What will you do if there's a lockout next year?
The last lockout was in 1999, before the era of blogging. I guess all the NBA blogs will have to consist of labor negotiation updates and “Lebron’s mom” jokes.
it won't be good.
I honestly may use it to bore people other other subjects of interest that I usually only subject to friends who delete my email.

My thought exactly. Hey, Matt:
where’s the obligatory “Sam is crazy” line?
I love reading Sam, even when he’s pulling stuff out of thin air.
"It’d be ridiculous to hate someone for simply what they say in a sports blog. But I greatly dislike every syllable of your angst-filled, smarmy, nondescript, half-assed, elitist-garbage responses." –Rogerspark Kris
And now he’s going into the Basketball Hall of Fame. C’mon, you cannot even make that up.
It should have said:
“C’mon, I cannot even make that up.
Congrats to Scottie! Much deserved!
I wonder if PIPs’ HOF speech will top Jordans’ in anger and vindictiveness.

Scottie was the man
I had to grow up to really appreciate his game. When I was younger all I could see was MJeffs highlight, but Scottie’s game was just as beautiful. Well deserved to be in the HOF.

When I was growing up and learning to play basketball
all I did was imitate Scotties game. I would try and do his up and under lay ups but what I always loved was how he would shut down players on D. Because of that I would always pride myself on what I do on defense more than offense. Jordan was great but Scottie was my favorite player.

I doubt anyone will surpass Scottie as my favorite athlete of all-time.
Beast on both ends of the court, I loved watching him play even when he was all broken down in that last season.

I always say this but the 1994 team is my favorite team.
There was just something about that year that made it so fun. The old stadium’s last year, Kukoc was a rookie and it was Pippen’s team. It just made you realize how good Pippen was without Jordan. I think the 1994 year was just like the peak of 90’s basketball for the Bulls. Yeah they came back and won more with Rodman but all the rivals started to die off. Orlando gave them a good shot but that was nothing like the Knicks and Pistons. I think 94 was the last great series with the Knicks and the Bulls got a raw deal. But it was just a fun season.

As for the defensive vid
Notice how the vast majority of those steals did NOT come from jumping a passing lane and ignoring his defender.
Notice how the vast majority of his blocks were with an effort to keep the ball in play and not foolishly send it into the stands to show off.
Notice how the charges he took were mostly real shots and how he was always in true position and not just flopping on the softest of contacts (some were flops though.)
How does anyone in this league try and learn and play defense and NOT watch hours upon hours of Pippen tape? He was like a 7 foot tall 6’7"er.

One counter...
to the 1.8 seconds issue is that Scottie had spent the entire year being that team’s MJ. He was the guy carrying the team, being the leader, being the centerpiece and focus of that team and at it’s most crucial point Phil went in another direction.
It worked out in the end and I don’t think Phil regrets it or thinks he made the wrong choice but it was still unfair to Pip. Should he have pouted and taken himself out of the play? Probably not, but how would MJ have reacted in that same situation?
this one made me smile

"Oh, y ahora ¿quién podrá defenderme?" "¡Yo!"
Nice write-up
Especially for someone who grew up in northern california during the time and, without the rise of the internet, really knew nothing of the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff that went on. A few things stick out as I read this:
1. It really seemed as if there were no heroes or villains within the organization; just 4 polarizing figures that made you jump either left or right depending on what you hear about them. Those figures, of course, being MJ, Scottie, Krause and Phil.
2. Obviously this is just wild speculation, but you get the feeling that if Krause from back then were running the LeRod Cavs then those teams would have won multiple titles. Small sample, I know, but Krause seemed to draft and trade in what he felt was in the best interest of the Bulls and not how Jordan particularly wanted things. Imagine a GM/Owner tandem in Cleveland that did not spend the last 5 years catering to what a high school graduate with no real scouting ability and what he wants.
3. Wow, one of 12 kids. I do not want to even get into why anyone would have that many kids, but just wow regardless.
4. Why isn’t Horace Grant introducing Scottie? Are they no longer as close as they were?
I suppose that is all.
by Dr. Handsome, D.D.S. on Aug 12, 2010 2:02 PM CDT reply actions
Not just one of 12, but the YOUNGEST of 12?
Yeah, that’ll toughen anyone into a stubborn bastard
I don't think Horace can induct Scottie because you have to have somebody that is already in the HOF induct you.
It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.
Scottie and Horace no longer speak
they fell out a few years ago. I would love to know why that occurred considering Horace came to practice late to help Scottie mourn a cat. I remember hearing rumors back then that they were thinking of trading one of them because they were just too damn close and kicking it too damn hard.

