ed. note: From the Fanshots. Oh my, THIS is what I wanted, not the proposed Deng deal. Deal can't be official until July...and part of me won't believe it until Hinrich is actually holding up a different jersey.

and what are we gonna get back?

They’re not giving up the first pick and we certainly don’t want Arenas or Josh Howard.

I also would have preferred that pick swap deal with Indiana

But at least we get to keep Deng, if for nothing else than as trade bait in the future (assuming we get LeBron).

by DickFractal on Jun 24, 2010 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

We aren't getting Lebron.

Just is not going to happen. We have a better shot at getting Dirk.

In that case

We keep Deng and get JJ and Bosh. Point is, keeping Deng gives us much better flexibility.

I'd love that.

I really want them to play in this draft, though.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

I can't believe I'm about to live in the "Post Hinrich Era"
Since it’s a good-faith deal for the time being, there remains a chance it could fall apart. But according to one source, the Sacramento Kings are prepared to make a similar deal with the Bulls in the Wizards’ stead if that were to happen.

I figured that once his contract ended, he’d take a small deal to stay with the Bulls. You know, since they overpaid him by so much and all.

I hope we figure out a way for this to be Bosh

Move Deng to the 2, and as Thibs said, work on his corner 3s

also what are the odds we find a 2nd rounder to draft Scheyer? Gotta have our token white guy.

by The90sBullsRevival on Jun 24, 2010 2:45 PM CDT reply actions

Deng might be too slow to guard guards.

Although I think he could make a great (albeit very overpriced) 6th man. And if we play LeBron at the 4, Deng can play his natural position. AND we still have Deng available as the centerpiece of a sign-and-trade (my big reason why I wasn’t excited about trading him for cap space).

by arjoseph on Jun 24, 2010 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah if we get Lebron

by J Theory on Jun 24, 2010 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Most of the time, sure.

But the great thing about LeBron is that he can play almost anywhere. If you don’t have some small ball sets with him as a 4 to take advantage of matchups, then you’re not doing your job. (“You” being Thibs, in this case.)

by arjoseph on Jun 24, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

i would like to see if bron/bosh/deng would work, rather than give up the notion before even bothering to try

(with lbj especially) the 2 and 3 positions can be interchangeable on offense. the key with going big is if the players are quick enough defensively.

it could pay off tremendously, since a (unobserved by the haters?) big plus of deng is that he’s best off the ball. and you can’t build a real team like an all-star fantasy team, with everyone dominating the ball.

Hinrich deal should be a game changer in LeBron sweepstakes. Bulls will now have enough space to land 2 max free agents.

Team A would have a trade exception worth $(y-x) million (if they were giving up more salary).

So if we were to S + T nothing for Bosh, Toronto would get a $16.5 million trade exception.

$13.4 million if the Bulls sign him outright

We had a stopgap SG before

and one that would have been fine between Rose and Lebron. Now there’s not a single SG on the roster and no draft pick to get one. You have to believe that the Bulls want a dominant SG in front of a minimum salary SG, and not multiple minimum salary SGs. That kind of glaring hole can cost you a title.

Trading Deng for a SG is still possible, of course.

So…gotta say it: this sort of vindicates the Ben Gordon thing.

Even if the deal can't be announced until July 8

We should know almost immediately if there was a deal. I just can’t imagine the team would go through the dog-and-pony show of introducing their new player at a press conference if they’d already agreed to trade him.

Does anyone recall a similar situation in a prior year with another team? I’d be interested if we could glean anything from how the Bulls handle this draft pick in the media over the next few days (and hours).

I don't remember anything with teams announcing players

There have been a bunch where they interviewed someone for draft coverage wearing the “wrong” hat – but it’s always been abundantly clear that a trade was definitely in the works and everyone has treated it sort of like a joke.

Getting two max free agents plus the extensions for Rose and Noah means instant Luxury tax in upcoming years which, if Reinsdorf is to be believed, the Bulls will pay for a contender.

I have no idea what to think right now. ThibbyGarPaxDorf has never been agressive before like this

For one thing, some places are reporting we have enough for two max deals (is lebron and bosh max), and others are saying we don’t. If we don’t….then why the absolute flying fuck would we have made this trade? Unless they firmly “know” Joe Johnson+Rose+Noah+Deng+Thibs+Chicago is more attractive to LeBron than Wade+Bosh+Miami+Riely+no tax+weather+girls.

