BlogABron 7/2 Morning roundup - Warrick to PHO, Amare gone? Pierce back with Celtics

Just came across this on the tweet-box, the Bulls have lost their first incumbent player, with Hakim Warrick* signing a 4 yr, $18m deal with the Phoenix Suns, who just signed Channing Frye to a multiyear deal the day before.

That, and other reports of deteriorating contract talks, suggest Amare Stoudemire is done in Phoenix. The Knicks are reportedly pushing hard for Amare to help their LeBron (who's meeting with the Heat this morning) pitch.

Elsewhere, Paul Pierce, who just opted out of the final year of his contract, is going to return to the Celtics for a 4 year deal. More money for Pierce, lower cap number for the Celtics.

*I suppose Warrick would've been nice to keep around at the minimum after our super-team is built. Clearly this deal from Phoenix is way way more than that. Pretty astounding for a guy that couldn't get more than a 1-year contract as an FA the year before, and it's not like he had the greatest year, despite media proclamations making him out to be 'Tyrus Thomas but not a jerk' early in his Bulls tenure. Always good for a highlight dunk, though.

For everyone railing against the evils of overpaying

Lets hear it for the suns refusing to overpay amare so they can replace him with warrick who is a fraction of the player amare is. If phx thought amare was bad on d wait til they get a load of warrick. This is the problem with not overpaying— either overpay or stay mired on mediocrity. All of a sudden a team on the verge of the finals takes a giant step back by not overpaying.

Totally agree.

For an extra 6 mil/yr, they could have kept Amare. Note: Amare > Frye + Warrick + 6 Mil

by Reacharounder on Jul 2, 2010 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Doesn't Amare want the max?

18M – (18M/4 = 4.5M) = extra 13M a year. Even if you add Frye’s 5yr/30M contract to that calculus, you’re still talking 8M a year more, and that’s just in the first year. Amare’s raises would be bigger and his contract would last an extra year than either one (and two years more than Warrick’s).

I’m not saying it was the right decision, but it was certainly a weightier financial decision than you make it out to be.

by arjoseph on Jul 2, 2010 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

in a sense,

didn’t they overpay for both frye and warrick? seems to me like they did

Not really...

Frye is an average NBA player who got paid an average NBA salary ($5M per) while Warrick is below and got paid a below average salary ($4.5M per).

Now Rudy Gay, that guy got overpaid!!!

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on Jul 2, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

that is ridiculous

Frye had one good season and couldn’t off the bench for NY or Portland. Warrick is just flat out terrible. They way overpaid for both guys.

by Basketball Smurf on Jul 2, 2010 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I just came in here to say the exact same thing

Why not tell Warrick and Frye to fuck off and max out Stoudemire (not fully)? At least he’s proven to be a damn good player that can keep you competitive. I think GM’s enjoy making these sneaky “little” deals way too much. They outsmart themselves. Pay the talent and worry about the other shit later.

He may not be married, but he's got plenty of Thibo-hoes.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jul 2, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

But, a Nash-less Amare...

is not worth the max. And, Nash is not far away from retirement. So, yes, they are now in re-building mode. But, it’s better than being in mediocrity purgatory where you get no substantial draft picks and get eliminated in the 1st round every year.

Wade could end up in no man's land if he's not careful

Let’s say the following scenario plays out

  • Bosh commits to the Bulls
  • Amare signs with NY or NJ
  • Lebron likes Rose/Bosh/Noah and joins Bulls

Then Wade is still a FA with Lee and Boozer as the best free agent available.

2 days? More like weeks since the Cavs left the playoffs.

There’s not much real information coming out and there’s way too much money in FA contracts. It’s pretty interesting to me that teams can pay roughly 30% of their cap figure to one player. I’m not sure why it bugs me so much, but it does. Maybe it’s because it’s such a big deal whereas in the NFL and MLB it is less world-changing.

i think you make sense

Hockey FA is fast and furious. There’s suspense, but it unfolds quickly.

Another thing that distinguishes the NBA FA period is that individual players are so damn important in basketball. While it’s fantastic to get the big names on your squad in football, hockey and baseball, it’s not as gut wrenching as in the NBA, where you’re limited to 3-5 players that could get your team over the “hump”.

by aeroplane on Jul 2, 2010 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah. I'm not as into basketball as I am the other sports, I admit.

So it took me a while to realize why I was aggravated … it’s because it matters so much. If the Bulls get shafted/shaft themselves in this FA period, then it’s another few years of suckitude.

Meh. Who is good in Cleveland?

I could see them taking Deng back in an S & T.
Williams – Gibson
Parker – West
Deng – Green
Jamison – Hickson
Verajao
isn’t a horrible team. It’s about as good as they can do. I’d feel sorry for Deng, though.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

It's not horrible, but it's not good

30-35 wins possibly. The downgrade from James to Deng is severe, you’re now expecting Mo Williams to become a good playmaker, which he’s never been.

