Exactly

If both stories can’t be true, we HAVE to debate which one is false! Genius!!!!!!!

by cubbybear on Jul 6, 2010 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

It appears this all comes down to:

LBJ wants his max contract from Cleveland.
Wade wants his max contract from Miami.
Bosh wants his max contract from Toronto.

Bosh is the only one of the three who is in play for a sign and trade.

If Bosh does not go to Miami or Cleveland, LeBron and Wade *really have to decide between a chance to win, and the money, the money, the money.

Has this not really been the lay of the landscape from the start? (Other than ’Bron putting it out there that he would prioritize winning over contract? Which now appears to have been exposed as smoke coming out of his billion-dollar ass??)

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jul 6, 2010 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I think your last part is a bit off

If LeBron was prioritizing money, he’d sign with any of the other 5 teams, except maybe Miami which even with it’s no taxes, probably leads to the least marketing opportunities.

He’s clearly put playing near home ahead of everything else, money or winning.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 6, 2010 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Only the Cavs can give him the max money, and the sixth year.

And there’s no amount of players, picks and exceptions a team can give Cleveland to sign and trade LeBron. He’s big enough to keep his current endorsements even in the smaller market.

Certainly he figures to do better in a major market, and winning titles – but him trying to get Bosh to the Cavs so hard tells me he values his max contract deal most. At least at this moment in time. A moment that may or may not be recreated in three years – and most likely in Boston or LA, as Chicago and the Knicks will be capped out.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jul 6, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

either his max contract

or Ohio being home, and not wanting to leave

by SidM on Jul 6, 2010 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

You have to think the 6th year means less to him than Bosh, Wade, etc.

Because, A) at 25 he already has more money than most world leaders, and B) he’ll only be 30 when his next contract is up.

by pooriejay on Jul 6, 2010 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

A max contract

Is nothing compared to the money he’d get in New York or Chicago.

So he loses 5 or 6 million the next years. There’s no way in hell he doesn’t recoup that by year 2 with the Bulls. He’s not staying for money. You can bash the guy all you want, but it’s obvious if he stays at home, it’s because he wants to be at home, it’s not financial.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 6, 2010 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Not bashing LeBron, taking the max money with a new labor agreement coming isn't dumb.

It’s just not what he was saying before the process started. He said championships were more important than a contract.

Or maybe you think LeBron + Bosh + the LeBronninares is a better situation to win titles that LeBron + Bosh + Rose + Noah + Gibson + whatever else the Bulls can put on the floor for the next 8 years or so of their collective primes?

There’s an argument to be made, I wouldn’t find it persuasive. If LeBron’s top priority was to stay home and win a title for his hometown, all he had to do was say so from the start, and turn the screws on the Cavs to get the Bosh S&T done.

by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jul 6, 2010 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

The Max money though

Is still less money than he’d make in other revenue streams going to New Jersey, New York or the Bulls. So yeah, basketball contract, he’s making more, but overall, it’s clearly a financial loss for LBJ to stay at home.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 6, 2010 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you on that point.

But it doesn’t seem to jake with LeBron trying so hard to bring Bosh to Cleveland, when there appear to be better landing spots out there. I also happily concede that some desire to stay at home, and not disappoint his Cleveland fans is somewhere in his thinking.

Still doesn’t change the point I’m making. To reiterate the question you didn’t address:

Do you think LeBron + Bosh + the LeBronninares is a better situation to win titles that LeBron + Bosh + Rose + Noah + Gibson + whatever else the Bulls can put on the floor for the next 8 years or so of their collective primes?

(Or do you disagree with my point that LeBron started this whole free agent rodeo by stating that he was more interested in titles than maxing out his next playing contract?)

LeBron already knows that Wade/Bosh are going to sign with the Bulls

and Cleveland is working on finalizing a deal to land CP3/Okafor for Mo Williams/Jameson..

Deal saves NO approx 3 mil this year and 6 mil next year and then both players come off the books.

CLE shapes up as:
Paul
Parker/West
LeBron
Hickson/Verajao
Okafor

New Orleans as:
Collison
Mo Williams
Peja/Posey
Jameson
West

Bulls:
Rose
Wade
James Johnson + signed shooter (Korver?)
Bosh
Noah

by cubbybear on Jul 6, 2010 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Couple theories

1. The Bulls are waiting on this CAP number to see if they even need to trade deng. If so, maybe the do the portland trade.

1.5 Portland is talking to other teams about a trade and are waiting; thus, bulls have to wait to see if they can trade deng.

2. LBJ, Wade, and Bosh are also waiting on this number to see if 2/3 can play in chicago….

3. Chicago/Toronto are still ironing out a sign/trade for Bosh which is why it is taking forever cuz toronto still can’t decide what type of players they want back.

