Should be interesting to see how Pocius does for Lithuania. He may try to show up Coach K.

Is this gonna be a game worth watching?

Don’t want to sit down for a 4520 point blowout.

by Stacey_Is_King on Sep 11, 2010 11:06 AM CDT reply actions

No, it should be close (for a while at least). Plus, it is the semis.

There’s Pocius with the 3.

Everyone else looks like shit (especially Rose)

You're insane.

Especially Rose? He may not be playing great, but he hasn’t been anywhere near shit. He’s actually been pretty ok.

by dakoose on Sep 11, 2010 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Cause he's played like shit

At least relative to his talent. He’s not TJ Ford for fuck’s sake.

Superteams suck.

Your level of hate is getting pathetic.

Here are the PG’s that got to the line more than Derrick last year: Billups, Harris, DWill, Westbrook, Miller, Parker. Only Deron Williams is better, and all but Westbrook have been in the league far longer than Derrick. He was seventh among PG’s in FTA as a sophomore, that’s not bad at all. Get over it.

by dakoose on Sep 11, 2010 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Whatever guy

I’ll just paste what I wrote in the other thread when Basketball Smurf said the exact same thing:

All of those guys you mentioned are much better passers than Rose and do other things better too(steals, rebounds), so they don’t need to get to the line and score as much to help their teams. Rose is a scoring pg. That’s where his value lies. So unless he becomes a much better passer and three point shooter next year (which is possible), he’s gonna have to up those free throws by a good margin if he wants to be considered an elite player.

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 11, 2010 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

that doesn't change the fact that he still goes to the line a decent amount

for his position. I didn’t respond because I thought it was a non-sequitur

by Basketball Smurf on Sep 11, 2010 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't care about position

Rose isn’t a pure pg. And if you think he is, then you can change my complaint from Free Throws to Assists, and it would still be valid. In other words, he’s lacking.

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 11, 2010 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I still think he's really good

It’s just that I’m starting to think that if he’s you’re best player, you’re not winning anything.

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 11, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

What's a pure PG?

He’s not all about passing and scores more than a typical PG, but he’s good enough to get to 8 assist/game. He hasn’t had a good partner for a pick and roll yet and has only had one player alongside him that can shoot, that being BG. He’s now got Boozer, Korver and Watson, so I’d be shocked if his assist numbers don’t jump significantly.

by dakoose on Sep 11, 2010 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I hope they do

And if they do, the free throws are not as much of a concern. But, in his second year they went down, not up. And that’s not all because of his teammates

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 11, 2010 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

his assist rate went up.

Westbrook doesnt run the team when he is out there

And he has some dumb turnovers. Derrick is trying to play a role instead of doing like Chance and jacking up shots. Once you realize his aim you shouldn’t get upset. He isnt trying to take over. The game is different.

by Playboy_Bull on Sep 11, 2010 11:45 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I just do not understand this line of thinking

Everyone thinks Rose is gonna be a top 5-10 player, yet everyone is ok with him being a ghost in this competition, and getting outplayed by guys he’s supposed to be way better than. This thing was gift wrapped for him to be a star, but it looks like he can’t wait to get rid of the ball. I’m not advocating him jacking shots like Billups, but do… something.

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 11, 2010 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Dude he is a role player here

Just like Wade was, and other stars has been. He is showing he doesn’t have to be the man to be successful. All you care about is stats or flash. Come October we will have that.

by Playboy_Bull on Sep 11, 2010 12:07 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Once you can accept that he truly only cares about winning

and isn’t big on personal stuff, this tournament is much easier to watch. Even when he was dominating late in the season and doing ridiculous stuff, he wasn’t out there pounding his chest like Durant or screaming like Westbrook. He’s just different, and it can be both refreshing and frustrating at the same time.

by dakoose on Sep 11, 2010 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you juicebox

Rose looks beyond terrible.

The reality is he isn’t a star. He’s an almost-star.

