"Sam has a tendency to denigrate reports coming from any reporter who didn’t also cover the day Naismith first put up the peach baskets." - snley
It appears this all comes down to:
LBJ wants his max contract from Cleveland.
Wade wants his max contract from Miami.
Bosh wants his max contract from Toronto.
Bosh is the only one of the three who is in play for a sign and trade.
If Bosh does not go to Miami or Cleveland, LeBron and Wade *really have to decide between a chance to win, and the money, the money, the money.
Has this not really been the lay of the landscape from the start? (Other than ’Bron putting it out there that he would prioritize winning over contract? Which now appears to have been exposed as smoke coming out of his billion-dollar ass??)
by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jul 6, 2010 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions
I think your last part is a bit off
If LeBron was prioritizing money, he’d sign with any of the other 5 teams, except maybe Miami which even with it’s no taxes, probably leads to the least marketing opportunities.
He’s clearly put playing near home ahead of everything else, money or winning.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 6, 2010 3:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Only the Cavs can give him the max money, and the sixth year.
And there’s no amount of players, picks and exceptions a team can give Cleveland to sign and trade LeBron. He’s big enough to keep his current endorsements even in the smaller market.
Certainly he figures to do better in a major market, and winning titles – but him trying to get Bosh to the Cavs so hard tells me he values his max contract deal most. At least at this moment in time. A moment that may or may not be recreated in three years – and most likely in Boston or LA, as Chicago and the Knicks will be capped out.
by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jul 6, 2010 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions
either his max contract
or Ohio being home, and not wanting to leave
You have to think the 6th year means less to him than Bosh, Wade, etc.
Because, A) at 25 he already has more money than most world leaders, and B) he’ll only be 30 when his next contract is up.
A max contract
Is nothing compared to the money he’d get in New York or Chicago.
So he loses 5 or 6 million the next years. There’s no way in hell he doesn’t recoup that by year 2 with the Bulls. He’s not staying for money. You can bash the guy all you want, but it’s obvious if he stays at home, it’s because he wants to be at home, it’s not financial.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 6, 2010 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions
but max money is guaranteed
endorsements aren’t a given. A bird in the hand, etc.
Also, I agree with your last point.
Unless he pulls a Tiger....
endorsements are a given.
by pooriejay on Jul 6, 2010 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Not bashing LeBron, taking the max money with a new labor agreement coming isn't dumb.
It’s just not what he was saying before the process started. He said championships were more important than a contract.
Or maybe you think LeBron + Bosh + the LeBronninares is a better situation to win titles that LeBron + Bosh + Rose + Noah + Gibson + whatever else the Bulls can put on the floor for the next 8 years or so of their collective primes?
There’s an argument to be made, I wouldn’t find it persuasive. If LeBron’s top priority was to stay home and win a title for his hometown, all he had to do was say so from the start, and turn the screws on the Cavs to get the Bosh S&T done.
by The Deputy Mayor of Rush Street on Jul 6, 2010 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions
The Max money though
Is still less money than he’d make in other revenue streams going to New Jersey, New York or the Bulls. So yeah, basketball contract, he’s making more, but overall, it’s clearly a financial loss for LBJ to stay at home.
by Grinder in Training on Jul 6, 2010 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions
I agree with you on that point.
But it doesn’t seem to jake with LeBron trying so hard to bring Bosh to Cleveland, when there appear to be better landing spots out there. I also happily concede that some desire to stay at home, and not disappoint his Cleveland fans is somewhere in his thinking.
Still doesn’t change the point I’m making. To reiterate the question you didn’t address:
Do you think LeBron + Bosh + the LeBronninares is a better situation to win titles that LeBron + Bosh + Rose + Noah + Gibson + whatever else the Bulls can put on the floor for the next 8 years or so of their collective primes?
(Or do you disagree with my point that LeBron started this whole free agent rodeo by stating that he was more interested in titles than maxing out his next playing contract?)

