After signing Ramon Sessions to a four-year, $16 million contract a year ago, Minnesota Timberwolves general manager David Kahn is trying to unload the guard to teams able to absorb his salary, league executives told Yahoo! Sports.

"They’re basically looking for a salary dump," said an executive with a team who spoke to Minnesota. "That won’t be easy."

I'd like Sessions

He was awesome in Milwaukee, and that contract is nothing. Maybe we can somehow get Corey Brewer in a package.

by YaoPau on Jul 12, 2010 10:19 AM CDT reply actions

I don't know...

Sessions has been very good when given the opportunity…Corey Brewer on the other hand has been bad and given plenty of opportunities…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on Jul 12, 2010 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Really?

Sessions is an abysmal 3pt shooter. His TS% is very low. He seems fairly inefficient overall. Perhaps you see something that I don’t, but TS near 50%, inability to shoot outside of 15 feet, and his assist rate and turnover rate are not any better than Rose. I’d rather have a guy that can either shoot well from distance, or is an excellent pass first PG. Sessions does not seem to be either. Aside from the 17 games in 2008, he hasn’t been anything to write home about.

(now I will wait patiently while YaoPau proves me wrong, but I tried)

I'm not sure what happened last year

But I remember this stretch from his rookie season:

Date	Opp	MIN	A	PTS
2-Apr	@WAS	24	8	8
4-Apr	IND	31	7	11
6-Apr	@IND	42	10	8
8-Apr	BOS	37	7	13
9-Apr	@TOR	36	10	6
11-Apr	@BOS	43	14	8
12-Apr	NJ	43	13	12
14-Apr	CHI	44	24	20
16-Apr	@MIN	53	14	25

And I remember him putting up 44 and 12 against Detroit in year two, with a 17.6 PER for the season. He’s 6’3" in shoes, DX calls him a decent defender, he’s just 24. At worst he plays 15mpg of solid ball and he’s a possible trade chip. We have no other ball handlers besides Rose, and we’re dangling half our remaining cap space on JJ Redick. I see no downside to this.

I agree

A seemingly solid backup PG he’d be….perhaps better than Acie Law (though I do find it puzzling that Acie Law looked good when he actually got minutes for us, then never played again….perhaps we were trying to keep his value low to resign him…..

But Sessions is a solid backup.

I’d like Ridnour if we could get him for less than the $4M/yr on Sessions, just because I think Ridnour is a wee bit more proven and well more importantly didn’t have a bad year like Sessions oddly did last year in Minny…..

I was excited about Sessions last summer though, and wouldn’t mind him.

Fair enough

He may have just had an off year. That TS% bothers me a bit. It very well could have been minnesota’s system. It seemed like he would just have long stretches where he was not good. That’s a great stretch in his rookie season though. I suppose I am missing the point that he is still 24 and he played for a shitty team last year.

I’d love to take a swing on Ellington or Brewer with the trade. Both guys are still young and athletic (Brewer much more athletic). Ellington was a pretty solid shooter at UNC and did pretty well his rookie year. If he could tighten up the D a bit…maybe a good risk. I think Brewer could become a solid defender under Thibs, but many probably could.

by DRose01 on Jul 12, 2010 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe Minnesota is just where you go to suck ass.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

I don't know, I always wonder about guys in this kind of position

I don’t know Sessions is a locker room problem, or low IQ guy, or whatever similar reasons a team might want to trade a guy. But you look at Sessions production and it seems crazy that he hasn’t gotten more of a chance. It’s not like he’s played behind guys who were much better, and it’s not like he’s been on a bad contract.

by wjb1492 on Jul 12, 2010 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Isn't that exactly the kind of guys the Bulls should target?

If there aren’t questions about a player, he isn’t coming at a bargain. I’d rather those questions be about something other than their production.

by YaoPau on Jul 12, 2010 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Sessions would be kind of a waste on the Bulls, unless Derrick got hurt. He's starting caliber (seriously)

when given minutes. To spend $4 million on a backup PG behind Derrick when Acie Law is available for likely a quarter of that price and much better suited to the role of backup, just doesn’t make sense to me.

by fundamentallysound on Jul 12, 2010 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

that implies he's only play 8 minutes a game

wouldn’t Sessions get some time at the 2 as well? especially considering we have zero of them?

Well...

I though he may be a back-up PG option, but his salary makes me second guess that thought…

… Especially w/ Ridnour and Livingston being considered as replacements along the fact he’s stuck behind Flynn, who I wasn’t really impressed with.

