Bulls sign Carlos Boozer to 5yr, $80m deal. [formerly BlogABron 7/7 (#6)]
My quick take: If it was a choice between Boozer and David Lee, I think Lee may have been the better risk over five years, but Boozer is the better player right now. And if this helps them sway 'the decision' for LeBron, it's worth the gamble to get this done ASAP and not have to wait for Lee.
So wow, we have another player under contract!
Not sure what happened with the last post, some saw it and others didn't. The chaos is probably appropriate, anyway.
Hope this works.

I disagree....
This is a good move, with or without Lebron. 19 and 11, solid post scorer, and below max $$ - probably a fair value for Boozer. Better than breaking the bank for Joe Johnson, like people were talking about last week.
by Spartan D on Jul 7, 2010 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I think that it actually makes sense
DLee duplicates Noah to some extent, and we are not breaking the bank for Boozer.
THat first contract year is likely around 13.5 million, meaning that we have enough to sign Lebron right now.

Assuming full $80M and standard 8% raises…could be tweaked or rounded, but it should be close to offer Lebron a full max contract.

I’d like to see Miller back. Maybe even Miller and Asik are possible. If it’s Asik, then Bulls should sign Kurz as a stretch 4. Bring in a couple of shooting guards like Morris Almond from our summer league, plus either Mike Miller/Ray Allen/ JJ Reddick/ or Josh Childress. I’m ready to go.

Nope
Told you I suck at salary crap. I compounded, you’re right.
I don't know how to post that cool chart you used...
But the first year salary is $13,793,103.45 and year five is $18,206,896.55
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
That's what I was thinking
My guesstimates:
First Year: $13,636,516 Second Year: $14,727,437.6 Third Year: $15,905,632.61 Fourth Year: $17,178,083.22 Fifth Year: $18,552,329.88
TOTAL: 80,000,000
AVERAGE: 16,000,000
I got...
Year 1 – $13,793,103.45
Year 2 – $14,896,551.72
Year 3 -$16,000,000.00
Year 4 – $17,103,448.28
Year 5 -$18,206,896.55
I don’t know how to put it in that cool box.
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

I like the Boozer signing, but he'll be 29 three weeks into the season
But if it brings Lebron here then who cares
LeBron is coming people.
This solidifies it. Just because he didn’t go to college doesn’t mean Lebron is an idiot. All this leaked info about New York is ESPN Driving up ratings. Boozer isn’t that much of a downgrade from Bosh, and either way, this team is a helluva lot better than Cleveland. Helloo 4-6 years of glory.

YES LBJ MUST COME NOW
HE HAS TO
Malone...stripped by Michael, to the floor, stolen by M.J.! Michael the steal! 16 seconds left, Bulls down 1. Michael against Russell, 12 seconds...11...10. Jordan, Jordan a drive, hangs...fires...SCORE! He scores! The Bulls lead 87-86 with five and two tenths left, and now they're one stop away...
Bosh is more athletic...
But I would say Boozer is the tougher player. I’ll take the hard-nosed guy come playoff time.

I say the Bulls should get Brewer and Mike Miller
they can afford it if Lebron doesn’t come, of course. Play a little offense/defense with the two of them. Brewer starts, as Rose/Deng/Booze is enough offense in the starting lineup. Mike Miller first one off the bench.

It's all we can do, really
We won’t have perk until mid season. and we need the replacement for a back up center.
We have sheeds retiring contract to trade. And we’re hoping cleveland would send us verajao once they lose out on lebron. But thats really a pipe dream.
There’s no one out there who can replace ray. I’ve heard morrow, reddick, and mike miller thrown around. But they arent close to ray, and it will be very tough to sign them.
But thats where we’re at. Unless avery johnson is five years ahead of schedule ;D.

I would seriously consider Shaq if I were Danny Ainge. He can at least do what Kendrick Perkins does for a few months. And when Perk returns, you could have the best backup center in the league.
Kwame Brown is a decent option as well, but I would take Shaq for the MLE 10 times out of 10.
"I want people to fear me"- Derrick Rose.
"That boy is BAD"- Stacey King.
I'm almost positive Ray Allen is coming back to Boston
Doc Rivers probably got assurance from Pierce and Allen that they were coming back when he was deciding to coach this year.
He would be stupid not to.