In my opinion, we’re still at a huge disadvantage.

Also, why do I feel like this trade is far less likely to happen than people are reporting? It seems every year on draft day there are a ton of wink, wink deals that don’t come to fruitation and just fizzle out.

Okay the minimum salary for a rookie (and roster holds)

S&T Deng for JJ

Here

Lebron $16.5 mil
Bosh – $16.5 mil
Rose – $5.5 mil
Noah – $3.1 mil

Total from those 4 – $41.6 mil

Cap projects to be ~$56 mil, leaving us $14.4 mil in cap space. However, we’d have to set aside a little over $3 mil in cap space as roster holds for the 7 unfilled roster spots, meaning JJ would have to accept a deal starting at about $11.5 mil. That’d be turning down a lot of money.

Brad Miller is god.

Aldridge . . .
The Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls have agreed to a trade that will send Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich and Chicago’s first-round pick, 17th overall, to Washington for a future second-round pick, a league source confirmed Thursday. The deal will clear Hinrich’s $9 million salary off of the Bulls’ salary cap for next season, as well as the $1.3 million in guaranteed first-year money they would have had to pay their first-round pick, and reduce Chicago’s payroll for next season to $22.8 million—which would, if the current projection of a $56.1 million salary cap for the 2010-11 season holds, allow the Bulls to be able to sign two maximum salaried free agents starting next week.

The Wizards have coveted the 29-year-old Hinrich for several seasons, wanting his veteran presence in their backcourt and his ability to play both guard spots. Besides his on-court skill Washington believes that Hinrich can be a solid mentor for John Wall, whom the Wizards will take with the first pick in tonight’s NBA Draft. Hinrich was a good instructor for Derrick Rose, the Bulls’ star guard who was also taken first overall in the Draft two years ago.

A true friend stabs you in the front - Oscar Wilde

by dantheman3k on Jun 24, 2010 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay, $22.8 mil for 5 people

I think that means 7 roster holds of 500k each, so $26.3 mil. Two outright sign max deals = 16.6mil x 2 = $33.2 mil + $26.3 mil = over the cap. If that math is right, we’re still a few million from getting Bosh and LeBron. I could very well be wrong.

It would suck

Beasley is a major project. His offensive skills as a young player aren’t nearly as effective against NBA defenses. And his defense is really awful.

He’s not a particularly good rebounder either since most of his big numbers in high school and college came off this odd “throw it at the rim” offense. He’d just clean up his own misses for putbacks.

Ehhhhhh

I’m not loving this deal over anything involving Deng. I know Deng is a better player, but his contract is one of the worst in basketball at the moment. If you can dump him on anyone, you should do it. I thought Hinrich had a little more value.

But if it results in two start free agents, I’m happy. If they strike out again, it was a bad deal.

by Niwrad on Jun 24, 2010 4:27 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Deng's deal isn't in the top 100

worst deals in the NBA. He’s getting paid exactly what he’s worth as an above average starting 3 guard who scores rebounds and defends.

Hinrich was getting paid starter’s money for what had to become a backup role on the Bulls as he is simply not a good enough scorer to start as a 2 guard.

by runningman on Jun 24, 2010 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

It is a real bad contract

Sorry, his contract goes to 2014. They’ll be paying him over 13 and 14 million dollars in those last 2 years. The same two years that Rose will be starting his next contract. Not to mention smack dab in the middle of Noah’s next contract. So if you’re assuming the Bulls bring in 2 stars this offseason, you better plan on JR going way over the salary cap.

Deng is a good player, better than Hinrich. But he’s not worth close to that amount of money. He was the 3rd best player on an 8-seeded team in the East. He is making All-Star money. Not to mention that his game doesn’t seem to mesh well with Rose at all.