Rose has usually been the 2nd best player on this team

You could argue Love, but everyone else has had games where they looked far worse than Rose’s worst game.

Coach K clearly wants Billups running things, which really limits what Rose can do. Just relax.

Good thing

you’re not an NBA GM. It’s simple, if you followed NCAA and NBA you would never be jealous of OKC having Westbrook rather than Rose. Rose clearly is the better player and you’re being a Chicken Little.

It's a little galling (though admittedly somewhat irrationally so)

to see Derrick, our shining hope for the future, getting outplayed by Westbrook.

(I know, I sound like a homer, it’s just perplexing Derrick isn’t stepping up a little).

by Saracenn on Sep 11, 2010 11:43 AM CDT reply actions

Wow, some of you all really need to relax. This isn’t his team and he is not called on to do what he normally does. Yes, his shooting if off today but his defense hasn’t been half bad and he is being a facilitator. Now, when he gets back with the Bulls and is not being assertive then you would have a good reason to complain.

by k21c on Sep 11, 2010 11:52 AM CDT reply actions

I agree with some of the Rose bashing to some degree

Some, not all. I think that, in his role as the facilitator he has debilitated his ability to play his normal game. He is having a hard time transitioning from passer to aggressor and I think this tournament and his off-season work will help go a long way to making that transition go more smoothly.

For now, I am just hoping for USA victories. I will be pleased with what Rose is doing well and I won’t worry about what he is not doing well because we already know he can score and get to the basket and he will do so in the NBA games that matter more to Bulls fans.

Here's what I'm noticing.

Aside from Durant, the guys out there that look most comfortable are used to playing with better players or as a second or third options: Love, Gordon, Westbrook, Odom, etc. Derrick, Gay and Iguodala are the only ones other than Durant used to being the “guy” on their respective teams, and they look uncomfortable trying to play off of Durant. (I am reaching a bit to try and defend Derrick, but this does go along with my observations.) The team doesn’t practice much and doesn’t have many plays, which makes things even worse.

Don't recall saying they did

It’s simply stating the obvious different between an efficient scorer (Durant) and a generally inefficient scorer (Melo.)

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Sep 11, 2010 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

but its still not relevant to anything

Melo is available, Durant is not. Melo is worth a couple picks, Deng and Taj, and I would do it without even blinking twice. I wouldn’t give up Noah though – thus, there probably won’t be a deal.

by Basketball Smurf on Sep 11, 2010 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

It is relevant to the only thing I am talking about

the fact that Melo is not an efficient scorer. You are bringing up your own topic and using it to say my separate topic is not relevant to yours. I am not talking about the trade possibilities in any capacity.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Sep 11, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

What on earth are you doing?

I brought up Melo ONLY because the notion that he was an efficient scorer was passed around. That’s all. Stop fabricating your own reasons for my words. If you want to do so, discuss it with yourself.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Sep 11, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, thank dog.

I don’t want to lose Noah for anyone and think we should keep the defense and rebounding of Deng and Taj. Not to mention the draft picks. I’m hoping the only trade we make is a steal of Rudy giving up JJ.

by BAB-Bass on Sep 11, 2010 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say Melo's inefficient,

just less efficient. 38 points on 23 shots is awesome, but this is FIBA play with shorter threes and worse opponents. And for what it’s worth, in the NBA Durant averages 30.2 on ~25.4 shots, Melo 28.2 on 26.3 shots. Durant gets 2 more points despite taking one less shot. That’s good, but it doesn’t seem like worlds apart, and definitely not the difference between being efficient and inefficient. Melo racks up slightly more assists, Durant an extra rebound. Durant turns the ball over a little more, but gets an extra half block per.

by dakoose on Sep 11, 2010 1:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Does anyone think Carmelo could possibly

