Around SBN: Josh Hamilton's Unique Public Statement On His Addiction

Post-game: USA barely survives test from Brazil

That was a fun watch, though the scoring dried up completely on both sides in the 4th, Team USA managed to hang on for the 70-68 victory over Brazil. Especially crazy final possession, with Brazil down two, a very close and-1 rimming out, followed by a missed FT (I'm like Coach K, I don't know all their names) and then one of the few well-done intentionally missed FTs I've ever seen, but Brazil couldn't convert on the extra chance.

Derrick Rose had some great highlight finishes for himself, but never quite looked comfortable running the offense. And his defense today was pretty terrible. He was beat on the first two possessions and Brazil really was working him over on the pick/roll. Obviously it's a team scheme and not fair to Rose to be singled out, but it was a bad day on that end of the floor for him.

he did have a nice backcourt steal

I didn’t remember any others, they forced a lot of turnovers as a team as Brazil was eager to run too, a few times one team would get a steal and give it right back.

Barbosa had 4 steals too

And isn’t really a great defender….

I smell FIBA.

Actually that Vinicious guy totally found holes in KD’s D, it seemed every time KD took a D play off that guy scored.

Still thank God we had KD, who’s amazing.

but he was still clearly the second best player on the team without getting many plays called for him.

This was the third game in 3 days, I am sure they will look much better after some rust.

Also, I am excited about Asik but I really wish we had Splitter.

that’s cool. And if you put him up side-by-side with Westbrook when he’s in, you can tell Rose’s superior offensive game.

2 Much Turnovers

Durant had a good game, lead the team in points, rebounds and also turnovers 8……….Rose, Billlups and Oden each had 3, but 8 by Durant is way too many………..the game shouldn’t have been that close, if team usa would have protected the basketball

Iguoldala is a black hole

He tries to play Deng’s mid range game but is even more suited to attack the basket, it’s a problem….so he’s a black hole.
Odom’s shots were mostly off of D breakdowns, Odom just had one of those where is he kind of games that frustrate Laker fans….

Without KD shooting we’d have been killed. I see no issues there.

And I thought once Billups became aggressive he really helped us take control of that game. Yesterday was a game where we needed Billups.

watch the game! :-p

basically, it wasn’t Rose’s guy doing the scoring, but he was breaking down the initial defense pretty consistently. Either to a rolling Splitter or usually to a 3-point shooter. All those shooters for Brazil went very cold in the second half, plus it’s not like they were getting completely wide open, the US has enough athleticism to close out and rotate effectively even when beat.

he's gotten leagues better than he was the last 2 years.

he’s actually in a defensive stance now, he pressures the ball, and he’s going for steals. he never did any of these things in his first two season. people seem to forget that basically all point guards are going to get torched from time to time, that’s just the way the game is. he definitely got lost on some screens today, but the help defense was completely non-exist, and lamar odom was playing center. the team defense was all-around terrible. i thought rose was fine on that end.

I thought Derrick looked pretty terrible out there today to be honest. He was very loose with the ball, lots of dumb turnovers,

and he got blown by on the defensive end a bunch of times. Just a poor outing all the way around. On the other hand, everyone on USA looked pretty crappy and the only one who looked really good was Durant and even he had 8 TOs.

Every time I watch Team USA I get excited about Rose and then get a little bummed out that we don’t have Durant because he’s so much better. The real shitty thing about it is that if Stern hadn’t passed the 1 year rule for college, Durant and Oden likely would have entered the draft that year and we’d have drafted Durant instead of LMA/Tyrus.

The Chicago Bulls hate shooting ability.

by fundamentallysound on Aug 30, 2010 6:41 PM CDT reply actions

It's something that is largely overlooked but the Oden Durant draft really should have been the year before it actually happened and we would have been in on it.

Instead we had a #2 pick in one of the weaker drafts of the era. We should have drafted Brandon Roy, but still, Durant > Roy.

