is joe johnson

a better defender than kobe? I think so…maybe im the only one

I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!

Kobe's defense is slightly overrated.

He shouldn’t be in the all defense team for 6 damm years

by T.Moore on May 5, 2010 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

true

And specially this year. He didn’t have such a great season

by JustAnotherFan on May 6, 2010 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions

all biases aside,

is rondo actually a good defender? My view of the Bulls vs Celtics series last year, at least in terms of point guards, was that defensive incompetence made their (rose and rondo) offensive performances look even better

by jeeves on May 5, 2010 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

supposedly he's good, and he does lead the league in steals.

but rose did burn him for 20+ points and caused rondo to get into foul trouble & finish with 4 points the last time we played them

Exactly!

Watching the final Bulls/Celtics matchup, the reason Rose DESTROYED Rondo was because it seemed like Rose knew all of Rondo’s gambles, probably from playing him so much in the playoffs.

Rondo would try to force Derrick into changing directions by sliding a lot, but with his handles and speed Rose avoided Rondo’s steal attempt on the crossover. It’s something that Paul and Rubio do a lot too, try and lull the defender into a crossover (instead of sagging on him) and use length to steal the ball.

Nate Robinson does the same thing. Short guys seem to do this a lot since backing off is dangerous when you don’t have the size/length to contest a jumper.

by WalmartSecurity on May 5, 2010 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

He's also allowed to gamble

Having Perkins and KG in the post to clean up the mistakes, that helps his steals stat considerably.

He’s ok defensively, but I agree not nearly as good as the rep.

I don't think so

I think he’s a good defender. Never rests. And I do hate his ugly face

by JustAnotherFan on May 6, 2010 8:44 AM CDT up reply actions

thanks guys

I assumed it was either something like that or just that Rose was the exception rather than the rule and continuously made him look silly…looks like the former

But using what you have is smart basketball

That said I wish Brad had broken Rondo’s nose in last year’s playoffs

Yeah

I’d say Varejao is a very effective defender….he gets in your face, he causes charges, he flops, he hustles. I see no issues wtih Anderson on the team. He’s a solid defender and that keeps him in the game.

by Tyrusmancrush on May 5, 2010 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

No...

But I am saying that his defensive contributions were overrated by some (you)…I think Tyrus was an above average help defender and below average man defender…he grabs stats like Rondo, but not prolific enough in any area to be recognized…ultimately, he is too inconsistent to be valued by others in the league…

Thomas, Miller, Salmons, James, Pargo, Gray, MLE, and (there is no LLE thanks to the Pargo signing) will not be here with a Max Free Agent...don't get too attached.

by Dionysus2.0 on May 5, 2010 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I actually think the opposite

I think when geared Tyrus’s man defense is amazing, and I think his weak side blocks, mask the fact that his team defense was mostly awful as he found himself out of position.

He has the tools to be the best defender in the league, but like verything else with TT, his mind’s just not always there unfortunately.

I thought as a man to man defender he was top notch, and he was good at the weak side help blocks, but he is so often out of position away from the ball, that I’d say his team defense is the worst aspect of his D game.

7/1/2010: D. Wade comes back home

by majoyenrac on May 6, 2010 7:48 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure why you have such a different perspective

but i too thought Tyrus’s man defense was awful.

If his man had an outside shot, you could virtually guarantee he’d be hitting wide open jumpers all day. Tyrus’s eyes were glued on the ball and the potential for him to get steals and weak-side blocks. If his man drifted outside, Tyrus would never realize it until it was too late.

If his man tried to back Tyrus down inside, you could count on him to give position away without any fight, as he tried to angle himself for a block. His blocks almost never happened on his own man, because he was so far under the basket by that time. This also allowed his man excellent position for offensive rebounds.

Vinny: "[Thrust] means pace, it means getting the ball out, it means getting your back to the sidelines, it means extending your outlets, it means getting the ball up the court into our early offense with plenty of time."

by runningman on May 6, 2010 9:25 AM CDT up reply actions

True points

I guess barring the outside Lewis type of PF, I thought Tyrus when focused really was a solid man to man defender, and saw more problems with him sitting there lost out of position not moving around the top of the FT line while his man undercut for an easy layup using a screen on a play….

I remember more the focus he could have on man to man D and be a stopper….and think his weak side D was flashier, but masked how he was so often out of position away from the ball.

Wow, the voters are really dumb.

In the past 10 years, just four team owners have not paid a luxury tax and are not on pace to pay one this year: Donald Sterling, Jerry Reinsdorf, Chris Cohen (Golden State), Bob Johnson (Charlotte).

