Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

The Cleveland Cavaliers' superstar will visit with individual clubs at a neutral site once the free-agency period begins July 1.

James' decision throws a monkey wrench in the plans of several clubs that hoped to sell him on non-basketball-related enticements such as the vibrancy of their city, the social life it may afford, or the A-list celebrities that support their teams.

James, the most coveted player in this historic free agent class, wants the focus to be entirely on basketball and doesn't want it to turn into a spectacle.

Advantage : Bulls (again)

[More Lebron - but heck, that's what everyone wants to talk about right now anyway, right? - substitute ed.]

The Knicks, who also planned to give James a tour of New York City, are going ahead with plans to bring Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on visits to New York, according to sources, but they will have to meet with their top target, James, on neutral turf.

Ha, New York. You suck.

EVERY rumor is he's going to Chicago

EVERY story is he’s going to Chicago
EVERY indication is he’s going to Chicago

by Option27 on Jun 25, 2010 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions

It just makes me think

The only reason he wouldn’t come to Chicago is not because of Jordan’s shadow.

It’s because maybe the chance to win a ring with this team is too easy.

Maybe he thinks if he humps ship to Chicago, people will bash on him because he took the easy road to a championship or championships?

That's part of the reason I question him going to Miami

How much credit would he get for a title if he won it on a Dream Team like that one would be. At least with us, we have the great core, but he’s far and away the number one option.

He may not be married, but he's got plenty of Thibo-hoes.

They weren't a for sure thing back then

They didn’t have Ray Allen when he first got traded.

And people still questioned their age/health

by Option27 on Jun 25, 2010 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, they got Allen on draft day.

They got Garnett later on in free agency.

The correct response is: they were traded, so of course they didn’t accuse him of jumping ship. He was a lot older anyway.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

I'm starting to think all the WWW leaks were all released to let Knicks and Cavs fans down easy

He knows there’s gonna be a lot of dissapointed people out there, so instead of making it a celabratory event, he’s making it very business like. This is a very wise choice imo. It gives off the vibe that he truly only cares about winning

He may not be married, but he's got plenty of Thibo-hoes.

by Juiceboxjerry on Jun 25, 2010 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd still be concerned WWW is "leaking" information for the wrong reasons.

I’m extremely nervous and I don’t think anything should be written off as a foregone conclusion. I’m probably more uncertain than anyone else I’ve seen post here. I’d love for LeBron to come (go, since I’ll be moving) to Chicago, but I’m not sold that it’s all that likely. There are 5 other teams in play that can make pretty interesting offers, although I agree that it makes the most sense for him to come to Chiago.

That, and, no offense to the Miami BaB'ers,

but why would he want to build his legacy in Miami? It’s a great city, but as far as being a great sports town, it’s pretty awful. Nobody gives a shit about those teams unless they’re winning rings, and even then the interest is marginal. That’s why I fear him going to New York more, at least he’ll be fully appreciated there.

About 6 days ago he said Lebron is probably staying in Cleveland. Someone posted the video on here.

by wilsoneads on Jun 25, 2010 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Wait a second...

Lebron doesn’t want it to turn into a spectacle? Really? This whole thing has been a huge spectacle for how long now? Hopefully he’s grown tired of it all and has decided to finally get serious and just come to Chicago. What a spectacle that would be.

by DRose23 on Jun 25, 2010 6:51 PM CDT reply actions

And on a more hilarious note

Who else thinks it’s freakin awesome that stupid New York had to cancel it’s stupid party. I love it. Hopefully they got the memo.

by DRose23 on Jun 25, 2010 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions   2 recs

You know, in a way this is even more spectacle

Changing plans on a whim. And if you think of Lebron as having a huge ego, you can look at this as more evidence that he thinks the world revolves around him – he won’t go to them, they have to come to him.

Someone asked KC in his mailbag about Lebron sort of running the team in Cleveland, and he didn’t think the Bulls would extend special privileges. Could make it interesting. (And no, I’m not talking bending the headband rule…. Of course, KC also isn’t the final word for the team, no matter what we all think….)

