Top Available Free Agents

The Bulls have needs remaining at backup PG, backup SG, and backup C.  Here are my top 4 free agents available in those slots:

PG

1. Jason Williams

2. Rafer Alston

3. Shannon Brown

4. C.J. Watson

* After thinking about it I really like Jason Williams on this Bulls squad.  He can shoot the 3, he can score, he can play uptempo and pass the ball.

SG

1. Roger Mason

2. Flip Murray

3. Keith Bogans

4. Josh Howard

* I think the Bulls need a scoring backup SG and Mason is probably the best shooter whereas Flip may be the best scorer left, he did well for the Bulls at the end of last season.

C

1. Brad Miller

2. Kurt Thomas

3. Brian Skinner

4. Shaq

*Gotta resign Brad

The Bulls really only need one more piece

and that’s a combo guard. We have a backup SG in Korver and backup C in Asik. Just need someone who can handle the ball and play alongside Rose if need be. The three players who I think might fit that role are Keyon Dooling, CJ Watson, and Flip Murray. The Bulls could also just sign Acie Law and Morris Almond. Damn the value of that cap space ran out quick.

by YaoPau on Jul 16, 2010 5:50 PM CDT reply actions

What about Bouldin?

ANy chance he can stick?

shooting the 3 at a near 40% clip would no t be a surprise in spot duty

I also like CJ Watson and Earl Watson. Earl is a damn fine pg, knows how to run an offense.

primarily dribbles with his right hand

not very quick with the ball, and i wasnt impressed with his defense….i havent really been impressed by anyone in summer league…JJ simply looks like our best player, and its obvious he still isnt there yet….

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

Too crazy, probably. I want him, too, but he's looney toons. Sad.

I'm for Josh Howard now

I think he’d be about perfect.

Get Josh Howard ($4M/ over 2 yrs), Sign Ike Diogu (min since he’s always hurt) as our 3rd PF (with big upside at 25, but always hurt), then I guess try to bring in Kurt Thomas for whatever’s left for a 2 yr maybe what $6M deal.

Use our remaining cap holds on John Lucas and either Byars or Richard (size matters even if Richard is awful).

He looked 12th man good with maybe upside, so I guess I’d take him anyday over Richard.

Face it

Although Brewer is a nice addition, he’s best suited coming off the bench as a complementary defensive presence. This basically means that our SG hole is only half full, and although it’s imperative that we sign other free agents to solidify the team, a trade of some sort is necesarry for this team to actually contend.

by GriggsBriggs on Jul 16, 2010 6:44 PM CDT reply actions

Disagree

This team is already the 2nd best in the league. A defensive SG who also shoots 50% from the floor? Thats not half a player, thats a whole one.

by californiachicagoan on Jul 16, 2010 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

While I love the enthusiasm

Saying this is the second best team in the league is a bit of a stretch. I mean the Lakers and the Heat are clearly better and there are other teams I could see doing better than us.

Gar is going to fuck the shit out of your mother

by Bullbo Baggins on Jul 16, 2010 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Well

Brewer shoots a high pct. from the floor because of the fact that he takes high percantage shots, which I certainly like (unlike Pargo), and rarely forces shots. However, the main concern is that he lacks ideal accuracy from distance (32%), and has limited abilities in creating his own shot.

by GriggsBriggs on Jul 17, 2010 6:20 PM CDT up reply actions

All players have strengths and weaknesses

He shoots 50%. I dont care if he can create his own shot. Rose up top/Boozer down low should be handling the ball. We should not have a SG who is hogging the ball(i.e. “creating his own shot”).

Outside range would be nice, but so is a smart player who doesnt take bad shots and plays good defense. Give me 4 guys who take good shots and play good defense, and 1 guy who creates.

Actually

So far in summer league play, John Lucas appears to really be turning some heads, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him play behind Rose. What concerns me is wether or not he’ll be able to take on the challenge of playing a good 10 minutes while Rose is resting, which you can’t compare to garbage time.

Back-up SG is covered.

There are more than enough minutes to go around between Deng, Korver, and Brewer at the 2/3. I think an inexpensive zone-buster like Eddie House is a better investment.

I think Earl Watson is your best bet at back-up PG. Will Bynum is also a good fit because the Bulls do have bigs who won’t clog the lane, and Bynum’s a penetrator.

Thibs’ system seems to demand a lot of activity from its big men defensively, so I’m not sure if Shaq and Brad are good gets. Could probably get away with 2 or 3 athletic guys to sop up fouls. Sean Williams? Josh Boone?

im not against flip

he is a solid defender, he isnt a ball hog, he can handle the rock and play the point, hes a no nonsense player. hes just not very quick…so while on offense he would be awesome as a combo guard, on defense he could only strictly guard sgs, quick pgs are gonna toast him worse than they did kirk….

1. Mason
2. Dooling
3. House
4. Williams
5. Kurt (unfortuantely not Brad)

hes gonna end up with the mavs

but i wish the bulls had tried to go after jeremy lin….i heard about him many months ago first on espn…so i cant say im a true fan, but everytime i see highlights of him i want for him to succeed . Hes a guard from harvard, so hes gotta be smart for a pro athlete, but hes a great floor general. Hes one of those guys i feel i can relate to in terms of play….he went undrafted…but im sure that dallas is gonna pick him up cuz hes been tearing it up in summer league for them…how good has he been? Well, he played john wall, and had the more spectacular stats and highlights….

