Hey, he's getting better!

Pretty soon he’s gonna be touring the country giving motivational speeches

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jul 20, 2010 4:55 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

It seems like someone told him to stop giving the canned athlete speech and just be himself.

The line about it getting grimy out there sounded like a guy talking to his friends, not someone giving the usual tropes.

He’s also smiling a lot more and keeping eye contact rather than looking at the floor.

The Bulls will win 50 games this year and (hopefully) the Central Division for a top 3 seed.

He's probably having a blast at the camp. Competitive basketball and half the people there are your buddies?

Let’s just hope he doesn’t make a pact with KD and Westbrook in 2012.

First thing that jumped out to me

I wouldnt be surprised if multiple teams outplay them up front. Power Forwards aren’t that great either. David Lee, and Kevin Love might be ideal for the international game, though.

So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

I would not hate on David Lee or Kevin Durant as the four...

In international ball, those two will make an impact…the centers will be fine, as they are going to be asked primarily to defend…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on Jul 20, 2010 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions

its tough, because i think all Team USA's best players play on the perimeter

i’d take -

Billups/ Rose / Rondo
Westbrook / Rose / Curry
Durant / Iguodala
Granger / Odom
Lopez / Chandler / Love

Last cuts would be Lee, Evans and Wallace. Lee loses to Love because Love has better range on his jumper and loses to Odom because of the Odom’s D; Evans is too much of a 1 on 1 player at this stage of his career; Wallace just doesn’t have the same multitude of skills as Iggy and can’t shoot like Curry, so I leave him off the team. I don’t like any of the young 2’s Gordon or Mayo, and given the size of Rose and Westbrook, I would just play them at the 2. Curry would also get minute at the 2 as the designated shooter.

It was tough, but I had to move Rose to the bench. I think Team USA’s only chance to win is with ball pressure from its guards and Billups and Westbrook do that better than Rose. Rondo may be better than Billups but I think he has the potential to really struggle because of his lack of a jumper.

by Basketball Smurf on Jul 20, 2010 8:00 PM CDT reply actions

hmmm

maybe I take Evans over Rondo for his ability to play the 2 and more importantly defend the 2. Its a touch choice to make picking a guard rotation that makes sense. These guys are really close in ability.

by Basketball Smurf on Jul 20, 2010 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions

rondo is so long, and deceptively strong that i think he can guard most international 2s.

every time i see a bigger guy (even kobe) try to post rondo up, rondo ends up stripping them and they dont get much out of it. i think usa could get away with rondo guarding 2s. as for his shooting…..

I’d hate to be picking the cuts.. Javal McGee is easy though.

by jf111847 on Jul 20, 2010 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions

OTOH, he's awesome and only getting better.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

by tyger1147 on Jul 21, 2010 9:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Rondo and Westbrook would make for an interesting back court running a full court press

They’d have to press like hell and create lots of turnovers to make up for the lack of shooting, but I could see it working in short bursts

Well, isn't what LeBron did last night the living embodiment of The Secret, leaving millions on the table and turning himself into a hometown villain, all for the sake of winning?

by snley on Jul 21, 2010 9:04 AM CDT up reply actions

He'ss shooting around 44% out to 22 feet

and that’s on ~7 attempts per game. Yikes.

by Stacey_Is_King on Jul 22, 2010 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Why not make a team to create turnovers and dominate the break?

Rondo
Rose
Durant
Granger
Lopez

I think if you start Rose and Rondo together, you’ll have pretty much the best backcourt in the tournament. Rose can get open against pretty much anyone, plus if his 3-point shooting has really improved, he’ll have plenty of great looks. If Rose plays off the ball, you can pretty much pass it to him in any manner and he’ll finish over anybody. Rondo and Rose compliment each other well, plus you can do anything you want on the fastbreak.

by Stacey_Is_King on Jul 20, 2010 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

i thought the international game stressed more than anything the ability to shoot and stretch the floor

somehow rondo’s jumper is going to be in question here. id rather we take curry or tyreke to pair with rose

Blech. We might be in trouble at Worlds this summer. Then again, if we lose, it’ll make Lebron, Bosh, and Wade look even worse in the public eye for backing out.

I think they are televised

They’re just broadcast at shitty times, but I think the medal games will get replayed on espn during a better timespot. I think i remember I being like that in 2006. At the very least, there’ll be a 3-minute blurb about it on sportscenter. And if we lose, it only takes one bill simmons type to point the finger and get the ball rolling.

Pat Riley is the devil.

I have my doubts about Derrick making this team

There’s no doubt he’s as talented, or more, than anyone on the roster, and hopefully coaches see that. But I’ve noticed that, in All-Star games (his first, and the rookie-soph game) he tends to defer a little too easily, and lay in the weeds rather than trying to dominate.

It feels like his idea of pg play in those situations is to hand the ball off and let other people shine, as opposed to getting his. I just wonder if he’ll stand out enough for coaches to say “:We need to bring that guy”. Personally I don’t care. It would be nice to see him get a little recognition, but I’d almost prefer that he’s fully rested and ready to go once the season starts.

Superteams suck.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jul 21, 2010 1:19 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Considering the competition pool includes the likes of Javale McGee, I like his chances

The guard pool is a little bit deeper but I still don’t see the guys in charge picking a Stephen Curry or Eric Gordon over Rose. And besides, don’t you want a deferential PG on a team full of stars? The only real reason why I could see them not taking Rose would be a concern about the effectiveness of his jumper, since in international play, hitting the 3-pointer is more crucial. But the guys Rose is competing against (Westbrook, Evans, and Rondo fight with Rose for 2-3 spots and Billups is a lock IMO) have an even weaker jumper.

Pat Riley is the devil.

My picks

Rose, Billups, Rondo, Durant, Wallace, Granger, Lee, Love, Brook Lopez, Chandler, Odom, Mayo.

Pat Riley is the devil.

by Poloplaya14 on Jul 21, 2010 2:08 AM CDT reply actions

The last cuts are Westbrook, Evans, and Iguodala

You can’t go with 4 PGs and Westbrook is the 4th best PG in the bunch, if you ask me. Mayo gets the nudge over Evans and Iguodala to put another shooter on the team. An argument could be made for dropping Lee, Love, or Odom for Evans/Iguodala and going with a smaller, quicker team, but I like Lee, Love and Odom because all of them are excellent at making long 2s, which all of a sudden are worth 3 points in the international game.

Pat Riley is the devil.

i think curry might get a nod over rondo for his shooting.

the international game stresses shooting so much that i think rondo might hurt if he hasnt improved

Of the true guards

Rondo is also clearly the best defender. With a young team like this I think you have to worry at least as much about the defensive effort as whether they can score. As long as they make reasonably smart line up choices I think he’ll do all right.