Off the court, there are multiple reports of the influence he held over the Cavaliers’ organization and how much the organization allowed him to do. I can’t see the Bulls allowing his entourage to fly on the team charter or even enter the locker room. So it will be interesting to see how much, if at all, these things matter to LeBron.

(And yes, I have much dislike for the man’s approach to life to set aside if/when he does sign)

by wjb1492 on Jun 25, 2010 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

The basketball world DOES revolve around Lebron.

He was on the cover of SI as a Junior IN HIGH SCHOOL! And all the hype that he would be the greatest ever and he has actually lived up to it so far. He still has a ways to go to get there, but he is on the right path.

LBJ never went to college. He went straight from a high school phenom to being drafted by Cleveland. He never got recruited. He never got to hold his press conference where he announced where he would be committing to play college ball. He never got to choose! This is his college experience. He wants everyone to want him and he wants to wait until he hears everyone’s pitch, make sure they don’t have anything extra up their sleeve that he hasn’t already seen or heard and then make a decision.

for Lebron staying in Cleveland. He’s been saying that and giving reasons for it from the beginning. If Lebron doesn’t come here then him staying in there would be the best case scenario for us. We’ll just go out and get JJ and Boozer or Lee and whoop up on the Cavs for the next 3-5 years.

Has anybody stopped to think

That Bosh isn’t the best player to go with Lebron. Because contrary to poular belief, Chris Bosh isn’t a classic post up player that you constantly feed the ball to. This guy likes to take his jumpshots too. Plus Lebron isn’t the greatest outside shooter either. I think JJ would actually be a better fit on this team with Rose, Noah, and Lebron.

They would kill on the pick-and-roll. They’re a GREAT fit together, IMO.

by Dils on Jun 25, 2010 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Good shooters are all over the place. I think the team that gets the top tier FA’s it wants will sign a guy like Korver for the MLE. Getting JJ for the money he wants (which he will get somewhere) will be a mistake, he’s too old for a max or near max contract. Lebron+Bosh is the answer. If the opposition team somehow manages to cover Lebron…and Bosh…and Rose, one of those guys will get the ball to a reliable shooter like Korver. Getting good bigs is difficult, getting good shooters is not.

by CavsLebronFan on Jun 26, 2010 2:09 AM CDT up reply actions

Who needs 3s when you have 3 guys that can break ankles every time they touch the ball?

I mean, really though. You can’t double team Bosh, LBJ, and Rose. There’s always Noah for low-post offense since he appears to be learning how to score. If Deng’s still on the team, he has a fine mid-ranged jumper if somehow none of Bosh/Rose/James get to the rim on a particular possession.

I know I'm getting ahead of myself but I don't care..

but can you imagine if this goes down and they win titles like you know they will.. what this does for the Bulls brand? Like could this inspire other generations that never watched MJ on TV to admire LeBron’s Bulls.. just blows the Chicago Bulls into like levels of Celtic and Laker legend.. maybe even the argument that the Bulls brand ( to take from Gar) gets just shot into space… I mean CHINA… my god this could just change so many things on so many levels for the Bulls and the NBA that we can’t even fathom… I would think.

I think they would surpass the Lakers and Celtics as far as franchise branding goes

Most of those Celtics teams won rings before anyone even cared about hoops. The Bulls have been on top during the rise of all the media hype, so more people naturally know about them. It would be incredible for the city and the team

You're underestimating the Bulls brand internationally.

If you ever go overseas, you’ll find more Bulls fans than anything else. Great story – I’m in a pub in the English countryside about 5 years ago. This tiny place in a tiny town. I’m with another Chicago friend. A guy nearby notices out American accents, asks where we’re from and we tell him. He rolls up his sleeve and shows us his Chicago Bulls tattoo. True story.

I'm well aware of the Bulls brand internationally

And I think suggesting that we could possibly pull even with the Lakers and Celtics in the ranking of all-time NBA franchises acknowledges this. I think our disagreement lies elsewhere, which is fair.

is that Brian Windhorst, the Cavs Beat writer, and a guy that definitely knows his shit, has been saying that he thinks Lebron will stay, but if he doesn’t, he thinks he’s going to NYC. He’s probably one of the main guys to trust in all of this mess

"Neutral site."