Step his game up with the Bulls if he is traded…..I say this simply in regards he would seem to fit perfectly!……Also, it seems he feels he gets no respect as one of the top -tier scorers in the league and plays under the shadow of LeBum…… Could this possibly add to the rivalry of Heat ,Bulls……But I will say Jokeem the Dream, adds something not many players add I pray we get this done without giving up Jo, He is the main reason why alot of non-bulls fans respect the Bulls, his heart passion and will to win are unmeasurable, a key piece to any winning team

by chicagobullies on Sep 11, 2010 2:02 PM CDT up reply actions

For an 82 game season, 2 more points on 1 less shot is a big difference

Not to mention the difference in terms of FT shooting, 3pt shooting, TS% and eFG%. Durant is much more efficient.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Sep 11, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think any of those figures really make a difference.

Shouldn’t efficiency be describes as the production per possessions used up? That should be the end all be all. Melo also racks up some more assists and offensive boards while giving the ball away less. I still hesitate to say Durant is much more anything. He is more efficient, but I don’t think the gap is that wide. Though admittedly, I need to define what constitutes a significant difference in terms of efficiency.

by dakoose on Sep 11, 2010 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

This sounds like the panic around here when Derrick started slow this past season.

Admittedly, I was one of his biggest critics early on, as I doubted his injury was that big and thought he was just taking it easy. Turns out I was wrong, and he was really god down the stretch. Derrick will be fine, don’t throw out last season because of a FIBA tournament.

I really hope this doesn't affect his confidence going into the season.

The basketball world is a small one, and people will be in his ear about how he was the second best point guard on a team that was already the second best group of players.

Chris Sheridan just said that Rose took some wild shots in the lane and that’s why he didn’t play in the fourth. He only had one shot in the lane and he was fouled. The other two shots were on a break. Did I miss something?

by k21c on Sep 11, 2010 12:51 PM CDT reply actions

Sheridan has been dogging on Rose the entire tournament.

He’s had a few articles about how Rose shouldn’t be starting. This team is 8-0 with this starting lineup and they started off great in the first quarter. Why would they change the lineup because he missed a few shots?

This tournament is a glorified streetball game. Its unwatchable for the most part. The comments on here are ridiculous. WGAF how many points Rose scores?

Good win USA

As far as Rose goes, One Big thing people forget about is not only the role of Rose in this USA scheme, but The FIBA game itself, court is smaller, and basically 5 ppl can stand around the rim to roadblock driving and slashing plays. Which is Roses’ biggest asset. Rose is simply playing a role and working on his jumper during practices (to my knowledge). All this is is basically a bunch of exhibition games, where I believe he is simply working on tweaking some things, The rules and game of the FIBA play goes against everything Rose is as a player. I would not be too worried. Except I have yet to really see the much anticipated increase of a better j and 3. but practice makes perfect right?…..Well, as bulls’ fans, lets hope so

by chicagobullies on Sep 11, 2010 12:59 PM CDT reply actions

And I would say the only thing to take

From this tourney, would be the experience Asik has gained. Hopefully this will help prepare him, for training camp and a soon gained backup C role in the NBA

by chicagobullies on Sep 11, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Fine, but why is that not bothering Westbrook?

Plus, according to Rose, isn’t he supposed to be this knockdown shooter? He hasn’t been making shots either.

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 11, 2010 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

does anyone remember when derrick carried a shit team to the playoffs last year?

I’m pretty sure that was the same dude, so lets not worry how he does here. It’s a good experience for him and I think it’s showed him that he needs three point shot to truly be an elite guy. I bet he comes out strong in the final.

by NeilFunk69 on Sep 11, 2010 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Could be several things

But I am willing to bet Westbrook takes this personally as if he has something to prove, plus from waht I’ve seen most of Westbrooks’ points come off of turnovers or fastbreaks, and as I recall when the ganmes have came down to the nitty gritty, Rose has shown his true capability and gotten to the basket at times.

by chicagobullies on Sep 11, 2010 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