It doesn’t matter for Cleveland. James leaving means basketball is over in that city for a while. Bulls fans felt some kind of obligation to keep renewing their season tickets because of the 6 titles and years of exciting play, I don’t see that kind of attachment in Cleveland.

"severe" as in how?

I’m not sure it’s not a 25 win difference.

I think it might be a 25 loss difference....

At the very least a 20 loss difference…which would put the Cavs at .500.

The problem with that type of thinking is the East is going to be dramatically different this season if Amare and Boozer come over along with collections of talent Chicago and possibly Miami, New York, etc…its tough to project anything for next season at this point….

But, I think Lebron over Deng is 15-20 wins pretty easily (imagine him on the Bulls last season)

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

I can't see them doing a S/T at all

let alone to the Bulls.

Even if it made the most sense for them given the circumstances, probably best to just call LeBron’s bluff on taking less $, and it’s not like they forfeit that for Luol Deng of all players.

Though if LeBron is committed to leaving, there aren’t a whole lot of good scenarios for Cleveland. But I can’t see them doing LeBron and their rivals a favor.

by SouthernCub on Jul 2, 2010 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions

oh well

I guess I just can’t see LBJ playing a bluff on him. I don’t see him negotiating publicly, or going back on the decision. It’s $6 million over the five years. The way I see it, he weighs his options, he makes his decision. He’s leaving (or staying). Then, Cleveland can either do what’s best for their team or not, just to spite him.

If they say, “Nah, we know Deng would be good for us and we can’t do crap in getting free agents anyway, but we’re mad you’re leaving, so screw you, we’re going to gladly suck!!!”, I just can’t see that as any sort of positive. Especially, if he makes the decision on the 5th. He can always say, they’ll sign me first, so I’m leaving no matter what.

I don’t know the psyche of Cleveland fans, though.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Well, they can't actually sign anyone until July 8...

so “moving fast” on Bosh doesn’t necessarily create a cap space issue. If they get a commitment from Bosh (via sign-and-trade) then they pitch that to James when he comes.

Then, they sign James first and then do the sign-and-trade for Bosh.

Well, perhaps they're trying to improve their roster as further enticement to LeBron.

If they can get Bosh, or even Boozer or Lee, today, that augments their argument that their roster is the best one he can sign with.

So right now

It seems like our best case scenario is to get one superstar player. I don’t see a Deng S&T happening. It seems like we could get LeBron and some other really good pieces or Bosh and some really good pieces. The Raps don’t appear interested in what we have to offer for S&T, so that’s almost out of the question. Could we not sign him outright, or is he going to hold out for more cash?

I really think the order in which he is seeing the teams is the preferenece to where he wants to play. Cle being last out of respect to the Org. Everyone is saying, july 3rd is when he makes his choice and that so happens to be the day he meets with the bulls and cavs

The theory is also similar ...

Is Cavs are last, so after hearing them again, he tells them"thank you for the years together, but I have decide to join the Chicago Bulls. I wanted to be the first person to tell you this. I would like to work out a sign and trade to maximize my earnings and my new team status, and I would hope you will accommodate this request"

Then James says, “Luol Deng isn’t a LBJ but it is perceived by some as nice compliment player and maybe you can then turn around and use him in a sign and trade to acquire another FA on the market.”

Lastly “Best wishes and our time spent together has truly been a noteworthy adventure”

If it’s between Chi-Cle, I think we take him. The East is getting much, much tougher next season, and the Cavs will be even older. All they can do is appeal to emotion. And it’s not a matter of Lebron being loyal to the cavs – hell no. James has made that team worth watching, in fact, he’s the only reason they’ve been worth watching. If anything, the Cavs owe Lebron.

The appeal to emotion is going to be this: we neeeeeed you. We need you so bad, Lebron. And after looking at the legit organizations out there, at the end of the day…adios.

Or so I hope.

ESPN insider writes about the Bulls pitch to LeBron...
As the Bulls’ meeting with LeBron approaches on Saturday, K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune adds a little more detail on their pitch Friday.

“Sources said the Bulls are considering bringing local business leaders from Fortune 500 companies to the meeting to appeal to James’ business sense,” he wrote. “At the very least, ideas on how to market James globally via local businesses will be pitched. But the biggest sales points — to James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh — center on basketball, the city, the Bulls’ rich history and worldwide brand recognition and a ready-to-win core featuring Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah.”

No defense, bad rebounding, bad attitutude, no post game. He is the anti-Thibodeau power forward. A worse fit than Lee or Boozer if you put any credence into what Thibs said – and I do.