The Chicago Bulls hate shooting ability.

by fundamentallysound on Aug 30, 2010 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

That's true, but who's to say we draft Durant at two even if we had the pick

Durant wouldn’t have had that amazing college season under his belt, so Pax and his “Only draft players from winning programs” philosophy might have passed on him.

Kinda like how, I believe, if we had the number one pick the year Howard was drafted (we had third and took BG), we would have almost definitely taken Okafor, which would’ve been a disaster. You never know how things would’ve worked out even if Durant did come out that year.

Exactly

I think he still would’ve went for Oden, because Oden had that insane hype coming out of high school. He would’ve been crucified if he passed. But with Durant, he wasn’t hyped really at all. It was only after he dominated college that he started getting all that love. I kinda doubt Pax takes him at two, but I guess we’ll never know

Oden would have gone first (he was the consensus #1 even in HS) and the Bulls had the second overall pick. It was screwup proof for Pax.

Durant was very hyped coming into college. He actually beat out Oden for MVP honors in a major high school allstar game. I think it was the McDonald’s All-American game.

We do have the ability to get one

By having Rose improve to be top 5, he still doesn’t have to better than Durant.

We also signed a bunch of players who could be vital trade assets in the future.

Is it likely that the Bulls will have a top 5 player? No, but it’s not likely for about 27 other teams either.

by tuluse on Aug 31, 2010 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Derrick Rose will almost certainly never be a top 5 player in the league for reasons I pointed out above.

LBJ, Dwight, CP3, and Durant are all going to be around and be better than him for the vast majority of his career. Tyreke Evans played Derrick to a draw this year even though Derrick had a year of experience on him. Then there’s guys like Blake Griffin and DeMarcus Cousins (he’s going to be a beast) that are lurking around the corner, not to mention guys like John Wall, Harrison Barnes, and other freakish prodigies that are bound to come out in the next couple years.

The Chicago Bulls hate shooting ability.

It's unlikely, not impossible

Isn’t it even guaranteed that Paul will be the same after surgery?

Also, Rose had a definite edge on Evans, higher eFG% and ast%, with lower TOV%, and higher USG. Evans might improve faster than Rose, he might not. It’s not really something to worry about until it happens.

Whole Team was Sloppy

Derrick didn’t look great on the offensive end but I think the whole team was out of sync. Durant had 7 turnovers. It’s what you get when guys never play together.

I am disappointed at how horrible Derrick has been defensively. I know it’s nice that he’s adding some range to his game, but my God he is atrocious on the other end of the court.

There is nothing being run out there. Can I get a pick and roll PLEASE. Also, I don’t like this point guard heavy team that’s going on. It creates leadership issues. If you like Billups on the floor that much to start and finish games, then fucking start him at the one, and bring Rose off the bench, and vice versa. There needs to be more clear cut roles. I’d much rather see Gordon in the starting lineup, with Rose, then Billups and Westbrook off the bench. Plus they should have kept Mayo instead of Steph Curry or Westbrook. It’s a bit of a mess. just finished watching team usa play

- i think a bigger problem than the 2 point guards, is the no big man. Team USA should play pick and roll, but Odom and Durant aren’t really pick and roll players. Odom was especially bad today on pick and rolls. He can’t shoot and he doesn’t know how to roll to the basket. Bad combo.

- Along those lines, Iggy and Odom are zeroes on offense. I haven’t been impressed with Iggy, Gay or Granger as the teams small forwards. Can one of these guys put the ball on the floor and take 2 dribbles without bouncing it off their leg?

- Odom D is a plus – when he’s hustling. When he isn’t, please sit him down. Chandler/Love/Odom should be getting equal time at least.

- I thought the entire team played like it was game 70 of the NBA season. And Team USA depends on energy. Their whole thing is pushing the ball, getting turnovers and running. Its hard to get turnovers when you are running through the motions.