I just have this picture in my brain where Lebron’s on a runway in Akron, and all the interested teams have contingents meet him. He idly points at each contingent in turn, and they humbly step forward and speak their piece. When the Clippers try to say something he just waves a hand and a group of suits whisk them away. And in the end, he stoically nods and reboards his plan, simply saying, “Don’t call me; I’ll call you.”

And for whatever reason, in this creepy scenario in my head, I’m afraid Gar Forman will remind everyone of some comic book villain. And that’s the worst case scenario.

Personally, I can’t see the two of them on the same team together, not at this point, anyway. Both guys need to be ball-handing scorers. At least D-Rose doesn’t need to shoot that much.

I just think they were wary about talking about the Hinrich trade.

Sure, multiple outlets had reported it, but it wasn’t official. I was listening to ESPN radio when the Bulls made the pick, and it was practically the same thing. They spent little time talking about the pick, and the host made just a few passing references to how the pick “may” be traded along with Hinrich to the Wiz. Also, they were rushing to interview Luke Babbitt, so there’s that, too.

i want paxson to do a short blog entry the way cuban did when he traded nash to the suns…

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

by piccolomair on Jun 26, 2010 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Nash(2-time MVP) and Kirk .. analogy ;-) piccolomair?

Cuban probably endorsed that trade, Paxson probably was mum because his past decisions have mostly proven a lack of evaluation and non visionary. Paxson’s goal is to position himself in obscurity because he’s fortunate to still have an executive NBA job compared to similar’s (Kerr,Prichard,Ferry) who all exceeded him times-over in their tenure as GMs. (All won 50 games in a season or better…not Paxson).

Plus, Bulls are in the LBJ Free agent wars, so Bulls need to downplay John Paxson’s stupid profiling “no headBand” rule which is still in effect, and we all know Lebron still likes to wear headBands.

he just did PAY washington (#17 + $3mil) to take a bad contract, but as you yourself state, the bulls are in the lbj free agent wars! in much better position now too, agreed?

don’t you know better than to wait ’til the front office is looking BAD to slam them?

and how is the headband rule profiling? or should we ask brian scalabrine?

btw, gar paxsdorf has to remain “mum” until july 8. it’s the rules.

by piccolomair on Jun 26, 2010 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Hinrich upside still exists! Certainly

In the right system, mentoring and coaching without excessive somewhat unmerited praise as Paxson instituted, I believe Kirk has both the skills and mental attitude to elevate his game to a higher level than it has been shown. As Nash has proven, “lift” (or vertical) isn’t always necessary to be very successful in the NBA.

Kirk strikes me as a guy that when challenged consistently is motivated to elevate, but when given the “keys to the city” he tends toward complacency moreso.

Therefore, in my opinion, Paxson’s approach, filtered throughout the Bull’s organization (including influencing the coaches), to producing the best out of “Kirk Hinrich” was strategically “wrong”

Great mentoring coach, for example: Jerry Sloan… a guy who resist to sugar coat anything or any player..

New July 1st update:

The Bulls have emerged as the favorites for James, and the Heat and Nets are making a strong push, too. The Knicks and Clippers appear to be longer shots to sign James. It's really not funny

They appreciate the guy, even if many around here don’t. We all don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, but it’s not hard to imagine the like a guy who puts the team first and doesn’t cause problems. The org deals with these guys beyond stat watching.

by wjb1492 on Jun 25, 2010 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

It's pretty funny that he got paid about twice what he should have been.

I realize you like Kirk and defend him, but it shouldn’t bother you that we make fun of him. The guy has made an insane living off of basketball. No other team in the NBA would have paid him nearly what the Bulls did. They (over) rewarded him for his grit, hustle, and leadership, and he’s beyond set for life. He’ll be okay.

Let's sign LeBron and dance our way to the NBA championship. It'll be so crazy!

by Illini15 on Jun 25, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Guys get overpaid all the time in the NBA

Kirk played hard and has been a good guy. It’s no secret that the org has valued him beyond his on court, stat contribution to winning. It bothers me that, even with him now traded, some people keep at it. He’s gone, it all turned out really well for the Bulls, and you still can’t appreciate what he’s contributed to the team? I ignored the first 24 hours of it, but there’s just nothing funny about that part you bolded. The org liked him – they recognized the need to trade him for cap space and did it, but it doesn’t mean they didn’t value him or wish there weren’t a way to keep him.

