Ford on Simmons' podcast: Lebron's coming to Chicago
Chad Ford tells this story:
LeBron heard that after every Bulls game MJ went to Gibson's Steakhouse and sat at a specific table with a specific waiter. When in Chicago, Lebron goes to Gibson's and sits at that table with that waiter.
During the Chicago draft camp Chad Ford went to Gibson's, found the waiter, and asked him what he thought about Lebron. The waiter told him Lebron is coming, that Lebron had told him to reserve this table for him.

Someone is trying to encourage us to ask questions?
He may not be married, but he's got plenty of Thibo-hoes.

I was *just* about to post this somewhere
Listening to the podcast now.
It’s towards the end, ~39-40 minutes in.

You don’t know how high the sky is / the square mileage of earth or what pi is." - Nas
The NBA is all about "shadows."
Except the real players, the ones who want to win titles, look at them as “legacies.” It’s no wonder the Lakers have had title contending teams every decade since the 60s, so far (Okay, not really the 90s; that 91 team was more a remnant from the 80s).
And it’s no wonder why a Lakers-Celtics seven-game final got the highest finals ratings since MJ choked out the Jazz.
“Shadow.” Pfft. LeBron seems like the guy who’d embrace the “shadow” as a legacy while striving to cast his own shadow.
I just hope we’re not being jerked around.

Is this Simmons guy not very smart?
or he is just, you know, playing dumb explain things?
by JustAnotherFan on Jun 25, 2010 10:44 PM CDT reply actions
Simmons speaks from the "fan's perspective"
He’s supposed to represent what the average fan thinks of players and overvalues intangibles in comparison to the rest of his colleagues when discussing players/franchises.
I do think he dumbs down his columns/podcasts to attract a wider audience.
If you have a chance, flip through “The Book of Basketball”. It’s extremely through and a detailed analysis of the history of the NBA. Simmons definitely has a deep understanding of NBA history.

I've been saying this for a whole year now...
Not the Gibson’s/Waiter/MJ thing, but how Lebron would embrace MJ’s legacy instead of being scared off by it. He’s big into NBA history, and to possibly have his jersey hanging right next to Jordan’s is just too good to pass up, especially when it makes all the sense in the world in a basketball sense as well.
I know, Miami has 23 retired as well, but still…not the same.

Same
I’ve always thought if he was a real player worthy of having on the team, he’d embrace playing in Jordan’s shadow. I never saw it the other way.

Hmm
“I want to win.” – Lebron
“I’m changing my number.” – Lebron

If you fast forward...
you’re missing a lot of good information. Simmons and his guests always have great nuggets of information. It was on his podcasts that I first heard of World Wide Wes. And, he’s the first person on record that Lebron/Bosh to Chicago was the most likely scenario. And, I think that was back in January before they even made cap clearing trades.
oh I know.. and I like all that.. but
they can get so side tracked it’s kinda hard to listen without getting bored.. kinda like Doug.
Except...
He forgot to mention the tone of the conversation between LeBron and the waiter, which probably involved a lot of laughter. The waiter probably goofingly said 50 times before this remark, “You’re coming here right?”
I think you missed the point of the story.
Lebron goes to MJs restaurant, his table, his waiter because he idolizes him so much. Imagine someone you idolized for most of your life, and in literally a matter of days you have the opportunity to live out your idol’s life as your own. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that most people will never get. And, to boot, it’s the choice that will get his the most championships and long term money. I don’t know how he goes anywhere else.
I thought
the completely unreliable “sources” about why x player was coming were usually friends of realtors who allegedly showed the player around chicago?
DEJESUS!!!
