(updated with speech video) Pippen HOF roundup
Noticed a few Pippen fanshots up already, so figured to consolidate a bit. Post whatever you got here.
- The Painted Area: "I Loved Watching Scottie Pippen Play Basketball"
- Skip Bayless on Pippen (for some reason this was posted, just passing along the fanshot)
- Video of Top-10 Pippen dunks
- NY Times article
- Jerry Krause on Pippen
- And of course if you haven't read it already, Sam Smith on Pippen.

I love how on the Skip Bayless one
They have Skip going against Jamelle Hill, who is alright I suppose but not in Bayless’s league as a debator.
That’s annoying. Pippen is a top 30 player ever if not higher. Best defensive player I’ve ever seen. Sure he’s not a Center which can control the post, but Pippen was easily the best team defender of all time and second to perhaps Michael on the man to man defense…..Pippen was the better defender of the two.
He was a solid ball handler, passer, good long range shooter, solid scorer.
He is light years better than say a Paul Pierce ever was…
It’s nice and correct to see him in the first ballot, it’s also funny it seems that it’s Pippen first then Karl Malone (2nd all time in scoring)….maybe that’s a Chicago vs Utah thing, but I do think Pipp was as good as Malone ever was, so I’m glad to see him get his much deserved due. I remember like 5-6 yrs ago it seemed that Pippen’s legacy was somehow being rewritten that he was just a byproduct of MJ, but it’s good to know that somewhere in the 2006-2007 timeframe it started to swtich…..it seemed like it switched back when there was the story that he might go to Miami to play for Pat Riley…..
Oh well, easily my all time favorite player. I just yesterday watched the Game 6 I think of the Cavs-Bulls series from maybe 1992? it was on NBATV yesterday and to start the game off Pipp was amazing….then deferred a bit to MJ who had an off night until down the stretch, but Pipp was always a force. God I miss 90’s bball…..first time I’ve watched it since then.
Pippen might have had 7 rings without that stupid f-ing crap Knicks call.
And….Donaghy ref’d the 15 pt loss against the dynastic Lakers in the West Finals…..and I think that game was listed too as one of those games that he threw….
Crap.
Pipp was fantastic. Make him a coach Thibs.

I posted the fanshot.
I know it’s dumb because both debaters are asshats. But still how can ESPN even put that on the air? So many facts were wrong about what he said. When Skip Bayless was writing for the tribune he sucked and only made it a year. 1998 Pippen was playing with a bad back.
But to put all of Pippen’s success on MJ is not fair.

Skip Bayless is just playing a part
He takes the contrarian view no matter what. I don’t know if this makes him more or less of an asshat.
I guess if the paycheck was nice enough I could be willing be an asshat.
I mean I do on here for free.

They needed Stephen A or
the 2 live Stu’s, maybe Scoop Jackson to go against skip instead of Jamele Hill.

All of them have a topic that they have views that we shake our heads at. And to be honest Skip is right more than anyone on ESPN thats why hes still on. You can’t just say these things and be wrong just for someone to hate.
I disagree with him but I respect him for sure. I think he is very honest.

Any arguing done on ESPN is an act meant to drive up viewership
Trev Alberts and Sean Salisbury both said after leaving the network that they were told by producers to be sure to take opposing views to whomever they were sharing a segment with.
Well, isn't what LeBron did last night the living embodiment of The Secret, leaving millions on the table and turning himself into a hometown villain, all for the sake of winning?

It's really easy to be right more times than wrong in sports
Especially when you always take a contrarian point of view. Look at the NBA draft. How many players are even useful out of the the usual draft? If you simply predicted every player would be a failure, you would be right more times than being wrong. It doesn’t mean you said anything useful.
I know her name and recognized her a bit
But I can’t place her and well judging from that clip I would have said the same (she is an idiot) but I am a bit ingorant and don’t want to say that off of one bad clip without knowing more….so I was a bit indifferently positive above.