LeBron already knows that Wade/Bosh are going to sign with the Bulls
and Cleveland is working on finalizing a deal to land CP3/Okafor for Mo Williams/Jameson..
Deal saves NO approx 3 mil this year and 6 mil next year and then both players come off the books.
CLE shapes up as:
Paul
Parker/West
LeBron
Hickson/Verajao
Okafor
New Orleans as:
Collison
Mo Williams
Peja/Posey
Jameson
West
Bulls:
Rose
Wade
James Johnson + signed shooter (Korver?)
Bosh
Noah
LOL
New Orleans would have to be insane to make that trade.

New Orleans could get a lot more than that.
I think Prokhorov would bite on Favors for those two.
My highly sensitive strategically placed ultra sonic voice detector has just picked up a secret strategy meeting between LBJ, Wade and Bosh regarding their next moves.
LBJ – If I decide to stay with the Cav’s will either of you dudes follow me?
Bosh – It all depends on yada, yada, yada and where I finally get the most recognition for my many talents and pr skills. I’m tired of playing 2nd fiddle but then on the other hand, going for the brass ring may be a once in a lifetime yada, yada, yada. I’ll get back to you later. I have a strong urge to immediately get something to eat and twitter my fans
.
Wade – You know I love the weather and the fine ladies in South Beach but on the other hand, yada yada yada. And then Riley is like a stern father figure to me and the last thing I’d want to do is disappoint him, especially with his temper, so yada, yada, yada and don’t forget I still have to consider my kids before I yada, yada, yada, but do I really want to live so close to my crazy ex-wife? So when I prioritize the plusses and minuses of each option it almost seems I have no choice other than to yada, yada, yada.
LBJ – I love being king of Akron and loyalty is very important to me but I also want to bring home the trophy so weighing all my options it’s becoming clearer by the moment to me that my best move would be to yada, yada, yada regardless of what you dudes finally decide. Hopefully we can all agree on yada, yada, yada, yada. As soon as we finalize this pile of mush, I think it’s important that we make sure that Sam Smith should be the first to know.
All in unison – Let’s keep in touch and keep on yada, yadaing until this gets resolved. Chou.
If you can't answer a man's arguments, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.

Couple theories
1. The Bulls are waiting on this CAP number to see if they even need to trade deng. If so, maybe the do the portland trade.
1.5 Portland is talking to other teams about a trade and are waiting; thus, bulls have to wait to see if they can trade deng.
2. LBJ, Wade, and Bosh are also waiting on this number to see if 2/3 can play in chicago….
3. Chicago/Toronto are still ironing out a sign/trade for Bosh which is why it is taking forever cuz toronto still can’t decide what type of players they want back.
4. Wade is waiting to see where Bosh goes. If he goes anywhere but Miami, he is coming to chicago.
5. Lebron is waiting for cleveland to get a big time player, otherwise he is gone.
6. Bulls must be pretty confident they could get Bosh or else they would have gone after Boozer or Lee.
To point 6.
I think Boozer is probably comfortable waiting on the Bulls. As it’s probably his first choice. So the Bulls have no reason to rush to sign him. I think Boozer will wait as long as the Bulls want. He has a lot of options.

It's called diminishing utility of a shitload of money
a 30K difference between 100K and 130K does not equal the difference between 10 mil and 13 mil.
He is such an asshole. Just because the percentage is right, doesn’t mean the concept is. A person needs 20K just to scrape by in a given year. That gives him or her either 80 or 110K to save/make life more comfortable/give to others.
For Bosh, once you take away that 20K, he is left with:
9.98 vs 12.98 to save/make life more comfortable/give to others
Bucher is a douche.