And I think your wrong about him getting paid. That contract was done way before the economic crisis and when Kirk was playing really well. It looks bad now, like a lot of contracts made several years ago do in this economic state. But who foresaw the cap actually dropping back then?

by wjb1492 on Jun 26, 2010 12:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Look,

I appreciated Kirk’s defense (he was really damn good at times on that end), his versatility, and the fact that he played hard at all times. But he got way overpaid, and although that’s not his fault, it made him easy to criticize.

That said, I appreciate what he did do, I enjoyed making fun of him when he sucked, but he was a good guy who played hard, and I wish him well. I hope that Washington ditches Gil so Kirk can start, because I’d like to see him enjoy the rest of his career instead of wasting away on the bench.

Let's sign LeBron and dance our way to the NBA championship. It'll be so crazy!

by Illini15 on Jun 26, 2010 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Like I said, I still liked to make fun of him because it was too easy of a target.

No need to take personal offense.

I wish him well. It just so happened his skill set and bloated roster were a bad fit with a middling offensive team that needed major offensive help. I hope he does well in Washington.

Let's sign LeBron and dance our way to the NBA championship. It'll be so crazy!

by Illini15 on Jun 26, 2010 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not taking personal offense

I disagreed with you. I don’t think that statement was funny. He was a “glue guy” – much though that is mocked around here. That was basically about as true of a statement as you could find. I’m still not sure what was so funny about it. That the org liked Kirk, but realized they needed to trade him (or Lu) to make a calculated gamble on free agency? That KC used the phrase “glue”? Or that KC suggested Kirk has intangible value or was actually a leader on the team?

by wjb1492 on Jun 26, 2010 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions

well

there’s a definite difference between valuing someone and having an “emtional attachment”, which is what the article said it was.

At one point, yes, he did provide value…but becoming so emotionally attached to him should never get in the way of getting BETTER. Like I said in the other post, this trade happened two years later than what it should have.

We all liked Kirk at some point (more in ‘06), but in all honesty he hasn’t been decent in several seasons. He was making over 9M a year either being injured or playing very mediocre. Him being a “good guy” should never come into the equation. That’s why I’ve always hated the so-called Bulls philosophy of drafing “good guys” from winning programs. Seriously, where has that gotten them? One playoff series win in 12 years?

GM’s, presidents, and owners in professional athletics aren’t paid to keep good guys around. Cohesiveness and chemisty IS good, but it doesn’t win games. I’d rather have good players than good guys.

by NormVanBeer on Jun 26, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

id rather have both...

and the bulls have only drafted good guys since 2003, so while its still not great, its 1 playoff series won in 7 years.

I get your thoughts on trading for talent and be objective about it but you make it seem like it was impossible to win a championship with kirk on this team, if the bulls had traded deng instead, and got lebron and bosh, the team of rose, hinrich, lebron, bosh, noah would still be a championship caliber team. For all instances derrick rose is a good guy who is also a good player, there are such things, its not a one or other choice….

I also think its easier for fans to be objective (believe it or not) on a players personality vs his playing ability because we dont interact with said players every day

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

by piccolomair on Jun 26, 2010 2:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying you can't have both

but for the last several seasons it seems the Bulls only put emphasis on one side. It’s not so much a testament to a fault of the player, more on the org. I’ve always said that it’s not Kirk’s fault for the size or length of his contract, or for how much he’s been over-valued…it’s the org.

I don’t mind the Bulls liking/wanting “good guys”…but they’re shooting themselves in the foot by valuing those types of guys WAY more than just plain good players.

Derrick fell into their laps, so you can’t give them a gold star because they chose him, they were supposed to. It just so happens that he’s good in BOTH senses.

by NormVanBeer on Jun 26, 2010 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually when he got the extension

it wasn’t that bad. Remember everyone thought he was on his way to becoming one of the better point guards in the league; he had just been named to the USA basketball team a couple months prior. Unfortunately it turned out to be an aberration rather than growth, but I think plenty of teams would have given him that contract at that time.

