Reposting my POP QUIZ: Tomorrow: sources from both the Heat and the Clippers will be:

a. Feeling cautiously optimistic
b. Expecting a second meeting
c. Considering their respective teams the frontrunners
d. All of the above

"Smith stripped. Smith stopped! Smith stopped again by Pippen!"

I'm guessing the Clippers won't even make it

Their plane will crash on the way to the meeting, in yet another example of the Clippers franchise being doomed.

Riley will start telling people he already signed Lebron because he refuses to be denied

He may not be married, but he's got plenty of Thibo-hoes.

My prediction

Clippers will set the bar so low that whoever presents immediately after them is a virtual lock to get Lebron.

Yeah. I said pretty much the same.

One is a year younger, though. Whoopteedo.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

Just for some perspective. I thought it was interesting.

From Deadspin:

What do I know that all the other pundits don’t?

1.) I know Gloria James, the Unholy Mother. I know her dire backstory. I know that her son is more mature than she is and how much support and protection her son — and the Cavaliers — provide for her. This is a prior existing condition, a de facto factor that can’t be exploited by any other team in the course of their pitches to LeBron — he wouldn’t stand for that subject to be addressed, nor would he raise it. And he knows that no other media market in the country would enable him to maintain a shield of silence around her.

by majoyenrac on Jul 1, 2010 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

Luol was never a bad player. He was just a bit overpaid. Now that his contract is a bit more reasonable hopefully, he will get more love from the fans and the media.

by MrBungle on Jul 1, 2010 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

I like how one overpaid player makes us feel good about that Deng contract.

By us I mean you guys.

It’s not like Turkoglu’s contract last year or Dampier/Miller/Dalembert’s ugly contracts should make us feel better about Deng.

Ok fine, Ben Wallace’s deal does make Deng’s look decent. Decent is the key.

Surround this team with two big stars and we can live with Deng’s contract, but only because we’ll be eating the luxury tax like any other big market team in the upcoming years (Rose, Noah reups, max FAs will have escalating salaries and Deng’s contract climbs as well).

Still, if you think you can get anything back but expirings and maybe a rotation player for Deng, you’re smoking the same shit Heisley is.

by RyPac13 on Jul 1, 2010 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Deng's contract isn't great and it's not easy to trade, but

you also can’t acquire a player of similar ability on the free agent market for less money than Deng is being paid.

The only problem with Deng is that he is actually basically worth his contract. That’s of no use to a team where winning games is no longer a priority, and majority of the teams that are interested in winning have already paid their own Deng type players and are dealing with luxury tax issues.

I don't even know if we'd need to swign for the Melo fence

Though obv talent wise sure….

I seriously think Dirk’s got at least 3 good years in him seeing as his PER is in the low 20’s and his playoff PER has been at the 28 level the last few years….he can still game. He’s a great scorer and one that is not guardable, especially with a Rose and Deng and defensive/athletic big. I think we’d be on the verge of a SUPERMAVS.

Plus I don’t think anyone outside of Dirk competes with Rose, Deng or Noah these days, just a bunch of overrated, overpaid vets. Kidd ain’t at all as good as he was (even though his stats are decent, he’s got a bunch of scorers around him, the Matrix is getting worse. Bulter’s always to me been overrated, Dampier kept them from a title, Jason Terry is like a Mo Williams, nice to have, but not a game changer….

They’ve got nice players, but have been a 1 Man superstar team for years, and what have 10 straight 50 win seasons in the West, which has been clearly better than the East, and Dirks been a top 1-5 PF for the last 7-8 years….

Even if it’s a pipe dream, it’s my pipe dream.

Lebron is better than Melo, but Melo might be what the doctor ordered with a better post game and perhaps a better team (less ME) game.

I could be fine with it. But what can we trade? I don’t want to give up Noah-Rose And I’d prefer Deng with Melo….