Get the remaining guys from the Summer League team.

Lucas, Bouldin and a big man as well.
Use the remaining money to extend Noah. We must not loose him. Next year we will need to extend Rose as well and he will be a max player for sure.
We need a 8-9 man rotation with remaining pieces being only respectable.

Its always smart to poach the role players from the top teams, Spurs, Lakers, Utah, Boston.

I’d be real excited for Mason. I’m surprised he hasn’t been signed yet.

Eddie House, Roger Mason Jr., and Kurt Thomas

If we can’t work out a trade for Rudy or Henry. I think we should go this route.

House and Mason Jr. both provide the team with shooters off the bench. Even though House is listed as a PG, he’s really a 6’ SG, but that’s where Mason Jr. comes in. At 6’5, he can play the PG spot on offense and defend SG’s on defense.
Thomas gives us a ornery vet in the Brad Miller mold, to come in if Asik isn’t producing. He still plays pretty good D, for his age and can give u some quality time in the post when needed.

by Ceasaleo on Jul 18, 2010 11:18 AM CDT reply actions

Thomas

He’d be phenomenal as a backup to Noah because while he doesn’t score a whole lot, he plays tough defense, rebounds, and isn’t afraid to bang with the big bodies down-low that are in the Eastern Conference (Horford, Howard, Hibbert). Since Brad already resigned, Thomas would be great to allow Asik to get his feet wet before throwing him into the fire right away.

by bearsfann on Jul 18, 2010 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I think..

Eddie House would be a good fit. He can shoot and play PG. So House, Mason and K.Thomas.

Rose/House/Law?

Brewer/Mason/Korver

Deng/Korver/JJ

Boozer/Gibson/Thomas

Noah/Thomas/Asik

by bullz on Jul 18, 2010 12:56 PM CDT reply actions   2 recs

I was thinking ...

PG DRose / House / Lucas
SG Brewer / Mason / Bouldin
SF Deng / Korver / JJ
PF Boozer / Gibson / Samuels
C Noah / Asik / Thomas

That’s all 15 roster spots filled. Lucas, Bouldin, and Samuels on the inactive list, on minimum deals. I think Thibs is going to want to keep as many guys as possible, to keep practices fresh and get the young guys acclimated to his style and working the system. Bouldin and Samuels could be solid contributors if developed right. Plus, it gives us more ammo for trades for a SG in the future.

I really wouldn’t mind signing TMac instead of Mason. He has to understand that he’s not THE star anymore. If he comes here he has to be comfortable with coming off the bench, and playing his ass off every minute, no loafing. I saw flashes last year with the Knicks, he just didn’t have the legs to play over 25 mins a game. Maybe, another summer of training and this would make it about 1 1/2 years since the surgery, he gets his legs back. Not as explosive as before of course, but more than serviceable, he can hit a j and create off the dribble for himself and teammates. He could mess around and be the 6th Man of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year if he’s straight. That’s a BIG if tho.

Here's a name I don't think I've seen once on this board since the start of free agency: Rasual Butler.

He’s big (6’7"), can shoot the 3 (made exactly as many as Ray Allen last year with only 30 more attempts), and would come cheap. He’s a guy capable of coming off the bench as a 2 or 3 for 20-25 minutes, sitting in the corners to space the floor, and draining open looks. Of the guys that are left, how many can you say that about?

I’d give him 1 year, $2.5M.

by pooriejay on Jul 19, 2010 11:15 AM CDT reply actions   1 recs

How old is he?

Could the Bulls offer him the vet’s minimum? Either way, I think he’s another one of the candidates to flock to the Heat, especially cuz he did used to be on the team

by ChiTownSportsMaster on Jul 19, 2010 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Not much other than squaring up shooting guards better.

I don’t know if I want to see Korver guarding Wade or Kobe or chasing around Ray Allen for 25 minutes. It’d just be nice to have two shooters on this team.

by pooriejay on Jul 19, 2010 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

He's 31.

Maybe not the minimum, but cheap nonetheless.

by pooriejay on Jul 19, 2010 1:16 PM CDT reply actions

good list- here's what I'm thinking

I’m thinking that Thomas is a must for PF/C now that Brad is in Hou, he actually played somewhat well when Bogut went down. If Asik is slow to catch on it looks like he could soak up some minutes and not be a liability.

For PG C J Watson is the best choice eventhough he is still unproven and restricted, Bynum is also solid and restricted and it is almost painful to say but for the unrestricted players the only one I would trust running the team if Rose got hurt would be J Williams. One thing we should do is make a call to Dallas and see if Barea can be had because their backcourt seems crowded and he would be an ideal backup PG because he does seem to be a smart player with some skill.

For SG Flip or Mason Jr are prob the best choices because they don’t seem to need a lot of min to be affective and Brewer will play a lot because of his D and Korver will get some min here as well.

by unstopaBULL on Jul 19, 2010 3:09 PM CDT reply actions

I mentioned this in another thread...

How come no one is mentioning Josh Boone as the Bulls’ potential fourth big man…he has proven to be solid back-up big man in NJ.

In the backcourt, there are a couple of guys no one is mentioning who could be had for the minimum…Mardy Collins or Javaris Crittenton.

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on Jul 19, 2010 5:41 PM CDT reply actions

I liked Boone

bc he always seemed to play really well against us. But he’s played really really poorly in the few other games I’ve seen him play. But then again as our 3rd PF, sure….why not.