All-in-All

I would not take very much from these games, Rose will have the best players around him hes ever had. He is gaining much more experience with defending the pick and roll, and he will gain much more defensive knowledge this whole offseason with Thibs, Early up to Mid-Way through the season we will see the schemes and experience be put into play then I believe the pessimistic comments, if called for, can be accepted, but this is highly premature, and comes off as seemingly ignorant, when all factors are taken into consideration

by chicagobullies on Sep 11, 2010 1:37 PM CDT reply actions

Besides the obvious concern of free-throws

Does he seem to turn the ball of quite a bit?……God I wish we still had B-Miller, he could be a great mentor to Asik and help him get the best out of his abilities, and help him with some of his inabilities, He was very underrated (Maybe not by true BullFans) as a pivitol part in Noah’s success last year

by chicagobullies on Sep 11, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Unless he's fairly thick-headed

he’ll realize the game is called differently in the US. He’s horizontal foot speed is damn impressive for his size. It’s the lack of explosivity that’s bothersome.

Man – if he only had a jump shot.

i think its hard to get used to the differences between the way the games are called

i can see him getting called for a lot of moving screens and hands in the back on defense. Plus he tries to contest everything which will lead to more fouls.

Just that the defense were playing off him too much and came with Gordon because of it

he expressed concern over Derrick’s play yet everything he said about how Derrick will be used tomorrow was pure conjecture.

by dakoose on Sep 11, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

He said Rose sat because he was shooting poorly

If we’re being honest here, Westbrook has looked better than Rose in this tournament. Rose hasn’t shot well in these FIBA games. Everyone got excited over Rose’s supposed improved jumper and new 3 pointer, but I don’t see any improvement at all.

by Stay Chisel on Sep 11, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Westbrook has had some really nice stretches,

but he also has played a ton of minutes against scrubs. If coach K believes Westbrook is a better option, then he would play him. Personally, I think Gordon should play with Rose and Billups should run the offense with the second unit, but I’m not coaching this team.

by dakoose on Sep 11, 2010 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

No question that Westbrook has played against second stringers

So the level of comp is not the same as what Rose has faced. Still, Rose’s shot hasn’t looked that good this tournament. I was hoping for some marked improvement and just have not seen it. On the plus side, I think Rose has played some good D and I like how he handled the ball in transition.

Did you see him get poked/hit in the eye??

It was pretty hard.

Now I once had an elbow to the eye and saw double for the rest of the game and kept playing, but that’s me… ;) (Turned out later a bone behind my eye was broken. Air bubbled out of my eye-socket when i blew my nose. It was quite cool.)

by BAB-Bass on Sep 11, 2010 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I did

I just think that they were too quick to let the other player shoot the FT and he seemed fine afterwards. He was given an opportunity and he capitalized on it without anyone anyone telling him to take a fall…I’m just saying.

Still think it was wrong though.

Wow. Kudos to you. I would have stopped playing if that happened to me. Glad it wasn’t serious.

Cousins is good but he's no mana from heaven.

by kingme on Sep 11, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

It's possible there was SOME acting involved.

In spite of good looking form on his FT’s his percentage is surprisingly low so there are reasons to speculate whether it was a tactical ploy. However after watching it again in slow motion and seeing the hard direct hit to the (open) eye, I’m confident there was no acting involved.

He didn’t play the rest of the game, though, so we don’t really know. However you don’t need two fully functioning eyes to run onto the court celebrating after the game… ;P

Thanks, man. Must have been the adrenaline. I wouldn’t have kept playing if it happened today, I’ll tell you that. My work is highly dependent on proper vision.

Agreed

I still think Rose is awesome, but this is also a situation where having no ego hurts him. Apparently he needs his entire team, and city for that matter, to tell him it’s ok to be really good. He doesn’t know when to defer, and when to score, and every time he misses a shot, you can see how frustrated he gets. He just needs to play the damn game.