I will say I haven’t seen Sessions play much in Minny, but I did like him when he was with the Bucks.

by kingj41 on Jul 12, 2010 10:21 AM CDT reply actions

if Redick gets matched, I like him alright.

but only on February 29th.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

by NBA Observer on Jul 12, 2010 10:23 AM CDT reply actions

Like Sessions

he could play some 2 alongside Rose, right?

I’m starting to worry about underselling the backup PG need. I think the actual role of a dedicated backup point could be had for very cheap, but it’d be nice if we also had a 2 that could swing over for some point. Otherwise we’re very vulnerable if Rose is hurt, but that’s the case regardless, right?

Yeah, we could use someone to at least bring the ball up and defend well

But they should at least be able to pass or shoot well. Perhaps someone on the summer league roster? Jerel McNeal? McClinton? I remember McNeal being a solid creator in college at Marquette. Not sure how well that has translated overseas or how it would work here.

by DRose01 on Jul 12, 2010 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Ugh

Nevermind. Just looked up his college stats. A negative pure point rating in college doesn’t bode well for him. Nor does the pretty poor 3pt %.

i liked what i saw out of him. i dont want to lose him for nothing and have him succeed like shannon brown did with kobe.

by Yibs on Jul 12, 2010 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Shannon Brown is the same guy he always was. He's just on TV more now and asked to do less in LA.

Basically all he has to do is dunk on breakaways and get in someone’s jersey on defense. And he does it fairly well. Doesn’t make him good, though.

yeah i get that

but when he was here… he not only wasn’t on tv, but barely in any games. we just had him sitting on the bench. acie gave some good minutes when rose was hurt and then was never seen again, under the brilliance of vinny.

I'm cuckoo for Kukoc!!!

I like that too

but in addition to getting another rotation player to handle the ball.

I'd be very happy if we brought West, Law and B-Miller in

it solves our three most pressing needs. Plus, we could probably still squeeze in Sessions if we wanted, so long as we just sent away JJ

I could live with that, but we've gotten no indications that Delonte is being looked at by the Bulls

and they made no effort to grab Barbosa who would have been a solid fit and has a better track record of above average play than Redick who really only became good in the last year.

I know it was a small 4 game thing

But Howard looked rejuvinated before that awful injury agianst us last year in his new uniform. If he is close or back to his self, he’s a solid pickup as a versatile 2/3 super Salmons that would likely be on the cheap.

can he play any minutes at SG? That's part of why I like Delonte. He can defend either position and work the PG and SG spots competently on offense. I think Lowry's

a very good PG defender but he seems a little small for most SGs. That and he seems to be more of a penetrator than a shooter don’t make him the best fir for SG minutes on this team.

Yes

I like him, too, but he is purely a backup PG. He can’t play the 2 as he is a spotty shooter and pretty small (maybe he’s 6 feet tall). If we could get him for cheap, I say do it.

by Stay Chisel on Jul 12, 2010 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Barbosa

Has been hurt it seems the last 2 yrs (he played a lot more 2 yrs ago, but I thought played hurt a bit too.

Plus he’s been downright bad in the playoffs each year, he makes $7-7.6M the next 2 seasons, isn’t a good enough ball handler to play decent PG, cannot defend given his size and has falled further away from defense the last 3-4 yrs, which is concerning, and cannot get many assists on a Phx team that’s all about shot makers.

I think he’s a big step down from Kirk.

Maybe it's just me

but I liked Acie Law last year. Maybe to Bulls are just going to stick with him. Not exaclty sure why he lost playing time but if he isn’t cut, I think the Bulls are going to stick with him as the back up PG.

by Dils on Jul 12, 2010 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

He'd be fine as the backup PG. He's basically Derrick Lite. I want the Bulls to get someone else at the SG slot

that can handle the ball, defend, and make 3s at an okay rate. Delonte’s the guy I like for that spot, but he’s nuts so he probably won’t get picked up.

Redick’s not really athletic, he isn’t much of a ball handler / creator, and his defense is okay, but not great (because of his limited athleticism).

I don’t really know who else is out there that’s starting caliber that fits the criteria I’d like next to Derrick in the starting lineup.

Would the Cavs be willing to trade us Mo Williams now that LeBron is gone?

That would be a dream come true. He would be the perfect fit next to Rose.
