known to fade in the 4th quarter. It’s just masked because of the fact that their are much better scorers surrounding him.

Rondo is perfect for the situation he's in.
That said, if a team were to actually be built around him as the driving force, it’d be pretty bad. For all his glory, he can’t shoot and is still just a passer who generates steals. His scoring comes as a function of the superstars around him. If he is a star, he’s the only star guard in the history of the league that can’t hit a 15 foot jumper.

I think ROndo would still be a star
Regardless where he is, but I don’t htink he’d be a 14 assist a night, superstar leader and MVP candidate if he didn’t have the personnel he has around him.
I could see him scoring about the same—though on more shots, assists dropping a bit (but he is a wizard of a passer) and his steals would go down a bit as he couldn’t take the risks he takes.

Agreed.
NBATV went to that game as it was ending and I wasn’t aware of his stats. But I noticed that with less than a minute left in the game Westbrook passed to Serg and he missed a jumper from the top of the key. Thing was, you could tell Westbrook was sort of mad at him for missing and he even said something to him. Now I’m thinking to myself, ’what’s wrong with this guy?’
Your team is winning etc etc. Then a few plays later he’s pushing the ball, then passes to Serg again and he dunks, now I’m like “WTF is going on?” Then the commentators mentioned that he got the assist he needed to get the triple double. SMH, that’s pretty cheap imo. Atlanta, if they play them again this season, should knock him on his ass a few times.
He sure made Ricky Davis & Andray Blatche proud.
I love how Mullin and company try to justify it
by saying he was just trying to get the ball across half court. He could have easily done it just dribbling. No one was trying to cover him.

If Korver was getting the looks Bogans get his shooting percentage would be approaching last year levels. Plus he is a much better passer than Bogans. I just don’t know if you get away with playing him against the top 2s in the East. He can’t guard Allen, Wade or Richardson.

Korver’s actually not bad at chasing guys through screens and guarding Allen primarily involves doing just that.

Maybe Houston would be receptive to a Martin + Battier for Deng + Korver + Asik swap
Houston gets younger and picks up a guy capable of being a defensive anchor in the middle and we get a more complete starting lineup. Losing Asik kinda sucks but with Kurt Thomas’s re-emergence as a serviceable backup C, we’re dealing from an area of strength. Then this summer maybe we continue the Jazz East theme and make a run at Andrei Kirilenko with the MLE.
Pat Riley is the devil.
bleh
i’m not a fan of giving up asik on the premise that thomas is a serviceable backup C. the guy is 38. asik could very well be a long term valuable backup whereas i don’t see thomas’ value past this year really.
The point is we'll be fine this year
And we’ll have Kevin Martin. He’s really really good. Here’s a list of players in the league who have logged 500 minutes this year with >25% USG, sorted by TS%. KMart’s number 2.

Shut the Funk Up!!!!!!! No, seriously...... shut his A$$ up!!!
you know what
i just saw this comment from avery johnson:
“Adding Boozer was a really nice pickup,” Johnson said. “When (Joakim) Noah comes back, they’re looking like a solid fourth or fifth seed in the Eastern Conference.”
what the fuck is this shit? why do people keep talking about the bulls as if they aren’t currently the 3rd seed in the east?

Coming from the guy who was spurned for the Bulls job twice.

lol
it was in an article on the trib’s website saying he wasn’t bitter, either.
but i just don’t get it: do people seriously not see the bulls’ record? i swear i see comments like this a lot, and not just from a douche like avery johnson.
Perhaps he just sees Boston, Miami, and Orlando as the top three teams in the east.
That is an entirely understandable point of view, and one of these three will most likely represent the east in the finals.
Its not like the Bulls have beaten either the Magic or Hawks.

I agree with that, but to say "four or five seed"
it kinda puts the Bulls in a box as one of the good non-contending teams. And, while that might be the case, rarely do you hear other coaches say it. They’ll just say “They’re really good” or something like that. I agree with Jaina, it was a pretty douchey comment for another coach to make

the part that bugs me the most is the
“with noah” clause. sure, people may think of us as a solid 4 seed or whatever. but we’re already there, having played the majority of our games without one of our best players. it’s not like we’re at #6 looking up and he’s saying well when noah comes back they’ll gain ground. maybe we are the 4 seed and noah’s not enough to gain ground on the top 3. but we’ve proven we can at least take care of the games we still should be winning (for the most part) without him.
haha, yeah I was kinda pissed at that too the other day
I didn’t bring it up because I just figured he was suffering enough, why pile on? Big time douche though.

Avery Johnson has had a personal dislike for the Bulls for a while now
Not sure if it’s because they never contacted him (twice) to coach or if it’s just his personal preference. A little on Avery though: this is the same guy who before he even had an interview with the Nets (although ‘sources’ said he was the favorite for the job) was using his ESPN analyst job to say that the Nets were by far the best choice for Lebron. He was basically recruiting Lebron so that he could coach him.
by Scala-three-ne on Jan 2, 2011 5:01 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
Although honestly, he's probably right
It sounds worse because he said “or 5th seed” but Miami, Boston, and Orlando will be the top 3, and there will be absolutely no stopping Miami or ESPN come playoff time. Miami will win the championship, and LeBron will be a bitch about it.