He's also wrong about the percentages
Wade/Bosh wouldn’t be losing 30% by not S&Ting.
by RM on Jul 6, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
Good point. They don't even lose 30 million, either
that’s a farce. They lose like 6-8million over the course of the first 5 years. That 6th year at 22+ million is not “lost” it’s just not included in the shorter max contract. They’ll make like 21 million instead of 22 that year.
So really, they lose no more than 10 million of a 100 million dollar contract.
I met one of Hinrich's Professor's at Kansas, but he never met Hinrich.

More dumbing down than simplifying
Except that when Bosh/Wade are done with their max (w/o S&T), they’d be 31 and 33. If Ric Bucher thinks this is the last chunk of “$” he’ll ever see, not even mentioning endorsements, then he’s really, really, really fucking dumb.

Not to burst Buchers moronic bubble...
But the average Joe in this country makes closer to $30K rather than $100K…
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
Well this whole thing
is being held up because Bosh wants the world. He’s going to have to take less money and get it through endorsements from playing in Chicago
IMO
You could say the same thing about Wade. Wade will at least make up some of the difference in endorsements, but Bosh won’t. Wade gets to be near his kids.
Wade/Bosh’s agent seems like a pro, and Wade seems like a pretty smart guy. At this point, maybe this scenario is a better bet … Chicago makes even more sense for James, imo, but he doesn’t seem like the most savvy businessman out there. Definitely acts his age (or younger).

Another Followup from Bucher
RicBucher Why wd Pierce sacrifice $$? Good question. Because he’s w/a team he KNOWS can play for a title if kept together. Wade/Bosh don’t know that.
LOL … that makes no sense. Wade/Bosh would have a far better shot at winning the title than Pierce will next year if they signed here.
by RM on Jul 6, 2010 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions 2 recs
Pierce took
less because no one was gonna pay him that much at his age as a FA.
And saying he’s gonna play w/ a team that he KNOWS can play for a title…
That would be the reason a Wade, Bosh, Lebron takes a paycut… But ain’t happening because teams WILL pay them more…
Yeah but they are trying to have it both ways
Especially Bosh. He wants max money but doesn’t want to play in Cleveland. Then he wants to play in a big market. Well why does he want a big market? For more exposure which brings more money. Well hell sometimes you have to give in order to receive. Truth is that all 3 of these guys should be running as fast as possible to Chicago and I’m not saying that as a homer. But they are trying to have it all which is why there’s now a stalemate.

Shit...they are talking about Shaq still getting the full MLE
and he will be 38 next year…
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

It's not really giving up 30 million, it's giving up a year's worth of money
Saying that they’re leaving 30 million on the table is also saying that they’ll technically play for free for the season after their max contract is over.
They’re probably kissing away 10-15 million, not 30.
And, it's probably not even that much for Lebron.
And, for Bosh, multiple championships could actually get him legitimate endorsement money rather than table scraps.
and boost the value of his next contract. teams always overvalue guys who come with
a winning pedigree. look at james posey.
"If I was to answer that question honestly, I would have to lie to you."
- Isiah Thomas, when asked if any teams were interested in trading for Shandon Anderson
You could make an argument that Bosh won't get that 6th year money...
on a later extension. But, Lebron? Please. He’ll be making the max until he retires. Barring some horrid injury (which, you’d have to think he’s insured for anyways), Lebron is not sacrificing any money by leaving Cleveland. And, frankly, he’s probably securing a lot more long term with multiiple championships.
$4 million, not $30 million...especially for Lebron.

Cavs understand there are still looming threats to pry LeBron, but getting Bosh isn’t make or break on keeping LBJ.
If, after all this, LeBron just stays with the Cavs without the team really adding any other pieces,
then he really does deserve to be a coulda-been champ. Granted, he’s still only 25, and as the Lakers’ Gasol robbery trade shows, there are all sorts of things that can improve his situation there.
But … if the Bulls can get Wade and Bosh/Boozer/Lee, Orlando continues to be in the conversation, and Boston stays playoff relevant for another year or two, it’ll be very hard for LeBron to make up that difference.