- Love should play more. I’m not as big as fan as some here, but he can rebound and he can score which is more than what Odom and Chandler are providing.

- Tiago Splitter looked nice. Has a bunch of skills, can score, rebound, defend. San Antonio has a nice player going forward.

I'm struggling to figure out why Love isn't starting and getting the most minutes at center

It would have let everyone shift into a more natural position. Odom at 4, Iggy at 2. Rose, Iggy, Durant, Odom should still be plenty athletic for running.

Also, Billips almost lost this game for the team. I was shouting at the TV for him to give the ball to Durant or Rose (the only consistent scorers for this team), but sure enough he kept it and made a mess of things. That’s out veteran presence.

Chandler really disappointed me with his defense. He looked really nervous, and it led to fouls, when he it seemed like he had the advantage. He should have just calmed down and forced Splitter to beat him.

by tuluse on Aug 31, 2010 1:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Iggy at the 2 is pretty lackluster from the shooting department. Odom hasn't been able to knock down shots. Durant, Rose, and Love

would be the only real shooting. OTOH, that line up would be huge and would dominate the glass and in the defensive backcourt even more than we’ve seen Team USA do already.

by fundamentallysound on Aug 31, 2010 1:28 AM CDT up reply actions

It's not like Billups is helping by going 1/7 from 3 point range

If we really wanted shooting, Curry or Gordon would be out there.

Basically I really hate the way Billups has played and I want him gone, while Love has been the best player off the bench, so this swap seems like it would require the least amount of adjustment.

billups fucking baffles me

if hes hot i dont mind him jacking up shots but he clearly wasnt and it was driving me nuts until about the 3rd quarter where there was a tiny stretch when he decided “hey my shots not falling how about i drive and penetrate and try to draw contract/ dish it out for for easy points” and then thats when usa kinda made their big run in the third. and then once we had the lead by like 4-6 he decided okay time to go back to jacking up shots.

ive probably watched 150 nuggets games since billups went to denver, and i have

to say, this is pretty typical of his style. because he goes to the line so often you might think he drives a lot but he only drives like 20% of the time. the rest are outside shots (often 3s, which he usually makes at a nice clip).

It was all one play

Billups driving and using a crafty head fake to continue his penetration. He drew the 4th foul on Huertas. After that Brazil had nobody to run their offense.

Right then I would have pulled Billups and inserted Gordon. Let Gordon get his 3 working since it’s not like his defense is necessary with Huertas over there waving towels.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

Love's been great in the tournament

But his D is pretty atrocious. I think Coach K tried him in the first half and he was even more exposed playing against a quality big like Splitter.

I just hope we use this to learn because I bet we’ll be playing an aggressive Scola lead team at some point, and Luis Scola is a much better player than he is in Houston’s system…..

Against quality bigs, the finally healthy Chandler is an asset to this team. Odom’s perhaps our second best post defender, and he really has improved there, but he needs to have another defender alongside him when we play a quality big, and Iggy/Love aren’t it defensively.

IMHO, Rose’s defense on the PnR was not too bad. The fundamental problem was defense on the screener (Splitter) was terrible. And they were often using the pick and slip", with Splitter being excellent at the slip. Rose could belly-up but that would have been VERY difficult to do given the schemes that Brazil was running, and the personnel that they had.

im so jealous of the spurs and their luck sometimes

td on the decline. playoff team stuck in the middle and guess what they get in the offseason
james anderson stolen at 20th
and splitter finally coming over

like wow. and splitter came at like a scrub price. just ridiculous.
if duncan can do for splitter what david robinson did for him then damn. we got another team to look out for this year

from now on instead of saying "go fuck yourself" im gunna just say "go join the heat"

spurs are really lucky as heck

the one year robinson goes down, they draft duncan. they have one of the best coaches in the league, got ginobili at pick #57, parker at pick #28. just insane.

having euro scouting isn't really luck

they were also proactive in signing guys to extensions, which was a risk but it turned out they underpaid Manu and Parker compared to most.

keeping splitter wasn't luck

they had plenty of good offers for him.