Two owners’ teams averaged an operating income of over +$10 million per year while their teams have lost over 60% of their games: Donald Sterling and Jerry Reinsdorf.

by tyger1147 on May 6, 2010 7:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Artest is not the defender he once was.

Should have been Iguodala.

Is this sarcasm?

I haven’t seen any Sixers games this year…but Ron Artest’s hands are just so quick, and he’s pretty strong…Rondo got his nose for the ball from him.

by Stacey_Is_King on May 5, 2010 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

He's lost a step though

Although he appears to have regained it in the postseason.

by Poloplaya14 on May 6, 2010 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

Artest is still

pretty darn good when he’s trying hard, but he can’t keep up that kind of pace on a regular basis anymore.

On that note, Lebron doesn’t try for most of the game either. He routinely guards the other team’s weakest offensive player for most of the game and just roams around, and then puts himself on their best scorer for the last 3 minutes. I don’t think he should be rewarded over someone who checks the best scorer the whole game.

Vinny: "[Thrust] means pace, it means getting the ball out, it means getting your back to the sidelines, it means extending your outlets, it means getting the ball up the court into our early offense with plenty of time."

Iguodala has turned into one of the best perimeter defenders in the league.

He’s on a worthless team with no profile so he probably won’t get much credit, but I’m more impressed with him than Thabo or Artest.

Lebron's a flashier defender.

And in actuality, Lebron IS a great defender. Even while his blocks are fancy, they do have a huge impact, especially against teams (like the Bulls) where transition offense is crucial to success.

by WalmartSecurity on May 5, 2010 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Lebron

Has turned into a fantastic defender. He was killer in our series. Those fancy blocks, fancy as they are were always also turning point blocks for his team defensively.

I am shocked just how much he’s improved defensively (because he was lost even 3 years ago) now he seems rarely out of position and geared.

7/1/2010: D. Wade comes back home

by majoyenrac on May 6, 2010 7:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't be such haters

He’s fast, gets good steals, blocks a lot of shots and is a good rebounder. Not to mention very few people have the guts to take him on a one-on-one (Go Deng!). Right now he’s easily better than Artest and every aspect you can imagine.

by JustAnotherFan on May 6, 2010 8:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Just because he gets highlight blocks

doesn’t mean he is a great defender. He’s maybe good but not a great “on the ball defender” but I have to say he is improving

by T.Moore on May 6, 2010 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

why no votes for Deng?

I read somewhere on this blog that he was an excellent defender

by Rosenscrubs on May 5, 2010 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

Kobe is a great defender like 25% of the year. Rondo is overrated like Payton was…just gambles and gets a lot of steals. Not really locking anyone down…Payton was better defensively than Rondo due to his size.

by C Smoove on May 5, 2010 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

This article:“http://www.basketballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1071” gives a good, stat-based breakdown of the top defenders this year. Luol Deng gets an honorable mention. Rondo’s still 1st team, so apparently the numbers back up his reputation. However, I think that could be attributed to the talent around him, due to the flaws of defensive metrics.

Brad Miller is god.

by Poloplaya14 on May 6, 2010 12:22 AM CDT reply actions

so which PGs are good defenders then?

by TheMoon on May 6, 2010 12:31 AM CDT up reply actions

You know, I asked the same question to myself

My pure hatred for Rajon Rondo would not allow me to accept that Rondo is the best defensive PG in the NBA. I do actually believe that at least part of his good defense can be attributed to the talent around him. I think he’s good, but I just didn’t think that he’s the best. But looking at the other names on that list, none of those guys stand out to me as stellar defenders. I’ll take Kirk over Andre Miller any day (Portland almost did). The more I think about it, the more I sorta believe that in today’s NBA, PGs are so quick and athletic, that almost nobody can stay in front of them. If you have 2 guys who are the same speed playing one on one, the offensive player will win every time because there’s a mental lag between seeing your opponent move and reacting. Is there anybody who can keep guys like Westbrook and Rose in front of them on even a remotely consistent basis? Discrepancies in stats like dMult can be attributed to the big men behind them who cover their asses behind them. The fact that Rondo, Jennings, Miller, Westbrook, and Felton have good advanced defensive metrics say more about the skill of Garnett, Gerald Wallace, Bogut, Oden, Camby, and Nick Collison (don’t laugh, he’s good), IMO.

Brad Miller is god.

by Poloplaya14 on May 6, 2010 1:03 AM CDT up reply actions   2 recs

yeah, but rondo, jennings and westbrook all look like they are making an impact on defense,

to the extent that it is possible to do so as a PG. I dont think it would surprise anyone who watches them play to see these guys rated as good defenders.