I love these quotes
I’ll say what’s on my mind—I’m not going to be a phony—and sometimes people don’t like that. I don’t like making a front.
The Bulls wanted someone to go out and be quiet. They say, ’You’re a player and you do your job.’ That’s not me. I know some things I’ve said or things I’ve done haven’t always been understood, but if it comes down to speaking your feelings or doing what you have to do, you’re cheating yourself if you don’t voice your opinion. You’re allowing people to run over you. And I’ll never do that."
"Well you're giving me the opportunity to agree with Bill Plaschke and Marriotti, I'm gonna pass" - Tim Cowlishaw
Anything anyone who knows anything about basketball agrees with this.
LeRod is not a great defender. He is a good defender who does fancy chase-down blocks.

just because he blocks people from behind (who can't see him) doesn't make him a great defender..
I have never considered LeBron a great defender so to compare him with Scottie’s legendary defense is just retarded to me. I find it insulting.

I think he'll always be my favorite player
In the spring of 1991 I was sitting in Spanish class at Evanston high school (ETHS, wuuuut!) when we noticed a bunch of kids running down the hall in the middle of the period. One of them stopped at the door and whispered something to the kid sitting closest, then word started spreading around the room and kids just started getting up and leaving right in the middle of class. It turned out Scottie was getting a haircut across the street, Evanston having the closest black barbershop to wherever he lived up on the north shore. It was a mob scene.
Contrast that with the next year when Jim Harbaugh, then the starting quarterback of the Bears, came to do a voter registration drive and sat through three straight lunch periods in the corner of the cafeteria and was just plain ignored by everyone.
Anyway I love me some Scottie. Maybe not the greatest player ever but definitely my favorite.

Pippen was always my fave Bull. Of course MJ was God but I could relate to Pippen. Pippen is like Batman, a regular dude(of course stronger and quicker than the average Joe) but not supernaturally gifted…he has to use his smarts and wile to get ahead. Jordan was like Superman, too obvious. Also as a player, I was always better on defense so I would watch hours of Scottie tape. Check all those Pip defense vids on Youtube…it’s like artwork. And of course the steal leading to the fast break pull up 3 were so necessary. I still use the Scottie scoop layup to this day.
Also Phil was right regarding Kukoc taking that shot, maybe Scottie deserved it but it was the right decision and right play. I wish they had audio of Cartwright goin off on Scottie after the game.
great writeup indeed..sam should just write books and call it a day
“Scottie is not the kind of player to make winning shots, game-winning plays, but he was always more unselfish than Michael. If I were on the floor, I’d want to play with a guy like Pippen more than Jordan, but the perception always runs ahead of the reality, and Michael was the guy always perceived as hitting that winning shot and Scottie not doing it.”
Steve Kerr used to recount times on the floor he’d go several minutes and not get a shot and become a bit wary. He said Pippen would run by him and say, "I know you haven’t gotten a shot. Don’t worry. Next time, I’ll get you one." Kerr said it was uncanny Pippen seemed to know what everyone on the court needed.
All I want in life is for UC fans to chant: Deeeeeloooonte during Heat games
it was MJ that made me a Bulls fan and a sports nut in general...
but you better believe i had my Scottie jersey too, and i remember jumping out of my seat watching that dunk on Ewing on TV.
i always believed Scottie was as much of an athlete as MJ. the measurables are there. similar height and weight. both dunked from the foul line. similar speed. MJ might’ve had the edge in intangibles/ “it” factor, but Scottie was just like the glue that held it all together. did the dirty work. basically defined the term “point forward”. i just always loved his game. silky smooth. and his long arms just made him a nightmare on defense. that combo of having the two best players at SG and PG is what really made the dynasty IMO.
…and i will say, when “the decision” happened, Heat fans would tell me “oh, you guys had a Dream Team back in the day, too.” all i can say is the Bulls never “colluded” to build a dynasty. they did it what i consider the right way: draft great players, put perfect compliments around them, give them a genius coach.
MJ- drafted
Pip- drafted
HoGrant- drafted
Rodman- so much baggage many teams wouldn’t take him on.
Kukoc- drafted (i point him out b/c someone told me “the Bulls went and got the best Euro player.” hey, other teams had the chance to draft him)
BJ- drafted
Pax- signed as a 2nd or 3rd year player if i recall
they just don’t build teams like that anymore.

Love Scottie
He’s so lucky Kukoc made that shot, otherwise Scottie would be remembered for that inglorious moment. It really is unprecedented in NBA history. Though I understand why he felted slighted by Jackson’s coaching decision, Scottie was never a clutch shooter at the end of games.

I hope Pippen gets a coaching gig
He’s got to take a small role first to rise up the ranks to top chef.
The story about Kerr is what I like. A few years back Pippen was the third wheel on the CSN crew for the playoffs. Between quarters Pippen was talking about what the Bulls had done. Pip was walking through every single movement on the court in the quarter. Every pass, every shot, and every missed opportunity. Sam talks about Phil saying Pippen was the smartest player he’d ever coached.
Pippen has a gifted mind for the game. I hope he takes a low man coaching role to get a shot at exercising that talent.
I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.
"Sam has a tendency to denigrate reports coming from any reporter who didn’t also cover the day Naismith first put up the peach baskets." - snley
With the Bulls, of course
that’d be great if he was an assistant.