4. Wade is waiting to see where Bosh goes. If he goes anywhere but Miami, he is coming to chicago.

5. Lebron is waiting for cleveland to get a big time player, otherwise he is gone.

6. Bulls must be pretty confident they could get Bosh or else they would have gone after Boozer or Lee.

by K_yle33 on Jul 6, 2010 4:04 PM CDT reply actions

To point 6.

I think Boozer is probably comfortable waiting on the Bulls. As it’s probably his first choice. So the Bulls have no reason to rush to sign him. I think Boozer will wait as long as the Bulls want. He has a lot of options.

that’s a farce. They lose like 6-8million over the course of the first 5 years. That 6th year at 22+ million is not “lost” it’s just not included in the shorter max contract. They’ll make like 21 million instead of 22 that year.

So really, they lose no more than 10 million of a 100 million dollar contract.

You could say the same thing about Wade. Wade will at least make up some of the difference in endorsements, but Bosh won’t. Wade gets to be near his kids.

Wade/Bosh’s agent seems like a pro, and Wade seems like a pretty smart guy. At this point, maybe this scenario is a better bet … Chicago makes even more sense for James, imo, but he doesn’t seem like the most savvy businessman out there. Definitely acts his age (or younger).

Another Followup from Bucher
RicBucher Why wd Pierce sacrifice $$? Good question. Because he’s w/a team he KNOWS can play for a title if kept together. Wade/Bosh don’t know that.

LOL … that makes no sense. Wade/Bosh would have a far better shot at winning the title than Pierce will next year if they signed here.

Pierce took

less because no one was gonna pay him that much at his age as a FA.
And saying he’s gonna play w/ a team that he KNOWS can play for a title…
That would be the reason a Wade, Bosh, Lebron takes a paycut… But ain’t happening because teams WILL pay them more…

Yeah but they are trying to have it both ways

Especially Bosh. He wants max money but doesn’t want to play in Cleveland. Then he wants to play in a big market. Well why does he want a big market? For more exposure which brings more money. Well hell sometimes you have to give in order to receive. Truth is that all 3 of these guys should be running as fast as possible to Chicago and I’m not saying that as a homer. But they are trying to have it all which is why there’s now a stalemate.

That was the right play for Bosh, wherever he ends up. You don’t get to extort actual valuable assets (in the form of picks and players) in sign-and-trades; that’s not the way this works, Toronto.

by owenjs on Jul 6, 2010 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

No

I still think Bosh is ridiculously overated. Real good player, but one who can’t get his team into the playoffs on a regular basis. Noah does a lot of the dirty work that no one else wants to do and is a valuable piece. It’s not easy to find a guy who will pull in 12 rebounds a night and play at that high intensity.

But if it guarantees Bosh + Lebron or Bosh + Wade, I’d probably do it.

I think the assumption is too large

It is one thing to assume that Bulls + Bosh = LBJ/Wade, its quite another to assume that Bulls – Noah are as attactive. Its Rose and Noah that distinguish the Bulls from the Nets and Miami.

Don't trade Noah

It’s like a poker player folding every time someone goes all-in. Toronto has no say in this.

If refusing to include Noah pushes Bosh to Houston, so be it. I’d rather have the $100 million and borderline All-Star center in place.

My second

biggest motivation for getting Lebron at this point is to make Bucher look like a jackass. My top motivating factor is assemlbing a team that will approach 72 wins and win titles every year.

So I have a question about this sixth year thing...

At what point in a 5 year contract can you negotiate an extension? Because doesn’t that negate some of the risk?

If they’re afraid about this being their last big contract and that’s why they have to get all they can get, then an understanding that you only have to play well for a couple of years to get that big extension makes the point moot, right?

by wilsoneads on Jul 6, 2010 5:43 PM CDT reply actions

you can actually negotiate an extension

after 3 years, but there are limits on what you can add to a deal.

by Niwrad on Jul 6, 2010 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

does anyone have footage

to back up that boozer is a better defender than lee? Seriously, I didn’t watch too many of their games last season.

by SidM on Jul 6, 2010 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions

But Lee

has proven he can throw up 20 points a night without having any plays run for him, and without an elite PG. His rebounding is very solid. His defense will undoubtedly improve playing under Thibs and being protected by Noah. He won’t have to defend opposing C’s anymore either; he might fare better against PF’s.

That and he’s younger with no injury history, and much less mileage.

So, I’ll repeat what’s been said: Lee, a thousand times, Lee.

"Smith stripped. Smith stopped! Smith stopped again by Pippen!"

by ColonelFatheart on Jul 6, 2010 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Boozer in a heartbeat

He’s not a good defender, but he’s not atrocious like Lee. Plus he’s played with an elite PG for the last few years and would fit in quite well.

by Niwrad on Jul 6, 2010 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

i would rather have Lee

Don’t forget Boozer has had plenty of injuries and screwed Cleveland in his previous FA year. Also has a crazy wife.

