U.S. vs. Spain (Exhibition) - Open Thread

Game will be live on ESPN 3 at 2pm Central time.

They struggled against Lithuania in the first half of yesterday's game and I hope the jitters are all gone. Time to play much better offensively early and maintain the pressure defensively. As for Rose, let us all relax. Way too many judgments on a guy who still had 3 assists in 11 minutes. I prefer to trust what Coach K. is doing during these Exhibition games (which are still being regarded as training camp time to team U.S.A.)

Doubt it.

This has been pretty pathetically biased so far. They’re not even being discreet about it.

by Juiceboxjerry on Aug 22, 2010 3:06 PM CDT up reply actions

that is the dilemna

i think Curry is a better shooter. But Gordon is bigger and more able to withstand the physical international play. I just don’t like how every time Gordon is passed the ball, he has to look to see if he has a shot. I don’t know if its because he is on the bubble of making the team or what, but it can hurt the flow of the offense. Curry’s shot selection isn’t much better though.

by Basketball Smurf on Aug 22, 2010 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

The problem is Rondo is the only guard on the roster who rarely looks for his own shot.

Without that kind of player on the court, they’re always going to end up going isolation. But, Rondo is such a bad shooter he becomes a liability.

DANIEL HUDSON SUCKS. HOWS THAT GUN BAN WORKING FOR YOU MAYOR DALLY

by Ozzie Montana on Aug 22, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I like Curry much better than Gordon

We have enough guys that can defend on the perimeter. As a scorer off the bench I prefer Curry who, in addition to the sweet stroke, is a much better ball-handler than Gordon. And the physicality of the game hasn’t affected him offensively.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Aug 22, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

he still has to play defense

he looks like the least athletic guard out there, for either team. Plus, I don’t know if he can play the 2. With Rose, Rondo, Billups you already have 3 guys to play the point. Plus Westbrook as your 4th

Or anyone for that matter.

So many touch shots are rattling around like pinballs. I think many of these guys will return to the NBA with a newfound appreciation for touch. Derrick’s floaters mostly fall in the NBA, but they are flat floaters. If he returns this season with more touch to it then they’ll fall at an even greater rate.

But on the whole I think everyone is learning the touch and feel of the balls and rims. I think that is why Durant has been better from the perimeter this game.

That's why Kahn hiring a coach who wanted to install the triangle and then drafting all these talented point guards

made no sense. All the PG in the triangle needs to do is make the entry pass into the post and stand in the corner and wait for the kick out and three pointer.

Fortunately Coach K. pulled him when he did. When Rose came back he was a lot more calm.
Still would help if they had a real center or PF on the team. Chandler and Odom just don’t cut it right now.
CP3 could do something with them, but not Rose.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Aug 22, 2010 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Watching these games

I am not that worried about Rose’s offense, he is good offensively and will most likely continue to be so, he probably gets hung up on what he thinks his role on this team is though and maybe that is taking him out of a lot of plays.

Although, what I am impressed with is that he is being much more aggressive defensively than he has been and I think that may be because of all of the other aggressive guards on this team rubbing off on him.

by Basketball on Aug 22, 2010 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think I'd say he "went" to Rose

Coach K is a great coach and could have called a timeout and set something up, but he had faith to let Rose run the team and make the right decision. That speaks just as loud if not louder.

smh

so Coach K was incapable of calling a play for anyone else? Billups was on the court and they had run Billups/KD pick and rolls the two previous plays. They could have went with a KD iso like they had been doing all game long. They went to Rose on the pick and roll, just like Steve Smith was calling for. Its not default that he was in the game at the end with the ball in his hands and not Curry, Westbrook, Billups or Gordon (I remove Rondo because he wasn’t playing today).

by Basketball Smurf on Aug 22, 2010 4:37 PM CDT up reply actions

No, I'm happy he was in the game in that spot

and I’m not trying to diminish Rose at all, I just don’t think it was a situation where Coach K “went” with Rose. If anything, I agree with RogersParKris, this speaks more to Derrick’s confidence in taking those big shots. Which was cool to see.

Superteams suck.

On Rose and the last play

On the play in which he scored on the go ahead layup:
It was made for me to play aggressive. Coach K and them told me to just push the ball and we’re going to do a high pick and roll – a drag – to where I could make an option, attack. If people are open, pass the ball and if not, try to get fouled.

by Stacey_Is_King on Aug 22, 2010 5:04 PM CDT reply actions

Overall he played a strong game

We tend to see his bad plays magnified. Rubio toasted him on some plays and he made a few head-scratchers. But he was clutch down the stretch, penetrated at will and sank the 2 game winning free throws.

I personally think he is adjusting to the international game rather quickly. They will all need to learn to put more touch on their shots and adjust to the weight of the ball.

All in all, most of the analysts who covered the game said he was the MVP.

Maybe it is just me

But I think the Summer of LeRod stuff really hit home with Derrick. Never has he talked so much about his own legacy before. It was almost as if he learned what he did not want to be when LeRod made the choices he made. Let us hope that this is not just a bunch of talk and that the next few years of his career support his words.

As for the game, his numbers are not great (largely because of that bad stretch in the 3rd) but I think it was clear the value he added while being in the line-up.

Sheridan's take

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&page=TeamUSA-100822

Most interesting part:

"The victory came with a little added intrigue too, Rose claiming afterward that Rondo was suffering from some sort of sinus infection — a statement that was refuted by team director Jerry Colangelo.

Aside from starting Rose over Rondo, Krzyzewski also went with Odom at center in place of Tyson Chandler.

“Coach told the team this morning that he was going to try some other players, change the lineup,” Colangelo told ESPN.com. "We’ve been off to some bad starts in our three games, and so he went with a different lineup, and he said some guys might not play today. And that’s how it played out. I don’t think anything is significant."

Curious. Why would Rose think it was a sinus infection? Anyone get the feeling that they are holding something back?
