Bulls Nuggets Summer League Thread

[From the FanPosts. How dare the Kyle Korver press conference overshadow this.

Here's an update from David Thorpe (via commenter RM's destroyed fanshot): "@coachthorpe James Johnson looks far more conditioned and focused than he did last year." So that's good.  Lots more on the rest of the roster here from Sham, and here from CSN's Aggrey Sam.  -ed.]

I didn't see one so I'm making one. So far Byars looks good.  And WTF, JR Smith is in the summer league?

his per36 numbers are nice, for a rookie:

15 pts
5.6 ast
1.3 stl
3.4 reb
51% fg
41% 3fg

It looks a lot worse than it is me thinks.

We’re severely overmatched talent wise this game.

"I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye.
I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind.

by windycitywarrior on Jul 13, 2010 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions

They also (to the best of my knowledge) have won all of the games they've played (Including this one)

So while I agree that our squad is rusty, my point still stands.

"I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye.
I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I shoot with my mind.

by windycitywarrior on Jul 13, 2010 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Isn't being severely overmatched worse though?

I mean a lack of talent can’t be fixed. You say it’s not as bad as it looks, but if it looks bad because we aren’t as talented, I would consider that a pretty big problem. It’s one thing if they are rusty or not used to playing with each other.

I realize none of these guys outside of Johnson are really expected to contribute so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 14, 2010 8:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, that does sound a bit contradicting.

I guess what I’m trying to say is they looked completely terrible in contrast to the good Nuggets squad that was out there. They’re still awful, but they won’t be playing teams like that every game. They’ll have better games (I hope?)

I do agree with you that JJ is is the only guy that’s expected to contribute, and I doubt we’ll be talking a lot about Summer League when it’s over.

"I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father. I aim with my eye.

I don't think anybody on this team will be more than a 10th man for us...

I expect Korver, Gibson, Asik (or Brad Miller), and a veteran PG to play the meaningful bench minutes. Johnson was the only guy on the roster who has a shot at regular minutes, and even he has a numbers crunch with Deng and Korver ahead of him at SF and Boozer and Gibson ahead of him at PF.

by SouthernCub on Jul 13, 2010 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

amazing

@chadfordinsider Team customarily give player 120% of salary scale. Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley offered less. Thus … no Henry in summer league

I don’t know who looks worse, the player or the owner.

by Basketball Smurf on Jul 13, 2010 4:32 PM CDT reply actions

Owner will get 95% of the blame

Heisley makes it look as though he is admitting he made the wrong decision picking Henry OR demonstrating extreme cheapness… or a combination of both.

Henry should play in the summer league anyways, but that will be overshadowed by the crooked look Memphis fans give Heisley. It is as though he thought no one would find out he lowballed his brand new player

I met one of Hinrich's Professor's at Kansas, but he never met Hinrich.

by Another Afflicted Chicago Fan on Jul 13, 2010 4:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Why does that equate?

He lowballed Henry probably because he took on so much money with Rudy Gay. He is trying to limit spending. Mayo is a great talent on a rookie contract—no reason to move him.

Bouldin looked solid for a 3rd PG type of guy...

other than that, I agree. Lucas and McClinton just looked to shoot and played no defense.

by SouthernCub on Jul 13, 2010 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

The Nuggets D had a factor in that.

Lanes were constantly being closed, really tight 1-1 defense. Nuggets knew what they were doing. Bulls looked like lost.

He just needs to “get it”. Much like Earl Clark, but Clark also needs to fill out. Johnson, as we can say, had plenty of papa johns last year.

Those skills don’t make any freaking sense right now, but having a three point shot is foolproof. Nothing keeps a defense honest better than a consistent shooter.

My hope is that Thibs works the ever-loving piss outta this guy and actually teaches him. Del Negro, of course, only did the former—if that.

I met one of Hinrich's Professor's at Kansas, but he never met Hinrich.

Should we or should'nt really trade Deng (to shed contract to go after another FA next summer)

with the small forwards that are left on the market with Deng’s productivity (18 and 9, and with a rejuvenated roster and a matured Rose he could potentially post more than that)? Is it worth getting rid of him for an old Carter and lower tier SF? The Bulls have been making moves for the future instead of for “now” for years, it didn’t work. Now its time to start building a team that can contend ASAP.

Deng is an excellent defender, a great rebounder and a pretty good offensive contributer.

Why trade him, what will we get back in return that will be of equal value?

I saw T2 at Walgreens in Deerfield he’s tall. if you’re wondering what his grocery list included: magnums, french vanilla ice cream and a 20 oz sprite

by Super-Structure on Jul 13, 2010 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

No, who thinks we should?

I think the only reason we would have traded him was if LeBron was available. I could see moving him if you really like Iggy I guess, but really the SF’s in the league better than Deng aren’t available. You keep him around unless a superstar tells you he wants to play in Chicago and the only way he can, is if you move Deng’s contract.