Like I said, I’d much rather have him off the books and much more flexibility to add a veteran role player or two in the coming years. If you put Lebron and someone else on this team in the offseason, you’re paying $13+ million for a guy who’d be lucky to score 10 points a game.

by Niwrad on Jun 24, 2010 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

by Grinder in Training on Jun 24, 2010 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

It will definitley be worse than average

If Deng declines the next 4 years. I think his last season was, in a lot of ways, his best season. His performance is worth like 10-12 million, so being paid 14 isn’t that bad. But if he declines, whoever has him is in a lot of trouble. Hinrich-esque trouble.

Surprised to see this too

I can’t imagine there wasn’t a team who wouldn’t want Hinrich on it, even as a bench guy. The Lakers could sure use someone to replace Fisher and Orlando could use some perimeter help. His contract isn’t good, but the final year is only $8 million and would make an attractive expiring contract.

They would be two nice role players who can knock down 3’s. Or maybe they’ll need to take a salary on like Hedo in a sign and trade for Bosh.

"more nothing"

that’s hilarious

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

On second thought, that had to have been posted before the Hinrich deal

The out of the draft part makes no sense otherwise. JOHN missed that one…

by YaoPau on Jun 24, 2010 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

he jumps high...

I bet Charlotte would match….

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

I'm reading comments about how the Bulls can't sign Bosh and James.

Can somebody clear this up for me?

They're around 2 mil short of being able to sign two max free agents

However the difference is negligible enough to where they should be able to work something out. That is, if they even want Bosh. Could be that they want Joe Johnson and won’t even have to give him the max. We shall see

He may not be married, but he's got plenty of Thibo-hoes.

Bosh wants to be the star

Bosh has made it clear he wants to be the star of wherever he goes. So I think it’s much more likely to see Lebron/Johnson, Lebron/Boozer, or Lebron/Lee than Lebron/Bosh.

by Niwrad on Jun 24, 2010 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Or, maybe that interview you're referriing to is over a year old

and people are way overreacting to it. At this point it’s almost an impossibility for him to go to a team where he’s THE man. Unless he wants to stay in Canada

He may not be married, but he's got plenty of Thibo-hoes.

Woj . . .
After pre-draft deals, here’s one team’s projection of summer cap space: Knicks, $34.2 million; Bulls, $29.1 mil.; NJ, $27.2; Miami, $26.2.

by Option27 on Jun 24, 2010 4:57 PM CDT reply actions

If Deng gets dumped too

I’d start to wonder if a deal is in place for Bosh already. Rumors were that Toronto would give up Bosh to anyone who would take Hedo with him. So maybe getting rid of both means they have to take on both contracts and still have room for Lebron.

by Niwrad on Jun 24, 2010 4:57 PM CDT reply actions

That's an interesting thought

But Bosh would have to sign-off on the deal to a team, and it seems a little too unlikely to believe that he’s already agreed to a S+T to Chicago.

Although, as (I think) YaoPau noted above, the Deng rumor likely pre-dated the Hinrich trade, and may no longer be valid (if it was valid to begin with, of course).

I thought about how the Bulls stack up to the Heat while driving to get tacos

Here’s my thinking: If the Bulls have Rose/Joe Johnson/Deng/Taj/Noah and the Heat have Wade/Bosh/Beasley, the Bulls could still have the edge.

The Heat might have the better roster, but both teams are so stacked that whatever team LeBron chooses automatically becomes the clear favorite, so minor differences in team quality don’t matter. At that point, LeBron can choose to win titles by sharing the spotlight with Wade, or be the undisputed man in Chicago.

by YaoPau on Jun 24, 2010 5:04 PM CDT reply actions

what if they unload Deng?

What’s better? Rose + Noah or Wade?

I like the former, but man.

how much our youngs can improve?
who will get the best ring chasers?
will pat riley coach?
will Thibs defense be awesome?
how will we use the extra money (left for the second FA)?

Yeah I think you only trade Deng for a top pick

We don’t need to clear out Deng, we need to clear out $4 mil, and I’d hate to lose a good player in the process. Al Farouq Aminu and Paul George won’t help us recruit any big names.

then we have alot of options in going about this…

trade deng for a draft pick
keep deng and package other players like taj or james johnson

Whole key is going after Bosh first

Everyone is going after Lebron … if we go after Bosh first, it’ll increase our chances of getting him (and Lebron) because if sign him first (and early), LeBron will have no choice but to sign with Bulls
