Around SBN: Despite Relocation Drama, Coyotes Overcome Adversity

Timberwolves have agreed to send power forward Al Jefferson to the Utah Jazz for two future first-round draft picks and the salary-cap trade exception.

Al Jefferson headed from Wolves to Jazz

Jefferson at that price is rather sobering to our hopes of finding a difference maker for a cheap trade with our cap space.

He's got an actual point guard

He’s not done by any means.

I wonder how short of time until Sloan chews him out.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

I think

Al Jeff is a very solid player and will replace the low post scoring of Carlos Boozer.

Trade for Beasley

trade away Jefferson, makes perfect sense to me.

Did anyone else see that the Spurs signed Tiago Splitter for less than the T-wolves paid for Darko or Pekovic?

So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

Spurs are the best in the business.

Though...

one thing to remember is that the Spurs had Splitter’s rights so he couldn’t go anywhere else in the NBA but SA. Loses just a bit of leverage that way. Not that that exempts Kahn from making stupid moves.

He could have gone back to Europe

Splitter was a 1st round pick, so

he has to sign the contract thats was slotted for his spot in the draft.

by QUINTEN DALEY on Jul 13, 2010 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Per Hollinger, he was no longer beholden to the rookie scale
Entering the offseason, most thought the Spurs would need their entire midlevel exception to lure Splitter, a 2007 first-round draft pick who no longer is bound by the rookie contract scale, from his team in Spain.

Link

Also, from the Larry Coon FAQ (Q 43)

After three years they have the option of either using the salary scale or signing him like he was a free agent— using their cap room, the Mid-Level exception, the Bi-Annual exception or the Disabled Player exception, and with standard raises. They can only do the latter if the player did not play intercollegiately in the interim, and such a contract must be for at least three seasons.

So Minnesota's offseason is basically downgrading from Al Jeff to crazy Michael Beasley?

Plus another hard-to-guess if he’s going to be good drafting of Wes Johnson, instead of who SHOULD have been AlJeff’s replacement: DeMarcus Cousins.

I don’t think Cousins is nearly as crazy as Beasley, and Beasley seems to have little upside or work ethic.

(Of course, I have a Kentucky bias)

Actually, I just read that the trade exception is useless because Minny was so far under the cap anyway

http://www.twolvesblog.com/201007133066/minnesota-timberwolves/articles/big-alco-traded-to-utah-for-cap-space-a-draft-picks.html

Hollinger said:

If I’m not mistaken Minnesota will be more than $13M under cap anyway, so TPE would be a non-factor. For those who are asking, no, you can’t use the TPE and the cap space. It’s one or the other – if you use cap space you renounce exceptions.

They did clear some money, but they got rid of their first or second best player for basically clearly $8M in salary and garbage

from that minny blog:

So if all this stuff goes down, in total we swapped out Big Al and 2 future second round picks for Michael Beasley, Luke Ridnour, two future heavily protected first round picks, and about $8 million dollars in cap space. I guess you be the judge regarding the merits of these moves. I like the Beasley trade, but I would have liked to seen us get at least one player for Jefferson though. I hope our Front Office doesn’t try to spin this as one big trade (to cover up for dumping Al), because that would be disingenuous and weak.

this trade doesn't make sense without drafting Cousins. Jefferson and Love

had problems playing together, but Love isn’t a low post scorer. Now all of a sudden, the Twolves are a total jump shooting team. Its surprising that a 15 win team with cap space can get worse. Good job Kahn.

Cousins would have been a pretty ideal fit.

I had Minnesota taking Cousins

based off an Al Jeff trade in my mock draft, but Kahn doesn’t know what the hell he is doing, drafting Rubio & Flynn, signing Sessions last year, and now signing Ridinour this year, he is making Kevin McHale look like Mitch Kupcheck

Best thing about this for the Bulls

Jazz are now at the tax line, so it virtually eliminates the chance that they bring back Ronnie Brewer or any other SG we may be after.