I've always like Amare

But I agree that his is not the best fit for this team going forward, regardless of the other free-agent acquired (plus his maximum-salary is non-trivially higher).

I’m really warming up to David Lee at PF if we can lock down LeBron, or even Wade, as unlikely as that may be.

14/8. But let’s be real. Everyone struggles against the Lakers. The point of Boozer is this – at some point you must get better. If you can’t get the best (bosh), you get better (boozer). And who in the east would be able to stifle them. An interior of Noah/Asik and Boozer/Gibson would be among the best in the East.

Perfect? No. But we’ve got to arm Derrick Rose with the best weapons we can, even if they’re not perfect.

Best Case Worst Scenario

Been thinking about what happens if we whiff on Lebron and Bosh (and Wade), what’s the best case but still realistic scenario that leaves us in good position and no one else in dominant one?

Lebron feels guilty, stays with Cavs
Bosh goes to Miami with Wade
- Bulls trade 2cd round pick, use cap space to absorb Michael Beasley, clearing roster-filling cap space (Haslem, etc) for Heat
Amare signs with Knicks
Boozer signs with Nets
Celtics sign Allen, Pierce; Mavs sign Dirk
Bulls sign David Lee, Ronnie Brewer, JJ Reddick to fair contracts

No team is stacked.
Bulls are young — Deng is oldest player in top 8 — balanced, not defensively strong but interesting offensively with scoring off the bench, they keep Hornets draft pick, have two of the best raw talents under 22 in Rose/Beasley and have flexibility to plug a star into roster when they get the chance …what’s the difference between the Bulls at that point and OKC, for instance (Durant better than Rose, but not by tons):

Rose
Brewer
Deng
Lee
Noah
-
Beasley
Reddick
Taj

No one wants to whiff on the big three, but in scenario above no team where no team scores big I still like our future.

by RichKarp on Jul 2, 2010 12:33 PM CDT reply actions

Not a bad point, I guess

It would just be monumentally disappointing. Plus, I think Mia would eventually build the pieces to dominate the east for several years. I don’t ever seeing that team making it to the Finals.

No reason for them to lie

They have said they will do a sign and trade, but they don’t want Deng as a piece. It makes perfect sense because they already have a SF locked up for 4 years to a big contract. There was never any reason to believe they would want Deng if you just look at their roster.

The problem with that logic is that it assumes the Raptors have much leverage at all.

Which they don’t. If Bosh says that he wants to go to the Bulls so work out a S&T or else I’m going somewhere else and you get nothing, I’m very doubtful that the Raptors are going to turn down what we’re offering. They would be dumb to let Bosh go for nothing when he’s so willing to help them get something. They may say “we don’t want Deng” now because he’s not their ideal situation and they’re trying to exert what little influence they have. But when push comes to shove, and Bosh makes his decision to leave, they’ll have to make a decision whether they want any return at all vs. nothing in return. At the very least, Deng would be an asset they could try to trade down the road. We would probably also throw in JJ and maybe some picks. They would be dumb to turn it down. As we’ve seen with the dumb-ass deals that have been made the past two days, his contract isn’t toxic at all. AND he’s better than Turkoglu, so if they care about the quality of their team at all, they’d jump at the upgrade.

If Lebron comes here

then trading Deng for cap space shouldn’t be that hard. The Clippers were said to be willing to take him for a second rounder. It makes sense for the Bulls to hold off on dealing their SF of the present until they lock up their SF of the future.

Amar’e Stoudemire(notes) and the New York Knicks are making progress in talks on a five-year, $100 million max contract and a deal could be completed as soon as Friday, league sources told Y! Sports.

The framework of the deal, which would give Stoudemire a $17.2 million starting salary next season, is in place and the two sides are expected to talk again soon, sources said. Stoudemire is expected to travel to New York on Saturday.

The Knicks and Stoudemire aren’t each other’s first choices, but Stoudemire wanted a fifth year guaranteed and the Knicks needed to have something to show for years of losing and working to clear cap space.

However, in this market, they’ll get the max or close.

Lee's max is actually

only around 12 million I think. Which is why we could get Lebron + Lee without trading away anything. Which is why I kinda want that to happen.

Lee + Bron + Bulls vs Wade + Bosh + Heat would be a cool rivalry for years. that I think we’d dominate for years.

Lee + James + Deng...

…is, in my mind, actually a pretty close second to getting Bosh + James and having to trade away Deng.

They're both

Better than Rudy Gay and better than Luol Deng (well Boozer is at least, Lee is a stat padder, Boozer has real post game, which is a premium).

I think Boozer’s worth a $14-15M mark, Lee $12M/yr similar to Deng and I think we’re he’s at.

