Team U.S.A. vs Angola, Open Thread

Okay so it's the Round of 16 already. Spain, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey are onto the next round. Team USA are expected to beat this African Champs easily. The team conducted practice yesterday to avoid some sluggish play especially in the first half. They haven't had the opportunity to practice since their last exhibition game against Greece therefore, we'll see whether they will improve their play.

Here's to hoping that Rose will have his breakout game so far in this tournament. Share your thoughts in the comments below. Cheers!

Yes they are

On one hand I’m happy that the US has an easier route to the final because it would be nice to see Derrick win some gold, but I’m getting tired of watching these scrub teams

Superteams suck.

WOW.

Kevin and his tunnel vision repeatedly miss Rose for an open 3, then when Odom does realize he’s open, it’s a bad pass.

By design

Rose wants to win, but he clearly is also trying to work on the other aspects of his game. I like that he has only taken 5 shots and has about 6 assists and 2 blocked shots.

Could have a MAJOR viewing confilct next weekend

First game of Bears season, and the FIBA Championship (assuming the US is alive). I think they’re on right around the same time. Which one do you watch???

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 6, 2010 11:39 AM CDT reply actions

wow

i’m so down on the Bears, but I have to tune into that first game. Football games move so slow, you can probably watch 70% of the FIBA game during the stops in play.

This us team is actually quite boring to watch, if I say so myself.

This Bears D cannot contain Calvin Johnson

No way Detroit only scores 10.
But I think this is a bit too far off topic…

So I'm assuming we're winning

if we’re talking about the Bears now…I was gonna tune in, but it sounds like it’d be a waste of time.

121-66

Rose his 3 threes and had 6 assists and 2 blocked shots. Still, I am waiting for someone to come and say that Rose played like shit.

Can't believe I slept through most of this

I like the 3’s and blocks. How did his D look overall?

Fine.

Played D well. Was a facilitator on offense. Didn’t try to do too much… and did not need to against Angola. No turnovers.

Thanks.

Huh.

Thanks to that box score, I just learned that the non-lead referees are called “umpires” in fiba. Weird. Also, only 5 TO’s on the team. 3 of them from Steph Curry, who also had a rough game from downtown. Rose’s 3/4 from long range is pretty sweet (as are his assists and blocks) but I would have liked to see him get to the free throw line at least once.

Did you watch the game?

Anyone that has watched these games should have already noticed that Derrick isn’t interested in taking over games and “making a name for himself” in this tourney. He shots when he’s open and isn’t trying to force anything, just initiate the offense. He rarely takes the ball into the painted area and that’s why he’s not going to the line.

Once people realize that Derrick truly doesn’t give a damn about looking good in this tournament, there will be no unwarranted panicking over his play.

by dakoose on Sep 6, 2010 1:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

FIBA rules allow defensive players to stay in the paint (i.e. no 3 seconds rule). This is a game changer for NBA players who drive the lane and needs to be taken into consideration when analyzing Rose’s performance. If anything its on the break where you witness more of the performance we are used to.

by Bryan_ on Sep 6, 2010 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I missed all but about the last 2 minutes

so I didn’t see Derrick play. I was actually trying to get a feel for how Derrick’s overall play was via the boxscore, and that’s the only thing that stood out as a possible deficiency, as only he, Steph Curry and Eric Gordon didn’t have a free throw attempt. The team as a whole had 26.
General sentiment seems to be that Derrick is playing smart ball and executing well. Very good to hear. Thanks to those of you who watched for the input.

Ok

But what if the reason you’re worried is because “Derrick doesn’t give a damn about looking good”? I’m a long way from freaking out, and I really am not putting a lot of stock in how he performs in this thing, but I think it would have been nice to see him try and be the man a little more. Especially when you look at the names on this roster. That said, it’s not like he’s performed poorly. He just hasn’t really distinguished himself either, which is kinda what I was hoping for. I guess I would say I’m slightly disappointed up to this point, but a lot can change in the next three games (if they play three more games).

Superteams suck.