Would have left Wade with no choice but to leave. I see Bosh/Wade in Miami and Lebron in Cleveland as much more likely.

who does toronto get from miami in a sign/trade that they'd accept??
i think thats another hold up…..i think the only place toronto will accept a sign/trade is from chicago….but bosh doesn’t want to commit until either wade or lebron play in chicago
I guess the good news there
is that I don’t think any team is really that strong after that. Adding Boozer and a shooter or two would put us up with those guys in a year or two.
Bosh telling Cleveland to fuck off (if true) is tremendous for us. I have to think that Toronto cooked up the whole thing to gain enough leverage to pry Noah away from us. That was the right play for Bosh, wherever he ends up. You don’t get to extort actual valuable assets (in the form of picks and players) in sign-and-trades; that’s not the way this works, Toronto.
yep, thats what i though when this broke
doesnt make it true, but just felt like somthing dodgy was going on.
Should we just trade Noah?
You have to think if we do, and get Bosh, that there’s a solid chance either Wade or LeBron will come here. No? Faulty logic?
With a gun to your head, you make the trade. Bosh is better than Noah. But, so far, Toronto’s gun isn’t loaded.
No
I still think Bosh is ridiculously overated. Real good player, but one who can’t get his team into the playoffs on a regular basis. Noah does a lot of the dirty work that no one else wants to do and is a valuable piece. It’s not easy to find a guy who will pull in 12 rebounds a night and play at that high intensity.
But if it guarantees Bosh + Lebron or Bosh + Wade, I’d probably do it.
The faulty logic is
why would Bosh want to do that?
Why would he want to come to Chicago (which he has clearly said he wants to) and potentially play with LeBron or Wade (which he has clearly said he wants to)?
Why would he want to join a team
and force his new team to trade away their 2nd best player? If he wanted to come to Chicago, he could just tell Colangelo “I’ve made up my mind”, you can get Taj & JJ back in a deal or I’m walking.

I think the assumption is too large
It is one thing to assume that Bulls + Bosh = LBJ/Wade, its quite another to assume that Bulls – Noah are as attactive. Its Rose and Noah that distinguish the Bulls from the Nets and Miami.
Don't trade Noah
It’s like a poker player folding every time someone goes all-in. Toronto has no say in this.
They can’t trade Bosh anywhere he doesn’t want to go, and he shouldn’t want to go to a Bulls team without Noah or Rose.
If refusing to include Noah pushes Bosh to Houston, so be it. I’d rather have the $100 million and borderline All-Star center in place.
I will never doubt the Chairman again.
I only make the trade if Wade is a lock.
3 all-stars on 1 team? Yes please!
I keep telling myself this to buoy my spirits:
Go ahead, LeBron, stay in Cleveland. The Bulls will pull off a trade for Bosh and then sign Wade, who’ll forgo the “$30 million” to come home and keep his kids’ lives somewhat stable. And then, LeBron, you won’t even win a division title.
I like to tell myself that.

Deal is being reported as being done
no link, no fact
Deng might be your cup of tea..me personally? I don't like pieces of sh*t in my tea.
Sorry I'm an idiot
Brian Wheeler the Blazers PBP guy was just on CTL, probably just shooting his mouth off but he did mention that he thought the deal was done.
Can someone summarize the advantages of the proposed Deng deal?
Just more cap space? We can sign two FA’s at max? Or is it more compex than that?
Depends on what we clear
Can sign 2 at max or 3 with a sign and trade no one wants Deng though
You're no better than Broussard!

Yeah , yeah I know. I just got a little too excited.
And if true
I have to believe they have two max contracts lined up. No way they gut this team even more without a committment.
That means
there’s another deal in the works then? Like Bosh S/T?

I would hope so
Can’t fathom they’d drop Deng for backups unless they had someone to replace him.
Yep
There’s no way they would risk all their jobs without a verbal commitment from one of the big-3.

