Team U.S.A. vs. Iran, Open Thread
On ESPN right now, I'm sure you can find it on ESPN3 as well. Considering it's already halftime and nobody's bothered to make a thread yet, obviously there isn't a ton of interest in this game. The U.S. are expected to win big, and it appears like they're on their way to doing just that (U.S.A. up 42-28 at half). But for Bulls fans the interesting story line continues to be Rose and how well he does or does not play. Sadly, today looks like another sleepy game for Derrick. Simply shadowing his player on defense instead of trying to be disruptive, expending way too much energy with crossovers and dribbles to get past a guy that he should just blow by on offense, and being entirely too willing to hand the ball off to Billups after he gets the ball past halfcourt and hide in the corner.
I know most people will give me all kinds of shit for making so much out of Rose's play in this type of situation, but this is pretty disappointing to me. I was hoping to see a confident player, scoring the ball and making plays, hungry to prove himself on a National stage. But so far, other than a game or two, he's looked tired and sloppy, and I wonder if Coach K might be considereing making a move with that starting lineup. Or he could just make me look like an idiot and go crazy for the rest of the tournament once the games become really interesting. I'm hoping for the latter.

Reserve the shit talking for Billups.
He looks like shit out there, same goes for Iguodala and Odom.

Yea, Odom can't make a fucking lay up
and Billups thinks this is his Kobe moment
Superteams suck.

Well, he's probably done for the day
Nice finish to the game for him. Hopefully his play at the end there will give him some confidence. He looked like he was really reaching the last few games. Wouldn’t hurt if someone could kidnap Billups for a week or two, considering he’s kidnapped the offense.
Superteams suck.
I don't really like the starting lineup.
Rose and Durant are fine, but I’d rather play Gordon, Love and Gay beside them. Iguodala doesn’t do much for me. He can play D, but is useless when they’re not running the break. Odom doesn’t do much and like you said, Billups kills the offense.
Rose should be the only PG out there when he’s on the floor, as he’s the only pure PG on the team. Westbrook(especially), Curry and Billups don’t run the floor well.
Totally agree
Him and Billups are clashing right now. They just need to make one guy the main pg. Use the other off the bench. If Rose was starting with Gordon, we’d be money
Superteams suck.

Christ
Westbrook is so bad, I don’t think he’s really even trying.
I think it's the opposite
He’s trying so hard it’s making him suck
Superteams suck.

So..what was the verdict in this game?
I saw bits of pieces but my internet cut out during most of the game and I didnt see 1 Rose highlight =(

terrible
11 pts, 5-6 fg, 2st, 2reb, 1ast, 2TO. They might just leave him in Turkey considering how bad he is playing.

I'm guessing that you're taking a shot at me, which is understandable
But in fairness, this was absolutely a tale of two halves. And I stand behind what I wrote regarding the first half. He looked slow and disinterested on both ends of the floor. Maybe Coach K or one of his teammates talked some sense into him, because he looked a lot better in the second half. Hope he keeps it up
Superteams suck.

i wasn't really taking a shot anyone
just making fun of the worrying. I didn’t see the game, so I have no idea how he played.

That line's not all that impressive considering he was playing against a guy who was 5-11 and very limited athletically.
The Chicago Bulls hate shooting ability.

It's tough to judge him in these games,
and in all honesty I’m not trying to learn anything from this tournament, I just enjoy watching Derrick play. If Iran’s team were in the NBA and the Bulls were facing them, I have no doubt Derrick would have come out and dropped a at least 25-30 points, but Derrick’s not the type of guy to try and take over when he has other capable players around him. He’s done it when he’s had to, but he’s not there trying to impress anybody, whereas Russell Westbrook is.
you're right. he should have gone for 50
i wasn’t saying the line was impressive, i was just giving Belize the line. The line is pretty typical of what he has done in each of these games. If that gives you reason to worry, go ahead and worry.