Derrick Byars has to get John Lucas off the floor

Byars can’t do anything with Lucas trying to run things. With Bouldin looking to facilitate Byars, Almond, and Samuels can actually get a good pass.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

Everyone's complaining about JR Smith playing in the summer league

But isn’t it equally/more odd that OJ Mayo is playing the summer league for the T-Wolves? Just sayin

by ChiTownSportsMaster on Jul 13, 2010 5:06 PM CDT reply actions

Yep

And I forgot that J.R. Smith is only 24. He seems like he should be older, since he’s a vet now. I wish we could get him, but I know he’s not available.

sorry lol. He’s on the Grizzlies. My mistake

by ChiTownSportsMaster on Jul 13, 2010 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

OJ is playing

in summer league to work on his PG skills, Memphis wants badly for OJ to develope into a PG, they aren’t big fans of Conley

That makes sense, I guess. Any chance we can get Conley as a backup? Yeah…I know i’m grasping at straws here

by marionette on Jul 14, 2010 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Why not?

OJ is a polished scorer in the NBA. He averaged 17.5 ppg and played 38 min. per game as a starter…JR just kinda chucks up shots and jumps really well. He’s much more in need of development and evaluation than Mayo

by ChiTownSportsMaster on Jul 14, 2010 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

JR Smith is who he is

he’s not gonna change, he doesn’t really need development, because he’s already found his niche.

by Stacey_Is_King on Jul 14, 2010 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

JJ :(
@coachthorpe The Bulls have a very poor entry here this week, and James Johnson can not change that. But he’s allowed the game drain his energy.

by RM on Jul 13, 2010 5:09 PM CDT reply actions

JJ was responsible for a lot of those Nuggets FTs.

Disappointed in Johnson and Byars...

Bouldin looked like a guy who could handle the ball and run an offense as a 3rd PG, but I don’t think he has the athleticism to do much more than that. Almond could definitely score against weaker comp, but I guess the defense question remains.

But basically nobody looked like a rotation player in this game. That’s not surprising (none of these guys were expected to be much more than end-of-the-roster guys with the exception of Johnson.

Johnson did look in better shape, but he still was too lazy with the ball and didn’t seem to play with any focus. And Byars just didn’t show enough to suggest he’s anything more than an end-of-the-roster guy, either.

Hopefully we’ll see better things tomorrow, but I don’t expect much from our summer league team.

How many of yall think Asik will contribute rite away or will it take a year or two to get used to the NBA game

I hope he does from the video Ive seen , seems like he can defend and block pretty good .

by joaroselabrosh on Jul 13, 2010 6:07 PM CDT reply actions

I wouldn't expect a ton from Asik right away...

but then again not much will be expected. With Boozer, Noah, and Gibson, that’s most of the frontcourt minutes anyway. If he can give 8-12 mpg off the bench, that’d probably be all we’d ask this year (barring an injury to Noah or Boozer of course).

by SouthernCub on Jul 13, 2010 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

the problem is there’s not really another center in our current frontcourt rotation, as taj and boozer shouldn’t be in that position.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

by Jaina on Jul 13, 2010 6:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Boozer can play a few minutes there as needed

And there’s always the possibility we bring Miller back for a minor role.

by SouthernCub on Jul 13, 2010 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

i don't want to see booz get minutes at the 5

hope asik will be good enough, otherwise i don’t mind seeing miller get some minutes.

but since we have a big time PF and taj we shouldn’t need to do the noah/miller combo we saw last year, thus limiting miller’s minutes more than before.

"They should. They better. I'm Vinny Del Negro!"

by Jaina on Jul 13, 2010 7:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

But we should probably sign Miller before we count on him playing!

Miller seemed to have such a good time here last year that he might just resign on the cheep… But the evil golden ring in Miami is calling out to him, so he might prefer to sign there.

I do think we need One more big To Help with Asik development and not to put Pressure on Boozer or Taj who are Like 6'8 and would be Dominated

Id rather NOT see Boozer play center and if Noah planters fasciitis come’s back it would not be good.
If we add One more Big PF/C 6’10 to 7’0 ft and a Half way Decent Point guard to back up Rose , we are really deep and ready to go at it.
Regardless of getting Redick ,Brewer or Barnes(who is more suited For the 3 or 4 than SG He played both for the suns and magic)I think the Bull’s need to add those piece’s

Why the either-or?

I like Livingston and Howard, and both can likely be had on decent deals, unless Boston offers Howard a large deal out of desperation. It’s nice that the Bulls want to develop JJ, but when Howard’s healthy he’s as good of a player as Luol. It would be nice to not lose any production at the 3 when Luol leaves the game. Howard would also be a really nice piece for games against Miami or another team with a really good two guard.

by dakoose on Jul 13, 2010 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Because they should get a young player or two if they're any decent.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Swirksi interviewed him the other day

http://blogs.bulls.com/2010/07/bulls-enjoy-summer-league-appetizer-against-cavs/

Bouldin sounds like he’s coming into the situation as if the Bulls already want him on the roster. He’s pleased he wasn’t drafted. Had already talked to Bulls about how they wanted him but had no picks to use to select him. He’s looking to pass in Summer League and not chuck shots like guys competing for a roster spot.