I know Dwyer was anxiously waiting to get back from his honeymoon to get this out.
Sad to say that even though I was around during the Bulls’ glory years, I was age 11-17 during those times and was too fixated on school, playing baseball and surviving a crappy home life to really appreciate all that those Bulls teams did. Like every young kid without superstar talent, I emulated Pippen as well. I liked playing defense and rebounding a lot more than scoring because I instinctively found it much easier to keep someone from scoring than it was to score myself. I honestly cannot remember anyone scoring on my in my sophomore year of high school playing JV. Of course I scored maybe 12 points that entire year lol.
Wish I could look back at all of those games myself and just observe Scottie at work.
I REALLY wish that Rose would just give Scottie a call and ask him to be his personal defensive coach, but of course he has USA basketball right now. I would love for Thibs to just hire him on to have him work exclusively on defense.

Dwyer is Awesome (capital A intentional):
And anytime I get spitting mad at the thought that millions of people that have to listen to Mark Jackson help “call” this league’s biggest games, I just pull up tapes of the 1998 Eastern Conference finals, to watch Scottie make him his absolute creature. Mama, there goes that chump.

i think miller is worse personally
from now on instead of saying "go fuck yourself" im gunna just say "go join the heat"
Reggie is bad at his job, but he at least has a certain intelligence about him,
Mark Jackson can’t call the game and contributes ignorance on a daily basis.

I hate Reggie more
From his playing days, and his voice is worse, but he’s still better as a commentator than Mark Jackson….and this is not an endorsement of Reggie Miller because I still hate him.

Yeah..
I just find it funny how ESPN/abc people talk about the 90’s Bulls or the 90’s, kinda like they never existed. Has it been that long that people forget everything? Van Gundy and Mark Jackson were both on the Knicks during the 90’s so maybe they’d rather forget. Sad that they are the voices now.
I mean seriously who were these guys? Tim Legler, Jalen Rose, Van Gundy, Mark Jackson, Mashburn (he’s ok) but who did they hire these people?
Jalen Rose is funny, and usually knows what he's saying
Van Gundy is hilarious. But their ‘analysts’ are terrible.

I will never forget that nor how he took Magic out of his game in 91. I can’t look at Ewing the same either since Pippen made him his personal poster boy.

I'll always remember Game 1 of that series
I think Scottie scored 4 points, yet he completely dominated the game. Mark Jackson could barely get the ball past halfcourt.
Those highlights were awesome.
Basically the same dunk, just with the passer, opponent, and arena set to randomize.
But still, any one of those would be a #1 highlight for any guy.
Plus, if your number 10 career highlight is dunking on Ewing, you had a pretty special career.
You must have me confused with someone else, I have never been to Chicago.

And my signature has never felt more apt then it has recently.

[whispers] I sexually assaulted Scottie Pippen in 1997.
Kind of random trivia that I just thought of
Number of Bulls all-stars from 1999-2010: 1 (Derrick Rose, 2010)
Number of Bulls all-stars on the 1994 team that didn’t have MJ: 3 (Pip, Grant, BJ)
Anytime I think the Heat will top 72 wins, I end up re-realizing how awesome those Jordan Bulls teams were. Best player ever in Jordan, a 1st ballot Hall of Famer in Pippen, two guys in Grant/BJ who made all-star teams, two guys in Kukoc/Rodman who could’ve (look at Kukoc’s numbers early on. He was Ginobili on offense), the best 3pt shooter ever in Kerr. Even guys I thought were mere role players: Jud Buechler, Ron Harper, Luc Longley, Will Perdue, I look at their stats now and realize I’d love to have guys like that on the Bulls this year.

yep i dont understand how people think the heat will beat 72
that bulls team was just amazingly built and had absolutely no weakness.
probably the best defensive players in the league and the best offensive players in the league on the same team. thinking about it is just scary

Congratulatons to Scottie Pippen!
Without question he is one of the greatest to ever play the game.

I teared up at the end of Scottie's speech.
It’s kinda sad thinking about how good we had it and how little this city knew what it had.

