Bulls sign Carlos Boozer to 5yr, $80m deal. [formerly BlogABron 7/7 (#6)]

Hey, alright!

My quick take: If it was a choice between Boozer and David Lee, I think Lee may have been the better risk over five years, but Boozer is the better player right now. And if this helps them sway 'the decision' for LeBron, it's worth the gamble to get this done ASAP and not have to wait for Lee.

So wow, we have another player under contract!

Star-divide

Not sure what happened with the last post, some saw it and others didn't. The chaos is probably appropriate, anyway.

Hope this works.

by CubsBullsBears on Jul 7, 2010 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree....

This is a good move, with or without Lebron. 19 and 11, solid post scorer, and below max $$ - probably a fair value for Boozer. Better than breaking the bank for Joe Johnson, like people were talking about last week.

by Spartan D on Jul 7, 2010 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I think that it actually makes sense

DLee duplicates Noah to some extent, and we are not breaking the bank for Boozer.

THat first contract year is likely around 13.5 million, meaning that we have enough to sign Lebron right now.

Just over $13.7M

Assuming full $80M and standard 8% raises…could be tweaked or rounded, but it should be close to offer Lebron a full max contract.

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

It is funny

I’d like to see Miller back. Maybe even Miller and Asik are possible. If it’s Asik, then Bulls should sign Kurz as a stretch 4. Bring in a couple of shooting guards like Morris Almond from our summer league, plus either Mike Miller/Ray Allen/ JJ Reddick/ or Josh Childress. I’m ready to go.

Years 4 and 5...

Are going to be Soriano-esque.

Someday we'll go all the way...

by CubsBullsBears on Jul 7, 2010 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

not really

Soriani isn’t having a terrible year, but his team is sucking.

If Boozer has a “starting to decline superstar” year, he’ll still be very productive

LeBitch and KG's constant showboating, chest pounding, dunking with one hand behind the ear, dancing, and pure and simple rubbing it in is so fucking annoying.

by hongydraw on Jul 7, 2010 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

We got the rise of Taj

Third Year: $15,905,632.61
Fourth Year: $17,178,083.22
Fifth Year: $18,552,329.88

Year 4 – $17,103,448.28

LeBron is coming people.

This solidifies it. Just because he didn’t go to college doesn’t mean Lebron is an idiot. All this leaked info about New York is ESPN Driving up ratings. Boozer isn’t that much of a downgrade from Bosh, and either way, this team is a helluva lot better than Cleveland. Helloo 4-6 years of glory.

I say the Bulls should get Brewer and Mike Miller

they can afford it if Lebron doesn’t come, of course. Play a little offense/defense with the two of them. Brewer starts, as Rose/Deng/Booze is enough offense in the starting lineup. Mike Miller first one off the bench.

Things aren't looking great.

The heat have expressed interest in allen, as have the knicks, and i’m sure the bulls will as well if they lose out on lebron.

I know the celtics have made him an offer. And that if he wasn’t interested in playing with other max players, he’d already be signed.

But we’ll see. We need him badly.

by beantownboy171 on Jul 7, 2010 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

VERY badly.

I think resigning Pierce and Ray would be the best possible scenario for you guys.

Throw that in with Harangody looking like a steal and that’s not a bad offseason.

by Cosmis on Jul 7, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

It's all we can do, really

We won’t have perk until mid season. and we need the replacement for a back up center.

We have sheeds retiring contract to trade. And we’re hoping cleveland would send us verajao once they lose out on lebron. But thats really a pipe dream.

There’s no one out there who can replace ray. I’ve heard morrow, reddick, and mike miller thrown around. But they arent close to ray, and it will be very tough to sign them.

But thats where we’re at. Unless avery johnson is five years ahead of schedule ;D.

by beantownboy171 on Jul 7, 2010 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

lol

I would seriously consider Shaq if I were Danny Ainge. He can at least do what Kendrick Perkins does for a few months. And when Perk returns, you could have the best backup center in the league.

Kwame Brown is a decent option as well, but I would take Shaq for the MLE 10 times out of 10.

quick take - yay, alright!

If it was a choice between Boozer and David Lee, I think Lee may have been the better risk over five years, but Boozer is the better player right now. And if this helps them sway ‘the decision’ for LeBron, it’s worth the gamble to get this done ASAP and not have to wait for Lee.

So wow, we have another player under contract!

Boozer/Bosh

I’m not sure Bosh is that much better than Boozer next year. In two or three years yes, but keep in mind Toronto doesn’t seem to sad to see him go, and two years in a row he was injured and couldn’t get his team to the playoffs.

Let’s hope Booz stays healthy and sticks it to Bosh.

by TheNuge on Jul 7, 2010 4:21 PM CDT reply actions

Boozer best fit

If we run the pick and rolls as much as the jazz did last year we can get alot of points in the paint. Usually if the pg is not a shooter then the weakside defender doubles Boozer. That way theres no easy bucket for him. but that leaves noah open for a quick shot or one step dunk. It is always great to have a big thats mobile like Noah opposite a guy like Boozer in the pick and roll.

Why...

In this age of free agency in all sports, staying with one team is rare and not some moral obligation. Favre played for the Vikings, Jordan for the Wizards, even the beloved Johnny Damon played for the rival for the Yankees. Get over it.

Someday we'll go all the way...

see, i look at it another way

as Ohio’s fave son, if he can’t win there, wouldn’t you want him to succeed no matter what? i mean, if my kid had to move away because it was his best opportunity to succeed in his industry, i would support him all the way. its like keeping a bed-ridden, vegetative relative around out of selfish reasons, for not wanting to let go. if he can’t win in Cleveland, does it make them happier to watch him suffer there or isn’t there some pride in watching your favorite son go on to great things somewhere else?

Precisely

Knowing LJ he likes to be the #1 guy and at Miami its just not possible for him to be that guy even if he wins championship there the media will really question if it was LJ who did it and I think LJ is smart enough to recognize that and WILL pass on playing with DWade

Exactly

What teams in the eastern conference playoffs have power forwards that are 7-1?

Noah can guard Gasol, and Boozer can push Bynum out of the paint. It’s a much better situation than in Utah, where Boozer was often the tallest guy on his team.

They don't need to do "creative" financing, right? This deal can start around $13.7 million per?

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.