They were just patient. I loved Splitter that year and wanted the Bulls to take him (or trade down to take him)

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Some of the negativity around here is a bit overboard.

Rose put up the second best numbers in the game, and when compared with Igoudala, Billups and Odom he looked like an absolute genius (I thought Durant looked pretty stupid at times as well).

We have a tendency to go over each Rose performance with a fine tooth comb, often times at price of understanding the context. This was the third game in three days and everyone looked like it; Coach Ks rotation and offense was stagnant and really put the team in the position it was in. Just step back and look at the situation; with no real inside scorer and an offense that is almost entirely ISO, how do you expect someone with a game like Rose’s, especially beside another point jacking up a ton of shots, to look great?

He still needs to improve his play off the ball (hopefully Thibs will get that into his head) and his defensive lapses leave a lot to be desired, but I remember his rookie year when he and Gordon could let teams back into games purely through their terrible defense.

Yeah, we have the guy who will be the 12th man on the Redeem team, but…well…whatever, that is fucking sick.

Coach K is an absolutely terrible coach for this type of team. FIBA play is ALL pick and roll. He doesn't understand the pick and roll game at all

and has no plan for defending it. He doesn’t coach against it in college and he doesn’t run it either. His college offenses ignore big men and he’s done the same with this team. Kevin Love playing as few minutes as he has played, especially given how well he’s played when he has played, is an absolute travesty. Fire Coach K.

Coach K was a jag during 08, but that team was just absolutely stacked to overcome for his decisions.

He has the job because he’s good at delivering the pro-America sentiment and people respect his name. It has nothing to do with basketball acumen, or else D’Antoni would have had the job.

I was wondering this myself

I wonder if the Bulls whiffing on the top free-agents mean that we need to judge Rose against the very best. We read (and slobber) over Rose apparently being some kind of humble wonderful alternative to the evil in Miami, but he has to also be as good as them, right? Not exactly fair but I’ll blame the Bulls for that expectation :-p

I was just pointing out the defense because that’s my concern with Rose going into the season, and I wanted to see some improvement and didn’t. Doesn’t mean he won’t be better next season, or that it even matters that much if he’s studly on offense.

Rose is playing the pick and roll

like it’s Tyrus and Noah taking the guard. Well it’s Lamar Odom right now so Rose has to chase the guard and let the help take the rolling big man.

These FIBA PGs can’t shoot. They’re a bunch of Jason Kidd clones with lackluster defense. Making them shoot off the pick and roll is the lowest percentage outcome they can take.

This is a good articulation of my depression over Durant's obvious superiority over Derrick. Derrick will likely never be a top 5 player

because for most of his career he will have Durant, LeBron, CP3, Dwight ahead of him, plus guys like Wade, etc. who will hang around for a good chunk of his career. Plus whatever young superstud might be out there ready to drop on the scene like Durant.

yeah, but realistically, neither is OKC unless harden makes a leap.

so heres why i dont care about durant:
1) There are 2 contenders. thats it. for everyone else the best thing you can do is have a team thats fun to watch.
2) i watched about 50 OKC games this year, and i dont think kevin durant is a fun player to watch. i hate it when guys use that many possessions and dont pass. and when he does pass, hes just as likely to screw it up as be successful. and hes also not a fun athlete to watch. with his weird body he looks like he should be, but he isnt. at least, thats my opinion.

Some here already think he's as good or on track to surpass Wade, so it might be fair to compare him against the best.

Personally, I think it’s stupid. He still needs to compare to Deron Williams, let alone Chris Paul or Dwyane Wade.

none

The FIBA refs appear to let a lot of step out screens go. If their legs are straight but they step out it’s legal. If they move their hips out and bend the leg it’s illegal. Both are illegal in the NBA.