Its all speculation. When it comes down to it, we’ll all see what actually matters to these guys. If Lebron actually cares about winning a championship, he’ll go to Chicago or stay in Cleveland. All these guys have the extra $30 mill dangling in front of their faces to stay, and if they leave their teams they leave the money on the table, not something their willing to do. An interesting Q&A with Chad Ford:

Chad, Bulls gonna be the FA losers? Knicks get Amare. Heat get Bosh. LBJ to Cavs. Bulls get ?
Friday July 2, 2010 2:28 Frank

2:30 Chad Ford, ESPN Insider: If it plays out that way … yes and no. Bulls are the only team that didn’t gut their roster to get LeBron. They still have a lot of talent and can use their space to facilitate trades to shore up their core. It’s much less of a disaster for the Bulls if they strike out. Ditto for the Nets. But, for the Cavs, Knicks or Heat, it would be Armageddon.

I know that if he wants to win perhaps he can go elsewhere, but come on that’s a TON of money for a guy who’s not really worth it. If he leaves that says a ton about his character if you ask me.

And who’s to say the Hawks are done getting better.

New coach plus Josh Smith, Al Horford, Crawford, and possibly CHildress and hey Crawford expires next yr coming off his best year ever, and Josh Smith’s upside still hasn’t fully been reached….

So why JJ would leave for Chicago, Nets, Knicks or Heat is beyond me….esp with $119M on the table.

Very interesting

This Chad Ford comment references one of our earlier discussions about Wade:

If Lebron was thinking about staying in Cleveland, should’t he be busy recruiting for sign and trades???
Friday July 2, 2010 2:44 Lakers3peat

2:46 Chad Ford, ESPN Insider: I do think that’s an unusual aspect of this whole thing. If LeBron really wanted to go back to Cleveland … he should’ve committed quickly and then turned all of his attention into trying to help the Cavs work out a sign-and-trade for more talent. That’s always been why I’ve been skeptical about him returning to Cleveland. He’s not helping the Cavs right now. And, by the way, I think the Heat are a little shocked that Wade isn’t doing more to help Miami. He’s out there flirting with the Bulls, Knicks and Nets … not sure that helps their cause in getting other free agents on board. Now maybe Wade is just doing reconnaissance work for Miami … but I’ve found that odd on both accounts.
Friday July 2, 2010 2:46 Chad Ford, ESPN Insider

by RM on Jul 2, 2010 1:50 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

what's LeBron supposed to do to work out sign-and-trades?

it’s not like he can’t talk to these players anyways and tell them “if we figure out a S&T, come to Cleveland with me.” it’s not like he’d trick Bosh into going to Cleveland and then not return there himself. the Wade thing is a little weird, but the same thing applies to him. the other players (like Bosh) probably know what he’s thinking. i think he just wants to join in on the fun and see what it’s all about…and maybe do some spying.

by M 80 on Jul 2, 2010 2:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

The point is that if he committed to the Cavs, they could be working to improve the team around him instead of waiting for him to decide.

by RM on Jul 2, 2010 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

i think he'd only go back if they do pull off a S&T

so committing now would be pretty risky, given that they might not be able to pull off a S&T with or without Bron. i’m saying LeBron himself could easily tell these other players “you’ve got my word, if you accept a S&T to the Cavs i’m staying.” and Cleveland should obviously be working S&T’s right now. does LeBron being signed right now help their chances of completing a S&T?
now as far as other moves Cleveland would make in the case LeBron is leaving, yeah, he’s holding them hostage. but we won’t know if he was doing that until he decides. i’ve gotta think he’s talked with them about how making a S&T would bring him back.
so it’s still unclear if it means anything, and i guess that’s why it’s not really a smoking gun to me.

by M 80 on Jul 2, 2010 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's one.
LeBron’s 2nd question: “That guy Sterling, does he still own the team? He does? Thanks for coming, fellas. Safe trip back.”

I wouldn't be too shocked if Wade went to the Knicks

So... you were spending your free time on here?

ouch!

If Amare signs with the Knicks, Wade leaving is a real possiblity.

Pretty amazing really how this is all working out. I don’t think it would be the worst thing in the world if we ended up with Wade and Boozer. I loved Wade coming out of Marquette…maybe I can learn to love him again.

How?

How does amare signing with the knicks = wade leaving? He can still get bosh/boozer/lee as well as some other FA’s. I think it’s been basically assured that Wade stays in Miami

by ChiTownSportsMaster on Jul 2, 2010 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

I don’t see a direct relationship between Stoudemire signing with the Knicks and D-Wade leaving, but I’m definitely less certain about him staying in Miami either way.

If it's true that Amare didn't get along with D'Antoni

I wonder if Amare is just messing with the Knicks to screw them over before signing with the Bulls, Heat, or Nets.