I guess probably both.
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

So I have a question about this sixth year thing...
At what point in a 5 year contract can you negotiate an extension? Because doesn’t that negate some of the risk?
If they’re afraid about this being their last big contract and that’s why they have to get all they can get, then an understanding that you only have to play well for a couple of years to get that big extension makes the point moot, right?
you can actually negotiate an extension
after 3 years, but there are limits on what you can add to a deal.
The longer you wait, the more you can add…
… under the current CBA.
Won't matter
The owners and union will have a new CBA next summer if they can agree before the deadline.
I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

Not as bad
Seriously, if you can find some Lee games online, watch. He’s so bad.
does anyone have footage
to back up that boozer is a better defender than lee? Seriously, I didn’t watch too many of their games last season.
But Lee
has proven he can throw up 20 points a night without having any plays run for him, and without an elite PG. His rebounding is very solid. His defense will undoubtedly improve playing under Thibs and being protected by Noah. He won’t have to defend opposing C’s anymore either; he might fare better against PF’s.
That and he’s younger with no injury history, and much less mileage.
So, I’ll repeat what’s been said: Lee, a thousand times, Lee.

Look at his coaches...
Isiah and Dan Tony…not exactly defensive stalwarts.
Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.
If it's only one of them, I guess Lee.
But if either one is paired with LeBron or Wade, I’d take either one, although Lee is a little younger and healthier.

But I seem to be the minority on this blog.
I think Boozer is better when he’s healthy, but I agree that he’s older and more injury prone.

Yeah, I'm a little torn.
I don’t like to crap all over Boozer myself. I would be happy if Boozer joined the team.

by ColonelFatheart on Jul 6, 2010 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Boozer in a heartbeat
He’s not a good defender, but he’s not atrocious like Lee. Plus he’s played with an elite PG for the last few years and would fit in quite well.
i would rather have Lee
Don’t forget Boozer has had plenty of injuries and screwed Cleveland in his previous FA year. Also has a crazy wife.
I’m sick of Bosh’s act. He’s not a max salary guy nor is Joe Johnson or Amare. Don’t spend moeny just to spend money. You could bring in Lee and if the Deng trade is true you’d have plenty of money to sign some shooters and fill in the pieces. Wade and LBJ are staying put.
This whole FA scene is embarrassing to the NBA. Don’t think the owners aren’t watching this unfold and many are shaking their heads as the players “interview” teams and decide who will pay them $100 million. Its absurd. Unemployment near all time highs and these Bozo’s parading around makes my stomach turn.
by Duck99 on Jul 6, 2010 6:00 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Boozer
Lee is a good player, but I think his numbers last year were a little inflated because of D’Atoni’s system and the fact that he was by far the best player on an awful team, making him basically the only scoring option. He is the ultimate “numbers player” too, only plays one half of the floor.
Boozer has been a consistent #1 or #2 scoring threat on a winning team for years. He’s not without issues, either (the injury concern is there), but he’s played 67.5 games over the last 5 years and he’s only 28. He’s also more capable of being a league average defender at his position than Lee, I think.
I think Wade will stay in Miami, mostly because of home ties and the Max deal.

Guess the Nets won't have a problem selling 2012 season tickets
But I still have a hard time believing he’d leave that much money on the table. The new CBA is supposed to really gut player contracts. He could be leaving $30-$50 million over those extra 4 years on the table.
I always though the 6th year of a max was overrated for elite stars.
But, years 3-6? That seems ludicrous. Not to mention I think he goes 2 more years without a ring. Maybe this is his compromise to Ohio.
Makes no sense
The Cavs supporting cast is guaranteed to suck the next two years.