“The zone, you know the zone, I thought with Andre [Iguodala] and Derrick out there, they were playing off of those two guys. So it became more difficult for Chauncey to get a look, or Kevin Durant. And Russell can really penetrate against any defense,” Krzyzewski explained. "So you had that, and Eric has been our best shooter outside of Kevin Durant, and Chauncey at the point in that situation is something that we talked about as a team and as a coaching staff.

“So we went to that, and that was a good thing to go to.”

Aren’t we supposed to have the guy that can penetrate against any defense?

I think the problem is, and this was mentioned in the other thread, Derrick is scared to go in there. Rose wants to do his circus layups where he puts the ball in without being touched, but he can’t in FIBA play. Whereas Westbrook is just storming in like a freight train, and dunking on people or getting to the free throw line.

I still think Rose should probably be playing over Billups, who apparently thinks that this tournament is all about his old ass. Obviously Coach K is afraid to bench his “leader” though.

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 11, 2010 6:04 PM CDT reply actions

this is the problem we've had with rose since he was drafted

for some reason he likes using his floaters and trick shots instead of muscling his way in like he should be able to do.
this is why we’ve always complained about his ability to get to the line. he doesnt put himself in position to have fouls called. westbrook does a good job of muscling his way into the defense and drawing contact and for some reason rose just likes to shy away from it..

from now on instead of saying "go fuck yourself" im gunna just say "go join the heat"

by sin on Sep 11, 2010 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

And he led the NBA in FG% at close range last year. So, his floaters and trick shits obviously work for him. It's a legit skill to pull those off.

Certain people are making it seem like guards can only score via layup, 3-pointer, and free throws.

instead, he should be taking less jump-shots

by Stacey_Is_King on Sep 11, 2010 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

well thats what he shouldve been doing last few years

this year things may change with boozer in the fold.
boozer is going to be working inside alot. although boozer likes to take jumpshots too so who knows.
my guess is we’ll see alot more jump shots from rose than we’d like this year.

from now on instead of saying "go fuck yourself" im gunna just say "go join the heat"

by sin on Sep 11, 2010 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

No, that's what he should have done on a competent team with a real coach.

He’s going to take more jump shots than drives, that’s what guards do. The key is for those shots to actually come within a context of a play rather than dribbling around and hoisting up shit before the buzzer.

I want the floaters, free throws, 3-pointers, etc. He has to have it all to take that next step. Hopefully with Boozer around Rose doesn’t have to be such a high-volume shooter.

figuring it all out, and how it all ‘fits’ is probably one of the biggest parts of developing into a great player

by Stacey_Is_King on Sep 11, 2010 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah Westbrook does just really fly in there without any regard for his body or what-not.

Rose had 2 freak injuries last year thanks to Howard and I’d rather he stay injury free then go to the hole with “something to prove” and fuck himself up.

by Playboy_BullV on Sep 11, 2010 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

its not about having something to prove

its about scoring efficiently. we’re not asking rose to throw his body in there without control. its about get contact at the right angles like lebron/wade etc do in mid air when they drive. squaring your body up so you can take a hit and get contact. no ones asking rose to run full speed head on into dwight (which is basically how he got injured)

all we need is derrick to draw contact. cp3 is barely the physical specimen rose is and he isnt afraid to get inside and score/ draw contact. deron williams does a great job of draw contact as well. rose really imo was too shy his rookie year. which led to developing that floater which he fell in love with last year and just totally made him refuse to drive in for contact more often

from now on instead of saying "go fuck yourself" im gunna just say "go join the heat"

by sin on Sep 11, 2010 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Getting fouled is a skill. When done properly, there’s really not much injury risk.

by Juiceboxjerry on Sep 11, 2010 8:03 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

i mean theres injury risks in playing the sport period.
you could land on someones foot shooting jump shots.
you could have freak accidents like shaun livingston making a layup.
theres injury risk no matter what.
but you just have to be smart about it and minimize risk and theres ways to get fouled without risking your body every time