Current Salary Cap Situation
Carlos Boozer: $13,636,516 (Projected)
Luol Deng: $11,355,850
Derrick Rose: $5,546,160
Joakim Noah: $3,128,536
James Johnson: $1,713,600
Taj Gibson: $1,117,680
Total Committed Salaries for 2010-2011: $36,498,342
Projected Salary Cap for 2010-2011: $56,100,00
Cap Space Available for Free Agents: $56,100,00-36,498,342-(473,604*6) = $16,760,034
I would adjust year 1 by about $160K.
$13,793,103.45
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
That would lead to a 5 year/81 million contract
I’m assuming he’s getting the full 8% raise, which maybe screwing me up
Cap figure could go to 56.5
That number has been tossed around too, just not nearly as much as 56.1.
I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

Okay where am I going wrong here
ESPN says the Bulls have $29.1 mil of cap space. Boozer starts at $13.8 mil, LeBron will cost $16.6 mil. $13.8 + $16.6 = $30.4 mil.
Oh wait, one less roster hold
so $29.9 mil. still a bit short
are you sure its an 8% rise
couldnt it be 10%…isnt that more common?
I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!
They value you it differently depending on where you sign...
If its a sign and trade, they can offer 10.5% raises, if the Bulls are signing him outright, they can only offer 8% raises…in both cases, these are non compounded raises…

LBJ is a Cav
Let’s just admit it and move on.
Boozer will be great when healthy, terrible when injured, and just ok in year 5. This is a huge deal for the Bulls and I am all for it. Plus this leaves lots of money to fill out the roster or trade for players into their cap space.
Not necessarily
Unless the Cavs can pull off some type of a trade for more talent, I’m not so sure LBJ would want to stick around with that stale group he can’t win with.

I heard Monta Ellis was on the block, but The Bulls will have to wait until GS is sold in August.

that would be great if he was…only thing I worry about with Ellis is the amount of ball hogging he does but then again he is the only good player on GS.

quick take - yay, alright!
If it was a choice between Boozer and David Lee, I think Lee may have been the better risk over five years, but Boozer is the better player right now. And if this helps them sway ‘the decision’ for LeBron, it’s worth the gamble to get this done ASAP and not have to wait for Lee.
So wow, we have another player under contract!

$80 million over 5 years comes out to $16 mil per year
The Bulls gave Ben Wallace $15 million a year a few years ago, so $16 million for Boozer is reasonable. The last year or two might be rough, but I don’t think Boozer will go to shit in year two like Big Ben did.
the bulls will have dumped him by year three
and wasted yet another draft pick on a frenchman they’ll never let suit up
don't let the bed bugs bite
He's 28
And will be 33 making 20 million. By the time he turns 34 he will not be under contract Bulls, unless he wins a championship here and gets an extension so he can retire a Bull.

Boozer/Bosh
I’m not sure Bosh is that much better than Boozer next year. In two or three years yes, but keep in mind Toronto doesn’t seem to sad to see him go, and two years in a row he was injured and couldn’t get his team to the playoffs.
Let’s hope Booz stays healthy and sticks it to Bosh.
Boozer best fit
If we run the pick and rolls as much as the jazz did last year we can get alot of points in the paint. Usually if the pg is not a shooter then the weakside defender doubles Boozer. That way theres no easy bucket for him. but that leaves noah open for a quick shot or one step dunk. It is always great to have a big thats mobile like Noah opposite a guy like Boozer in the pick and roll.

Would be pretty nice if LeBron realized that and came to the Bulls now :)
He and Noah would occupy the post very nicely, creating a lot of space for Deng, Rose, and LBJ
I agree it makes no sense for him to go to Miami
especially when he can come here and be the number one guy on this team and you can’t argue that we would be a better overall team than Miami. I honestly think we are even without LeBron.
Precisely
Knowing LJ he likes to be the #1 guy and at Miami its just not possible for him to be that guy even if he wins championship there the media will really question if it was LJ who did it and I think LJ is smart enough to recognize that and WILL pass on playing with DWade

What teams in the eastern conference playoffs have power forwards that are 7-1?

They don't need to do "creative" financing, right? This deal can start around $13.7 million per?
In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).
Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

with wade’s kids in the crowd at the uc and lebron hits a game winner on them

That's a nice picture.
But I want to know that could be a reality. Ah, Thursday, please get here soon.
So we got Boozer for 20 million less than NY got Amare for

his team wins…
I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!
not at all
boozer last year: 19.5 and 11.2
amare last year: 23.1 and 8.9
Malone...stripped by Michael, to the floor, stolen by M.J.!
Well, then again, the Jazz offense wasn't exactly low-scoring
And you can’t use steve nash either considering Deron williams’ pick&roll prowess.

Utah was 9th in pace last year
Phoenix was 4th.
I agree it’s not a huge difference.
So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

Why would they? Milsap already signed, and they're in luxury tax territory. Boozer was never going back to Utah.

My biggest concern right now
is that for the first time in a while, we have two injury prone players in the starting lineup.

It’s taking place in Greenwich, Conn. That’s really not a neutral site, as the wealthy of NYC live/recreation a lot in Greenwich.