Wtf Colangelo might betray his hometown and help the Nyets get Lebron:
But that description contradicted a Bergen (N.J.) Record report early Saturday in which Jerry Colangelo was touted as the leading candidate to replace Thorn. The report, which hinted that Colangelo could have some role in the Nets’ free-agent visit with James next week in Ohio, rekindled speculation that arose during All-Star weekend in Dallas. At that time, when Prokhorov’s bid for the Nets was still being considered by the NBA’s Board of Governors, Colangelo said he wasn’t pursuing any jobs but would listen if the Nets called. The managing director of USA Basketball, Colangelo would be a key asset in the Nets’ pursuit of James or other free agents from the 2008 Olympic team that won gold in Beijing.

Best part about this isn't the loss of NYC's glamour advantage:

it’s that it decreases the possibility of JJ as a Bull. The point of JJ, from my thinking, was to draw Lebron. However, if Lebron goes on July 1st or 2nd (take a night to mull it over?), and we sign him, every free agent wants to be with us. We can choose between PFs to round out the roster, maneuver with Deng…

The timing of the great LBJ-fest is much more important than the place. And again: it goes in our favor.

Unfortunately, I see LeBron signing with the Bulls. Rose, LeBron, Bosh, and Noah would be the Eastern Conference favorites for the next five years. The question is: Do the Cavs do a sign and trade with the Bulls for say Luol Deng and Brad Miller and draft picks? or do we just let him go and start over?

Be afraid be very afraid!!!

LeBron, Bosh, and Rose are scary for sure. But Noah… meh.

It is hard for me to post because this is so huge I don’t want to get too excited. I know I’m not objective but if you care about winning LeBron comes to Chicago. I am hoping he makes a decision relatively quickly; maybe by July 5th. This seems surreal to me. I honestly did not believe we had any chance of getting him until Cleveland lost to Boston. If Bulls get Lebron, then a cheaper free agent in JJ Redick, coupled with D.Rose would fit the offense rather than Joe Johnson

Redick with his deadly outside shot (.439 & .392) would be a nighmare for opposing teams who attempt to double Rose or Lebron.

Plus Redick’s defense is much better since he entered the league

This might sound crazy but...

I know we’re very close to 2 max money spaces. It’s within a couple of million or so. I’ve seen that they’re still shopping Deng around. But here’s a thought. If we think that Deng is actually a good 5th player on the dream roster, why don’t the Bulls see if he’s willing to take a pay cut. It wouldn’t even have to be that much. Like maybe re-sign him to a 5-year $10million a year deal, maybe a little less. Chances are he’d say no. But, at least they’d give him the option of being part of the potential dynasty team. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

by rinconen on Jun 26, 2010 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

we discussed this in another thread

the NBA is not like other leagues where you can re-negotiate a contract. We can add on years for the cheap, but what is signed is signed and what we are paying Deng is what he is going to earn unless we release him from the contract – in which case, he still mostly counts against the cap.

Are you guys saying that all NBA contracts...

are guaranteed? Or just Deng’s? Thanks for the info dan. I didn’t realize NBA contracts were non-renegotiable. Seems kind of crappy. I mean, the player will already get their money if that’s their perogative. But, to not allow flexibility for a player to take a pay cut to stay with their team of choice seems crappy. Especially considering how the cap changes from year to year and affects roster changes, particularly this year.

by rinconen on Jun 27, 2010 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

all NBA contracts are guaranteed

even when they release a player, they agree to pay nearly in full of his contract – or, what usually happens is, they end up having to pay something like half of the contract they had if/when someone else signs them. It’s truly a horrible and stupid system, and I don’t know all the particulars, but I do know that you cannot change a contract as it is (which is why you don’t have any hold outs in the NBA like you do in the NFL), and I do know that releasing someone still counts against the cap (which is why expiring contracts are trade bait, no matter how awful the contract or player is.)

A true friend stabs you in the front - Oscar Wilde

by dantheman3k on Jun 27, 2010 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, there are non-guaranteed contracts, but it has to be specified in the contract itself

There are also partially guaranteed contracts. Otherwise a team is on the hook for the full contract amount unless they negotiate a buyout and release the guy. And yes, the buyout still counts against the cap.