Plus I don’t see a Deng-Taj-next yr first being enough.

outstanding shooter and much better catch and shoot than wade/lebron imo
wade and lebron like creating their own shot more (not that melo cant do that)

At first glance

I was like, no. But yeah I like Melo here, much more, he’s a SCORER and can be impossible in the post to defend, even if he’s a 3….too quick and has the size to attack the post.

I’d be all on for that one. And he’s what 25/26? He’s better than Bosh too.

yeah and everyone keeps talking about how we need a post scorer

well melo can do that too if needed. i love his versatility on offense and any holes on defense i think were erased by his performance in the wcf + he’d be here under thibs

Melo is not better than Bosh.

Denver is obviously going to offer him max money, he has a good team around him, teams aren’t unloading space for next year like they did this off season, I’m sure Melo has some fantasies but if he has a responsible agent he’ll sign on the dotted line. Just like Durant will.

the NJ "frontrunner" thing combined with our Wade meeting today has me thinking

what if James and Bosh do go to NJ? does Wade bolt Miami to come here? because i don’t see a viable roster that could be put together in Miami to compete for a title. but

Rose
Wade
Deng

Noah

ERob was the main reason head bands got banned because he his

wore his headband around his neck like the idiot that he was. This cause Paxson to have an existential crisis. Is it still a headband if it’s not worn around the head? The Notre Dame graduate acted quickly and banned headbands before he was forced to fully contemplate that conundrum.

This sucks!!!!

The Toronto Raptors have talked to six to eight teams willing to do sign-and-trades for Chris Bosh(notes), but front office sources say general manager Bryan Colangelo has ruled out bringing back the expensive contract of Bulls forward Luol Deng(notes).

what else do we have to offer???

by Da Bears2333333 on Jul 1, 2010 4:58 PM CDT reply actions

Nothing that will get us a second max spot

So that means one of two things:

1) If we S&T for Bosh without trading away Deng, we won’t be able to get LBJ too. That can be okay if LBJ already turns us down.

2) We can trade Deng to a third team with cap space.

Otherwise we can just give picks, or Taj + picks, and we’ll settle for Bosh + some non-max FAs.

by RM on Jul 1, 2010 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

how do you say that?

correct me if i’m wrong but, im pretty sure the bulls are a few millon away from being able to sign to maz guys. I think getting rid of taj or/and James johson would be enough

by Da Bears2333333 on Jul 1, 2010 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Cap holds

If you trade Taj and James Johnson, in their place we’ll have minimum contract cap holds because we have two less players. Those cap holds are large enough to eat away much of the savings from trading the two of them away.

Even if we trade them away, we won’t have enough to S&T Bosh for the max and then give LBJ the max. We’ll need to get rid of Deng to do that.

by RM on Jul 1, 2010 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Right

You can imagine two separate trades:

1) Deng + 1st to a team with cap space (say, the Clippers)

2) Taj + 1st to the Raptors for Bosh (so they get a huge trade exemption too)

by RM on Jul 1, 2010 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Hollinger writes about why LeBron, Bosh, and Wade could be bad.
Putting three superstars together via free agency requires a full-on roster evisceration that would make even the 1998-99 Bulls shudder. Miami, for instance, is pursuing the trio by working a sign-and-trade of its last three contracted players to Toronto for Chris Bosh. If successful, the Heat could have a roster of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Bosh and 10 empty slots that could be filled only with second-round draft choices and minimum-wage contracts.

You wouldn't go far in the playoffs with that team, though. Not enough depth.

2010 Offseason Motto: Get Greedy, Bulls. 1 top FA down (Thibs), 1 (or 2) to go.

by fundamentallysound on Jul 1, 2010 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't disagree with that

In fact, I thought Hollinger was pretty damn optimistic – which is why I thought the little bit posted was a bit of a misrepresentation.

He also goes on to say that one of the remaining 10 slots could be a little more than minimum wage and might be enough to attract a decent player who wanted the exposure of playing with the big 3 – a one year contract there, then recoup the sacrificed salary down the road.

by wjb1492 on Jul 1, 2010 6:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought depth was less important in the playoffs.

