ASIK impressive in World CUP

Omer Asik has been playing really good in the world cup. Ive only seen him play against Greece and he was impressive. He knows how to play the pick and roll and puts really good screens. I really think he could be a good contributor and play about 10 solid minutes a game. Defensively he can really block shots and stop penetrations. Here are his stats. Id like to know if anyone has been able to see the other games and what you guys think of him. His only real concern is his free throw shooting which is not bad, its terrible.

I can shoot with my left nut...

and make more than 4 out of 15 free throws.

Wait you can shoot with your left nut?

That’s impressive on its own. Let alone the fact that you can make them. I don’t even care that you can make them. You must do kegels. Oops wrong sex organ.

hell yea my left nut can shoot...

unfortunately it prefers to shoot long 2’s rather than take a step back to shoot the 3-ball.

I haven't seen him play yet

but his box score numbers look pretty good. Then again so do Hamed Haddadi’s, who is putting up 22 and 10 with 3.7 blocks a game. But Haddadi is the best player on his country’s team, so the scoring is relative.

i swear this is true: haddadi looked pretty good in limited minutes in memphis when they actually

tried to use him.

He had some BIG dunks today.

At the start of the 3rd quarter he drove from the high post and dunked with his right. The next play, he did the same thing to his left, with his left hand, but he was fouled (he missed both foul shots.

He had other dunks too, he looks great cutting to the hoop, receiving the pass and going up strong. He did that off the pick and roll and through designed plays.

FYI to all...

Turkey plays China 1PM CST on NBA TV.

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

i think Turkey is one of the more dangerous teams

they have 2 good big men (Asik and Ersan) their guards don’t turn it over, and they have hedo and illyasova just launching 3s. Their zone defense was really good against Greece today. And with the home crowd – I’d rather someone other than the U.S. has to knock them out. Although that would make for a pretty good final game.

Ilyasova has to have a lot of Jordanesque shooting nights

for Turkey to be a contender.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

Just for the record

you were completely wrong about Turkey.

lol

That’s the understatement of the tournament.

I’m very impressed

about Asik

I think he has a pretty good b-ball IQ, but I thought he would be bigger. Right now he looks a little weak to me. I’m not so sure he beats out Kurt Thomas for the back up center position.

by Basketball Smurf on Aug 31, 2010 6:33 PM CDT reply actions

Not Bad

considering the amount of minutes his playing, i don’t think he will back up Noah, unless Thomas gets hurt or Thomas plays real bad……………just keep him off the free throw line and he will be fine or have him stop watching Shaq and D-Howard shoot free throws

Make learning underhand freethrows

a prerequisite for his call up to the Chicago Bulls.

by leeac on Sep 1, 2010 12:25 AM CDT reply actions

so true

it’s incredibly easy to get good rotation, direction and touch. for any sub-50% shooter, the improved arc that necessarily(?) follows would boost them to around 60%, even if they involve poor rhythm.

I saw him shoot two in a row

and swish both. Form was good.

(Yeah, you don’t get much smaller sample size than that, but still)

by BAB-Bass on Sep 5, 2010 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree about his form

Not perfect or anything, but certainly good enough to not be such a horrific FT shooter. I think it is something mental, personally.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Sep 5, 2010 4:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I saw him swish two recently. In the same trip to the line.

They looked good, like they should be going in. Not like some Shaq weirdness where he gets lucky time-to-time.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Painted Area on Asik vs Greece

you should be following this blog all championships, btw.

Omer Asik was a finishing machine once again. Asik finished strong with a few dunks off roll/cuts and finished thru contact to draw the foul a few times. Last year, we noticed his ability to re-adjust his body on the move and did a few times today. Defensively, he changed some shots and even blocked a Spanoulis 3pt. attempt helping on pick/roll. Though, the FT-line woes still exist—2-for-6 from the line. Omer put up 12 pts (5-of-6), 6 rebs & 2 blks in 17 mins.

SOLID GAME AGAINST FRANCE

10pts, 5rebounds, 2/2 from the line.
All this in 17 minutes.

I insist he looks really solid and he should be able to transalte his game to the Nba really quick.
