Team U.S.A. vs Angola, Open Thread
Okay so it's the Round of 16 already. Spain, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey are onto the next round. Team USA are expected to beat this African Champs easily. The team conducted practice yesterday to avoid some sluggish play especially in the first half. They haven't had the opportunity to practice since their last exhibition game against Greece therefore, we'll see whether they will improve their play.
Here's to hoping that Rose will have his breakout game so far in this tournament. Share your thoughts in the comments below. Cheers!

Yes they are
On one hand I’m happy that the US has an easier route to the final because it would be nice to see Derrick win some gold, but I’m getting tired of watching these scrub teams
Superteams suck.

oh yeah right. Turkey or Spain will likely be n the final round. They do not meet until then.
A good semis match up should be Argentina vs USA
Best start of any game yet for Team USA
But they are playing Angola…

Beat them by 68. Let’s not set our standards as low as the 2008 olympic team

Just found out they were playing...Cool!
Yeah but it worked!
Live boxscore anyone?
How’s Derrick doing?

I only saw him miss 2 shots, not making any
and this http://espn.go.com/extra/fiba/boxscore?gameId=300908917 says 0 steals, but I swear I saw him get one.
you can also try this

I'm happy Chauncey is playing well
But I’m scared he will shoot the USA out of agame

WOW.
Kevin and his tunnel vision repeatedly miss Rose for an open 3, then when Odom does realize he’s open, it’s a bad pass.
smh

Yup, he got passed over for Darko Milicic and Al Jefferson

Rose looks so passive out there. :(

By design
Rose wants to win, but he clearly is also trying to work on the other aspects of his game. I like that he has only taken 5 shots and has about 6 assists and 2 blocked shots.

lol it's an ultra-blowout
Do you want him to put the blinders on and drive hard into the lane?

I think he's missed more "easy" scoring opportunities than anyone on the team

Yup.
He and Billups have missed a ton of layups.
I'm not talking about this game,
rather the entire tournament. Billups hasn’t been very good until now.
I xcant stand Billups
Can’t stand is ugly face

the fact that Kevin Love came off the bench
is reason to fire the entire Minnesota staff. Reason #2 is that they are running the triangle with 9 point guards.

ESPN needs to stop having their own box score
Or at least let someone who can count run it. It is wildly inaccurate.

Could have a MAJOR viewing confilct next weekend
First game of Bears season, and the FIBA Championship (assuming the US is alive). I think they’re on right around the same time. Which one do you watch???
Superteams suck.
wow
i’m so down on the Bears, but I have to tune into that first game. Football games move so slow, you can probably watch 70% of the FIBA game during the stops in play.

Bears
This us team is actually quite boring to watch, if I say so myself.

Not as boring as watching Cutler get sacked 10 times
And the defense giving up 62 yard touchdown passes.

Basketball
no question.
There are really only two plays: Romeo and Juliet, and put the darn ball in the basket.

The Bears season is over before it even began. Cutler is going to get murdered this season behind that joke O-line.
Basketball all the way.

when atleast 3 fingers of kevin love get a hold of the ball
its almost impossible to steal it from him lol
So I'm assuming we're winning
if we’re talking about the Bears now…I was gonna tune in, but it sounds like it’d be a waste of time.
121-66
Rose his 3 threes and had 6 assists and 2 blocked shots. Still, I am waiting for someone to come and say that Rose played like shit.

Can't believe I slept through most of this
I like the 3’s and blocks. How did his D look overall?

Fine.
Played D well. Was a facilitator on offense. Didn’t try to do too much… and did not need to against Angola. No turnovers.

Huh.
Thanks to that box score, I just learned that the non-lead referees are called “umpires” in fiba. Weird. Also, only 5 TO’s on the team. 3 of them from Steph Curry, who also had a rough game from downtown. Rose’s 3/4 from long range is pretty sweet (as are his assists and blocks) but I would have liked to see him get to the free throw line at least once.

Did you watch the game?
Anyone that has watched these games should have already noticed that Derrick isn’t interested in taking over games and “making a name for himself” in this tourney. He shots when he’s open and isn’t trying to force anything, just initiate the offense. He rarely takes the ball into the painted area and that’s why he’s not going to the line.
Once people realize that Derrick truly doesn’t give a damn about looking good in this tournament, there will be no unwarranted panicking over his play.
Exactly
FIBA rules allow defensive players to stay in the paint (i.e. no 3 seconds rule). This is a game changer for NBA players who drive the lane and needs to be taken into consideration when analyzing Rose’s performance. If anything its on the break where you witness more of the performance we are used to.
I missed all but about the last 2 minutes
so I didn’t see Derrick play. I was actually trying to get a feel for how Derrick’s overall play was via the boxscore, and that’s the only thing that stood out as a possible deficiency, as only he, Steph Curry and Eric Gordon didn’t have a free throw attempt. The team as a whole had 26.
General sentiment seems to be that Derrick is playing smart ball and executing well. Very good to hear. Thanks to those of you who watched for the input.

Ok
But what if the reason you’re worried is because “Derrick doesn’t give a damn about looking good”? I’m a long way from freaking out, and I really am not putting a lot of stock in how he performs in this thing, but I think it would have been nice to see him try and be the man a little more. Especially when you look at the names on this roster. That said, it’s not like he’s performed poorly. He just hasn’t really distinguished himself either, which is kinda what I was hoping for. I guess I would say I’m slightly disappointed up to this point, but a lot can change in the next three games (if they play three more games).
Superteams suck.

You want him to be selfish
Thats what it boils down to. You want that to serve the end of your own desire to see him excel, which will boost your low confidence that the Bulls can overcome a decade of mediocrity. Anything that doesn’t involve him being the most dominant player on the court leaves you anxious because a certain ‘shadow’ of experience leaves you to feel that only by possessing the most dominant player will the Bulls win again.
I’m glad that DRose isn’t out there playing to cater to your lack of confidence, and is instead learning from a great coach and quietly working hard on his game and team basketball to bring to his newly improved Bulls in ’10-11.

I believe that Derrick only wants to take over when he thinks his team needs it.
I saw enough down the stretch last year to know that he can be everything I want him to be, and this tournament hasn’t changed that one bit. In the one game that was truly tight, Derrick scored the final four points for USA, so you can look at that if you want to feel good. He feels like the team will be fine without him being dominant, but if at any time the team needs him to step up, I think he’ll be ready.
