5. Derrick Rose(notes), Chicago Bulls (last year: 11th)

I take in quite a bit of noise for Bulls fans for pointing out Rose's bad defense, his inability to consistently get to the line, and his so-so passing. But I also saw him hit a three-pointer a few days ago - it had arc, rotation, follow-through; the whole schmear - and I can't help but bump the guy up. Especially with a screening and finishing partner in Carlos Boozer(notes) waltzing into town.

yea saw this.

is it still okay that a fury grows inside of me to see Rondo higher?

Honestly

Right now Rondo is at a higher level than Rose. You could just as easily have put Rose at number 3 if you predicted a huge jump, but Rondo was better last year. We’ll see what happens during the year.

Surprised he's that high

really hope Rose proves himself this year

I reject your reality... and substitute my own.

Who else would you put above him?

I think #5 is completely fair.

Id still put Billups over him

but honestly, I wrote that thinkin they had him at number 3

What basis is there to put him ahead of Tony Parker?

Parker’s just 28, he put up a year in 2009 (31.7% USG, .556 TS%, 40.1 AST%) that Rose can only dream of right now, and he’s proven it in the playoffs. I’m not saying Rose’s #5 ranking is definitely wrong, but I think anyone ranked between #2 and #9 is basically interchangeable.

by YaoPau on Aug 18, 2010 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd go #3 and #9, but I basically agree

I think Nash and Billups are due for a drop-off, personally.

I got the skills to pay the bills and that's about it

Last year Rose was definitely better

Yes, last year was probably an aberration for Parker, but then again, so was his 2009 to some extent.

It's hard to fault Parker for having plantar fasciitis

Four straight years of 20+ PER, something Rose hasn’t done yet

I guess I look at it from the stanpoint

of if I was starting a team and needed a PG to build around, then who would I pick. I would go.

1.Paul
2.Rose
3.Williams
4.Nash
5.Rondo

Everyone on that list has had some sort of big man or low post threat to throw the ball to. Or supporting cast. Rose has had neither. I’m really interested on seeing what Rose does now that he finally has a guy that he can play pick and roll with.

Yeah but it worked!

I almost wish that less media people think highly of Rose.

I feel uneasy about so many people getting on the Rose bandwagon.

I am all for him taking the 3rd year jump. I fully expect it. Still, there are a lot of really good PGs in the league and Rose, for as talented as he is and as hard he is working, does have a lot to work on. I am looking forward more to Rose at age 24 and 25 than Rose this year. Not that I am NOT looking forward to seeing his growth, because I am. But the combination of Rose filling the stat sheets properly and having veteran savvy is really going to be something to watch for.

Ugh, "thought" not "think"

Bad morning for grammar. Rough day of work so far.

this continually amazes me

next person who says they prefer people don’t say good things about the team or player because they prefer ‘sneaking up’, or being the ‘underdog’….um, I don’t know what I’ll do. probably just say it’s annoying.

You want to hear of high expectations, that means a lot of people think you could be good, and is a solid correlation (though not the best) towards actually being good, which is what we want!

I’d love to get the pub the Heat are getting right now (the 72 wins pub, not the douchiest team in the universe pub)

I think there can be a healthy medium

between receiving high praise and being called, er, douchy. :)

Rose’s improvement is inevitable. And top 5 PG is possible, if not probable. And it isn’t really Dwyer that I am talking about because I respect him. But the bandwagon keeps getting bigger and bigger and through the years I have seen too many players in a variety of sports be branded as “elite” or “the next big thing” and so on and only so many of them really go on to fulfill that role.

I am all for Rose support. I would just prefer people to just relax and let him show what he will do. An unreasonable request, no doubt, but my preference nonetheless.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Aug 18, 2010 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

How many players not branded as elite have gone on to become elite?

He clearly has elite tools, and I think it’s beneficial for the media to expect him to become elite than just another semi-star.

by YaoPau on Aug 18, 2010 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions

That is a question that would take a lot of research :)

Probably not as much in basketball though. BBall can be pretty cut and dry when it comes to such things compared to baseball and football.

by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Aug 18, 2010 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Well what do you mean by "not branded as elite"?

Does MJ getting cut in high school qualify? Or Pippen not getting offered a college scholarship? Or are those references from too early in their careers?

What about Pau Gasol? He was branded as too soft and he’s clearly an elite player now.

Pat Riley is the devil.

also peeves me since I also hear complaints that people should be positive for positivity sake

point is: if Rose doesn’t make a leap this year it won’t be because of expectations.
