I'm getting giddy
I thought his defense was terrific," Thibodeau said. “I thought he was great on the ball, and I also thought his team defense was excellent, so I was obviously pleased with that. And offensively, he’s into the paint very easily, so I thought he was terrific at getting the ball up the floor, running the team, getting the ball into the paint, making plays, and he knocked a couple shots down.”

Nothing better for Derrick
than to have coach Thibs following him around all summer, constantly in his ear about what he needs to do to improve, and pointing out his defensive lapses.
You become a great defender (great at anything really) when you don’t have to think about what you’re doing and it has become instinct.
So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

LOL at "following him around all summer"
I have a mental image of Thibs running around behind Rose, popping up randomly wherever he goes.
Rose in Turkey, entering his hotel room. Opens the drawer to put away his stuff. Suddenly out pops Thibs. “Defense, Derrick! Defense!”
Rose in LA, going to train with Westbrook, Evans, Mayo, et al. Suddenly Thibs bursts in the gym “Get the ball in the paint, Derrick! The paint!”
Rose back in Chicago, walking home after a long summer and relaxing for a few days before training camp. As he opens the door, Thibs pops out of his house “Can’t rest now Derrick! Turn around! Practice, practice!”
“Damn coach, you crazy.”

Oh of course...
But maybe not both at the same time…

I disagree
great defense comes from NOT following your instincts and forcing yourself to react only when necessary.

AGREED
as a guy who loves to play defense i agree…instinct is to jump when a guy does a pump fake, being able to control that urge is great defense. Instinct is taking a swipe when your opponent does a high dribble, great defense is keeping your hands in the ready position and forcing your opponent to go towars his weak side and knowing that the high dribble is designed to set up for a crossover….wholeheartedly agree with your premise
I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

One of my pet peeves
is when people say they disagree, when they obviously don’t understand what you’re saying. Nothing in either of your statements actually disagree with mine.
I am saying that that Derrick needs to train himself until he has the right instincts and that training camp would be too late to start practicing.
The tendency of the good defenders to not jump is as much an instinct as for the poor defenders to leave their feet. The good defenders don’t sit there and think, " He’s about to shoot, don’t jump, wait until you’re sure he’s actually taking the shot". If you have to think about whether you’re going to jump or not, the defender has already scored on you or driven past you.
The entire point of my previous post is that Rose has train himself out of the wrong instincts and practice until the right habits become instinct.
So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

The right instinct won't 'become' instincs, the fuck are you talking about?
Staying down on a pump fake isn’t INSTINCT. It’s SELF CONTROL. You could play basketball for 80 years, but someone will always be able to get you on a pump fake unless you control yourself. Instincts just don’t morph because you’ve been practicing enough I add caps because you either don’t know what you’re talking about, or don’t play basketball competitively.

This is awesome.
and not
“Dude, Starburst is awesome”, kind of awesome
Im talking about…
“The power of the tsunami was simply awesome” kind of awesome.
'The Decision' : 12% of people don't like me.
so
this quote is leading me to believe that DR has gotten A LOT better this summer.
so here’s what’s going on: he says he finally has a consistent 3 pt shot to take away scrutiny from his lackadaisical D the first 2 years, when in reality his D has rounded into form via his workouts in santa monica with evans and westbrook (and also hanging out with thibs for 20 hours a day)… thus enabling the PR machine to take off on his 3 pt shot without ever noticing his improved D so he can continue to fly under the radar.
genius derrick, genius.
