[UPDATE (9/8): Griffin 'on verge' of being hired?] McGraw: Bulls 'closer' to hiring new assistant

[Note by your friendly BullsBlogger, 09/08/10 8:33 AM CDT: Via fanshot (via ChicagoNow) , Gery Woelfel out of Milwaukee is reporting as if Griffin is already hired. More when it's official, but my first instinct is that he's a fine 'player-coach' addition but Thibodeau could probably use a higher caliber lead assistant in addition. Plus all the '06-'07 nonsense with Griffin makes me think he's the Org. spy. Someone ask Noah what he thinks of this.]

Mentions the candidates we know, Porter and Musselman, though this is interesting:

with the Bulls moving Pete Myers off the bench, this hire is clearly targeting a former NBA player and Musselman does not qualify.

McGraw also throws in former Bulls A-drain Griffin, maybe because of that 'need' for a former player. Right now the lead assistants include pretty much just Ron Adams. I don't see why Musselman couldn't be hired AND a former player brought on-board as well.

Sidney Green is mentioned as possibly returning as big man coach.

Im all for a former player

but he better be established (sorry pippen). Last think we need is two rookies on the sidelines…even Vinny had experience next to him

I reject your reality... and substitute my own.

I think

Terry Porter could be a nice fit

by QUINTEN DALEY on Sep 2, 2010 12:22 PM CDT reply actions

for some reason i thought Musselman had played at least a little

anyways, he’d be my top choice. maybe he’d be a good assistant coach, but his head coaching jobs have left a bad taste.

by M 80 on Sep 2, 2010 2:23 PM CDT reply actions

oops

second thought was about Porter.

Yeah

What about Aaron Gray?

I can't believe there's this much of a "process"

even for hiring an assistant coach. Just hire somebody that players respect and is either a good teacher of individual skills or team concepts, preferably both. Is it really this hard?

meh, it's not like there's competition

as long as they’re in place for training camp.

Alex Kennedy
Adrian Griffin is emerging as the front-runner for the Bulls assistant coaching job but I’m also told a new candidate has entered the mix.

in all seriousness, what does "FTW" mean? my initial guesses were "fuck the world", and "for the win".

He can teach Bogans & Thomas the proper wrist technique for the counter-clockwise towel wave.

by chowder on Sep 8, 2010 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions

They already know that, he

has to teach James Johnson that, he’ll be doing plenty of towel waving, body-bumping, give out dap, and hi-5ing, my guess, he’ll break Jack Haley’s all-time Bull record for Hi-5’s in a season.

What happened between Noah and Griffin? I can't remember

Was he involved with the Ron Adams argument or something?

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 8, 2010 9:27 AM CDT reply actions

yes

after the one-game suspension, the veterans Wallace and Griffin suspended Noah that extra game.

I don’t doubt Griffin will serve the role as Org. spy. Someone’s gotta be. I’d guess Noah and he patched things up and/or they just all blame Wallace.

My bigger concern is this looks like quite the lightweight coaching staff overall, but ‘heftier’ assistants like what VDN had didn’t exactly work out either.

Also,

It was reported at the time that such a players-only imposed suspension was unprecedented. And that’s just crazy. Adrian Griffin, participant in the first ever suspension of a fellow player by veteran teammates. What kind of bullshit is that?

Given all of the dysfunction of that 07-08 season, it’s a real head-scratcher that they’d give AG another shot here. You’d think that they’d want to distance themselves from everyone who played a role in that debacle.

I agree that this must mean that in hindsight they attribute the dysfunction to others (Ben Wallace the declining prima donna superstar, Scott Skiles the mercurial coach, etc.). Either that, or they were so impressed with AG that they’ve forgiven him enough to put him in the role of org spy, I guess.

where's the blame for the suckage?

he said it was dysfunctional. That’s partially on Griffin.

huh?

there was an explicit incident where a player who didn’t coach did the suspensions that the coach wouldn’t do.

If you want to blame him for that fine

Bullhockey was implying that griffin was somehow to blame for our overall suckage that year, which I think is silly because he was neither an impact player nor an actual coach that year.

Pat Riley is the devil.

Ahh, I see.

I forgot he was involved, I just remember Wallace being the culprit.

CSNChicago:

CSNChicago.com has learned that another candidate, who didn’t wish to be identified, is also in the running for an assistant-coaching job with the Bulls.