You can win in the regular season if you have a good team with 10-deep because injuries and fatigue don’t play as big of a factor for you as others. But when you get to the playoffs, your best players are playing 40-45 mins a night and the other starters and backups are playing 25-30, leaving little time for the 8th, 9th and 10th guys.

At least, that was an explanation I read three or four years ago about the Bulls and it made sense.

I could actually envision the reverse. The team wins 50-55 games because they hold the three studs to ~35 mins per game and/or they get tired and/or injured. Their depth is so bad that their second teams get crushed. Then, in the playoffs, as long as all three are healthy, they play 45 mins a game and they are much tougher than their regular season record suggested.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

by tyger1147 on Jul 1, 2010 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Unless the coach doesn't limit the PT during the season and they're exhausted.

I think the playoffs could also present the issue of better competition – if you normally count on your starters winning the game early so the scrubs can get in, but suddenly they can’t build up quite the same cushion and the scrubs are getting slaughtered. There’s also the possibility of foul trouble screwing you up there.

by wjb1492 on Jul 1, 2010 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Foul trouble could definitely sway games

But if you have 3 first team nba players, you can probably survive it.

You simply never put the scrubs in. Your superstars can take it, especially with the way the NBA now give 3 days off even between home games.

So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

by runningman on Jul 1, 2010 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Except when one of your three studs is the one on the bench with the fouls

That reduces you to two studs – which might be plenty on a normally structured team, but has to hurt if you end up with 3 scrubs out there at the same time.

by wjb1492 on Jul 1, 2010 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with this

The team will be more effective in the playoffs than in the regular season. I don’t think they’ll kill themselves for 5 extra wins in the regular season. Just look at Boston last year. Their lack of depth had everyone believing they were done as the lost their way into the playoffs. Everyone got healthy and and talent level of their top 7 shone through (starters plus Rasheed and Big Flopper). Nate Robinson and Tony Allen came in only to fulfill a role and to buy a couple of minutes.

Rajon Rondo averaged 41 minutes per game the last two years in the playoffs while averaging only 33 and 36 in the regular season.

So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

by runningman on Jul 1, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

That's true, but this would be a similar although opposite situation.

That team wins in the regular season because there’s no way that over half the teams in the league can match that kind of talent.

In the playoffs against the top handful of team’s in the league where teams’ top three players are much closer in ability to that big three, the rest of the team could be exploited int he playoffs. Look at either the Lakers against that team. Bryant guarding Wade, Artest guiding, James, and Gasol guarding Bosh and then the Lakers still have Bynum, Odom, and guards at least as good as minimum salary players. Boston is a similar situation, Orlando with Howard clogging the paint would be able to compete. Certainly James, Wade, and Bosh give their team a solid shot to win a championship, but doesn’t necessarily set up a dynasty.

Hedo Turkoglu has changed his tune about the Raptors recently, and could be involved in a sign-and-trade that would send Chris Bosh to the Bulls for Luol Deng.

Turkoglu acknowledged mistakes in his dealings with Toronto, but it’s still hard to imagine him playing there again next year. If the Bulls could get Bosh and lose Deng’s big contract, it could mean they would also have a better shot at getting LeBron.

What's better:

Deng and Taj starting, with $29 mil in cap space … or Turkoglu and Bosh starting, with $12 mil in cap space.

I’d say #1. As much as I’d love to get Bosh, Turkoglu’s four remaining years are a huge weight to carry, and I think we can get more value for $19 million dollars. If we miss out on LeBron and are looking to trade, I’d take the Evan Turner and Elton Brand for nothing trade over this one if it’s still available.

by YaoPau on Jul 1, 2010 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh, having second thoughts

I guess you gotta take the best player in the deal, especially one as good as Bosh. $12 mil in cap space won’t do much though, and we’d need to fill SG and hope to god James Johnson overtakes Turk soon. Rose – Korver – Turkoglu – Bosh – Noah is crap to start.

by YaoPau on Jul 1, 2010 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

doesn't Turk make less than Deng?