I too was concerned about Asik’s changing ends speed. It looked coached since nobody on his team complained at all.

this is a good post.

I watched part (but not all) of it. Yay classes starting.
But anyway.
Omer looks like he will fulfill expectations for his “scrub minutes” role. He’s not going to be a superstar, but with some coaching and development, he will probably be an above-average backup, with good D, horrible free throw shooting, and mediocre offensive IQ and energy.

With the FIBA travelling rules and the slippery logos on the courts

I almost think 4.3 TOs per 40 is pretty good considering how often he handles the ball.
Almost.

Fran Fraschilla

made the point that Rose didn’t seem like he could get a good handle on the ball. After he pointed it out I remember noticing that his dribbling appeared uncharacteristically. Maybe that’s the reason he didn’t attack the rim as much? In any event, when Rose does nothing on offense, his defense is definitely more vulnerable to criticism. I didn’t mind him on defense for this game as much as I did for the Spain game. He actually had a semblance of a plan (gamble on steals), which is more than I can usually say. He should have played off that Brazillian PG though. Whatever his name was, he was only looking create off the pick and roll, and not to shoot jumpers at all.

Problem I see is Iguoldala is completely outmatched

The last few games. I know he’s not a 4, but he REALLY is not a 4.

He forces too many shots, he seems incapable of team ball. He’s good at defending transition but is often lost in defending set plays, and having a whole in the pivot d is really hurting htis team especially when pared with skilled bigs like Brazil.

I’d hope if we face another big skilled pivot team that we’d slide Odom to the 4 spot and start Chandler. Chandler’s the only real tried and true lock down defender on the team and I felt the move for only a few minutes in the 3rd is what helped change the game.

Hell I think Rudy Gay is totally outplaying the oddly more popular because he plays in a bigger market Iguoldala. I used to think Deng and Iggy were like peanut butter and jelly as a comparison, pretty darn equal, where Iggy’s got the flashy athleticism, and Deng’s got the decent mid range shooting…..but wow watching Iguoldala these 6 games, it’s become apparent to me that he has been a big reason why Philly’s been so crappy. I know Collins is going to force feed him even more—perhaps in the hope of bringing up his value for a trade—but I say steer clear….

Just finished watching Turkey vs Greece

Asik was pretty huge down the stretch. Big rebounds, attacking the rim, really active on the offensive glass. He could be really good.

It looks like he must be out of shape, it’s strategy, or the knee might be bothering him. The turkish coach played him for the first 6 minutes of the 1st quarter. He was very effective. He basically either blocks shots, forces really bad shots, or passes out to the perimeter. Then he was pulled. He didn’t return until the 4th quarter.

In the 4th he was just as good. Had to dunks in traffic. Almost threw one down on Greek Shaq. He took the ball at the free throw line, faked a pass right, then dribbled left twice, gathered for a left hand dunk. He missed, but he got hit pretty hard with no call. It was a make up call for some contact the officials called on Greek Shaq the possession before.

Here’s the good news. Asik has moves with left hand AND his right hand. He can dribble with both. He takes some long strides. If he took shorter steps his handles and his hand size make him look like he could finish like Amare at the rim if he’s got a player like Rose pulling his big and Rose’s defensive assignment with Rose an actual 3pt threat. He appears very athletic. It doesn’t look like he’s had any big man coaching. He has athletic gifts that you can’t teach. Mainly, he likes to go strong to the rim with both hands. If he just palms the ball with one hand he’s going to get hacked like crazy. If he can get that Rik Smits one hand attack going he’ll live at the line. Of course that’s where he needs a ton of work.

His FT shooting form is good. His follow through is not so good. His misses are clanks left and right, but rarely long or short.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

I would like to start the SVG for USA campaign.

If we ran the pick and roll for Rose with Love or Rudy Gay and had Durant, Billups and/or Gordon/Curry around the perimeter, we would be blowing teams out and this would easily play to both Rose and Westbrook’s strengths.