Better than Boozer
Boozer is just a matador out there
"I love you, mommy!" - Joakim Noah
They're both shitty help defenders. Which is why Asik needs more burn, especially since Taj can't hit jumpers anymore.
No sense in going small if it’s not going to help offensively.
by Ozzie Montana on Jan 2, 2011 12:43 AM CST up reply actions
Take this with a grain of salt due to small sample size
But so far, when Thomas and Boozer are on the floor together, the Bulls have played great defense. Check it out. It’s probably due in large part to the shitty quality of the Bulls recent opposition, but it’s still encouraging.
Pat Riley is the devil.
I never said they were bad defenders overall, just poor at help defense.
Kurt could probably be a top 5 post defender at the age of 60, dude is rock solid.
by Ozzie Montana on Jan 2, 2011 1:04 AM CST up reply actions
Oh, I'm sure you've said Boozer was a bad defender overall on more than one occasion.
But the overall results have been fantastic, and that’s what matters in the end, no?
Pat Riley is the devil.
It's crazy that he's done such a good job overall
yet cant tell Bogans to sit the hell down.
He actually defends now, as opposed to his days in Utah when he would just hack people.
But that’s what happens when you get a coach who knows defense.
by Ozzie Montana on Jan 2, 2011 2:17 AM CST up reply actions
Too old and too slow.
Fortunately he’s good at man defense.

Can Asik be groomed to replace Boozer down the line?
He has good technique on his shot, and seems to enjoy dunking and banging in the paint. As he matures and communication and recognition becomes easier his production should increase significantly. 6’11+ and desire is hard to come across, and we have two in Noah and Asik.
people are complaining about how the Bulls win.
This is great.

Sort of funny thing
I was watching Sportsnite on Comcast, don’t know if anyone else caught this, but there’s a point in the postgame report where Boozer is being interviewed, and you can hear players in the background talking about the crowd. I’m 90% sure they were talking about how quiet it was. I specifically heard somebody say something to the effect of “it ain’t like that for the Blackhawks”. The first thing I heard was “Yeah! What’s up with our crowd?!!”, I think. I don’t know, just thought that was kinda interesting. Couldn’t make out who was talking. If anyone else heard the same stuff let me know if I’m right or if I’m nuts.

Ok, I found a link to video of what I was referring to
I was a little off with what I thought he said. He actually says something like: “Is it me, or is our crowd real quiet?” or something close to that. Then you hear a few of the players discussing, but it’s really hard to make out. I definitely heard them say something about the Blackhawks, and Big Macs. I think the person said, “It’s quiet, then we get close to Big Macs, and it’s ‘AHHHH!!!’”. I don’t know, you guys give it a listen, and let me know what you think. I just think it’s interesting to hear a player’s perspective on something we’ve brought up on here several times. These crowds suck.

New season ticket holder and I think the crowd deserves some ribbing for sure.
I bought season tickets during LeBron-a-thon…but in my mind it still ended up being a good investment. It has been a pleasure watching DRose this season. I really don’t think watching him on TV does him any justice…his acrobatic moves and speed are way more impressive in person.
Back to the point at hand though…yes, the crowd generally isn’t all that great. It is what it is though. They get up for the big games and playoffs…probably like most crowds in the NBA.
I know I generally try and be the best fan I can be at the games I attend. It only goes so far way up in section 323 though I guess.
Heh, the Crowd complains about how the Bulls win.
The Bulls complain about the quiet crowd.

Could the Bulls have acquired Nick Young in the Hinrich deal?
Young makes 1.3million more than Bogans this year and will be a restricted free-agent this summer. In size and ability he resembles a young Joe Johnson, though perhaps without the court awareness, and they were ready to give him at least as much as Boozer. Could a more savvy GM have insisted on the still unproven but talented Young in the deal as insurance for the perimeter should a Wade or LeBron deal not worked out?
Young has really been a feast or famine sort of guy... I'd think we probably could have gotten him b/c he was definitely in famine mode last year
He much more resembles JR Smith to me, but cheaper and not quite as much of a knucklehead
BullsTwo > Back up and running!
Man, if people thought Ben Gordon was a selfish player
watch out
The Miami Heat: Like ants and a magnifying glass. ... OH NO! CHRIS BOSH’S BEAUTIFUL FACE!!!!!!!!
Doubt it
We had to throw in a pick to get them to take Hinrich in the first place. They probably weren’t willing to throw in another player, let alone one on a rookie contract.
Pat Riley is the devil.
Bulls are 2.5 games outta the first spot in the East
Without Boozer and Noah for most of the year and playing one of the toughest schedules in the league thus far.
Is it so big of a dream to think we can lock up that first spot and have homecourt advantage through the playoffs?!
I mean, Miami seems to have similar problems (can’t beat really great teams, take care of losing teams) but they’ve been relatively healthy throughout the year, minus Miller and Haslem. I wouldn’t say either has an impact like Noah or Boozer. If we can sustain this pace until Noah gets back, I really believe we got a shot at this.
And Bogans is STILL starting!

Re: one of the toughest schedules in the league thus far
This is certainly no longer true. The last 11 opponents have collectively won 35% of their games this year. According to ESPN, the team’s strength of schedule has fallen from 1st to 22nd over that span.
I think it’s essentially an impossible dream for the Bulls to lock up the #1 seed in the playoffs and homecourt advantage throughout. However, right now it’s very nice to have as big a division lead as any team in the NBA. The Bulls should be able to coast to a top 4 seed while the other top teams battle for homecourt. Then a full strength and rested Bulls team can show how good it is in the playoffs.
Of course hopefully that full strength and rested Bulls team won’t still be starting Keith Bogans or depending on him to play significant minutes of any kind.