A league source insists that Bosh has ruled out a sign-and-trade to Cleveland. With the Cavs unlikely to sign-and-trade for Boozer — whose bridge to Cleveland was torched when the Cavs made him a free agent in 2004 and he responded by signing with Utah — it appears likely that the Cavs will make no major changes this week around James, other than to pair him with a new coach in Byron Scott. Maybe Scott’s impressive résumé is enough to keep James in Cleveland. After all, the Cavs won 127 games the last two seasons, and Scott — who won three championship rings alongside Magic Johnson — promises to command more respect from James while installing an up-tempo offense to feature him in the open floor.

Deng trade doesn't dump much salary...
S&T Bosh + outright max Wade = $17.4 + $16.6 million = $34.0 mil cap space needed.
Bulls are at $29.1 mil now. Deng trade cuts out $1.6 mil. Taj + JJ combined make $2.8 mil. Total = $33.5 mil. I don’t believe we’d trade Deng, and still leave ourselves in a position where we’d have to lose Taj AND JJ and still not have enough for the full maxes.
I think the 29.1 mil. of cap space may be wrong.
I thought we had at least 30 mil.
by ChiTownSportsMaster on Jul 6, 2010 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I put that in there to say even if we dumped those two as well we still wouldn’t have enough for both maxes.

What kind of crackhead math is this
Bulls are at $31,861,826, take out Deng’s $11,355,850 that leaves $20,505,976. Take out Hinrich’s and the Bulls are at $11,505,576.
Put in the 34 needed would leave 44.5 million; which would be under cap. Plus Pryz and Bayless would give $55,203,576; just enough under cap.
Deng’s salary gives around a net 4 million in savings to stay under cap.
Roster holds
6 players → 12-6 = 6 roster holds → $3 mil extra added to the payroll. $11.5 + $3 + $9.7 = $24.2 mil. $56.1 – 24.2 = 31.9 mil
$31.9 mil + 2.8 (for Taj + JJ) – 1.0 for cap holds = $33.7 mil. I think you’re looking at Pryz/Bayless 2010 salaries, not 2011.
The cap is 68 million for lux tax stay under and your fine
The lakers salary last season 93 million

If Bosh doesn't want to play in cleveland, and raptors won't do a sign and trade with Heat,
then it looks like Bulls should have a great chance to get him. Deng, Gibson, James Johnson, and draft picks (Including a Charlotte first rounder) should be enough assets to work something out. As for Houston getting Bosh: I doubt he wants to play there, he was born in Dallas and has said he doesn’t want to play in dallas and also he said he doesn’t want to play second fiddle as a big guy—houston has Yao.

Considering Deng’s underachieving career so far, he would be a perfect fit in that team! It seems that Portland has been filled with guys like him in the last 15 years or so!
Great move
We get two guys with expiring contracts next year (Prz expiring, and Bay team option). Great material for S/T. I think with this, we have enough material to make 2 S/T if that necessary
Right now, and I am sure most of you agree, I wan't whoever is there.
As the old king in the LOTR The Two Towers said before the battle at Helm’s Deep: “How did it come to this?!?” LOL. Let’s pray we get something good, whatever that is.
i'm nervous about trading deng
if we’re not getting bron. who will play SF? and i say this not just cause i’m a deng fan heh.

With a potential sign and trade…..I am sure Noah has sold him considering bulls wanted Noah to talk to lebron. Noah is perfect for Bosh…..Toronto rightly playing Miami/chi against each other…our chances probably improved today.

This is probably the truth
But there’d be a lot of interest I think if you are Toronto if you could get: Taj Gibson Bayliss Pryzbilla and 2 1sts for Bosh.
Sure, I don't disagree with that

A little surprised Bosh isn't going to Miami......
Sure he has been there plenty of times, but you would think the Heat would want him to meet them again there, and that DWADE would show him around a bit, kinda like he did in Chicago. It’s different when you are in a city knowing you could be living there…..then again maybe Bosh did this earlier in the summer before this got so crazy.
at this point, even if LeBron shows up on TV and commits to the bulls
Im not going to believe him. So much misinformation going around