No one's been impressive at all

I saw T2 at Walgreens in Deerfield he’s tall. if you’re wondering what his grocery list included: magnums, french vanilla ice cream and a 20 oz sprite

I didnt see see rose play today
but jbj i gotta agree with your summary of this tourney so far. I would love to see d rose be the man on this team, even the second scorer but thats just not what he thinks his role is. D rose seems to have too much respect for billups and treats him like he is the go to guy in the half court. There are few guys in the nba that would take the backseat to anyone let alone chauncey billups and rose seems to be one of them. I hate it but thats just how d rose rolls. When he’s on the bulls though he’s gonna have to take over and he will.
Yep
I LOVE Rose, so don’t get me wrong, but I’m just wondering how far this super humble act can take him. We’ve never really seen a superstar, 1a kind of guy, with this type of personality. It’s one of the things I love about Rose, but also one of the things that bugs me. Can you think of one great player that would be content with kinda hanging in the background and giving the team over to guys like Billups and Durant? I know this is Team USA, and it’s supposed to be really team oriented, but still…
Superteams suck.

durant almost did that same thing, only the team and coaching staff kept telling him to take
over, so he did. and durant is a pretty great player. im pretty ok with him playing as a 3rd banana in the starting unit and working on non-scoring things like defense and rebounding. so far, rose has the second highest DRB% of perimeter players on the team, the third highest block percentage of perimeter players and the second highest steal percentage among perimeter players. id say hes doing fine.

his ORB% has been very, very low though. someone needs to tell him about Orbs and creating
turnovers, how they lead to easy points and will make his life a lot simpler and make him look better.

most teams don't like their point guards going for offensive rebounds
i’m guessing TEAM USA isn’t any different.
by Basketball Smurf on Sep 1, 2010 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions
sure, but sebastian pruti did a post talking about good orbing PGs and he pointed
out that guards like rondo and westbrook get around this because they are so fast, they can hang around and see if they have a chance at the offensive board, and still recover defensively if they cant get the rebound. why couldnt rose do this too?

Rose isn't the coach
Coach K seems fine with Billups “leading”
Would you rather have him rocking the boat on the national team?
Hey, the Iranian coach agrees with me (I think):
“For us, we learned a lot from watching the Brazil game,” Iran coach Veselin Matic said. “American team have a problem with the one-on-one game. They can’t really play one-on-one. (Kevin) Durant, (Chauncey) Billups need to speed up to play one-on-one, but they are a team that is not under control. They are not really good in the one-on-one game. Today, (Derrick) Rose didn’t penetrate to the basket, and they don’t have a post-up player.”
Superteams suck.
Of course, he said that we don't have good iso players
so.
Go Rockets/Nets[CDR]/Bucks[Jennings]!
I think one thing we are looking past
is that it is nearly impossible to bring out everyones potential on a team who has been together for a few weeks. D rose has been a good teammate on this team and has earned his way to a starting spot as he passed up rondo and westbrook and even has moved billups to shooting guard. The more i look at it the more im pleased with how he has done this summer, but if he isnt the alpha male on the bulls this year then we can really start bitchin more.
anybody listen to Bill Simmons' podcast
he had some good talks about rose vs rondo..even with his homerism

this one around the 16:30 marks he starts gettin into US basketball. He talks abit about Melo trades and he brushes off the Deng for Melo trade. I think he was geeked about Artest + Vujajic (?) + Bynum for Melo + K Mart

I think the way Rose has played compares to what former team USA point guards did in similar minutes. His turnovers are higher, his shooting percentage is better, his scoring is about on par with what they did. I think Rose is just doing what Coach K asks.

Ya I looked at some old box scores too
Rose is pretty much on par with what many PG and many other star players have done in world championships and olympic type settings. Efficient offensive games seem to be the best you can hope for. Guys just don’t drop 30 that often and many times not even 20. I think we can begin to judge Rose’s progress once the NBA season starts :)

Derrick is great and seems improved in everything but playing off the ball.
He has gotten much better at getting into the passing lanes, his shot selection has been strong, his range is improving and he is just doing his job. He is giving up a lot of TOs, but when you are the starting point on a team that hasn’t played much together, never mind with the weird FIBA ball, I am not going to hold it against him. Even other players seem to consider him the number two guy, I don’t know folks, this just has me excited for him to play with his own team.