I disagree

Lee + Deng> Bosh + Hedo

by MrPants on Jul 1, 2010 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

It depends on if LeBron is part of the equation.

With James on the Bulls I would definitely take Lee+Deng over Bosh + Hedo. The value of Bosh’s shot creation ability and Hedo’s on the ball skills are really minimized if you have James.

If the Bulls can’t get James then Bosh and Hedo becomes better than Lee and Deng because Bosh’s ability to be an elite scorer trumps what Deng and Lee can provide and the team would need another player that can handle the ball and pass with Hinrich gone like Hedo did in Orlando..

Your numbers are off

It’s Deng ($11.4 mil) and Taj ($1.1 mil) with $29 mil in cap space vs. Turkoglu ($9.8 mil) and Bosh($16.5 mil) with $15.2 mil in cap space. That makes a big difference, because if we then move James Johnson, that gives us just enough cap room to grab Lebron.

It makes no sense for him to go on visits to Chicago and NJ unless in the back of his mind he’s deciding to leave himself options. He’s have a better chance of getting FAs to come to Miami if he stood firm, signed his deal, and went all out on recruiting others.

most current free agents are not worth max contracts. He said maybe 5 guys can justify max money and Amare, JJ are not among them. CC interviewed some Cleveland sportswriter who said the signing of Byron Scott improves the Cavs chances of keeping LBJ to 55%. Kerr said huge dollar payouts combined with home town loyalty will make it difficult for him to jump ship while the lesser FA’s will go wherever they can get max money.

I was shocked to hear Gray got a 5 yr 82 million contract. The Bulls should have locked him up when the White Panther was here, especially now since Richard has been waived.

It is true that a team over the cap can't recover from losing a top player

So they absolutely have to overpay, or immediately start rebuilding.

I’m not sure how you fix that in the CBA. Lowering the max means the teams with a genuine max player will have even more of an advantage, as they become an even bigger bargain.

Memphis and Atlanta are still not helped to compete in that scenario.

What you really need is simply a hard cap and to do away with the current

fixed contract structure. If Chris Bosh wants the biggest contract possible let him sign for 80% of the cap and play with a bunch of scrubs.

The owners lack the ability to police their own spending. Smart business people can’t stop themselves from doing stupid things financially in sports so they can’t operate in a world without a cap or luxury tax. So the next best thing to a free market is a hard cap if you want salaries structure to reflect the fact that their are less than ten true difference makers in the league and everybody else is grouped in much larger tiers.

by Scotter on Jul 1, 2010 7:11 PM CDT up reply actions

A hard cap would do it

But of course it would never happen. Not only would the players form another league before they agreed to that, the owners probably don’t even want that. The kind of parity that would force would be scary for everybody.

Plus the logistical nightmare of getting the Lakers salary down under the cap.

So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

A different Idea

I always thought there should be a system where the contract signed by a player stays with the team that signed him, for salary cap purposes, even if the player is traded. So if talent wise the Lakers wanted to trade Kobe for Darko they could, but their cap would be bound by their own signings.

I just think that if I’m Lebron, and my right hand man on the team is already prepared to be my Scottie Pippen and he’s 4 years younger than me, that he’s the guy I want to grow with and try to win rings with.

Forbes has the Knicks presentation to Lebron

http://blogs.forbes.com/sportsmoney/2010/07/lebron-james-what-the-knicks-told-lebron-new-york-and-make-billion-dollars/

They have the 15 slides.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

by NBA Observer on Jul 1, 2010 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Here's the response..

1) More money in Cleveland than Chicago? Are you fucking kidding me.
2) MJ is a billionaire, from an era when guys made less money and there was less media opportunities and advertising opportunities, how the hell does not become one in Chicago?

by Grinder in Training on Jul 1, 2010 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

yep

wasn’t any basketball talking going on…all about money.

