Doc Rivers Was Bulls First Choice
Sources have told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that the reason the Bulls did not immediately go after Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau is that their first choice was his boss, Doc Rivers.
But after checking through back channels, Chicago determined that Rivers is most likely either to serve the last year of his contract with the Celtics, or step away from coaching for a year to spend more time with his family.
The thought of waiting, and thus not knowing if the Celtics would even grant them permission to talk to Rivers or if Rivers would seriously entertain a move, convinced the Bulls to shift their focus and go after the next-best candidate who wouldn't preclude a shot at LeBron James. That put them on the fast track to landing Thibodeau. While not everyone was sold on him at first, Thibodeau apparently impressed the doubters in his face-to-face interviews.