Karl Malone's speech was getting to me a little bit
Especially since Malone was so overwhelmed nearly the whole time he was up there. His little exchange with Barkley at the beginning was pretty funny.
"Did Michael Jordan join the Pistons when he couldn't beat them? No. He dug down deep and went out and kicked their fucking ass."
definitely the most moving speech of the night

Here’s the intro…really great quotes in here
All I want in life is for UC fans to chant: Deeeeeloooonte during Heat games
Skip Bayless...
I think what Skip Bayless was saying about Pippen is one of the greatest litmus test of what a true contrarion or meathead fan really is. If you don’t think Scottie is a HOF and can give concrete reasons based on his play alone then fine, but to try to make the argument that it was all Jordan and the Jordanaires is really an insult to anyone watching the game.
Scottie was my favorite player. He was beautiful to watch on the court and he was the ultimate finesse player. The thing I loved about his game was that it was the very definition of subtlety. How he played and the impact of what he did on the court is the very reason why guys like Skip Bayless (contrarion) and Mike North (meathead fan) can run around talking about the amount of points he scored on a nightly basis and try to say that he was nothing without Jordan. Jordan no longer had to guard the best guy every night, he no longer had to grab every rebound or bring every ball up the court. To me Scottie was the best wing defender in history and I can only think of a handful of low post defenders that could do what he did to Charles Smith in the playoffs without fouling.
He was also one of the greatest finshers in the game.
Anyone that wants to make the argument that Scottie was nothing without Jordan needs to be told one thing: Scottie came closer to winning a ring without MJ than vice versa.
Yeah but it worked!

they replayed the 94' all star game yesterday on comcast. two things.
1) man i loved watching pippen play. honestly, the only reason why i wanted mcgrady on this team is because his weird body and way of moving (especially with the ball) reminds me so much of pippen.
2) its february of 94’ and you can tell by the way magic and fratello and marv (the announcers) are talking that still everyone underestimates how good pippen is. magic even dubbs that freakin’ exhibition game “pippens coming out party”.
"If I was to answer that question honestly, I would have to lie to you."

Superman and Batman, together on the same stage for the last time.
I absolutely HATE it when people call Jordan and Pippen, “Batman and Robin”. The comparison simply doesn’t hold up.
Michael was the player with all of the physical gifts and the best press that any player could’ve ever asked for. Look up “controversy” and “Michael Jordan”. Not much going on there, huh? At least, not from when he was a Bull. He was the Boy Scout, the pretty face, and simply the most talented player of an entire generation. In short, that’s Superman.
Scottie was all grit, heart, and determination. He knew that he didn’t have the best tools in the world, physically at least. So he built himself the tools. Spent years refining his craft as a perimeter defensive force and the only true “point-forward” that the NBA has ever seen. He had Jason Kidd’s hands with Dennis Rodman’s defensive prowess and Kobe Bryant’s tenacity. He had to work his entire life to acquire these tools, training with the best that he could possibly train with in an environment that he could best take advantage of that training. Nothing was ever given to Scottie; he had to earn every scar and every bruise on his body to become what he became. In short, that’s Batman.
Please retire the “Batman and Robin” moniker for Michael and Scottie. They were the best two players of their generation at their positions, and they both played for the same team. Michael grabbed the limelight and stole all the attention. Scottie did all the gruntwork necessary to give Michael and starving Chicago sports fans the most impressive and FUN decade that any sports city could ever dream about.
Michael “Superman” Jordan and Scottie “Batman” Pippen. Sharing the stage for likely the last time. Simply enjoy the experience.

Batman eventually won this one as well.
MJ never had a season of 50+ wins without Pippen. Pippen almost had two without MJ for the Bulls, and then had another for the TrailBlazers in 99/00. In fact, MJ never won more than 40 games in a season without Pippen, for any team, including the Wizards. Scottie accomplished the feat without MJ six separate times, and it would’ve been 7 if not for the strike in 98 (granted that was with a star-studded cast).
MJ was the best individual player of all time. Scottie was the best team player.

Nah, he was like Gambit. Phil and Tex Winter were Professor X and Jean Grey, respectively.
Rodman was more like Wolverine. He was a badass who got things done, but every once in a while he just randomly leaves and you’re not really sure what happened.
