I for one am VERY interested in seeing how these changes affect the game

They tried to implement this rule last year or a couple years ago

and it sucked to watch the game because there were technical fouls called constantly for a natural reactions on the court.

Games are going to last at least 20-30 minutes longer.

by PricanStar on Sep 24, 2010 2:26 PM CDT reply actions

However

They have since added that accumulating technical foul rule leads to a suspension as well.

Frankly, if you’re going to T the players up in game then give them some freedom to talk publicly about the officiating after games. Essentially the rules now are SHUT UP about every call.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

I'm afraid to read

Here's a better idea

get better officials and end star calls. With the rules written the way they are, almost any reaction can be deemed technical worthy. That is going to lead more problems, not less. Damn, Stu Jackson is dumb.

by Basketball Smurf on Sep 24, 2010 2:29 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

i go into more detail below but…a single gesture, no matter what it means or implies, should not affect an entire teams chance to win…only the individual himself should be punished. I cant wait until the playoffs when people start calling for double standards when a guy like noah is suspended for fist pumping, while a guy like kobe goes untouched….and the team that loses the player is screwed for that game and most likely the next…its ridiculous….losses to fist pumps?! Really?

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

this

i’ve never heard jackson say anything that makes sense.

by obnoxious american on Sep 24, 2010 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

He was the Vancouver Grizzlies GM . . .

And he did such an awful job that the franchise had to move to Memphis. Naturally, he gets hired by the league office. Nothing like failing upward in the NBA.

by Big D on Sep 24, 2010 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

ha, looks like kahn will be the next commisioner.

by obnoxious american on Sep 26, 2010 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

i dont like this

in fact i hate anything that gives the refs anymore power than they already have…a guy shoots a ft, misses it, goes ‘gosh darn it’ with a punch in mid air…WHAM TECHNICAL!!!…thats ridiculous…

the nba should just enforce a negative endorsement act. Since it seems stern is just trying to get rid of anything that brings the nba a negative image, they should just implement a clause that whenever a player does something that brings negative attention to the nba or its players, that player is fined an x ammount of money, and the fine can go up as each offense is repeated.

Since theres all sorts of ways of getting negative player reactions into the light through blogs, and youtube like sites, it shouldnt be neccessary to give refs the chance to be judge and jury and try to use their “judgement” to decipher player actions. emotion is part of any game, and to fans it can be enjoyable, but most fans know when to draw the line.

So when the media and fans look at a certain players actions and start saying that it was stupid, it is then the nba should step in and enforce some sort of punishment, especially for simple gestures….gestures should never influence whether a team wins or loses games….its completely dumb

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

by piccolomair on Sep 24, 2010 2:31 PM CDT reply actions

yea

I understood at first some of the image rules, like showing up to games in non ghetto clothes….to me thats fine, cuz yea enforce a professional image and eventually it starts to set up the atmosphere, gives players a better chance to actually look like role models which is good for the youth…but its going to far when you are enforcing the image rule so much that its gonna start affecting wins and losses, and its even worse knowing that the stars are still gonna get away with everything…kobe will growl all he wants and no one will even bat an eye….lebron james is gonna dance with bosh and the refs will just be like “oh you knuckleheads”….its gonna get old real quick

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

by piccolomair on Sep 24, 2010 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

yep

one of the main problems I have with this is selective enforcement. Lebron, Wade, Kobe – those guys will never be punished. On the other hand, it looks like Rasheed Wallace retired just in time. He wouldn’t have made it through 5 games.

by Basketball Smurf on Sep 24, 2010 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

It could very well turn out the way you predict

But I see these rule changes as the NBA trying to curb this star-treatment/whining thing.

And I hope it works.

by BAB-Bass on Sep 25, 2010 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions

how will this curb star treatment?

I don’t think the stars get the calls because they whine, i think they get the calls because their stars. Now, when someone overreacts to getting called on a phantom foul against Wade or Kobe, they will be T’d up as well. This move is meant merely to silence criticism. But if it is legit criticism, than it shouldn’t be silenced.

by Basketball Smurf on Sep 25, 2010 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I like this if it would actually work

complaining is one of the bigger turn-offs of watching the game, IMO.

They really shouldn’t have the referees do it exclusively though. There needs to be after-game replay enforcement on complaining, flopping (remember that new rule?), etc. Like in soccer how they can give out cards after games after video review.

might end up being good for the bulls

we dont have many complainers left on the roster, kirk was the last one that i can remember always gettin T’ed up. hopefully this is being instituted to control the egomaniacs like lebron who think everything is a foul.

by krypto22 on Sep 24, 2010 3:01 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

Players will just have to adjust

It will be good for the game

yeah that's the thing

if this is actually enforced, lebron would be ejected from every game.

sooo guess we’ll see.

Not good for Carlos Boozer

He complains often and loudly. I remember being shocked last year in the Utah game how loud he was. Hopefully he can control it when he needs to, or its going to be a long year.

by runningman on Sep 24, 2010 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

Boozer is even in the videos the refs are studying.
On Thursday night, executives from the referee operations department showed videos of some plays that would warrant technicals this season to officials and media during the referees’ training camp in Jersey City, N.J.

In one play, Carlos Boozer swings his arm in anger after a missed shot, likely believing he was fouled. However, there was not a referee nearby, leaving open the possibility that Boozer was perhaps angry with himself and not yelling at an official.

From here

great, referees are being asked to interpret

when someone is mad at themselves, an opposing player, or an official. Great job Stern.

aka lebron is mad at himself

and everyone else is talking shit to the refs

Typical idiotic marketing by the NBA

Hey, our players are whiny bitches who complain after every call, and we need to tighten up the technical foul rules to keep them from acting like animals. Get your NBA tickets now!

by Big D on Sep 24, 2010 3:28 PM CDT reply actions

I think it's reaction to people already thinking they are whiny bitches

I believe this is an actual entertainment problem already for the league. Not that this will help.

The refs suck, but I have no problem with this

As much as this is going to slow the game down and will inevitably cause problems, I will enjoy watching the entire Boston roster get T-ed up.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Sep 24, 2010 10:39 PM CDT reply actions

Right..

but now players that complain about legit no-calls are going to get T-ed up.
Now Rose can’t be a whiney bitch!

You would cut down on 70% of the excessive whining by limiting the rule to these players

Kobe Bryant
LeBron James
Chris Paul
Dwyane Wade
Every player on the Boston Celtics

I also love how this comes out after Rasheed Wallace retires.

DANIEL HUDSON SUCKS. HOWS THAT GUN BAN WORKING FOR YOU MAYOR DALLY

by Ozzie Montana on Sep 25, 2010 4:03 PM CDT reply actions

I think 'star calls' are real (obviously)

But put yourself in the refs position. You’re standing there watching these guys play and you know that no one on the court is better than Kobe.

Therefore aren’t you already kinda in the mindset of knowing that guys will need to foul/cheat to slow him down? Aren’t you thinking “man Calderon has no chance against this guy” and therefore are quicker to call something?