I’m sick of Bosh’s act. He’s not a max salary guy nor is Joe Johnson or Amare. Don’t spend moeny just to spend money. You could bring in Lee and if the Deng trade is true you’d have plenty of money to sign some shooters and fill in the pieces. Wade and LBJ are staying put.

This whole FA scene is embarrassing to the NBA. Don’t think the owners aren’t watching this unfold and many are shaking their heads as the players “interview” teams and decide who will pay them $100 million. Its absurd. Unemployment near all time highs and these Bozo’s parading around makes my stomach turn.

by Duck99 on Jul 6, 2010 6:00 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Boozer

Lee is a good player, but I think his numbers last year were a little inflated because of D’Atoni’s system and the fact that he was by far the best player on an awful team, making him basically the only scoring option. He is the ultimate “numbers player” too, only plays one half of the floor.

Boozer has been a consistent #1 or #2 scoring threat on a winning team for years. He’s not without issues, either (the injury concern is there), but he’s played 67.5 games over the last 5 years and he’s only 28. He’s also more capable of being a league average defender at his position than Lee, I think.

A league source insists that Bosh has ruled out a sign-and-trade to Cleveland. With the Cavs unlikely to sign-and-trade for Boozer — whose bridge to Cleveland was torched when the Cavs made him a free agent in 2004 and he responded by signing with Utah — it appears likely that the Cavs will make no major changes this week around James, other than to pair him with a new coach in Byron Scott. Maybe Scott’s impressive résumé is enough to keep James in Cleveland. After all, the Cavs won 127 games the last two seasons, and Scott — who won three championship rings alongside Magic Johnson — promises to command more respect from James while installing an up-tempo offense to feature him in the open floor.

Deng trade doesn't dump much salary...

S&T Bosh + outright max Wade = $17.4 + $16.6 million = $34.0 mil cap space needed.

Bulls are at $29.1 mil now. Deng trade cuts out $1.6 mil. Taj + JJ combined make $2.8 mil. Total = $33.5 mil. I don’t believe we’d trade Deng, and still leave ourselves in a position where we’d have to lose Taj AND JJ and still not have enough for the full maxes.

by YaoPau on Jul 6, 2010 6:16 PM CDT reply actions

What kind of crackhead math is this

Bulls are at $31,861,826, take out Deng’s $11,355,850 that leaves $20,505,976. Take out Hinrich’s and the Bulls are at $11,505,576.

Put in the 34 needed would leave 44.5 million; which would be under cap. Plus Pryz and Bayless would give $55,203,576; just enough under cap.

Deng’s salary gives around a net 4 million in savings to stay under cap.

by NittanyCub on Jul 6, 2010 6:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Roster holds

6 players → 12-6 = 6 roster holds → $3 mil extra added to the payroll. $11.5 + $3 + $9.7 = $24.2 mil. $56.1 – 24.2 = 31.9 mil

$31.9 mil + 2.8 (for Taj + JJ) – 1.0 for cap holds = $33.7 mil. I think you’re looking at Pryz/Bayless 2010 salaries, not 2011.

by YaoPau on Jul 6, 2010 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

If Bosh doesn't want to play in cleveland, and raptors won't do a sign and trade with Heat,

then it looks like Bulls should have a great chance to get him. Deng, Gibson, James Johnson, and draft picks (Including a Charlotte first rounder) should be enough assets to work something out. As for Houston getting Bosh: I doubt he wants to play there, he was born in Dallas and has said he doesn’t want to play in dallas and also he said he doesn’t want to play second fiddle as a big guy—houston has Yao.

Sure he has been there plenty of times, but you would think the Heat would want him to meet them again there, and that DWADE would show him around a bit, kinda like he did in Chicago. It’s different when you are in a city knowing you could be living there…..then again maybe Bosh did this earlier in the summer before this got so crazy.

Bosh has not softened stance on Cleveland at all. Looks like he won’t be a Cav.

Why would he go to Miami but not Cleveland?

I know the weather is much nicer, but at least Cleveland cares about their basketball team.

I'd rather be in a crappy city

and play in front of 20k loud fans than in a nice city and 10k fans who don’t care.

or

an awesome city that would absolutely worship me if I won some rings.

"What do you think, I just dunked my whole career?" Jordan asked Henderson after making a 3.
"You’ve got to miss eventually," Henderson told him.
"That’s what Cleveland said," replied Jordan

Well.. that's two hours out of his day, 41 days a year.

The rest of the time he’s living in a shitty city in front of no crowd.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 6, 2010 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Because Cleveland is a complete shit hole?

Have you not been to Cleveland and Miami?? Are you kidding me here?

Malone...stripped by Michael, to the floor, stolen by M.J.! Michael the steal! 16 seconds left, Bulls down 1. Michael against Russell, 12 seconds...11...10. Jordan, Jordan a drive, hangs...fires...SCORE! He scores! The Bulls lead 87-86 with five and two tenths left, and now they're one stop away...