"Of all the things in the world losing isn't so bad; it just starts to feel like it does when you do it for so long"

by ninerfanNVA on Jul 1, 2010 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions

And the money isn't even accurate

The fact is that stats are lies. I know this because I have a stats degree. You can pretty much take any set of data and mix it around with the data to get the desired result. Lebron James is the best player of this generation. That fact alone makes him a outlier and very difficult to forecast. I really hope he has someone with some math sense on his team.

Gar is going to fuck the shit out of your mother

by Bullbo Baggins on Jul 1, 2010 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not really a bad tactic

They can’t do much to talk up the basketball, and its pretty well documented that LBJ is into the business side of things.

Add in that athletes tend to have egos (not that other people don’t!) – LBJ might figure he can make them a respectable team.

Really, it’s their only shot.

by wjb1492 on Jul 1, 2010 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

the thing is

he’s got to win at some point to make that much money. if he goes to NY, it will already become clear he’s about the money, and immediately some people will lose respect for him. if he doesn’t win there, then it just gets worse. eventually people will simply stop responding to him if he’s just a guy that loses in the semi-finals every year. be part of a dynasty, and you’re still getting endorsement deals well beyond retirement. who’s gonna care about LeBron in 10 years if he wins nothing? probably nobody.

by M 80 on Jul 1, 2010 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying I think they're right

I’m saying New York had virtually no other option for a pitch. And they had to come up with something. They couldn’t walk in there and beg him to save their jobs, and everyone knows how bad they’ve been basketball-wise.

by wjb1492 on Jul 1, 2010 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

But they talked up the wrong business

The majority of the presentation seemed to be about how LBJ would help the Knicks not how the Knicks would help LBJ. If anything it seemed like a reason to go to the Nets.

by MrPants on Jul 1, 2010 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

this is hilarious

I hope LBJ realizes how stupid that was.

by The90sBullsRevival on Jul 1, 2010 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I love the basic overall premise

Please come to New York! But if you don’t want to come to the Knicks please stay in Cleveland!!!

And notice how the Nets were conveniently left out.

by Scotter on Jul 1, 2010 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously a 1% chance of a billion dollars in Chicago?

If LeBron has anyone worth a damn on his team, he’d see this report and tell them to get the fuck out. If you are going to blatantly lie to me, I don’t want to work for you.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 1, 2010 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

That was my immediate reaction as well.

He’s 50x likelier to make a billion dollars in New York than in Chicago? That’s BS.

by dakoose on Jul 1, 2010 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

It's just.. unacceptable math. I mean it's not just biased, it's a god damn lie.

There is a big difference. The fact they put this out in public.. just embarrassing. What the hell are they thinking? They have to know this information looks like a joke, how is an agent go to look at the Knicks when they know the team is just outright lying to it’s players?

More money in Cleveland than Chicago? They should be ashamed.

No one who needs a legitimate analysis would ever go to this company. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Knicks ownership happens to own Interbrand. Unbelievable.

by Grinder in Training on Jul 1, 2010 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

This might tell us how poorly New York thought of it's chances,

that they’d have to come out and drop this pile of shit on Lebron.

I wonder if Bosh would take whatever comes as part of a James Johnson sign and trade.

It wouldn’t quite be the max, but I would guess it would work out to him making more money per a year than a 5 year max signing with us outright. Then we would still have Gibson as our 6th man.

Sucks that we have to go the entire weekend with trying to log on to BAB and the various sites to see if the bulls sign anyone. I would much rather PAR-TAY all weekend in either celebration of signing a big name FA or drinking my sadness away from the bulls not signing one of them.

In any case i wish just one would sign tomorrow!

Tony Allen has received interest from many teams in the first day of free agency. Last night, several teams looking for a defensive stopper made calls inquiring about Allen and it’s clear there are teams ready to bid for his services.

The Los Angeles Lakers, New Jersey Nets, Miami Heat, and Chicago Bulls are among the teams that expressed interest in the guard.
